July 23, 2010

Friday, July 30, 2010 UPDATE:

Due to travel (and an obscenely slow internet connection at the Manchester Grand Hyatt in San Diego!) this week’s report will be delayed slightly.  I hope to have it posted by Sunday evening, if not before.

**** ***** ****

Greetings:

We have a busy week, even though there are only a handful of ND moves to report to you.   There are  TWO new ND openings, while a veteran newsman (a news director in two top 25 markets) is the only new ND this week, as he takes a job in Montana.

We now have  30 stations on our list of open ND jobs.

We also have a flurry of paid ads this week for a wide variety of management positions.        Two of those ads are from the same Milwaukee station, and they’re worth reading because they are….shall we say…a little more fun than most.  We also have ads for new morning EP opportunities in San Diego and Las Vegas, a rare ad for a newscast producer, and a repeat of an ad for an EP opening in Orlando.

Sadly, an assignment editor at KSHB-TV in Kansas City was murdered in his home earlier this week.  We have links to stories on that tragedy, as well as details on the death of the father of a Wisconsin ND who’s also been a news director in California and Hawaii.

Finally, there are a number of management moves in Names in the News.

All this…and much more…after this week’s changes.

NEW NEWS DIRECTOR OPENINGS:

WDBD-TV, Jackson, MS…MIKE INGALLS, the only ND this FOX affiliate has ever had, is leaving the station to pursue other opportunities.  Mike joined the station in 2008, prior to its 2009 launch of news.  Mike’s previously worked in New Orleans, Orlando, and in Augusta and Albany, GA.  WDBD is owned by Jackson Broadcasting.

Eck

Eck

KTKA-TV, Topeka, KS…DENISE ECK is leaving her ND job here to become the Assistant ND for WCPO-TV in Cincinnati.  Denise has been the ND here since December 2008, when she was promoted from Executive Producer.  Denise started in our business as a reporter, and worked in Columbia and Joplin, MO, Wichita, and Roanoke before moving into management at KTKA.  KTKA is an ABC affiliate owned by Free State Communications.

NEW NEWS DIRECTORS NAMED:

Maliska

Maliska

KECI/KTVM/KCFW, Missoula, MT…veteran ND GAVIN MALISKA will be the next ND for these three Montana NBC affiliate.  Gavin’s been an ND in Orlando and Indianapolis, and worked in Detroit and Chicago in newsroom management positions.  He began his career in print.  He’ll be based in Missoula, and replaces JIM HARMON who is retiring next month after 30 years with these stations, now owned by Bonten Media.

witi logoNews Content Manager, WITI-TV, Milwaukee, WI

OK, it’s not the grooviest title, but these days, being a manager in a newsroom is about more than producing or reporting or television!  It IS all of those things, of course, but it’s also about the importance of compelling local stories, and figuring out the best way to get them done throughout the day and night. It’s about working in a multi-media world with on-air, mobile, online and whatever comes next. It’s about being a leader, inspiring people to do their best every single day – and holding people accountable when they don’t meet expectations. It’s about LOVING the news business!

We’ve got a longtime manager leaving and while he’s literally irreplaceable, this is a rare opportunity for someone to come in with fresh ideas, insights and skill sets. We’re not giving this position a specific title until we find the right person, when we will know what the title should be. You must have at least 6 years of news management experience and you must get excited about producing, about reporting, about storytelling, about creating compelling content across multiple platforms. Excellent communication and great time management skills, a strong can-do attitude with a commitment to teamwork are all vital for success in this role. And don’t forget the obligatory assisting the VP/News with budgets, hiring, reviews, etc. etc. etc. The hours are long, the work challenging, but that’s why we got into this biz to begin with, right? So in essence, we’re looking for a long-term player committed to the growth, care and feeding of Fox 6 News.

If you’re interested, send us your thoughts and philosophy on what makes a great newsroom even better. No phone calls, please – you’ll hear from us if we like what we see.

Lots of ways to apply:

NICK DUTCHER, who worked on the Assignment Desk at Kansas City’s KSHB-TV, was found murdered in his home earlier this week.  Dutcher was 30 and had worked at the station for more than a year.  His colleagues remember a man who loved life and his music.

And our sympathy to WITI-TV (Milwaukee) ND JIM LEMON, who lost his father last week.  GERALD LEMON was 72 and died of an apparent heart attack while fighting two different forms of cancer.  He was a longtime employee of Southern Pacific, and loved technology and golf.   Jim’s also been an ND in Sacramento and Honolulu.  Your kind note would reach him at: Jim.Lemon@fox6now.com

Greetings:

One of the longest open ND jobs on our list has finally been filled.  That’s one of  TWO new NDs in this week’s report, which features  ONE new ND opening.  Those moves bring our always unofficial total of open ND jobs to 29.

We have lots of other items for you:  a new ad for an EP job in a large Florida market, a repeat of last week’s ad for an ND job in Maine, and lots of items in Names in the News, including two new news managers in Oregon, a Wisconsin ND on the mend after a bad bicycle accident, the death of a former CBS News correspondent, and details on nine local stations honored with News and Documentary Emmy award nominations.

Also this week, the application deadline nears for a news media leadership program aimed at news directors which will cost you very little money.

That’s all below, after this week’s changes:

NEW NEWS DIRECTOR OPENING:

WJAR-TV, Providence, RI…this Media General owned NBC affiliate is advertising for a news director.  The position has been vacant since BETTY JO CUGINI was laid off in April, 2009, after almost eight years as ND and 22 years at the station.  Content Brand Manager CHRIS LANNI has overseen the news department since then, and he will continue as content brand manager.

NEW NEWS DIRECTORS:

WZTV, Nashville, TN…this long-standing opening has been filled as ROBERTA PETTERSON has been named ND.  She’s been the Assistant ND at WEWS-TV in Cleveland (which is now searching for her replacement, as listed below) since last August.  Roberta previously worked in Pittsburgh as the Assistant ND and EP at WTAE-TV and has also worked at WPXI-TV in Pittsburgh and in Tulsa.  She replaces KEN SMITH who left the station last August after nine years as ND.  WZTV is owned by Sinclair and is a FOX affiliate.

Sanders

Sanders

WCTV, Tallahassee, FL…TRISTON SANDERS has been promoted to ND for the Gray Television owned CBS affiliate.  She’s been the Executive Producer here for the past two years, and first joined the station as an anchor/reporter.  She’s also worked in Ft. Myers, and once interned for WCTV while attending Florida State University.  Triston replaces MIKE SMITH who was promoted to GM of another Gray station, WTVY-TV, in Dothan, AL, after 20 years as ND.

July 10, 2010

Greetings:

For a holiday-shortened week, there’s a fair amount of ND changes to report to you.  We have  THREE new openings, and just  ONE new ND in today’s report.

That brings our always unofficial list of open ND jobs to  30. (Please note we’ve deleted the open ND listing for KPTM-TV in Omaha, in light of that station’s decision to turn its news production over to INN in Davenport, IA).

One of the stations with an opening is re-running its paid ad for that position, and we have some new management openings, too.

We have additional information on a memorial service for a former Florida, Ohio, and Indiana ND, whose passing we reported last week, as well as an obituary for a longtime Massachusetts ND.  We’ll tell you about a veteran news manager who’s survived an earthquake during back surgery this week, and a new Assistant ND in Georgia.

That’s all below, right after this week’s changes:

NEW NEWS DIRECTOR OPENINGS:

KVLY-TV, Fargo, ND…JEREMIAH MOERKE is stepping aside as ND for this Hoak Media owned NBC affiliate, but will stay at the station in an yet-to-be-determined role.  He’s been ND here since 2007, when he was promoted from Executive Producer.

KTVL-TV, Medford, OR…MANNY SANTIS has taken a job running the Nightside Assignment Desk for WUSA-TV in Washington, DC.  He’s been the ND for this Freedom Communications owned CBS affiliate since 2008.

KFBB-TV, Great Falls, MT…CHRIS GROGAN is leaving this ABC affiliate to become ND for KJCT-TV in Grand Junction, CO. More on that below.  Chris was ND here for two years.  The station is owned by Max Media of Montana.

NEW NEWS DIRECTORS:

KJCT-TV, Grand Junction, CO…late this afternoon CHRIS GROGAN was named ND for this News Press and Gazette owned ABC affiliate.  We told you above that he’s currently the ND at KFBB-TV in Great Falls, MT.  It’s a return to Grand Junction for Chris, who worked as an anchor/reporter at another station.  He’s also worked in Springfield, MO, and for News 12 Connecticut.  He replaces KARLA STOTTS who left the station after the May book to pursue other opportunities.  Karla was ND here for more than three years.

NAMES IN THE NEWS:

Stutz

Stutz

Old friend MIKE STUTZ is back home after earthshaking back surgery this week.  Mike tells me there was a 5.4 earthquake in San Diego (where the surgery was performed) DURING THE PROCEDURE which shook the operating room but did not affect him.  Mike’s currently the Director of News for News Press and Gazette Broadcasting.  He’s a former ND in San Diego and Jacksonville, FL, and also worked in St. Louis and Milwaukee.  Cheer him up with a funny email to:  mike.stutz@npgco.com

Congratulations to JENNIFER ATCHISON DALE who’s now the Assistant ND for WTVM/WXTX in Columbus, GA.  The move (from her previous job as EP for WMBF-TV in Myrtle Beach, SC) allows her to live closer to her home near Montgomery, AL, and also allows her to stay within Raycom.  Jennifer began her career in Dothan, AL, and has also worked in Mobile, AL.

A memorial service for BILL CRAFTON will be held this Sunday (July 18th) in Carmel, IN (a suburb of Indianapolis).  We told you last week that Bill had died after a long battle with pulmonary fibrosis.  He was 67.  Many of you commented on his well-written blog about that battle.  During his career, he was an ND in Cincinnati, W. Palm Beach, and South Bend, IN.  He started on-air, and once co-anchored with JANE PAULEY in Indianapolis.  Friends will gather at 4:00 on Sunday, July 18th, at the Woodland Springs Club House, 3535 E. 116th St., in Carmel, IN, with a light dinner following.

We have an obituary for another former ND today.

Funeral services will be held tomorrow (Wednesday, July 7) for longtime Springfield, MA, newsman KEITH SILVER, who died last Friday at the age of 80.  Keith spent more than 30 years at WWLP-TV in Springfield, retiring as its news director in 1995.  The station reported on his passing in this story.  The Springfield newspaper, The Republican, ran this story.

July 2, 2010 UPDATE:

I’m sorry to report that BILL CRAFTON died this afternoon.

Bill’s a former ND in Cincinnati, West Palm Beach, and South Bend.  He moved into news management after starting his career on-air.  He once co-anchored here in Indianapolis with JANE PAULEY. He also worked for Medstar, and for the last 12-14 years had owned a business selling accessories to motorcyclists.

Bill was 67.  He’s been suffering from pulmonary fibrosis over the last few years, and had been blogging about his fight with a terminal illness since October, 2008.  His first blog is here.  It’s pretty well written, as you might expect.

As of this writing, his blog has not been updated with news of his passing.  If/when I learn of arrangements, memorials, etc., I’ll post the details here.

Our sympathy to his family and friends.

Greetings:

A busy week for a pre-holiday period, with a handful of ND changes, some interesting items in Names in the News, and a paid ad looking for participants for a forum on new media…and it’s mostly free!

There are  TWO new ND openings this week, and  TWO new NDs were named.  We told you about the biggest of those moves earlier this week, as a Michigan ND heads across the state to Detroit, filling a job that’s been open since September.

We’ve updated our list of news management openings, have an ad for an ND job in South Dakota, and, in Names in the News, a former ND returns to a Big Apple GM’s job, a longtime ND and GM is retiring, a bunch of new EPs have been hired, and we have an obituary for the father of a veteran news director.

All that…and much more…after this week’s changes.

NEW NEWS DIRECTOR OPENINGS:

WXMI-TV, Grand Rapids, MI…we told you earlier this week that TIM DYE was leaving this Tribune owned station to become ND for WXYZ-TV in Detroit.  More on that below.  Tim’s the only ND this FOX affiliate has ever had, joining the staff in 1998 before its 1999 launch of news.

Seebold

Seebold

KCRG-TV, Cedar Rapids, IA…JULIE SEEBOLD has left this Cedar Rapids Gazette owned ABC affiliate for a new job, but she won’t have to move very far.  She’s joining the staff at Frank N. Magid Associates as a consultant.  Julie was the ND here for just over a year.  She’d been an EP and a producer there before her promotion to ND, and began her career as a reporter/photographer in Mason City, IA.

NEW NEWS DIRECTORS NAMED:

Dye

Dye

WXYZ-TV, Detroit, MI…as mentioned above, and as we reported to you earlier this week, TIM DYE has been named ND here.  Tim’s a Michigan native, and has worked in Grand Rapids, MI, for the last 17 years, first as an EP (and later Assistant ND) at WOOD-TV (his second stint at that NBC affiliate) and later as the first ND for Tribune’s FOX affiliate, WXMI-TV. This move reunites him with WXYZ’s new GM, ED FERNANDEZ: they had worked together at WXMI.  Tim has also worked in Saginaw (his home town).  Full disclosure:  I hired Tim at WOOD-TV, and we remain friends.  He’s a solid newsman, a terrific individual, and I’m delighted for him.  At WXYZ, he replaces ANDREA PARQUET-TAYLOR who left the station last September after more than five years as ND for this Scripps-owned ABC affiliate.

WMDT-TV, Salisbury, MD…SARAH TRUITT has been promoted to ND for this ABC affiliate.  She’s been at the station for seven years, working her way up from producer to EP/Assistant ND.  She replaces DAWN MITCHELL who died in late April after suffering a stroke.

NAMES IN THE NEWS:

Davis

Davis

DAVE DAVIS is returning to his old job as GM for New York’s WABC-TV in a move announced today.  He had held that job until 2007, when he was named Executive VP for ABC News.  Dave began his career as a news photographer for KTRK-TV in Houston, eventually became ND at ABC’s WTVD-TV in Raleigh-Durham, then ND for the company’s dominant Philadelphia station, WPVI-TV. He was then promoted to GM in Philly and then in New York before taking the network position.

There are several new Executive Producers to tell you about:

CRYSTAL BRUCE returns to the East Coast and Media General, joining WSAV-TV in Savannah.  She has been producing for KTNV in Las Vegas for the last two years, but worked for Media General’s WCBD-TV before that.

Another new EP at another Media General station:  JULIE ROY joined WBTW-TV in Myrtle Beach, SC, last month.  She had been working for WEWS-TV in Cleveland.  During her time there she served as both the morning EP and Special Projects Producer.

WCTI-TV in New Bern, NC, has named ERIC GREENE as its EP/Assistant ND.  Eric most recently was an EP for WPMT-TV in Harrisburg, PA.  He’s worked in a number of markets as an anchor and reporter.

Buettner

Buettner

Congratulations to old friend GIL BUETTNER on his upcoming retirement…at least from TV.  Gil’s the Station Manager/General Sales Manager for WJFW-TV, the NBC affiliate in the Wausau/Rhinelander, WI, market.  He’s a former ND in Eau Claire and Wausau, WI, and Rochester, NY, and also served as a GM in Kalamazoo/Grand Rapids, MI, and Duluth, MN.  He’s also one of the voices of reason offering good advice on Medialine’s message board, Open Line.  While he’s retiring from TV, he will work full-time as a flight instructor for Wausau Flying Services.  Join me in wishing him well via an email to: gilbuettner@hotmail.com

Mr. Rausch

Mr. Rausch

Finally, condolences to WKRG-TV (Mobile, AL) ND MIKE RAUSCH on the death of his father, LOWELL ‘PETE’ RAUSCH. Mr. Rausch died Wednesday (June 30) at the age of 79 after a long fight against cancer.  Mr. Rausch owned a lumber company in his hometown of Napoleon, OH, and Mike worked there before his career in broadcasting, a career which has led him to ND jobs in Orlando, Portland, OR (two stations), Louisville, and Rochester, NY.  Mike’s also worked in Nashville, Buffalo, Little Rock, and Ft. Wayne.  Your kind note of sympathy will reach Mike via an email to: mike@mikerausch.com
