California’s KSBY, Thinks BIG on its Latest Set Design Project

Tuesday January 9, 2018

The team at KSBY, Cordillera Communications, NBC affiliate, covering California’s Santa Barbara, Santa Maria, and San Luis Obispo market, and the team at Santa Barbara based, Devlin Design Group, collaborated on a project for a station with limited space, with lofty aspirations. ‘Big thinking’ is what makes this project exceptional.

The result, a modular, technologically advanced, scenic storytelling environment created by maximizing the space and scale of the design elements. The new set showcases the KSBY talent, and the content is energized with visually enhanced flexibility.

The new set gives us tremendous flexibility, allowing us to advance our story telling capabilities while delivering a big market presentation. It is more than we could have imagined!—Kathleen Choal, President & General Manager

There is no correlation between shrinking of space and diminishing of the cool factor. This set is big on style. A 6×1 monitor array anchors the design and features everything from the big story to weather. An 80” monitor kiosk is used for interactive storytelling. Social media coverage comes alive in the ‘tech center’ with 2 large displays along with 3 smaller monitors. The front of the anchor desk includes a monitor to showcase station branding.

The textures on the set reflect the beauty of the California coast. Stacked stones and a soft wave pattern appear throughout the design. RGB LED color changing walls add visual interest and flexibility to the set.

“Small spaces can be challenging. Team DDG has the creativity, knowledge and innovative big thinking to maximize smaller scale scenic environments, without sacrificing functionality.” —Dan Devlin, Owner, Chief Creative Strategist, Devlin Design Group
