Greetings:

Once again, an amazing number of changes as a major rating period begins.  There are  THREE new ND openings to report to you, while THREE stations have filled open ND positions.

That means our list of open ND jobs remains at 23.

We have new ads for two of the three largest market ND openings, as well as a new ad for an EP opening in Columbus, OH, and a repeat of last week’s ad for an EP for a suburban New York City stations.

Our Other News Management Openings has a handful of new opportunities, as well.

And in Names in the News, a New York State News Director/Anchor/Fireman was quick to help three tower workers who fell from his station’s tower, and details about the upcoming retirement of a longtime Kansas City newsman.

New News Director Openings:

WTHR-TV, Indianapolis, IN…we reported earlier this week that CAROLYN WILLIAMS has requested a return to her previous role as Assistant ND for this Dispatch Broadcasting owned NBC affiliate.  Carolyn’s a ten year veteran of the station and has been ND since March, 2008, when she was promoted to replace JIM TELLUS when he was promoted to GM.  (You’ll remember that Jim passed away earlier this year and was replaced by JOHN CARDENAS who was the ND of Dispatch’s WBNS-TV in Columbus, OH).  Carolyn’s a former ND at KOTV in Tulsa, and has also worked in Dallas and Tucson.  Learn more about this opportunity in the paid ad below.

WJXT-TV, Jacksonville, FL…longtime Post-Newsweek newswoman MAUREEN “MO” RUDDY-BAKER is stepping down here at the end of the year to pursue the next challenge in her life.  Mo’s been the ND here since August, 2001.  It’s her second tour of duty for this independent (and former CBS affiliate):  in between she served as an EP for Post-Newsweek’s KPRC-TV in Houston.

WJAC-TV, Johnstown, PA…PAM DENNIS has left this Cox-owned NBC affiliate after more than six years as ND.  Pam previously spent three years as the news director for Cox’s WTOV-TV in Steubenville, OH.

Newly Named News Directors:

WNCN-TV, Raleigh, NC…ERIC LUDGOOD will be the next ND for this Media General owned NBC affiliate.  Eric is currently the Assistant ND for WGCL-TV in Atlanta.  He’s been at the station since 2006, and previously worked for CNN.  He’s also worked at WXIA-TV in Atlanta.  In Raleigh, he replaces NANETTE WILSON who left the station in August after seven years as ND there.

WEAU-TV, Eau Claire, WI…ERIC SHEPARD will be the next ND for this Gray TV owned NBC affiliate.  He’s currently the Assistant ND for WNEM-TV in Saginaw, and has previously worked in Detroit, Baltimore, and Raleigh.  He replaces JOHN LaPORTE who left the station in August (after less than a year as ND here) to become News Content Manager for WITI-TV in Milwaukee.

KLDO-TV, Laredo, TX…we’re a little late in reporting that CARLOS SANCHEZ is the new ND for this Entravision owned Univision affiliate.  He’s been there for three months, he tells me, and previously anchored for the Univision station in Sacramento, KUVS-TV. In Laredo, Carlos replaces FELIPE SERRANO who left the station in April after two years as ND.

October 27, 2010 UPDATE:

We have an ND change in a top 30 market today.  CAROLYN WILLIAMS, who’s been ND at WTHR-TV here in Indianapolis for 2 1/2 years, is returning (at her request) to her old job as Assistant News Director.  Carolyn’s been at this Dispatch-owned NBC affiliate for ten years, and is a former ND at KOTV in Tulsa.  She’s also worked in Dallas and Tucson.

We’ll have more on this change, and all the week’s news about news managers, in our next full report.

There was lots of reaction to our mid-week update about an ND change in a top ten market…and that’s the ONLY new ND opening we have in this week’s report.  And there’s just ONE new ND to report, so our count of open ND positions remains at 23.

Also in this week’s newsletter, we have a new ad for an EP position at a suburban New York City station, and we have a revised ad for a North Carolina station which is now looking for an Assistant ND.  And we’re repeating an ad for a producer opening in Columbus, OH.

KHOU-TV, Houston, TX…we told you in an UPDATE on Thursday that KEITH CONNORS will leave the Belo-owned CBS station at the end of November.  Keith’s been ND here for more than five years, spent eight years as ND for Belo’s WCNC-TV in Charlotte, also worked as an ND for Belo’s WVEC-TV in Norfolk, and for WOKR-TV in Rochester, NY.  He’s also worked in Nashville and Toledo, where (full disclosure) I hired him as a producer when I was the ND for WTOL-TV. Earlier this month, KHOU received the National Edward R. Murrow Award for Overall Excellence and the Lonestar Emmy award for Overall Station Excellence, and earlier this year the station won an Alfred I. duPont Award.

Newly Named News Directors:

KTVL-TV, Medford, OR…RICK HOWARD is the new ND for this Freedom Broadcasting owned CBS affiliate.  Rick had earlier served as ND for another Medford station, KDRV-TV, and has also been an ND for KOIN-TV in Portland, OR, and WTVR-TV in Richmond, VA.  He replaces MANNY SANTIS who left the station in July to become the Nightside Assignment Editor for WUSA-TV in Washington, DC.

Also, apologies to two Charleston (SC) news directors.  Last week we mentioned that SCOTT FLANNIGAN was working as ND in that market, but told you the wrong station.  He’s at WCBD-TV.  JAMES WARNER was then/is now/and remains the ND for WCSC. Apologies to both.

Names in the News:

Veteran Chicago newsman DON DuPREE is leaving WBBM-TV to become director of “Roger Ebert Presents at the Movies” which will debut next January.  DuPree and Ebert worked together for more than 15 years on earlier versions of the movie review program.  Don had been the Assistant ND for WBBM.

Another week, another Texas broadcaster heading to print.  Last week we told you of JANET GREGG’s move, this week it’s MARY NELL SANCHEZ. She’s now the city editor for the Laredo Morning Times. She worked for KGNS-TV in Laredo as an EP, ND, and eventually General Manager.  Mary Nell’s also worked in San Antonio and Austin, TX.

Amundson

I’m sorry to tell you that one time Minneapolis ND GIL AMUNDSON died last week of heart failure at the age of 82.  He worked at WTCN-TV (now KARE-TV) for 30 years until his retirement in 1990, serving in a variety of roles including anchor and news director.  Both the Star-Tribune and the Pioneer Press paid tribute to him….just click on the links to read the stories.

October 21, 2010 UPDATE:

Connors

KEITH CONNORS, the ND for Belo’s KHOU-TV (CBS) in Houston, will leave the station in late November after five years as ND.  Keith’s also been an ND for two other Belo stations (WCNC-TV in Charlotte and WVEC-TV in Norfolk) and was also an ND in Rochester, NY.  He also worked in Nashville and Toledo, where (full disclosure) I hired him as a producer when I was the ND for WTOL-TV.

Keith’s departure comes shortly after the station won two National Edward R. Murrow awards (including overall excellence) and the Lonestar Emmy award for Station Excellence.

WAGA-TV, Atlanta, GA…MIKE McCLAIN moves from one FOX o-and-o to another, as he takes over the ND chair here.  Mike’s been the ND at Fox’s WTVT-TV in Tampa for the last 3+ years, and earlier spent five years as ND (and 27 years at the station) at another FOX o-and-o, WBRC-TV in Birmingham, where he began as a photographer.  The move reunites him with GM BILL SCHNEIDER. They worked together in Tampa.  Mike replaces BUDD McENTEE who resigned earlier this month after 19 years as ND at WAGA.

WTVT-TV, Tampa, FL…FOX wasted no time replacing MIKE McCLAIN (see above) here. promoting long time station employee JOHN HOFFMAN. John’s been the Assistant ND here for the last eleven years, and has worked at the station for 23.

KPLC-TV, Lake Charles, LA…CHARLIE HALDEMAN has been named ND for this Raycom-owned NBC affiliate.  Charlie most recently was ND/anchor for KXII-TV in Sherman, TX, leaving there in September after almost four years as ND and evening anchor. He earlier worked in Bryan, TX. At KPLC, he replaces SCOTT FLANNAGAN who left the station last month to become ND at WCBD-TV in Charleston, SC.   Scott spent almost four years as ND at KPLC.

BARB ROETHLER completes the Detroit hat trick as she joins her third Motor City station.  She’s been named the Assistant ND for WXYZ-TV. Barb had been the Managing Editor for WDIV-TV’s website, and earlier had been a producer and EP at WJBK-TV. She’s also been an ND in Lansing, and worked as a producer or on-air in Asheville, NC, Cape Girardeau, MO and Marquette, MI.  GLENN BAR, who’s been the Ass’t. ND at WXYZ, moves to Senior EP for the station’s Detroit 2020 project.

Another one time Michigan ND has a new job.  RON PETROVICH, who’s been an ND in Saginaw, MI, Indianapolis, and Milwaukee, has been named Manager of the Mayo Clinic Center for Social Media.  Ron’s been VP of Medical News Sales for Medstar for the last eleven years.  In addition to his three ND stops, he also worked in Grand Rapids, MI.

Another former ND has a new job…in print.  JANET GREGG has been named Publisher of the Jacksonville (TX) Daily Progress in her hometown. Janet’s a former ND in Waco and Tyler, TX, and was hired to start a Time Warner Cable news operation in the Waco area, but that was shelved when the economy tanked.  She’s also worked in Dallas/Ft. Worth, Houston, and Abilene, TX.

October 11, 2010 UPDATE:

Libin

SCOTT LIBIN, who’s been ND at WCCO-TV in Minneapolis since late 2007, has left the station.  Assistant ND MIKE CAPUTA will serve as the Acting ND.  Scott’s departure comes just a few months after a new GM, BRIEN KENNEDY, arrived from WPEC-TV in West Palm Beach.  Kennedy had earlier worked for CBS.

Many of you know Scott from his time at Poynter, but he’s also been an ND for KSTP-TV in Minneapolis and WGHP-TV in Greensboro/High Point, NC.

Greetings:

Travel has delayed this week’s report, but also allowed me to do publish it on the numerically interesting date of 10/10/10.  A quick archive check showed I did a newsletter on 1/1/1 and 8/8/8.  (I also published on 2/1/2 and 5/6/5…what was I thinking?)

We have  FOUR changes this week:  TWO new openings (one created by the retirement of a veteran ND, the other by a start-up news operation) and  TWO new NDs…both have been NDs before.

That drops our list of open jobs to 24. That list should shrink again next week as I expect at least one open position to be filled.

We have a paid ad for that new news operation…that’s below, along with a repeat of last week’s ad for a Digital Media Manager for a powerhouse California station.

In Names in the News, details about new jobs for two former NDs…one takes another GM job while the other former ND becomes an EP in a top 20 market.

KAVU-TV, Victoria, TX…DON BRADLEY is retiring so this Saga Communications owned ABC affiliate is looking for a new ND.  Don’s been running the newsroom here since June, 2009.  Don began his career in radio, and over 51 years has worked in Springfield MA, New Haven, Decatur, Louisville, Tulsa, St Louis, Memphis, Fort Wayne, and Waco, among other markets.  Don’s wife remained behind in Waco when he took the KAVU position, so this will eliminate a long weekend commute.  He tells me he’ll help the station recruit his replacement.  You can wish him well on his retirement via email to: connieburi@aol.com

XETV, San Diego, CA…CHRISTINE TANAKA returns to this CW affiliate as ND.  Christine worked here from 2000-2004 as Managing Editor and Assignment Manager.  She later became an ND for KIMT-TV in Mason City, IA, and WRBL-TV in Columbus, GA.  Most recently she’s been the Manager of Content Presentation for WCMH-TV in Columbus, OH, a job she began in August.  At XETV, she replaces TAUNA LANGE who left this Group Televisa owned station in July. Tauna returned to her native Idaho and is ND for KIVI-TV in Boise.

KTRV-TV, Boise, ID…speaking of Boise, this FOX affiliate has a new ND…sort of.  BOB JAUNDALDERIS has assumed the role here.  Bob’s been at the station since 1999, was co-news director for a while, and has been director of marketing for the last three years.  ND KELLY CROSS left the station in June to take a position out of TV.  Bob’s been at the station since 1999 when it first launched news.  He’s also worked in Seattle, Portland and Medford, OR, and Sacramento.

One time ND STAN KNOTT has been named GM for WKRN-TV, the Young Broadcasting-owned ABC affiliate in Nashville.  Stan began his career in news, became ND for WBRC-TV in Birmingham, was promoted to GM there, and eventually became GM for two other FOX o-and-o’s, WDAF-TV in Kansas City and WOFL-TV in Orlando.
