April 28, 2012

Greetings:

Can it be?

NO new news director openings and FIVE newly named NDs! (I can just hear some GMs saying “The May book starts WHEN?” OMG!)

TWO of those newly filled ND jobs are in California (including one just announced late today) and TWO are in Texas.

Those changes leave our count of open ND positions to 26.

And there are actually more ND openings than that as we have TWO blind box ads this week, as well as new ads for an EP in Orlando and an Assistant ND in North Carolina. And we’re repeating an ad for an EP for a Virginia station.

We have obituaries for two long-ago news managers who went on to work for politicians (one for a Vice-President!) and lots of Names in the News, including a new job for veteran ND JACQUES NATZ, retirements for TWO longtime news managers, a few items about news managers on the move, and an honor for a Mississippi newsman who helped break the color barrier in that state.

All that and more after this week’s changes:

New News Director Openings:

None that I know of. Please let me know if you know of any changes…just send an email to me at: rick@rickgevers.com

Newly Named News Directors:

Parra

KXTV, Sacramento, CA…JEROME PARRA was named ND here this afternoon. It’s a return to Sacramento and KXTV for Jerome, who began his career as a writer and assignment editor there in 1990. He’s currently the Assistant News Director for another Gannett station, KPNX-TV in Phoenix. Jerome’s also been an ND in Flagstaff and has worked on the assignment desk for another Phoenix station. He replaces TIM GERAGHTY who left this ABC affiliate earlier this year to become Senior Director of News and Station Manager for Central Florida News 13. Tim was ND here for almost three years.

Carr

KFSN-TV, Fresno, CA…MICHAEL CARR has been promoted to news director for this ABC o-and-o. Mike started here 13 years ago as the weekend assignment editor. He later became a producer and most recently has been the executive producer. He served as the acting news director since TRACEY WATKOWSKI left the station in March after 5+ years as ND to return to another ABC o-and-o, KGO-TV in San Francisco, as ND.

KVII-TV, Amarillo, TX…RYAN HAZELWOOD will be the next ND for this ABC affiliate owned by Barrington Broadcasting. Ryan is currently an instructor and broadcast engineer at West Texas A & M University. He’s previously worked at KVII as a photojournalist, and has also worked in Austin. Ryan replaces STEVE PAIR who left the station last August after three years as ND for a job outside of TV.

Crespo

KTEN-TV, Denison, TX…TOM CRESPO moves across the market to become ND and anchor for this NBC affiliate. He’s been working as the anchor for KXII-TV, and follows former KXII ND ANTHONY MAISEL to KTEN, where Anthony is now the General Manager. Tom and Anthony also worked together when Anthony was ND for KDAF-TV in Dallas. Tom’s also worked in Jacksonville, FL, Meridian, MS, Tallahassee, FL, and Augusta, GA. If my records are correct, he replaces MARK FARRELL who was named ND for this Lockwood Broadcasting station in February, 2011.

WBBJ-TV, Jackson, TN…KEITH BAKER returns to Jackson as ND for this Bahakel Communications owned ABC affiliate. Keith’s parents are from Jackson and his grandmother’s house is across the street from the station. He’s currently the Assistant ND for WCTI-TV in New Bern, NC, which is now looking for his replacement (see ad below). Keith has also worked in Tampa and Pittsburgh. He replaces ROBERT DAVIDSON who left the station to return to Mississippi as ND for WCBI-TV in Columbus, MS, after more than two years as ND.

MANAGING EDITOR:

KXTV, Sacramento, CA (relisted this week)

ASSIGNMENT MANAGER:

WTMJ-TV, Milwaukee, WI (listed 4/20/12)

Obituaries:

We have two obituaries of former news managers this week. Ironically, both left TV news for jobs working for politicians, in one case a Vice-President:

JOHN SURRICK died April 6th. He was 84 and died of complications from brain surgery. John worked for WJZ-TV in Baltimore and was the Assistant News Director for WMAR-TV there before taking a job with then-Maryland Governor SPIRO AGNEW. He continued to work for Agnew when Agnew was Vice-President. Among his survivors is a son, JOHN SURRICK, who I believe worked for WBAL-TV in Baltimore for 12 years. The Washington Post story is here and John’s obituary is here.

Connaughton

KEN CONNAUGHTON died of cancer on April 18th at the age of 70. He worked as an executive producer for KTVX-TV in Salt Lake City, and later for a station in Texas. Ken also served as a spokesman for the Mayor of Salt Lake City and dealt with the bribery scandals around the Salt Lake City Olympics.. The Salt Lake City Tribune reports on his life here, and an obituary he wrote himself is here.

Names in the News:

Natz

Veteran news director JACQUES NATZ is joining SmithGeiger as a Senior Vice President and Senior Consultant. For the last five years, Jacques has been the Director of Media Content for Hearst. He’s been a news director in Indianapolis, Seattle, and Boston, and has worked in Chicago, Detroit, Sacramento, and Columbia, MO. He’ll continue to live in New York City and will begin work at SmithGeiger on July 1st.

Throndsen

A man who worked for Jacques in Seattle is also retiring. BOB THRONDSEN has spent 34 of his 43 years in the business working for KOMO-TV and radio there, as an anchor, reporter, managing editor and, most recently, news director for KOMO Radio. He also worked for another Seattle TV station, and for stations in Portland, OR, and Philadelphia. Take a few minutes to enjoy this very well done story on Bob from the KOMO website.

Howell

One time news director and longtime anchor BOB HOWELL is retiring from WSFA-TV in Montgomery. Bob spent more than 30 years anchoring for this Raycom-owned NBC affiliate in two stints there. He was lured across the street in the late 90’s to anchor for a competitor but later returned to WSFA in 2004. He also worked in Dothan, AL, earlier in his career. He’ll officially retire at the end of May.

WLWT-TV in Cincinnati has named JON CARLISLE Morning Executive Producer for this NBC affiliate. Jon comes from sister-Hearst-station WESH-TV in Orlando where he’s been the morning producer for the last five years. He previously worked in Ft. Smith, AR.

DAVID SEALS has been promoted to Assistant News Director at Sinclair’s WZTV in Nashville. He had been the EP there and had spent many years working for WAVY-TV in Norfolk. David’s also worked in Syracuse. Hartford/New Haven, and Albany, NY.

There’s a new Assistant News Director at LIN Media’s WDTN-TV in Dayton as PETER SPECIALE joins this NBC affiliate. He most recently spent seven months as ND for WREX-TV in Rockford, IL before leaving the station last month. Peter’s also been an ND in Gainesville, Fl, Burlington, VT, and Youngstown, and has also worked in Dayton, Cleveland, Hartford, and Oklahoma City among others.

Collins

The Mississippi Associated Press Broadcasters honored old friend CORRICE COLLINS last Saturday night with a Pioneer of Television Award for helping break the color barrier in Mississippi television. Corrice was the first black reporter and anchor for WLBT-TV in Jackson in 1967. He returned to the station later in his career as the Assistant News Director/Assignment Editor. Corrice left Jackson in 1973 to attend the University of Missouri where we worked together. He later worked in Wichita, Kansas City, and Chicago. There’s a poorly shot (I can say that, I shot it!) iPhone video of some of the ceremony here.

April 20, 2012

Greetings:

It was great to see some of you at NAB this week: I hope to see more of you at other conventions this summer and at RTDNA in Florida in September.

There’s ONE new ND opening this week: it’s in a top 20 market and we first told you about it yesterday in an UPDATE.

When we first published the newsletter last week, we didn’t know what had happened to one ND whose station was advertising his job.  But we were able to update that quickly thanks to an emailed tip from a loyal reader.  But we’re including that information again for all as a Newly Named ND.

Those changes leave our count of open ND positions to 30.

We have ads this week for TWO of those ND openings…in Knoxville and Springfield, MO, as well as an ad for an EP in a beautiful part of Virginia and another for a Senior Producer for a top five network owned stations.

We’ve done (he said, modestly) a nice job of freshening our list of Other News Management Openings, and in Names in the News there are several items about new jobs for some news managers.

All that and more after this week’s changes:

New News Director Opening:

Andolsen

WKYC-TV, Cleveland, OH…RITA ANDOLSEN is moving to a new job for this Gannett-owned NBC affiliate. She’s been named Director of Advocacy & Community Initiatives, and will oversee the station’s efforts in community outreach, creative local programming, and special events. Rita’s been ND here for five years, and spent seven years as the Assistant ND there before that. She previously worked for Cleveland’s WJW-TV as a producer.

New News Director:

WCBI-TV, Columbus, MS…ROBERT DAVIDSON returns to the market as ND for this Morris Multimedia owned by CBS. We told you last week that Robert was leaving his job as ND for WBBJ-TV in Jackson, TN, but when we first published we didn’t know he was coming here. At WCBI, he replaces RUSS GELLER who is leaving to return to Memphis as an EP for WHBQ-TV. Russ was ND here for five years.

April 14, 2012

Thursday, April 19, 2012 UPDATE:

There’s a news director change in a top 20 market to tell you about this afternoon.

Andolsen

RITA ANDOLSEN, who’s been ND for Gannett’s WKYC-TV in Cleveland for the last five years, will take on a new role at this NBC affiliate, with the title of Director of Advocacy & Community Initiatives. She’ll oversee the station’s enhanced efforts in community outreach, creative local programming, andsuccessful special events. More details in this story from the WKYC website.

Rita has worked for WKYC for 12 years, first as Assistant ND before being promoted to ND in 2007. She previously worked for WJW-TV in Cleveland for four years as a producer. The search for her replacement is underway.

As always, all the week’s developments in our regular newsletter. I hope to publish tomorrow but may be delayed by travel.

**** ***** ****

(Saturday morning 4/15/12 update.)  We updated this edition to include new information on ROBERT DAVIDSON, the ND at WBBJ-TV in Jackson, TN.  Our earlier report had him leaving the station but not knowing where he is going.  We now know that he’s returning to Mississippi.  More below.)

Greetings:

We have news of a start-up news operation in Missouri this week…it’s been a while since we’ve seen one of those. That’s one of TWO new news director openings, while THREE stations have new faces running the news department.

Those changes leave our count of open ND positions to 28.

We have paid help wanted ads for FOUR of those ND openings, in Knoxville, Omaha, Bluefield, and the afore-mentioned Missouri startup. And we have an ad for a Senior Producer at an o-and-o in a top five market.

A social note: If you’re attending NAB in Las Vegas this week, RTDNA is organizing a get-together Tuesday night following its day of programming at the convention. The gathering is scheduled for 9:00 PM in the Parasol Down bar at the Wynn Hotel and Casino. It’s been the site of similar gatherings at recent conventions, and a great opportunity to see other news people. I plan to attend and hope to see you there.

This week, we’ve turned the Names in the News section into Awards in the News, as two more organizations announced award winners. (And I didn’t have any Names in the News, so it’s time for a reminder to send me items.)

All that and more after this week’s changes:

April 8, 2012

Greetings:

For the second consecutive week, we have  TWO  new news director openings,  THREE  newly named NDs, and a lot of items in our Names in the News section. Both of the new ND openings are created because the incumbents are taking news management positions in larger markets.

Those changes lower our count of open ND positions to 29.

TWO of those open ND jobs are featured in paid help wanted ads below, along with an ad for a morning EP position in Indianapolis.

We also welcome a new advertiser this week, DSI RF, which is introducing NewsShark, live ENG Video via 3G, 4G or Wi-Fi. They also provide other services…be sure to check out their ad below and their booth at NAB. Beat the Traffic also returns as an advertiser…they’ll also be at NAB, and CGS Automation and Devlin Design Group are advertising this week as well. We appreciate their support.

In Names in the News, some very prestigious awards were announced this week, a long ago San Diego ND returns to a newsroom…at least for a while, and we have several other items about news managers on the move.

All that and more after this week’s changes:

New News Director Openings:

Geller

WCBI-TV, Columbus, MS…RUSS GELLER is leaving to become an EP for WHBQ-TV in Memphis. It’s a return to Memphis (and WHBQ) for Russ who produced there from 1983-90. He’s also worked in Macon, GA, and for two stations in Chattanooga. Russ also worked in Louisville as a consultant and talent coach. Russ spent more than five years as ND for this CBS affiliate which is owned by Morris Multimedia.

KAAL-TV, Austin, MN…MIKE SCHRAM is also leaving to take a management job in a larger market. Mike’s joining WISH-TV in Indianapolis as the morning executive producer. He’s been the ND for this Hubbard Broadcasting owned ABC affiliate for almost five years. He previously worked for WLNS-TV in Lansing and WJRT-TV in Flint.

Newly Named News Directors:

KITV, Honolulu, HI…CHUCK PARKER has been promoted to ND for this Hearst-owned ABC affiliate. He’s been the interim ND since GENIE GARNER left the station in February after 3+ years as ND. Chuck joined the station in 2010 as Managing Editor. He’s a former ND at KHNL-TV in Honolulu, worked at two other Honolulu stations, and also was the deputy city editor for the Honolulu Star-Bulletin.

Osgood

KTAB/KRBC-TV, Abilene, TX…according to his LinkedIn page, KEVIN OSGOOD is now the ND for this Nextstar owned NBC/CBS duopoly. Kevin’s a former ND at WHNT-TV in Huntsville, and has also worked in Richmond and Tampa. He’s been out of the newsroom since 2005 working for several different companies, mostly in the set design field. He replaces AUSTIN KELLERMAN who left the station in February to become ND for sister-Nexstar station KARK-TV in Little Rock.

Benner

WCAV/WVAW-TV, Charlottesville, VA…GRIFF BENNER has been promoted to news director for this Gray Television owned CBS/ABC duopoly. Griff’s worked there since 2005 when he joined the staff as assistant news director. He’s also worked in Pocatello, Idaho Falls, Columbia, SC, and Harrisburg, PA. At WCAV, he replaces JIM HANCHETT who left the station in January after three years as ND for a job as Director of Marketing and Communications at Indiana University’s School of Public and Environmental Affairs.

Names in the News:

Some of the most prestigious awards in our industry were announced this week.

KTRK-TV in Houston, the ABC o-and-o there, was honored with the IRE Medal, the highest honor from Investigative Reporters and Editors. KQED-TV in San Francisco won the other Medal awarded, a rare year in which broadcasters won the only medals. WVUE-TV in New Orleans, ABC News, and CNN also received awards. You can see the complete list of winners by clicking here. The awards will be presented at the group’s annual conference in Boston this June. If you’ve not been, it’s well worth your time and I encourage you to attend.

Congratulations to four commercial TV stations who won Peabody awards this week. Honors went to KING-TV (Belo/NBC) in Seattle, KPHO-TV (Meredith/CBS) in Phoenix, WEWS-TV (Scripps/ABC) in Cleveland, and KLAS-TV (Landmark/CBS) in Las Vegas. ABC News and CBS News were also honored, as were CNN and PBS. You can read the Peabody Awards news release here, and see the complete list of winners here.

Kass

Former News Director IRV KASS is back in a newsroom, at least temporarily. He’s been named the interim ND for XETV in San Diego, where he’s lived for 22 years. For some of that time, of course, Irv was ND for KNSD-TV. Since leaving KNSD, Irv’s been working with a range of not for profits, over the last few years, helping out with strategic planning and leadership/board relations. Irv tells me he is not a candidate to be the next ND for XETV.

Two management moves at KTVX-TV in Salt Lake City. LEESA DILLON, a former ND in Cleveland and for News 12 the Bronx has been promoted to Assistant News Director here. She had been the Nightside EP. ROB TOMKINS has been promoted to fill her role as the Nightside EP.

Cates

WSPA/WYCW-TV (CBS/CW in Spartansburg/Greenville/Asheville) has promoted News Director DAN CATES to become Director of Digital Content. He’ll oversee all news and non-paid programming content for WSPA and WYCW and all related digital content platforms. He’ll also manage marketing for those areas. Dan’s been ND here since 2009, spent the ten years before that as ND for sister-Media General station WKRG-TV in Mobile, and has also worked in Birmingham and Tuscaloosa.
