Local and state leaders proclaim December 15th as John Johnson Day.

The mayor of Meridian gave Johnson the key to the city. A city full of people that welcomed Johnson into their homes every night.

“John Johnson this is your key forever to this city right here, the city of Meridian. Thank you, Mr. Johnson,” Mayor Percy Bland says.

Everyone celebrated the career of John Johnson. Familiar faces on and off air, along with many local leaders, friends and family, Johnson was shown nothing but love as he retires as news director.

“He is probably one of the kindest individuals you will ever meet. He has a gentle spirit and one of the most positive influences on this area. The entire area, not just Meridian,”

Some had tears of joy for the person that inspired them for many years.

“I’m proud to stand here and say, there would not be a Joe Norwood if it wasn’t for a John Johnson. I love you, brother,” former WTOK photographer and current Lauderdale County Supervisor Joe Norwood tells Johnson.

“I like to joke about John having the foresight, or lack thereof, to hire me 30 years ago. We have a beautiful Ping putter that says, ‘to John Johnson, 32 years of service WTOK. WTOK Sports Director Lindsey Hall tells Johnson.

“We have enjoyed our time working together. There have been many people that have come through here and have influenced our lives, but none as much as John Johnson. WTOK General Manager Tim Walker explains.

“I’m overwhelmed by the way people in this community turned out to talk about some very good years at WTOK,” Johnson says.

As a coworker, friend or boss, Johnson has always given thoughtful advice to those around him. He says he was taught that if someone has an impact on your life, then you owe it to the next person to have an impact on their life. He says that’s something he has always lived by.
