Thursday, August 4, 2011 UPDATES:

Barrs

Congratulations to MARIA BARRS who’s been named General Manager for KXTV, the Gannett owned ABC affiliate in Sacramento. It’s a return to California for Maria who worked in several California markets earlier in her career, including Sacramento. We told you below that she is leaving Fox’s KDFW-TV after 17 years, 13 as news director.

More in this story in our regular weekly newsletter later this week.

**** **** ****
As anchors are so fond of saying…”Updating our earlier story….”.

MARIA BARRS tells me her new job will be announced at noon Eastern time today (though she specifically noted the time of the announcement would be 9:00 AM Pacific time) and said only that the announcement (and presumably the position) would be “in a place much cooler than Dallas..temp-wise at least.”  She added that it is NOT Los Angeles.

Now that’s a tease worthy of any producer.  Check back here and I’ll update the site when I can.

Wednesday, August 3, 2011 UPDATE:

A Dallas-Fort Worth newspaper is reporting that longtime (13 years) KDFW-TV News Director MARIA BARRS is leaving that FOX o-and-o.  The article quotes KDFW GM KATHY SAUNDERS as ‘appreciating Maria’s hard work’ during her 17 years at the station.  The story goes on to speculate that she is headed to California for family reasons, and later speculates that she’s headed to KTTV/KCOP-TV in Los Angeles, where her former Assistant ND at KDFW, KINGSLEY SMITH, arrived in June as the ND.

Maria first joined KDFW in 1994 as Managing Editor and was promoted to ND in 1998.  She’s also been an ND in Salinas, CA, and has worked in Sacramento, St. Louis, and Redding, CA.

I tried to reach Maria tonight without success.  I’ll update this site when I hear from her.

More on this story…and some other changes…in our full newsletter later this week (though it may be delayed by my attendance at NABJ in Philadelphia.

Greetings:

Lots of movement among the news director ranks this week, much of it in smaller markets.  We have SIX newly named NDs, and TWO new openings.

That means there are, by my count, 30 stations looking for a news director.

We have just ONE new news management opening.  In Names in the News, new jobs for two veteran news directors, and a new EP in New York.

This week, our industry lost a man who had an amazing impact on TV news during a long and storied career.  ELMER LOWER died at the age of 98.  If you don’t know his story, I hope you’ll spend a few minutes checking it out.  More on Elmer’s life and career below, including how I once turned this icon into a barking dog…at least on TV.

That, and more, after this week’s changes:

Newly Named News Directors:

Silva

WSCV-TV, Miami, FL…veteran Miami newswoman HELGA SILVA starts next week as VP/News for this Telemundo owned station.  Helga spent ten years as ND for WLTV, the Univision station in Miami.  She’s also been an ND for the Telemundo and Univision stations in New York City.  Most recently, she’s been the EP of the Telemundo show Persiguiendo Injusticias, an unsolved crime program.  To the best of my knowledge, Migdalia Figueroa had been ND here since 2005.

Ward

KEYT-TV, Santa Barbara, CA…C.J. WARD has been promoted to news director here.  He’s worked for this Smith Media ABC affiliate since 2002.  He’s been anchoring the evening shows but will give up the late news with this promotion.  He’s previously worked for two stations in Phoenix, as well as stations in Fresno, Lansing, MI, and Palm Springs, CA.  He succeeds JIM BUNNER who left the station in June after almost five years as news director.

Lauber

WSAW-TV, Wausau, WI…Anchor/reporter MIKEL LAUBER has been promoted to ND for this Gray Television owned CBS affiliate. He’s been at the station since 2007 and is a Wisconsin native, having grown up in Fond du Lac.  He replaces SUSAN RAMSETT, who left the station a few weeks ago when she was promoted to ND for Gray’s KOLN/KGIN-TV in Lincoln, NE, after just over four years as ND.

Snider

WOAY-TV, Oak Hill, WV…SCOTT SNIDER is the new ND for this ABC affiliate.  Scott is currently ND and anchor for WDTV in Bridgeport, WV (more on that below).  He’s worked there for 13 years, first joining the staff as a reporter, then anchor, then assistant ND, and was named news director in 2004.  At WOAY, he replaces veteran newsman BOB BRUNNER who has retired.  Bob spent six years as ND and anchor for this Thomas Broadcasting owned station.

Brocato

WDTV, Bridgeport, WV…JOE BROCATO has been promoted to News Director here, replacing the above-mentioned SCOTT SNIDER, who was ND for seven years.  Joe has worked for this Withers Broadcasting owned CBS affiliate since 2000.  He is currently the Sports Director.  In addition, WDTV anchor/reporter NATE SMAIL has been promoted to the newly reopened position of Assistant News Director.

Dunster

KECI/KTVM/KCFW-TV…Missoula, MT…SEAN DUNSTER is being promoted to ND for Bonten Media’s cluster of NBC affiliates across Montana.  He’s been the Assistant ND, based in Bozeman.  Sean’s been in Bozeman a year.  He previously worked for WCPO-TV in Cincinnati for 22 years in a variety of roles, from news to sports to EP of the station’s special projects unit.  He also has worked in Dayton, OH, and Lima, OH, where his father, GEORGE DUNSTER was ND for almost 20 years at WLIO-TV.  Sean replaces GAVIN MALISKA who is returning to Florida as ND for WJHG-TV in Panama City after one year in Montana.

New News Director Openings:

Reams

WHSV-TV, Harrisonburg, VA…after five years as ND here, ED REAMS is leaving to be the new Assistant ND for Hearst’s WISN-TV in Milwaukee.  It’s a return to Hearst for Ed, who spent seven years as a reporter and fill-in anchor for the company’s WDSU-TV in New Orleans.  He’s also worked in Atlanta, Raleigh, and Roanoke, VA., but he began his career as a reporter and photojournalist at WHSV in 1990.  The station is an ABC affiliate and is owned by Gray Television.

Bresnahan

KREX-TV, Grand Junction, CO…KEIRA BRESNAHAN has left the station to be a full time Mom.  Keira gave birth to a baby boy named Ford in February.  She’s worked for this Hoak Media owned CBS affiliate since 1999, first joining the station as a reporter, and has been ND since July, 2001.  She also anchored for the station…here’s her farewell on-air.

Obituary:

Elmer Lower

ELMER LOWER died Tuesday, July 26, at the age of 98.  He was truly one of the pioneers in our industry.  I’m biased because I had the pleasure of knowing him, but he held major roles at the three original networks, including serving as President of ABC News from 1963-1974.  During the time, the then-struggling network hired PETER JENNINGS, TED KOPPEL, FRANK REYNOLDS, SAM DONALDSON and many others.  He later went on to a teaching career, including a short stint as interim dean of our shared alma mater, the University of Missouri School of Journalism.

I hope you’ll permit me a personal story of our first meeting.  In April, 1975, Elmer visited the journalism school and stopped at the NBC affiliate the University owns, KOMU-TV, during the noon news.  I was producing and was told to include a sound bite from an interview Elmer had done the night before.  That interview was preceded by a package on the dog pound (done by current NBC Correspondent MARK POTTER).  Someone (probably me) had failed to cue Mark’s audio cart, so the package didn’t air.  We went back to anchor SALLY FITZ (who went on to anchor at WSVN-TV in Miami) who ad libbed and then introduced Elmer’s interview.

Unfortunately, what came up was the tail (pun intended) end of the dog pound story and two dogs going “Woof.  Woof.”

Elmer, News Director JACK HUBBARD, and Department Chair DAVE DUGAN were all in the control room.  We all froze and looked at Elmer.  Luckily, he laughed heartily, and so I was allowed to graduate a few weeks later. Had he not laughed, I might still be there.

Ironically, Elmer was the graduation speaker a few weeks later and, of course, included the story.  Fortunately he left out the names, saving my parents the embarrassment.

That sparked a long friendship, which regularly included a Christmas card with a detailed personal note from Elmer for many years.  Given the names in his rolodex, it’s a bit of the measure of the man.

Funeral services will be private.  A public memorial service will be held later. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Elmer Lower Fund, Missouri School of Journalism, 120 Neff Hall, Columbia, MO 65211.

Names in the News:

Congratulations to longtime Louisiana newsman CHRIS SLAUGHTER who’s back where he belongs…in a Louisiana newsroom.  Chris is now an EP for WAFB-TV in Baton Rouge, a move which reunites him with station GM SANDY BRELAND. They worked together at WWL-TV in New Orleans, where Chris succeeded Sandy as ND in 2007.  Chris spent 30 years at WWL, including 3+ as ND.  At WAFB, he’ll be working with the station’s investigative unit and also working with reporters on their daily stories. You can congratulate Chris via email: christopherslaughter2@gmail.com

Cugini

Another longtime station employee turned ND, WJAR-TV’s BETTY JO CUGINI, has a new job.  She’s the new media supervisor in the marketing and communications department at the University of Rhode Island.  Betty Jo spent 22 years at WJAR, the last 7 1/2 as the station’s first female news director, before she was laid off in 2009.  She also worked for WLNE-TV in Providence and worked at a radio station in Rhode Island.

The New York Daily Newsreports that AMY COHEN has been promoted from producer to executive producer of the 5:00 and 6:00 news at WNYW-TV in New York City.  She replaces JERRY ANDREWS who was promoted to Managing Editor.  She’s worked at the station since 2008.

Tuesday, July 26, 2011 UPDATE:

Elmer Lower

I’m sorry to report that ELMER LOWER died today at the age of 98.  Elmer was President of ABC News from 1963 to 1974 and oversaw a huge increase in the size of the network’s news department.  During his time as president, he okayed the hiring of PETER JENNINGS, TED KOPPEL, FRANK REYNOLDS, and SAM DONALDSON, among others.  During his long career, he worked for Life Magazine, as well as CBS and NBC.  He retired from ABC in 1978 and went into education, and served at one point as interim dean of the University of Missouri School of Journalism.

Elmer received a Lifetime Achievement EMMY in 1975.

I had the privilege of meeting Elmer on several occasions, and he was a class act.  I received a Christmas card from him for many years, usually with a lengthy personal note, which was sadly far more than I ever sent him.

His passing will be covered in the mass media, so you can…and should…learn more about his remarkable career.

Greetings:

Terry Graham

July 8, 1955 – July 16, 2011

Funeral services will be held tomorrow for veteran news director TERRY GRAHAM. Terry died last Saturday, July 16th, after a long illness.  He had just turned 56.  Terry spent just a few months this year as ND for WCJB-TV in Gainesville, FL, and earlier was the ND/Anchor for WFXL-TV in Albany, GA, and also worked in Mississippi.

Terry is survived by longtime friend Melissa Howard, a brother, and two sisters. Our sympathy to his family, friends, and co-workers.

In our regular business, there are TWO new news directors this week, and TWO new openings.  All involve veteran news directors.

Those changes bring out count of open ND jobs to 32.

One of those open ND jobs in advertised below, along with an ad for an EP opening at a CBS o-and-o in California.  And we have an ad for a great training opportunity for news directors.

There’s a lot of movement in our Names in the News section, which also includes information about seven local stations nominated for National EMMY awards.

That, and more, after this week’s changes:

Newly Named News Directors:

NewsChannel 8, Washington, DC…we’re a little tardy in reporting that JOE DeFEO is the new ND for this Albritton-owned cable news operation.  Joe’s the former ND for WBFF-TV, the Sinclair-owned FOX affiliate in Baltimore.  He also served as VP/News for Sinclair.  The channel has undergone several format changes recently.

KBAK/KBFX-TV, Bakersfield, CA…CRISTI JESSEE is the new ND here.  We told you last week that Cristi was leaving her job as ND for KSAX-TV in Alexandria, MN.  It’s a return to California for Cristi, who previously worked as a reporter in Sacramento.  She also worked as a field producer in Los Angeles and as a reporter in North Dakota and Little Rock.  At KBAK, she replaces DOUG BARDEN who left this Fisher Broadcasting owned CBS/FOX duopoly in June to become ND for KSBY-TV in San Luis Obispo, CA.

New News Directors Openings:

Han

New York 1, New York, NY…longtime news director BERNIE HAN has been promoted to VP/News for all the Time-Warner 24 Hour News Channels.  She’s been at NY1 since 1992, when she was hired as a writer.  Bernie became Assistant ND in 1997, news director in 2003, and VP/News in 2005.

Baer

WGGB-TV, Springfield, MA…DAVID BAER has left this ABC affiliate after more than three years as ND.  Dave’s a former ND in Buffalo, Providence, Indianapolis, and Portland, ME.  WGGB is owned by Gormally Broadcasting.  One note…the interim ND here will be CISSY BAKER, the former DC bureau chief for Tribune Broadcasting.

Executive Producer, KOVR-TV, Sacramento, CA:

THINK TWICE BEFORE APPLYING FOR THIS JOB!!!!

Why??

– You will be expected to be aggressive and fearless.
– You will be expected to be innovative.
– You will be expected to take ownership of our number one late news in town.
– You will be expected to work harder and dig deeper on stories.. covering the press release isn’t going to do it.
– You will be expected to lead, and make the tough decisions on a moment’s notice.

In other words, you will be expected to do all the things your current station won’t allow. This is not a job, this is a career maker. It will be difficult and challenging, but if you love news.. it will also be the most fun you’ve ever had

We are built on turning the important stories into interesting ones that compel viewers to watch. We ask the tough questions, and don’t let lawmakers off the hook when all they want to do is spin. We are a CBS Owned and Operated station, nestled between two beautiful rivers, and an hour from either San Francisco, Lake Tahoe, and Napa.

Applicants must have producing experience. Some managerial experience is preferred.

Apply for this position online by going to www.cbs13.com and clicking on careers:

Training Opportunity:

The Kneeland Project is accepting applications until next Friday, July 29 for their October 12-15, 2011 session in Austin, Texas.

Thanks to Kneeland’s generous funders, this opportunity is nearly free for 18 selected participants. The Kneeland Project pays for all tuition costs as well as hotel and several meals. Participants cover only their transportation and a few meals — Kneeland takes care of the rest.

• What you need to do now to win 2012 election coverage
• How social media continues to reshape the face of our business, and what you must do today
• How your internal and external systems need to be revolutionized to meet new challenges
• Leading Millennials
• Ethics and leadership in a 24-hour socially networked world

Selected news directors will be joined by some of the best and brightest leaders in the industry, but they won’t provide didactic, one-way lectures. On the contrary. Kneeland is seeking applications from news directors with high-level expertise, insight, and experience to make a truly unique opportunity.

It’s an intensive program unlike any other. It’s practical. It’s highly interactive. It produces long-lasting results. News Directors return to their stations refreshed and ready to tackle the sometimes overwhelming challenges newsrooms now face.

July 19, 2011 UPDATE:

Terry Graham

1955-2011

Funeral services will be held next Saturday, July 23rd, in Albany, GA, for longtime news director and anchor TERRY GRAHAM. Terry died Saturday, July 16th, at the age of 56 after a long illness.  Terry was a News Director in Gainesville, FL, Augusta, GA, and Meridian, MS.  We reported in last Friday’s newsletter that he recently left WCJB-TV in Gainesville just a few months after he arrived there.

Terry is survived by longtime friend Melissa Howard, a brother, and two sisters.  Our sympathy to his family, friends, and co-workers.

**** ***** ****

Greetings:

A busy week and a full report for you, featuring FOUR new news directors (we introduced you to three of them in a Tuesday afternoon UDPATE), and FIVE new openings.

That brings our count of open ND jobs to 31.

One of those newly opened jobs is featured in a paid ad this week, and we have another new ad for an EP job in California.  We’ve also got an for a producer job in Ft. Myers.

And we have ads for two great opportunities for training, an ad from Poynter highlighting two upcoming seminars, and another ad from the Carole Kneeland Project offering a training session for news directors.

Lots of items in Names in the News, most of which involve people returning to stations for which they once worked.

Is it a trend?  Could it happen to you? What are the warning signs?

(Sorry, I’ve been watching too much local news.)

All that and more after this week’s long list of ND changes:

Newly Named News Directors:

Schwaid

WTXF-TV, Philadelphia, PA…we reported earlier this week that STEVE SCHWAID is returning to Philadelphia as VP/News Director for this FOX o-and-o.  Steve is currently VP of Digital Content and News for Meredith Broadcasting, based at WGCL-TV, Meredith’s CBS affiliate in Atlanta. He first joined Meredith in 2008 as ND for WGCL. Earlier in his career, Steve served as ND for WCAU-TV in Philly, part of a long career with NBC. He was VP of News and Programming for the NBC owned stations, oversaw the transition team when NBC bought KNTV in San Jose/San Francisco, and was ND for WVIT-TV in Hartford. He’s also been an ND in Tampa and Portland, ME, and worked in Dayton and Charlotte. At WTXF, he replaces KINGSLEY SMITH who was promoted to VP/News for Fox’s KTTV/KCOP-TV in Los Angeles after 3+ years as ND there.

Fabrizio

WSAZ-TV, Charleston/Huntington, WV…in another move we reported on Tuesday, DAN FABRIZIO will be the next ND for WSAZ.  He most recently was ND at WLNE-TV in Providence, and earlier served as a news director for WCBD-TV in Charleston, SC.  He replaces GROVER TADLOCK as ND for this Gray Television owned NBC affiliate.  Grover was ND there for not quite two years.

Maliska

WJHG-TV, Panama City, FL…GAVIN MALISKA returns to Florida as the ND for this Gray Television owned NBC affiliate.  For the last year, Gavin’s been the ND for the Bonten Media group of NBC affiliates in Montana, based at KECI-TV in Missoula.  Before that, Gavin was the ND for WOFL-TV, the FOX o-and-o in Orlando.  He’s also been an ND for WXIN-TV in Indianapolis, and worked for FOX owned stations in Detroit and Chicago.  At WJHG, Gavin replaces MARK WILDMAN who left the station in March after four months as news director.

Copley

KIMT-TV, Mason City, IA…JAIME COPLEY has been promoted to news director here.  Jaime’s worked at the station for almost ten years.  She had been the Executive Producer and an anchor for this New Vision owned CBS affiliate, and you can see the announcement of her promotion here. She replaces GREG BERRY who left in January when he was promoted to Assistant News Director of another New Vision station, WIAT-TV in Birmingham, AL.

New News Director Openings:

Walsh

WROC-TV, Rochester, NY…JERRY WALSH is being promoted to a corporate position for station owner Nexstar, so this CBS affiliate is looking for his replacement.  Jerry’s been ND here for more than four years, earlier had been an ND in Utica and an interim ND at a station in Albany, NY.

Aubrey

KOAA-TV, Colorado Springs, CO…after 17 years with the station, the last eight as ND, CINDY AUBREY is leaving to take a job in city government as Chief Communications Officer for a new mayor in Colorado Springs.  Before being promoted to news director, Cindy was the creative services director for this Cordillera Communications owned NBC affiliate.

Graham

WCJB-TV, Gainesville, FL…TERRY GRAHAM has left this ABC affiliate after only a few months as news director.  He most recently was ND and anchor for WFXL-TV in Albany, GA, leaving that job in April.  He’s also worked in Meridian, MS.  (Update:  Please note that Terry passed away last weekend.  Note the obituary above.)

KECI/KTVM/KCFW-TV, Missoula, MT…as reported above, GAVIN MALISKA is returning to Florida to be the ND for WJHG-TV in Panama City.  He’s been the ND for this group of Bonten Media owned NBC affiliates for the last year.

Jessee

KSAX-TV, Alexandria, MN…CRISTI JESSEE is leaving for a new job which will be announced next week.  Cristi has been ND for this Hubbard owned ABC station since August, 2009, and earlier worked in Sacramento as a reporter.  She’s also worked as a field producer in Los Angeles, and as a reporter for stations in Grand Forks, ND, and Little Rock.

The Kneeland Project is accepting applications until Friday, July 29 for their October 12-15, 2011 session in Austin, Texas.

Thanks to Kneeland’s generous funders, this opportunity is nearly free for 18 selected participants. The Kneeland Project pays for all tuition costs as well as hotel and several meals. Participants cover only their transportation and a few meals — Kneeland takes care of the rest.

• How your internal and external systems need to be revolutionized
• Leading Millennials
• Ethics and leadership in a 24-hour socially networked world

Selected news directors will be joined by some of the best and brightest leaders in the industry, but they won’t provide didactic, one-way lectures. On the contrary. Names in the News:

MARY BAYNES moves south (but stays in the CBS family) as she becomes the new weekend EP for KCBS/KCAL-TV in Los Angeles.  She’s been the Nightside EP for sister-CBS o-and-o KOVR-TV in Sacramento (the station is advertising for her replacement above). She joined KOVR four years ago as the weekend producer, and quickly moved to 10:00 producer and then Nightside EP.

Think you can’t go home again?  Not if you ask these news managers who are returning to their old stations this week:

BRIAN NEAL returns to WXII-TV in Winston-Salem, as the morning EP.  Most recently Brian was the Nightside EP for WGHP-TV in that market, but much earlier in his career he produced the 11:00 news for WXII.  He later was promoted to KCRA-TV, the Hearst sister station in Sacramento, as a producer.  He also worked for KPIX-TV in San Francisco before returning to North Carolina.

Also changing jobs in the same market and returning to an earlier employer is LEASA CONZE. She’s the new Assistant News Director for KVOA-TV in Tucson, where she worked earlier in her career as an anchor.  She’s spent the last 18 years across town at KOLD-TV as a reporter, anchor, and producer.

Finally, JUSTIN BARFIELD returns to KHNL-TV in Honolulu as EP.  He’s a former producer there.  He’s spent the last five years as EP for KFSN-TV in Fresno, and also worked as a producer for KNTV in San Jose/San Francisco.

And apparently former news directors-turned-general managers can play the ‘back to my old station game’.  NICK MATESI returns to KKTV in Colorado Springs, CO, as GM.  Nick was ND there from 2003-2008, and earlier served as a news director in Youngstown, OH.  He currently is GM of sister-Gray Television station KOLO-TV in Reno, NV.

July 9, 2011

Tuesday, July 12, 2011 UPDATE:

Several changes of note today, all involving veteran NDs.

Schwaid

The biggest move involves STEVE SCHWAID, who’s returning to Philadelphia to become Vice President and News Director for WTXF-TV, the FOX o-and-o there.  Steve is currently VP of Digital Content and News for Meredith Broadcasting, based at WGCL-TV, Meredith’s CBS affiliate in Atlanta.  He first joined Meredith in 2008 as ND for WGCL.  Earlier, Steve spent several years as ND for WCAU-TV in Philly, part of a long career with NBC.

And there are two other ND changes since Friday’s newsletter:

DAN FABRIZIO has been named ND for WSAZ-TV in Charleston/Huntington, WV.  He most recently spent eight months as ND for WLNE-TV in Providence.  Dan’s been an ND in Charleston, SC, and worked for many years in Columbus, OH.

Maliska

And GAVIN MALISKA is returning to Florida as ND for WJHG-TV in Panama City, FL.  Gavin has spent the last year as ND for Bonten Media’s multi-station group of NBC affiliates in Montana.  Gavin was the ND for WOFL-TV, the FOX o-and-o in Orlando, before moving to Montana.  He’s also been a news director for WXIN-TV in Indianapolis and worked for FOX owned stations in Chicago and Detroit.

Much more on all these developments in our next full edition later this week.

**** ***** ****

Greetings:

Just ONE new news director and ONE new opening in this week’s edition, so our count of open ND jobs drops to 30.

But keep reading!  You’ll find a new ad for a producer position in sunny Florida, and a repeat of an ad for a promotion producer in sunny (well, maybe not this week) Phoenix.  Be sure to pass that information along to anyone you know who might be looking.

And we also have an ad for two upcoming seminars at Poynter.

In Names in the News, a former Los Angeles and Seattle ND has a new job.  We have information about two Texas news managers;  one who is staying, and another who is arriving.

All that, and more, after this week’s changes.

Newly Named News Director:

Eisenman

WJCL/WGTS-TV, Savannah, GA…JULIE EISENMAN is on the job already as ND for this ABC/FOX duopoly.  She most recently was ND for WICU-TV in Erie, PA, a job she held for three years before leaving in March.  Julie previously worked at other stations in Erie.   She replaces MICHAEL SULLIVAN who left this New Vision TV station in May after four years in his second stint as ND here.

New News Director Opening:

WXXA-TV, Albany, NY…GARY LaPLANTE is returning to Boston as Assistant News Director for WFXT-TV, the FOX o-and-o there, leaving an ND opening here.  Gary’s been ND here for more than three years, crossing the street from WTEN-TV, where he was the Assistant News Director.   He has family in Boston, and has previously worked there, in addition to Providence and Hartford.  WXXA is owned by Newport Television.

Aegerter

And updating one item from last week….we told you that MACRADEE AEGERTER was leaving KGWN-TV in Cheyenne, WY, for a new job, but at publishing time we didn’t know where .  Now, we know.  She’s joining WDAF-TV in Kansas City as a reporter.  Macradee was ND for KGWN for a year and a half, and worked there since 2006, first as a sports reporter, then sports director, before becoming ND last year.

Names in the News:

Dean

ALICIA DEAN joins KXAN-TV in Austin, TX, as the Assistant News Director. She’s been working for KNSD-TV in San Diego as a reporter, though she began there as an Executive Producer. The move reunites Alicia with KXAN-TV ND MICHAEL FABAC. They held similar roles when both worked at KLRT-TV in Little Rock.  Alicia has also worked in Detroit, Hartford, and Cincinnati.

Former Los Angeles and Seattle News Director JOE BARNES has been named CEO of Digital 3000.  The company provides hands-on, practical consulting and training workshops to organizations and businesses primarily in the techniques of using and leveraging social and digital media to build relationships and revenue, and in the powerful techniques of digital storytelling. Joe’s been the Chief Marketing Officer of Girl Scouts of Western Washington.  You can reconnect with Joe by emailing him at: joe@digital3000.net.

Citing personal reasons, SHANNON HAMMEL is going to stay at KXAS-TV in Dallas/Ft. Worth as Managing Editor.   We told you last week she was headed to WMAQ-TV in Chicago as Assistant News Director.  Shannon’s also worked in Columbus, OH, and Lansing.

Gin

Congratulations to KTVU-TV Associate News Director JANICE GIN who’s being inducted into the Silver Circle of the Northern California NATAS chapter.  Honorees have worked for 25 years or longer in broadcasting with half that time in the San Francisco market.  In addition to KTVU, Janice has worked at KGO-TV in San Francisco and KTXL-TV in Sacramento.  She’s also a Director at Large for RTDNA.
