Tuesday, May 31, 2016 UPDATE:

Greetings:

A news director change in a top ten market tops today’s UPDATE.

The changes come at Meredith’s WGCL-TV in Atlanta, where LARRY PERRET and Executive Producer LEESA DILLON are leaving.

Volpicella

Volpicella

Former KVUE-TV (Austin, TX) News Director FRANK VOLPICELLA will join the station in mid July as news director. Frank spent the last 15 years as news director for KVUE before taking the Tegna buyout in April. He’s worked in Atlanta before, has been an ND in Huntsville and Lexington, and has worked in Tampa and Jacksonville, FL.

Here’s the note from General Manager MARK PIMENTEL (himself a former news director) announcing and explaining the changes.

UPDATED 5/31/16 @ 6:20 PM:  The local newspaper is now reporting the change with some background on the station’s ND history.

Perret

Perret

Larry’s been the ND for this CBS affiliate since the fall of 2014. He’s worked in a number of markets over the years, and also spent time with Magid as a consultant. His Linkedin page tells the full story.

One other note. Our initial report in our most recent newsletter on JENNIFER HARDY‘s move to WWSB-TV in Sarasota from WAAY-TV in Huntsville. contained inaccuracies as to the stations’ ownership. The stations are in the process of being sold by current owner Calkins Media to several buyers, one of which is Raycom.

We’ll have all the latest news in our full newsletter later this week.

Wood

KSL-TV, Salt Lake City, UT…this Bonneville owned NBC affiliate hired LEONA WOOD to fill its open news director position. Here’s the note from GM TANYA VEA to the staff. Leona last graced these pages in November when we reported her departure from KPHO/KTVK-TV in Phoenix after two years as ND, saying she wanted to spend more time with her family. She spent seven years as the Ass’t. ND at KPHO, was a news director in Spokane, and also worked in Seattle. Leona replaces CHRIS MOORE who left in January after less than two years as ND.

Kirkconnell

Kirkconnell

WLTZ-TV, Columbus, GA…GENE KIRKCONNELL starts June 1 as the next ND for this SagamoreHill (cq) owned NBC affiliate. This news release tells us that Gene and his wife have family in Columbus. He’s a former GM in Birmingham and Augusta, GA, and a former news director in Charleston, SC, Wichita, and Greenville, NC. He also worked as an EP in Birmingham. At WLTZ, he replaces ANDREA CLENNEY who is returning to Gainesville for a news director’s position there.

And our apologies to KEITH BLIVEN whose name we misspelled in reporting his hiring as ND for KTIV-TV in Sioux City, IA.

Greetings:

Welcome to your weekly free report on news director, news management, and general management moves around the TV business.

This week’s report finds TWO newspeople getting their first ND jobs, while ONE news director moves within her company to take an Assistant ND job. Those changes leave our count of open ND jobs at 27.

TWO of those jobs (both in top 30 markets) are featured among our THREE Paid Help Wanted ads.

Also this week, a handful of management moves, including one in Chicago. And we have news of some upper level management changes at Tegna, a former ND gets his second GM job, and a retirement after 26 years as GM for a Louisiana exec.

One more note: In our report last week on ANDREA CLENNEY‘s return to FLorida, we told you she was headed back to Tallahassee. That was wrong. She’s returning to Gainesville where she used to be ND for WCJB-TV and will now be ND at WGFL-TV. Apologies for the error.

Read on for all the latest!

May 8, 2016

Greetings:

An interesting week. There are THREE new news director openings…all created by NDs taking new jobs, TWO of those in smaller markets. And those THREE people are the only ones we know taking new ND jobs this week, thus leaving our count of open ND jobs at 29.

TWO of those 29 openings are among the FIVE Paid Help Wanted ads in this week’s edition, including a new ad for a Managing Editor’s job in Houston.

We have details about the retirement of a longtime news director turned station manager in Phoenix, a story about Hearst naming a fellowship after FRED YOUNG, and a new man at the top of AP’s ENPS.

All that and more below…

Baron Full-4-21-16

New News Director Openings:

KRIV-TV, Houston, TX…as we reported earlier this week, BOB MORFORD is leaving this FOX owned station to become ND at WAFF-TV in Huntsville, AL. There’s a good reason behind that, which we’ll explain below. Bob was ND here for about three years and was the Assistant ND for about a year before being bumped up.

WISH-TV, Indianapolis, IN…in another move we shared with you earlier this week, ELBERT TUCKER is leaving this CW affiliate after a year to return to his native Tennessee as ND for sister Media General-about-to-be Nexstar owned WKRN-TV in Nashville. We’ll explain more on his move below.

WLTZ-TV, Columbus, GA…ANDREA CLENNEY is leaving this SagamoreHill owned station to return to Gainesville. More on that below, too. She joined this NBC affiliate late in 2014.

Newly Named News Director:

Tucker

Tucker

WKRN-TV, Nashville, TN…as noted above, ELBERT TUCKER is moving back to Tennessee to become the ND for this ABC affiliate. (It’s currently owned by Media General but Nexstar is in the process of buying that company.) Elbert told me the move brings him closer to both his and his wife’s families. He’s been the ND for sister Media General station WISH-TV in Indianapolis for the past year, has been an ND in Columbus, OH, and Cincinnati, and has also worked in Birmingham and Chattanooga. At WKRN, he replaces MATTHEW ZELKIND who left the station in March after 17 years as ND in two different times.

Morford

Morford

WAFF-TV, Huntsville, AL…BOB MORFORD joins this Raycom Media owned NBC affiliate as ND. Bob told me he’s happy to join Raycom and to be a short drive from his wife MARGARET, who lives in Nashville. (Both Bob and Margaret are Nashville natives but have commuted for most of their marriage.) WAFF GM VANESSA OUBRE told the staff in this memo. He’s been ND for KRIV-TV in Houston for the past 3+ years, and has also been an ND in Phoenix, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati (two stations), Knoxville, and West Palm Beach, and also worked in Columbia, MO. He replaces ADAM HENNING who spent seven years here and is now ND at WPEC-TV in West Palm Beach.

Clenney

Clenney

WGFL-TV, Gainesville, FL…ANDREA CLENNEY returns to Gainesville as news director for this Sinclair operated CBS station. She had been ND at competitor WCJB-TV for three years before leaving in late 2014 to become the news director for WLTZ-TV in Columbus, GA. She’s a former ND in Greenville, NC, and Wilmington, NC, spent more than ten years as the Senior Morning Producer for KMGH-TV in Denver, and has also worked in Orlando, Tampa, Austin, Syracuse, and Augusta, GA.

Hearst has named a journalism fellowship after its former VP/News, FRED YOUNG. Fred spent (I believe) his entire career at Hearst, starting at WTAE-TV in Pittsburgh as a go-fer, rising to news director and then general manager before moving to the corporate staff. One of the truly good guys in our business, he retired in 2008 but has kept busy as you’ll learn in this article.
