I hope you had a chance to enjoy some part of this holiday week.

Welcome to a slightly-delayed-by-the-holidays edition of your free weekly newsletter covering the comings and goings of news managers.

And as you might expect from a holiday week, not a lot to report.

There are TWO new news directors to tell you about, and, to the best of my knowledge, there are NO new openings this week.

That leaves my count of open ND positions at 24.

We do have an ad for several positions at a CBS affiliate in a top ten market.

That’s below, after this week’s changes.

KTKA-TV, Topeka, KS…DENISE ECK has been promoted to ND for this ABC affiliate. She has been the Assistant ND here, and moves up with the departure of IKE WALKER. We told you last edition that Ike was moving to WCMH-TV in Columbus, OH, as Content Brand Manager. He’d been ND for two years.

WCAV/WVAW, Charlotttesville, VA…JIM HANCHETT will be the next ND for this Gray Television owned CBS/ABC duopoly. He’s currently anchor and Managing Editor for WECT-TV in Wilmington, NC. He’ll replace JEREMY SETTLE who returned to Washington, DC, as ND for Albritton’s NewsChannel 8 cable channel.

Greetings:

A new ND for WBBM-TV in Chicago highlights this week’s changes among NDs and other news managers.

That’s one of THREE new NDs we’ll tell you about in this edition, and there are THREE new openings, as well.

By my count, there are still 26 stations with openings for a news director.

Also this week, a few additions to the list of open news management jobs. We’ll also tell you the name of the next Paul White Award winner from RTNDA, share news of several management moves, and we’ll also share the good news of the retirement of a 41 year news vet…this one a former ND in California, Texas, and Indiana. And we’ll also tell you about the wedding of a current news director.

That and more after this week’s changes:

NEW NEWS DIRECTOR OPENINGS:

WBZ-TV, Boston, MA…JEFF KIERNAN is leaving this CBS o-and- to move to another CBS owned station, WBBM-TV in Chicago. He’s been ND here for just over a year. More on Jeff and his new job below.

WMGT-TV, Macon, GA…MIKE ROBERTS has left this NBC station after more than two years as ND. WMGT is owned by Morris Network.

KTKA-TV, Topeka, KS…IKE WALKER is leaving this ABC affiliate to become content brand manager for WCMH-TV in Columbus, OH. Ike’s been the ND there for the past two years, and has previously worked in Tulsa and Savannah.

NEW NEWS DIRECTORS NAMED:

WBBM-TV, Chicago, IL…as noted above, JEFF KIERNAN will be the next news director for this CBS o-and-o. It’s a return to the area for Jeff, who grew up in nearby Munster, IN, part of the Chicago market. Jeff’s been the ND for CBS’s WBZ-TV in Boston and WCCO-TV in Minneapolis, as well as WTMJ-TV in Milwaukee. At WBBM, he replaces CAROL FOWLER who left the station last month after six years as ND.

WPMT-TV, York, PA…CHRIS HOLDEN will be the next ND for this Tribune-owned FOX affiliate. He was most recently was a sports producer for KPNX-TV in Phoenix. He’s also worked in Salt Lake City and as a morning producer for KTVK-TV in Phoenix. At WPMT, he replaces JIM DePURY who left the station earlier this month after 14 years as ND.

KHNL/KFVE-TV, Honolulu, HI…longtime KHNL employee DAN SCHMIDT will oversee news for this Raycom-owned station, in a department the station is calling “Content”. It’s a combination of the newsroom, programming, and creative services. The previous ND, DAN DENNISON, will lose his job in this consolidation. Dan’s been the ND here since April, 2006.

Also, two errors on my part last week. I mistakenly told you that WYFF was the call letters of the FOX station in Burlington, VT, which has an ND opening. It’s actually WFFF. Thanks to those of you who called that to my attention.

In Names of the News, in giving you an update on former WTHR-TV ND BOB CAMPBELL’s career in real estate, I identified his wife as Maureen. It is Marlene. Apologies.

NAMES in the NEWS:

A sincere congratulations to Hearst Argyle’s FRED YOUNG, who was named the winner of the Paul White Award by RTNDA this week. Many of you know Fred, the Senior VP/News for Hearst who will retire at year’s end. He’s been with the company since 1962, as a news director, and later GM in Pittsburgh, and most recently on the corporate staff. Fred’s one of the great people in our business, and I hope you’ll join me in wishing him well at: fyoung@hearst.com

STEPHANIE LINTON is the new Nightside EP for WFOR-TV in Miami. She didn’t have to move…she’d been the morning EP for this CBS o-and-o. The search is now on for her replacement.

Also not having to move too far for his next job is MARK FRIEDMAN, who’s now a Senior Producer for CNBC’s “Mad Money with Jim Cramer”. Mark most recently was an EP with News 12 Long Island, and has also worked in Detroit, Tampa, and Salt Lake City.

Finally, congratulations on a well-deserved retirement to TOM MOO, who wraps up a 41 year career in our business today. Tom most recently been the Assistant ND and Operations Manager for WREG-TV in Memphis. He’s a former ND in markets ranging from San Diego and San Jose to Evansville and Tyler, TX. Greetings:

Despite the horrific layoff news that you’ve all read about this week in the trades, a number of people found new jobs this week as news directors.

In fact, FIVE new NDs were named this week, THREE of them in top 25 markets in Florida. And there are TWO new ND openings to share with you

By my count, there are still 25 stations with openings for a news director.

We’re re-running the ad for the VP of Content job for a duopoly in Denver. It’s essentially a new name for the news director’s job.

We also have a few new news management changes. In Names in the News, a former Denver ND lands on his feet and right down the street. And we have a profile of a former Indianapolis ND who’s found a new career after TV news. Sadly, we have two obituaries, but we do have more pleasant news..the wedding of a Texas ND.

NEW NEWS DIRECTOR OPENINGS:

WTAE-TV, Pittsburgh, PA…we reported in an emailed UPDATE earlier this week that BOB LONGO was being promoted within Hearst to become ND for sister station WESH-TV in Orlando. Bob’s been the ND for this ABC affiliate since 1999. More on his move to Orlando below.

WYFF-TV, Burlington, VT…KATHLEEN HARRINGTON is leaving this FOX affiliate as of today. She’s the first ND in the station’s history, having started here in April, 2007

NEW NEWS DIRECTORS NAMED:

WFTS-TV, Tampa, FL…in another move we told you about via a mid-week emailed UPDATE, DOUG CULVER will be the new ND for this Scripps owned ABC affiliate. Doug most recently worked on election coverage for WJLA-TV in Washington. He’s a former Assistant ND/Managing Editor in Seattle, and an EP in Los Angeles. Doug replaces CHRIS JADICK who left the station to take a job with a local company.

WSFL-TV, Ft. Lauderdale, FL…JOSE SUAREZ has been named Director of Local Programming for this Tribune owned independent which is starting a new morning program. Jose most recently has been with WTVJ/WSCV in Miami. And he’s a former ND at WUPW-TV in Toledo. At WSFL, he replaces SUE KAVALERSKI.

WESH-TV, Orlando, FL…as noted above, BOB LONGO will be the next ND for this Hearst owned NBC affiliate. Bob’s been the ND for sister Hearst station WTAE-TV in Pittsburgh since 1999, and previously was an ND in Buffalo. He replaces BARB MAUSHARD who’s moving to New York as VP/News for Hearst-Argyle.

WNEG-TV, Toccoa, Ga…JEFF DANTRE, a former reporter and editor for WSB Radio in Atlanta, will be the next ND for this University of Georgia owned commercial independent station.

WSTM-TV, Syracuse, NY…RAE FULKERSON has been promoted to ND for this Barrington owned NBC affiliate. She had been the Assistant ND, and replaces PEGGY PHILIP who left in June after 14 months as ND to become ND for WMAR-TV in Baltimore.

OBITUARIES:

One time KPAX-TV (Missoula, MT) ND and anchor BILL DAVEY died this week at the age of 54. He had been battling cancer. Bill moved to Florida a few years ago. Earlier in his career he worked in Minot, ND.

Retired Indiana newsman HARRY FREY died earlier this month at the age of 94. He worked WTHI-TV in Terre Haute for 20 years, and spent some of that time as the ND there. He retired from the station in 1982 and later worked for the city of Terre Haute. He was inducted into the Indiana Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2006.

NAMES in the NEWS:

One time KWGN-TV (Denver) ND CARL BILEK moves across town to become EP of News Gathering for KMGH-TV. Carl’s position at KWGN was eliminated earlier this year when that Tribune newsroom was merged with LocalTV’s KDVR-TV. At KMGH, he’ll oversee news gathering and news content on a daily basis.

KATHY CLARK returns to TV news and to KPHO-TV as Executive Producer. She had earlier worked at that CBS affiliate, and in Tucson, as well. Most recently she’s been working outside of TV news on a program called Arizona Highways.

Proving there is life after TV news is former Indianapolis/WTHR-TV news director BOB CAMPBELL, who continues his real estate career in Washington State. Bob…who works with his wife Maureen…was recently interviewed about his recent move to RE/Max. Click here to read the article. Greetings:

It’s a relatively slow week in the wild and wacky world of news director changes, with TWO new news director openings, while TWO jobs were filled during the last week.

By my count, there are still 27 stations with openings for a news director.

We have a new ad this week for a VP of Content for a duopoly in Denver. It has a fancy name, but I believe it’s essentially what you might call the news director’s job. And we have a few names in the news, including a Happy Anniversary for a South Dakota veteran.

That and more after this week’s changes:

NEW NEWS DIRECTOR OPENINGS:

WKBW-TV, Buffalo, NY…GLEN HORN is resigning as ND of this Granite-owned ABC station early next year. Glen’s been the ND here since March, 2007, and tells me he has a few irons in the fire.

WPMT-TV, York (Harrisburg) PA…After 14 years, JIM DePURY has left this Tribune owned Fox station. I think Jim may be the only ND in this station’s history. He previously worked in St. Louis.

NEW NEWS DIRECTORS NAMED:

KBAK/KBFX, Bakersfield, CA…DOUG BARDEN has been hired as ND for this Fisher Broadcasting owned CBS/FOX duopoly. He has been the Assistant ND at KSTU-TV in Salt Lake City, and previously had been an ND in Cheyenne. Doug has also worked in Reno. He replaces MEAGHAN ST. PIERRE who left the station in September after 3+ years as ND. Meaghan’s husband took a job in Michigan.

KKC0-TV, Grand Junction, CO…AMANDA WAGNER has been promoted to ND for this NBC affiliate. She has been anchoring the noon news in this, her second stint at the station. She worked in Madison, WI, in between. She replaces DAVE BEECH who became ND for KOLO-TV in Reno, NV.

And congratulations to JACK CAUDILL, news director and anchor at KEVN-TV in Rapid City, SD, on his 25th anniversary with the station. He started there as the weekend sports anchor, then sports director, primary anchor, and, since 2001, anchor and news director.
