June 30, 2008

Greetings:

Three ND moves to tell you about this week, with TWO stations getting new news directors and just ONE new opening.

These changes mean 25 stations remain with an opening for a news director.

This week’s edition contains news of a former ND-turned-GM resigning his GM gig in a top 20 market. And we have obituaries for three people, including a former Arkansas and Ohio ND who also taught for many years.

Finally, we’re re-running paid ads for EP openings in Phoenix and Nashville.

All that, and more, after this week’s changes.

NEW NEWS DIRECTOR OPENINGS:

WIS-TV, Columbia, SC…TINA LUQUE BLACKLOCKE is leaving this Raycom-owned powerhouse NBC affiliate to become ND at WTKR-TV in Norfolk, VA. (More on that below.) Tina’s been the ND here since April, 2003. She’s also worked in Philadelphia and Boston.

NEW NEWS DIRECTORS NAMED:

WTKR-TV, Norfolk, Va…as noted above, TINA LUQUE BLACKLOCKE will be the next ND for this LocalTV owned CBS affiliate. The move here reunites Tina with WKTR GM JEFF HOFFMAN. They worked together in Philadelphia and at WIS-TV where Tina became ND when Jeff gave up those responsibilities to concentrate on his Station Manager duties. At WTKR, Tina replaces SHANE MORELAND who left the station last week after ten months as news director. Tina is the fifth ND here in the last four years.

WNWO-TV, Toledo, OH…TIM LIVINGSTON has been promoted to ND for this Barrington owned NBC affiliate. He first joined the station eleven years ago as a producer and has worked his way up. He replaces PAT LIVINGSTON (no relation) who has been named Director of News for owner Barrington Broadcasting. Pat was the ND here for the last year, and has also been an ND in Youngstown, OH, and Peoria, IL.

Note: Last week we reported an ND opening at Tribune’s KHCW-TV in Houston. The station will change its call letters next month to KIAH-TV. It’s the third set of calls for this station in the last nine years.

Greetings:

This week’s newsletter contains details on news director changes in three markets, all involving veteran news directors.

We have TWO new ND openings with ONE position being filled.

My figures now show 24 stations with an opening for a news director.

There are few updates in our list of news manager openings this week. We also have two paid ads: one for a Florida News Director’s job, the other for an Assistant ND job in the Northeast. And we have the sad duty to tell you about the death of a CNN EP who had worked in local markets from Florida to California to Missouri.

All that, and more, after this week’s changes.

NEW NEWS DIRECTOR OPENINGS:

WINK-TV, Ft. Myers, FL…BRUCE KIRK has left the Ft. Myers Broadcasting owned CBS affiliate after about a year as ND. He’s also been a news director in Yuma, AZ, and Roanoke. JOHN EMMERT, who became the station’s Director of Technology when Bruce joined the station, will be the interim ND but the station is conducting a search for a new news director. You can read more about this opportunity in the paid ad below.

KTUU-TV, Anchorage, AL…longtime news director and anchor JOHN TRACY is leaving the news business to be a partner in an Anchorage public relations firm. John’s worked at the station for almost 20 years and has been the ND for the last 18 years.

NEW NEWS DIRECTORS NAMED:

Steve most recently worked for Clear Channel, and the move here reunites him with DON PERRY, the GM for KPSP who also worked for Clear Channel. OBITUARY

BOB COLEMAN died yesterday (Thursday, June 12). Bob had been an EP at CNN since 1999, and had worked as a producer and EP in a number of markets, including San Francisco, Miami, Tampa, St. Louis, Jacksonville, and Gainesville, FL, where I believe he was once ND at WCJB-TV. Bob was diagnosed recently with an infection, perhaps related to a kidney transplant he’d received a few years ago. He was smart, funny, and a good newsman. My best guess is that he was in his mid 50’s. He leaves behind a wife and young daughter. A funeral service for Bob is scheduled for Monday, June 16th, in St. Louis. More details in this obituary from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

June 9, 2008

Greetings:

Lots of activity to tell you about, with SIX new NDs named since our last report. And I show just ONE new opening.

You’ll see names of many veteran news directors in this week’s report, some because they’ve taken a new ND job, and some because they’re advancing in station or network management positions. And we’ll tell you about one long-time Tennessee news director who’s retiring at the end of the month.

My figures now show 23 stations with an opening for a news director.

As mentioned above, we have some interesting names in our Names in the News segment. And we’re re-running two ads this week, one for the ND job at a VERY strong Illinois station, and the other is a blind box ad for the news director’s job at another Midwest station.

All that, and more, after this week’s changes.

NEW NEWS DIRECTOR OPENINGS:

WSTM-TV, Syracuse, NY…PEGGY PHILLIP is leaving this Barrington owned NBC affiliate to become ND for Baltimore’s WMAR-TV. More on that move below. Peggy’s previously been a news director in Memphis and Tulsa, and has also worked in Chicago, Boston and Miami.

NEW NEWS DIRECTORS NAMED:

WMAR-TV, Baltimore, MD…as noted above, PEGGY PHILLIP will be the next ND for his Scripps owned ABC affiliate. Peggy’s been the ND for WSTM-TV in Syracuse for the last year or so. At WMAR-TV, she replaces DAVID SILVERTSTEIN who left the station in March after about 18 months as ND. She becomes the fifth ND here in the last 5+ years.

WTVF-TV, Nashville, TN…SANDY BOONSTRA is being promoted to ND for this Landmark-owned (at least for now) CBS affiliate. She’s currently the Assistant ND there and has worked at the station for 18 years. She replaces MIKE CUTLER who announced his retirement Thursday, effective at the end of the month. Mike’s been the ND here for ten years, and was also an ND at KVBC-TV in Las Vegas. He’s also worked in Columbus, OH, Cincinnati, and at CNN. Join me in wishing Mike well in his well-deserved retirement after 34 years in TV news.

KTVX-TV, Salt Lake City, UT…TOM BELL fills one of the longest running open positions on our list as he returns to the ND chair at this Newport TV owned-ABC affiliate. Tom most recently was ND at KPHO-TV, and previously worked as ND at WKBD-TV in Detroit. He also worked (twice) as an Assistant ND at KMOV-TV in St Louis. At KTVX, he replaces JON FISCHER who left the station in June, 2007.

KAIT-TV, Jonesboro, AR…HATTON WEEKS has been promoted to ND for this Raycom owned ABC affiliate. He has been the Assistant ND here, and replaces RANDY PARROT who left the station in March.

KTVM-TV, Bozeman, MT…we’re apparently a little late in reporting to you that ANDY KEMP is the new ND for this NBC affiliate.

KTVH-TV, Helena, MT…CURTIS GREVENITZ has bee named ND for this NBC affiliate. He replaces SEAN HARKNESS who left the station in February.

Finally, apologies to MANNY FANTIS whose name I misspelled last week in reporting his appointment as ND for KTVL-TV in Medford, OR.
