San Angelo police award TV news director merit award

Staff report
Local news director David Wagner is presented with a merit award by San Angelo Police Chief Frank Carter.

David Wagner, KLST and KSAN news director, was given a Merit Award by the San Angelo Police Department during a surprise ceremony Thursday.

Police Chief Frank Carter presented the award to Wagner for his "quick action" in notifying the police about a threat made toward first responders.

On Jan. 13, Wagner answered a call from Gary Ray Wright, who told Wagner he was going to initiate a police standoff.  After speaking with Wright, Wagner called the police to warn them about Wright’s threat, according to an SAPD news release.

Police cordoned off an area of the city's North Side after gunfire erupted from this burning house in January.

Following the conversation with Wagner, Wright and his wife Brenda Joyce Wright set their house on fire in a premeditated plot to ambush and kill responding San Angelo police, the release stated.

"The department is grateful for Wagner’s quick action, which played an instrumental role in thwarting this attack on local first responders," the release states.
