Amy Alvarez Named News Director For KULX Salt Lake City

The award-winning local news veteran joins the Telemundo station from the group’s KVDA San Antonio where she was executive producer.

KULX Salt Lake City (Telemundo Utah), part of NBCUniversal Local’s Telemundo Station Group, today appointed Amy Alvarez news director beginning May 6. The award-winning local news veteran, who has been executive producer for Telemundo’s KVDA San Antonio since 2019. She  will report to Tatiana Argüello, KULX President-GM.

In her new role, Alvarez will oversee all aspects of news editorial, production and operations for Telemundo Utah. She will lead the station’s team of cross-platform news producers, reporters and anchors to deliver the most comprehensive and impactful local news, weather, investigative journalism, consumer reporting, original content and special events to Spanish-speaking communities across Telemundo Utah’s television, digital media and streaming platforms.

Argüello said: “Amy is a dedicated and passionate news professional who has significant experience producing and leading local coverage for Spanish-language newsrooms in large Hispanic media markets, including roles with several Telemundo-owned stations. We are excited she’s joining our talented and hard-working news team to help us further our already impactful position in our communities and super-serve Spanish-speaking audiences across Utah.”

Overall, Alvarez has more than 20 years of experience in news production and leadership, including more than 18 years in newsroom positions with three Telemundo-owned stations in Texas. For more than four years as Telemundo 60 San Antonio’s executive producer, she has led the station’s news operations and managed special events and breaking news coverage. Alvarez joined KVDA as a news producer in 2018 before being promoted the following year.

Prior to San Antonio, Alvarez spent two years as executive news producer for Tegna, based in Houston, after serving as a news producer for Telemundo’s KTMD Houston for nearly four years.  Previously, she held several roles with Telemundo Dallas and Telemundo Station Group. Alvarez also was a news producer for the Telemundo Production Center, based in Dallas. She also gained experience as an associate producer for Televen, a national television network in Venezuela.

Alvarez was raised in Caracas, Venezuela, and graduated from the University of Santa Maria, where she earned a degree in communication and journalism. She has been recognized with multiple Lone Star Emmy nominations and awards during her tenure with Telemundo Houston. She was a part of KVDA’s Emmy wins for breaking news and morning/daytime newscast.
