Greetings:

Welcome to the last full newsletter of 2009. Here’s hoping that we all have a better 2010.

For a holiday week, we do have a bit of news to share.

There’s ONE new news director to report, filling an opening created when the current ND got a bump up to Station Manager. For the second consecutive week, NO new news director openings to report. Our count of open ND jobs remains at 25.

We have one item in Names in the News, and, sadly, two obituaries: one for a veteran newscast director who worked in a number of markets, and the other for a long running publication aimed at news directors.

NEW NEWS DIRECTORS NAMED:

KVOA-TV, Tucson, AZ…CATHIE BATBIE has been named Content Management Center Director for this Cordillera TV owned NBC affiliate. (You and I would probably call that news director.) Cathie’s worked at KVOA for ten years, and has most recently been Assistant News Director. She’ll replace veteran ND KATHLEEN CHOAL, who has been promoted to Station Manager after four years as ND. Kathleen (aka KATHLEEN SULLIVAN) has also been an ND in Las Vegas, an Assistant ND in Minneapolis and Atlanta, and an EP in Houston and Denver. She also spent more than a year has a police officer in Surprise, AZ. Congratulations to Kathleen and Cathie on their promotions.

The Assignment Editor is responsible for planning, preparing, setting-up and executing The Weather Channel’s content and coverage across all platforms including network, the website and mobile. This includes coverage of both scheduled newsworthy weather-related events as well as spot weather news and breaking stories. This role will act as a liaison between The Weather Channel and all NBC news divisions.

OBITUARIES:

Harris

I’m sorry to share the news that ANTHONY HARRIS, a veteran newscast director, died this week at the age of 42 from an apparent heart attack. Anthony was currently working his second stint at KPRC-TV in Houston, which aired this tribute on its 6:00 newscast. A memo from GM LARRY BLACKERBY to the staff described a man with a ‘larger than life personality’. He was well travelled in two different ways: he loved to travel around the world and was planning a trip to Japan. And…in ways many broadcasters will identify with…he was well travelled in the business, with career stops in Lake Charles, LA, two stations in Tulsa, as well as Oklahoma City, Phoenix, Washington, DC, and Cleveland.

And I’m sorry to report the demise of The Rundown, which has been published for 29 years by Kim and Dick Standish. For 50 issues every year, The Rundown covered our business from a manager’s perspective: how stations in the same market covered a huge story, or what special ratings period series worked, or how investigative reports came together. A note to subscribers in the latest issue told the all-too-familiar story that has faced other publications. The Rundown will end after its traditional year end report on how major consulting firms view the year ahead. I’ve read it for many years, found valuable information in it when I was a news director, and continued to enjoy it during my career as an agent. Greetings:

Welcome to a very long pre-holiday issue of your weekly newsletter covering news director and news management changes. I hope the holiday season and 2010 are great for you and yours. I do intend to produce a newsletter next week, though it may be delayed by holiday travel.

It’s a fairly busy week for mid-December. There are THREE new news directors to introduce you to, and, to my knowledge, NO new openings. Two of those new NDs began at their stations at photographers and worked their way up to ND.

By my count there are now 25 stations with news director openings.

If you need proof that people are beginning to hire again, take note of the FIVE help wanted ads in this week’s issue. THREE of those ads are new and are for, I think, pretty attractive opportunities, including two large market management positions and a new ad for an assignment editor opening at the Weather Channel. Those ads join our two ads re-running from last week…including a management opening in Houston and at the Weather Channel. Those ads are just below.

WHEC-TV, Rochester, NY…longtime station employee STEVE RICHARDS ascends to the news director spot for this Hubbard Broadcasting owned NBC affiliate. Steve first joined the station as a vacation relief photographer in 1986. He’s currently the Assistant News Director, a job he’s held since 2005, and was Managing Editor before that. A note of congratulations would reach Steve at: srichards@whec.com. He replaces MIKE GOLDRICK who left the station earlier this month to become ND at WPXI-TV in Pittsburgh after three years as ND.

KSPR-TV, Springfield, MO…BRIDGET LOVELLE has been named ND for this ABC affiliate. She is currently the Assistant ND for WPTY/WLMT-TV in Memphis. She’s also worked in Norfolk, Va, and Wichita, KS. She replaces BRAD BELOTE who was named Director of Digital Content for KYTV in Springfield. KSPR is operated by Schurz Broadcasting which owns KYTV. Brad was ND there for three years.

WQAD-TV, Moline, IL…who says you can’t go home again? ALAN BAKER, who grew up 20 miles from this station, has been promoted to ND for this LocalTV owned ABC affiliate. Alan’s another former photographer who’s moved his way up the management ranks, working in Ft. Myers, FL, Columbus, OH, Nashville, and San Jose/San Francisco. He returned home in 2002, beginning at WQAD as a photographer before moving to the assignment desk, then Assistant ND. He becomes the sixth ND in seven years here and replaces BILL CAREY, who left the station last month to return to New York as ND for WPIX-TV after just over a year as ND at WQAD. KHOU, A Belo owned CBS affiliate in Houston, has an immediate opening for an Assistant News Director. We’re searching for a dynamic newsroom leader to oversee day to day operation of our enterprise driven news organization in market #10. Candidates should have previous news director or assistant news director experience in a medium to large market. The assistant news director must be able to devise and execute a winning strategy built around strong reporting and storytelling. We’re looking for someone who can teach and coach outstanding journalism in a newsroom that has won more awards for journalistic excellence than any other station in Texas. College degree is preferred.

RESPONSIBILITIES

·         Supervises specific KHOU News employees at the direction of the Executive News Director.
·         Assists the Executive News Director in recruiting, interviewing, and evaluating potential new employees.
·         Assists the News Director in identifying promising on-air talent for anchor and reporting jobs.
·         Assists the Executive News Director and the Business Manager in tracking News Department expenses and in the preparation of the News Department budget.
·         Works closely with KHOU’s consultants on research projects relating to the News Department.
·         Coordinates, with news managers at other Belo television stations, joint news coverage projects.
·         Works on other special projects and special assignments as directed by the Executive News Director.
·         Oversee special projects reporting and projects as directed by Executive News Director.
·         Oversee news department integration across all digital platforms.
·         Work closely with other departments inside the station to achieve news department goals.
·         Represent the News Department to outside groups.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS

·         Minimum 10 years experience in television news, including at least five years experience in a major market
·         A college degree preferred
·         Ability to interact productively and positively with fellow employees
·         Excellent verbal, written and organizational skills
·         Must possess strong leadership skills
·         Must have analytical budgetary abilities
·         Must be able to meet deadlines and prioritize.
·         Must be able to make good, sound, non judgmental decisions with on-air programming

Veteran broadcaster TERRY O’REILLY has been named Chief Content Officer for Twin Cities Public Television in Minneapolis-St. Paul. Terry tells me it’s a new position, responsible for strategic planning, production, acquisition & distribution of all of content across TPT’s linear broadcast channels, as well as its new media platforms. Terry’s background ranges from local news, to ND for the long-departed Group W newsfeed, and senior management positions at WTN, The Weather Channel, and, most recently, executive VP and GM for the Reelz Channel. PAIGE HARRISON is on the move again. She’s been named Assistant ND for Hearst’s WTAE-TV in Pittsburgh. That’s a promotion for her from her current job as Ass’t. She previously had been the Dayside EP for another Hearst station, WESH-TV in Orlando, and has also worked at CityTV in her native Toronto.

NEW NEWS DIRECTOR OPENINGS:

KCTV, Kansas City, KS…TRACY BROGDEN-MILLER has left this Meredith owned CBS affiliate after about 2 1/2 years as news director. She’s also been an ND at KTVB-TV in Boise, ID, and at Belo’s NORTHWEST CABLE NEWS in Seattle. She’s also been an Assistant ND at KTVK-TV in Phoenix.

WVVA-TV, Bluefield, WV…GREG CARTER is stepping down as news director, but will continue to anchor AND has added duties of content manager for this Quincy Newspapers owned NBC affiliate. Greg’s been the ND here since February, 2004.

KGNS-TV, Laredo, TX…this SagamoreHill Broadcasting NBC affiliate has begun its search for a new ND to replace the late RAY GOMEZ. Ray, as you know, died last month at the age of 45.

NEW NEWS DIRECTOR NAMED:

WWMT-TV, Kalamazoo/Grand Rapids, MI…STEVE KOLES has been named ND for this Freedom Broadcasting owned CBS affiliate. Steve is currently the Assistant ND for WPRI-TV in Providence, RI. He’s also worked in Tulsa, Baltimore, and Norfolk. At WWMT, he replaces CATHY YOUNKIN who was promoted to ND for Freedom’s WPEC-TV in West Palm Beach, FL, after more than two years as ND.

WBRE-TV, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, PA…JEREMY SETTLE will be the next ND for this NBC affiliate. Jeremy most recently was the ND for Albritton’s NEWSCHANNEL 8 in Washington, DC, and previously had been an ND for WCAV/WVAW-TV in Charlottesville, VA. At WBRE, he replaces RON KRISULEVICZ who left the station in August after three years.

ANDREW GILLFILLAN moves south to become the Assistant ND for LIN’s WISH-TV in Indianapolis. He’s currently the Assistant ND for the company’s WOOD-TV in Grand Rapids, MI. The move to WISH reunites him with ND PATTI McGETTIGAN, who’d been the ND at WOOD before taking the ND job in Indianapolis earlier this summer. Andrew’s been the Assistant ND at WOOD for three years and a producer there before that. He’s also worked in Lansing, MI.

Greetings:

There’s a fair amount of activity in this week’s report of news director and news management openings.

There are THREE new ND openings to share with you, and just ONE new ND, though it’s in a top five market. These changes leave my count of ND openings at 27.

We have one new news management opening (it’s a good one). And we have a few items in Names in the News, including a new baby for a Houston ND and his wife.

All that and more after this week’s changes:

NEW NEWS DIRECTOR OPENINGS:

KOB-TV, Albuquerque, NM…JAMIE IOOS has left this Hubbard Broadcasting owned NBC affiliate after just more than a year as ND. Jamie’s been an ND in Las Vegas, worked as a consultant for Crawford Johnson & Northcott, and has worked in newsrooms in Boston, Providence, Cedar Rapids, and Columbia, MO. Her replacement will be the fifth ND in 6 1/2 years.

WTEN-TV, Albany, NY…ROB HUBLER is leaving after 14 months as ND for this Young Broadcating owned ABC affiliate. He’s moving to Florida where he’ll be the new Assistant ND for WOFL-TV in Orlando, the FOX o-and-o there. His replacement will be the fourth ND in just over four years here.

KHQ-TV, Spokane, WA…JONATHAN MITCHELL is leaving to become VP of News for KNTV, the NBC o-and-o in San Jose/San Francisco, CA. More on that below. Jonathan’s been the ND for this Cowles-owned NBC affiliate for the last three years.
