We have TWO new ND openings to share with you this week, and ONE newly named ND. That brings our count of open ND jobs to 22.

We have a new help wanted ad for an EP/Special Projects. And in Names in the News, lots of activity to report.

All that’s below, after this week’s changes:

New News Director Openings:

WTNH/WCTX-TV, New Haven, CT…KIRK VARNER is leaving this LIN owned ABC/MyTV duopoly to become ND at WKRC-TV in Cincinnati. (More on that below). Kirk’s been ND here for nine years.

KRNV-TV, Reno, NV…MARY BETH FARRELL is giving up her dual role as GM and ND to concentrate on her GM responsibilities, so this Sunbelt Communications owned NBC affiliate is searching for a new ND. Mary Beth’s held both roles for about a year.

New News Directors:

Varner

WKRC-TV, Cincinnati, OH…KIRK VARNER will be the next ND for this Newport-owned CBS affiliate. As mentioned above, Kirk has spent the last nine years running the news department for LIN’s WTNH/WCTX-TV (ABC/MyTV) in Hartford, CT. He’s also worked in New York, Boston, Buffalo, spent four years as ND for ESPN’s SportsCenter, and also ran a Time Warner Cable News operation for six years. In Cincinnati, he replaces ELBERT TUCKER who left the station in September to become ND for WBNS-TV in Columbus, OH.

Help Wanted Ad:

EP, Special Projects, WTMJ-TV, Milwaukee, WI:

Duties:
Produce demo-targeted, in-depth stories; research stories, set up and conduct interviews, log and write stories; work with investigative, health and consumer reporters on their projects; work with other departments to coordinate graphics, editing, and teases; post content to website; produce half-hour investigative, health and consumer specials; fill in as newscast line producer on occasion; and other duties as assigned by management; candidate must be willing to work odd, long hours and be willing to travel.

Skills:
Candidate must have strong writing and interviewing skills; knowledge of investigative procedures; ability to coordinate graphics, video and web content; and the ability to produce demo-targeted, in-depth, compelling stories; ability to work closely with others under deadline pressure; excellent written and verbal communication skills necessary.

Experience:
Minimum of three years news producing experience preferred; must have field-producing experience.

Education:
College degree with broadcast communication or journalism emphasis preferred.

Schwaid

WGCL-TV (Atlanta) ND STEVE SCHWAID is assuming some additional responsibilities within station owner Meredith. He’s been named VP of Digital Content for Meredith. Steve joined the company in June, 2008, when he took the job in Atlanta. He also spent many years working for NBC in a variety of roles.

Congratulations to SHAWNDA COLE who’s been promoted to morning EP for WKMG-TV in Orlando. She had been the 6:00 producer there.

TIFFANI LUPENSKI has been named Assistant News Director for KATU-TV in Portland, OR. She spent the last year or so as an EP at KCPQ-TV in Seattle, worked as an EP and producer for KUSA-TV in Denver for six years, and also worked for CNN. Tiffani also worked as a reporter/anchor in Birmingham, AL, and Lake Charles, LA.

CORRINE GENSLER returns to Western New York as the joins WHAM-TV in Rochester, NY, as Executive Producer. She’s been working for WKRN-TV in Nashville for the past five years, but she produced in Elmira before that.

Johnson

A veteran North Dakota newsman is returning to the anchor desk. CHARLEY JOHNSON will anchor for WDAZ-TV, the Forum Communications owned ABC affiliate in Grand Forks, ND. He stepped down as GM for KVLY/KXJB in Fargo earlier this year. Charley spent more than 30 years as an anchor and/or news director in Fargo.

Finally, apologies to CARRIE HOFMANN whose last name I misspelled last week in reporting her move to Charlotte as the new Assistant ND for WCNC-TV.

Varner

Congratulations to KIRK VARNER who’s been named ND for Newport’s WKRC-TV (ABC) in Cincinnati. Kirk’s been VP and Director of News for WTNH/WCTX in Hartford for the past 9+ years. That’s the LIN owned ABC/MyTV duopoly there. He’s also worked in New York, Boston, and Buffalo and for ESPN.

Kirk replaces ELBERT TUCKER who moved north in September to become ND for WBNS-TV in Columbus, OH. Elbert was ND in Cincy for nine years, too.

WWL-TV, New Orleans, LA…after more than 30 years of service, CHRIS SLAUGHTER has left this Belo-owned CBS affiliate, just one year after the station won a George Foster Peabody Award. He was promoted to ND in 2007 and had been Assistant ND before that, and earlier worked on the assignment desk. It’s the only TV station for which he has worked.

Newly Named News Director:

KAVU-TV, Victoria, TX…HENRY MEDRANO is the new ND for this Saga Communications owned ABC affiliate. Henry most recently served as the ND for KVEO-TV in Brownsville, TX. He’s also worked in San Antonio and for CBS Newspath. He replaces DON BRADLEY who retired after just over a year as ND here and a 50 year career in news.

5. 32. 2. 7. 9. Those are the Chicago TV stations for which TODD WOOLMAN has worked as he moves to his FIFTH Windy City TV station. He’s the new EP of afternoon newscasts for WMAQ-TV. Todd’s been the morning EP for WFLD-TV for the last seven months and previously was the Assistant ND at WBBM-TV. His Chicago tenure was interrupted by a two year gig as ND for WPTV in W. Palm Beach. Before Florida, Todd worked at WLS-TV and WGN-TV. He’s also worked in Seattle, Detroit, South Bend and Kalamazoo.

CHRIS PANTALEO returns to his native Detroit to become the new morning EP for WXYZ-TV. He’s been the evening EP for WXMI-TV in Grand Rapids since 2000, where he worked with ND TIM DYE, who’s now the ND at WXYZ.

CARRIE, meet CORRIE. CORRIE, meet CARRIE. That’s the conversation at WCNC-TV in Charlotte, where CARRIE HOFMANN has been hired by ND CORRIE HARDING. Carrie will be the Assistant ND for this Belo-owned NBC affiliate. She’s been an EP for KMGH-TV in Denver, where she’s worked in a variety of roles since 1999. She’s also worked in Phoenix and Milwaukee.

One time ND LENA SADIWSKYJ is now the Editor in Chief for Taptu.com, whose new iPhone app, mytaptu, is getting rave reviews. It’s a social news aggregator. Check it out here. We’re a little late this week, in part due to an attempted vacation…and in part because we have NO new news director moves to report.

That’s the first time we’ve published without ND changes in the 14 years we’ve been doing a (more-or-less) weekly report.

That leaves our list of open ND jobs at 21.

That full list, as always, is at the end of our report. And we always appreciate hearing from our readers with updates/changes/corrections.

But don’t turn away quite yet. We have an ad for an Assistant ND job in a top ten market as well as some updates to our listing of other news management jobs.

They may be putting the band back together (to steal a line from the Blues Brothers movie) in Minneapolis, where HAYLEY HERST is the new morning EP at Fox’s KMSP-TV. The move reunites her with News Director BILL DALLMAN: they once held the same jobs at KDVR-TV in Denver. Hayley’s a one-time ND in Reno. She’s also worked in Las Vegas.

MEG GREEN scores the Raycom hat trick as she is moving to WOIO/WUAB in Cleveland as the Nightside EP. She’s currently an EP for the company’s Baton Rouge, LA, station, WAFB-TV. She’s also worked for WMC-TV in Memphis….another Raycom station.

One time Houston ND (Univision’s KXLN-TV) DEANNA LANDRON-REYES has been named EP for Central Florida News 13 in Orlando.

JULIE PEARL has joined WTMJ-TV in Milwaukee as an EP. She had been working at WPTV in West Palm Beach, FL.

Congratulations to Raycom Regional News Director STEVE ACKERMANN and his wife MEG on the birth of their first grandchild, JAMESON COY ROWLAND. There are TWO new News Directors in this week’s report, both of them veteran NDs taking on new challenges. And, to the best of my knowledge, there are NO new ND openings.

That brings our count of open ND jobs to just 21.

We have a new ad for an Assistant ND opening in a top ten market. And we’re repeating two ads for very attractive ND jobs, and another ad for an Ohio EP position.

Speaking of EP openings…we have 19 listed in our Other News Management Openings. Four of them are in Ohio, and three of those in Cincinnati, including a new one just added this week.

WSYX/WTTE is looking for a dynamic, energetic leader for its Executive Producer.

The EP will oversee production of newscasts and special programming. He/She will work closely with assignment desk and producers on coverage, story selection, live coverage, assignment of reporters and crews. The position will also help create, develop and implement strategies to improve product and ratings. Columbus is a young and vibrant city, a great place for singles or to raise a family.

The candidate must have at least three years of newscast producing experience.

Congratulations to onetime WDIO-TV (Duluth, MN) News Director and longtime anchor DENNIS ANDERSON, who plans to retire in the next few months. Dennis has been at the station since 1969, earlier served as an ND and anchor in Fargo, ND, and (according to the station bio) was the first journalist to report the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald. I don’t know Dennis, but he appears to also have an amazing range of interests. Take a few seconds to check out his WDIO-TV bio here.

WARREN STEWART heads south to become the new Assistant News Director for Hearst’s WDSU-TV in New Orleans. Warren has been an EP for WSYX/WTTE-TV in Columbus, OH. He’s also worked in Hartford and Orlando.

The Broadcast Image Group has named JOSH RICKEL to head its new Evolving and Mobile Media Division. Name sound familiar? It should…Josh is the son of Broadcast Image’s LARRY and STEPHANIE RICKEL. Before joining the family owned consulting firm, Josh was an attorney for a Washington, DC, law firm, and served as a law clerk for both the NAB and for former FCC chairman MICHAEL POWELL, among other jobs.
