America's classrooms are facing a critical teacher shortage. In Massachusetts, the shortage is especially acute, with 57% of schools reporting unfilled teaching vacancies, 10% higher than the national average. Something must be done to recruit talented, highly trained individuals to help grow the teaching profession. Educators Rising is a program dedicated to growing young future educators starting as early as middle school. Through our Grow Your Own educator pathway, we can prepare students for their new careers earlier and keep them local once they enter the workforce, since 60% of all teachers teach within 20 miles of where they went to school. We work with schools to establish chapters and curriculum, giving students early exposure to a host of education career options. In turn, districts hire their students back after they’ve earned their teaching credentials. You can be a part of making this happen for young people in Massachusetts. I have been wanting to share this for quite some time, with my followers here on LinkedIn. As I've gotten older and debatably, wiser:), I look more & more for meaningful ways to give back to my community. Partnering with business & social relationships, to do good...I shared an idea over breakfast late last year, with my good friend, Eric Perry. We both had experiences attending various $100 Dinners, whereby, a bunch of local business owners would gather at a specific restaurant, in hopes of getting the most attendees possible, charging them $100 each, and bestow the mighty proceeds with 2 or 3 deserving servers. Yes, it does feel great to reward hard working and perhaps, financially struggling service staff with a potentially life changing gratuity. I just felt, we could do something better. Something more impactful to the community, in addition to the service staff. I said Eric, what do you think about partnering up, starting January 2024, and host a $100 Dinner, whereby, we focus on the following: 1. Find a local family owned restaurant 2. choose a day of the week where business might be slower than the weekends 3. Ask them to staff us with their most deserving wait staff (Ones on hard times, maybe a single parent struggling to make ends meet and just needs a big time lift) 4. My favorite aspect (and where we are different), each month we select a different 501C3 Charity to raise and award the proceeds to. Each month we have grown organically, and the enthusiasm is contageous. Here's a pic from last night's Charity Dinner (in the comments) where we raised $3,600.00, awarding $1,800 to the 2 servers who took care of us, and $1,800.00 to this month's charity...The Million Dollar Teacher Project https://mdtproject.org/. Highland Park Community Foundation - Grant Recipient Profile (new series!) Operation Warm provides warmth, confidence, and hope through basic needs programs that connect under-resourced children to community resources they need to thrive. In partnership with the Rotary Club of Winnetka-Northfield, we will provide new winter coats and new athletic shoes to over 200 economically disadvantaged students attending North Shore School District 112 schools. "Operation Warm is delighted to partner with the Rotary Club of Winnetka-Northfield to bring warmth, confidence, and hope to economically disadvantaged students in the Highland Park-Highwood community. These gifts provide more than just clothing. "There is an extinction of experience taking place, with adults and youth spending less time in nature, but we are reversing this trend," writes VP of Engagement & Education Keith Williams. "To that end, Lancaster Conservancy ran 177 interpretive events that reached 5,700 people [in 2024], and 25 of those were school programs that brought 1,400 students into nature. The students we served [last] year came from a variety of districts including School District of Lancaster, Penn Manor, Conestoga Valley, Donegal, and York City." Lancaster Conservancy’s K-12 school program is where we focus on teaching skills and sharing knowledge to prepare the future stewards of the lands and waters we protect today. I am amazed at what a single movement can do for non profits, particularly our school. Today is Giving Tuesday and like many organizations, we secured a matching fund of $40,000 to inspire our alumni, current families and alumni parents to give today, and double their dollars. But it's become my favorite day on the giving calendar because of conversations like the one I had with Jack Dowd. Jack graduated from St. Charles in 1949, which makes him 93 years young! He wanted to give his donation over the phone...and also share that Ocala, FL is a great place to live. (*noted!) He said he was happy, healthy and has learned that a long life is about "movement." He has no email address and still uses a flip phone, walks his dog every day and sometimes rides his bike. His biggest tip: don't ever give up driving your car, it limits your freedom! He was sharp as a tack, delightful and witty. These conversations are gifts to those of us on our development team. They remind us of the very personal experience that our alums have with St. Charles, show us the importance of giving back, and are proof that we do, in fact, Build Better Men. What does a campaign like Giving Tuesday mean for St. Charles? It means we can continue developing young men in an all-boys environment, centered around faith and rigorous academics, with the goal of every young man achieving his God-given potential. It means we can accommodate our growing enrollment and the need for additional faculty, staff and classrooms. It means we can invest in emergency equipment for new buildings, refurbishment needs of our historical spaces, weekend junior and senior religious retreats, unique speakers and programs, faculty and staff professional development and more. This is exactly the dialogue necessary to move education forward. Right now, ‘public education’ is a term in dire need of redefinition.
