September 30, 2012

Greetings:

We have TWO newly opened ND jobs in this edition, with NO new openings. Our complete list grows to 31 stations with open ND jobs.

Some clarifications and updates on earlier items. Last week we told you that CHUCK MAULDEN was leaving KTHV in Little Rock after five years as ND. We’ve since learned he resigned and will be at the station until the end of October. And in reporting BOB WALTERS‘ hire at KNOE-TV in Monroe, LA, we were unclear in explaining his tenure in Evansville. He’d been ND at WTVW-TV for 12 years, and ND for the duopoly (WTVW & WEHT-TV) for one year.

We have ONE new ad this week, that a Blind Box ad for an ND opening at a small market NBC affiliate. And we’re re-running a number of ads from last week’s newsletter.

We’ll tell you about a number management moves in Names in the News, and we have two obituaries, including one you wouldn’t expect to see in a publication targeted to news of news managers.

New News Director Openings:

Remington

KTVK-TV, Phoenix, AZ…we told you earlier this week that BRAD REMINGTON announced his departure from this Belo-owned independent station. Brad will remain at the station and help with the transition while the company looks for his replacement. He’ll return to Denver, where his wife is a principal at a private school. They’ve done the commuter thing for the four years he’s been ND here. He previously has been an ND for KDVR-TV in Denver, KTVI-TV in St. Louis, and KOB-TV in Albuquerque, and had earlier worked in Denver.

Owen

WLWT-TV, Cincinnati, OH…STACY OWEN is returning to California to be the Assistant ND for KNBC-TV in Los Angeles. Stacy’s from California…in fact her Mom lives in LA. She (Stacy, not her mom!) has been ND for this Hearst-owned NBC affiliate for the last three years. She spent three years as ND for KXTV in Sacramento, and worked for KRON-TV in San Francisco for 14 years, including three as ND.

Obituaries:

Our sympathy to KVVU-TV (Las Vegas) Morning Executive Producer JUDY GREENE on the death of her fiancee, HERBIE GOFORTH. Herbie, a lineman for NV Energy, died this week when he fell from a utility tower. He died Tuesday, the day before his 30th birthday and about a week before his scheduled marriage to Judy.

CHRIS ECONOMAKI also died this week. He wasn’t a TV news manager or executive, though you may know him from his work as an announcer on auto races for more than 40 years. Chris got his first TV gig in the 60’s because NASCAR was unhappy with the announcer of its previous telecast, a guy named WALTER CRONKITE. He also published National Speed Sport News and wrote a weekly column which was a must read for anyone who followed auto racing. I was a long time subscriber and fan of that column, and elements of his style have found their way into this newsletter (hence the tribute). He was a terrific reporter, a tireless worker and an unparalleled storyteller. His now silent typewriter holds a well deserved place of honor in the media room at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Names in the News:

JEFF ORCUTT has been promoted to Morning EP at KMSP-TV, the FOX o-and-o in Minneapolis. He has been a producer there.

TIM MAESTAS is the new EP at KRQE-TV, the LIN owned station in Albuquerque. He’s been the weekend anchor and has worked at this CBS affiliate since 1999.

ROB MACHADO has been named Content Manager for WHAM-TV in Rochester, NY. He most recently worked for KITV in Honolulu for three years. He’s also worked in St. Louis, Orlando, Raleigh, Tampa, two stations in Miami, Columbus, GA, and for the Weather Channel in Atlanta.

KEVIN FRIES has been named Assistant ND for WBRZ-TV in Baton Rouge. He’s been working at Central Florida News 13, and has previously worked in Mobile, Montgomery, and Lexington.

Wednesday, September 26, 2012 UPDATE:

Due to travel, we’re a little tardy posting two UPDATES that we emailed earlier this afternoon.

Remington

In Phoenix, KTVK-TV News Director BRAD REMINGTON announced his resignation this morning.  He’ll leave the station after the elections and by the end of the year.  Brad told me it’s primarily a family decision.  He plans to return to Denver, where is wife is a principal at a private school.  They’ve been doing the commuter thing for the four years that Brad’s been ND for this Belo-owned independent station.  He’s previously been an ND  in Denver (KDVR-TV), St. Louis (KTVI-TV), and Albuquerque (KOB-TV), and earlier worked for another station in Denver.

Owen

In Cincinnati, WLWT-TV ND STACY OWEN is leaving to return to California as Assistant ND for KNBC-TV in Los Angeles.  Stacy’s been ND for this Hearst owned NBC affiliate for the past three years.  But she spent most of her career in California, including 14 years in a variety of roles at KRON-TV in San Francisco, three as ND.  And she was ND at KXTV in Sacramento for three years.

Greetings:

It was nice to see some of you at RTDNA this week. Kudos to Scripps, SJL and (apologies to those I’ve missed) other companies who sent all their NDs to the conference.

We have TWO newly named NDs in this week’s report, with FOUR new openings. Our complete list thus shows 29 stations with open ND jobs.

The demand for non ND news managers continues with SIX new ads for Ass’t. NDs and EPs in a wide range of market sizes. We even have a producer opening at the Weather Channel. along with a rare blind box ad for a Creative Services Director. (Help a friend and pass that information along to them.)

No taker again this week on our free Situation Wanted listing. If you’re looking for a new job, check out how you can participate below. In Names in the News, some management addition at a San Diego station, and TWO GM moves, including one involving a former news director.

New News Director Openings:

WWSB-TV, Sarasota, FL…GENE ROSS has left this Calkins Media owned ABC affiliate after more than two years as ND. Gene’s a former ND in Las Vegas, Jacksonville, FL, Fresno, Bakersfield and Albany, NY. His departure comes shortly after a new GM joined WWSB.

KTHV-TV, Little Rock, AR…CHUCK MAULDEN is leaving this Gannett owned CBS station after almost five years as ND.  Chuck will be at the station until the end of October.  He previously had been the News Operations Manager at Gannett’s KSDK-TV in St. Louis. He began his career as a photojournalist in Jonesboro, AR, and also worked as a photographer in Little Rock and Birmingham.

He began his career as a production assistant at WGAL-TV in Lancaster. He replaces CHRIS HOLDEN who left in June (after 3 1/2 years as ND) for a job with Magic Dust TV in Phoenix.

KOAA-TV, Colorado Springs, CO…it was announced Friday that DAVID RANDALL will start Tuesday as the new ND for this Cordillera Broadcasting owned NBC affiliate. He’s been a news manager in Corpus Christi and El Paso. He replaces MICHAEL LANGLEY whose last day at the station was Friday. He was ND there for 11 months.

Picken

September 14, 2012

Greetings:

Welcome to your pre-RTDNA conference report on news director and news management changes.

This week, we have THREE newly named NDs, with NO new openings. That means we now have 31 stations listed (our full list is below) with open ND jobs.

We do have TWO new ads, one for an Assistant ND/EP in the Northeast, and a rare blind box ad for a Creative Services Director. (You may know of someone who’d be a good fit for that…pass the information along and help a friend.)

Lots of GM changes this week, including THREE today at CBS owned stations, one involving a well known former ND. That’s below, in our Names in the News segment. And we’ve lots of activity in our list of Other News Management Openings.

Finally, I hope to see many of you at the RTDNA convention next week in Ft. Lauderdale. Thanks to Dan Devlin who’s sponsoring the annual gathering of the Missouri Mafia on Thursday. Sounds like a heckuva party, with a Hawaii 5-0 theme, and will be held in the cabana area at the Marriott. You will need a ticket to attend. You can get one for free from Dan (see his ad below for information on his convention plans) or from any of the Missouri faculty you see at the conference.

New News Director Openings:

None that I know about. If you know of one, please share! rick@rickgevers.com

Newly Named News Directors:

WPBF-TV, Palm Beach Gardens, FL…PAIGE HARRISON will be the next ND for the Hearst owned ABC affiliate. She’s a longtime Hearst news manager who most recently has been the Assistant ND for the company’s Pittsburgh station, WTAE-TV. She’s also worked for Hearst stations in Orlando and Oklahoma City. At WPBF, she replaces KYLE GRIMES who is being promoted to GM of Hearst’s WPTZ/WNNE in Plattsburgh, NY-Burlington, VT.

KVLY/KXJB-TV, Fargo, ND…IKE WALKER is joining this Hoak Media owned duoply as its next ND. Ike most recently was Director of Digital Content (aka News Director) for WCMH-TV in Columbus. He’s also been an ND in Topeka and has worked in Tulsa and Savannah, GA. He’s replacing GRIFF POTTER at this NBC/CBS duopoly. We told you last week that Griff was leaving for a job to be announced soon.

KLDO-TV, Laredo, TX…WILLIAM ECHEVERRIA has been named ND for this Entravision owned station. He replaces CARLOS SANCHEZ.

September 10, 2012

Greetings:

I don’t know HARRY A. JESSELL. I’m pretty sure we’ve never met. But I sure liked his column this week on TVNewsCheck.com.

If you haven’t read it, you should. Just click here.

And once you read it, if you’re in a position to take some action, (and most of you are), follow his suggestions and do something. Perhaps I’ll see you in Ft. Lauderdale.

Now on to our normal business.

There are FOUR new news director openings this week, all in medium and smaller markets. And TWO stations received new NDs since our last report.

Our count of open ND jobs increases to 33.

We have SIX help wanted ads this week, including ONE for one of this week’s new openings.

Just a handful of new news management moves in our Names in the News section. There’s one obituary this week…for the wife of a longtime Texas newsman, news director, and educator.

And a veteran news director in featured in our free Situations Wanted segment, though he’s not looking for a full-time position.

All this…and much more…below.

New News Director Openings:

Sanders

WCTV, Tallahassee, FL…TRISTON SANDERS has left this Gray TV owned CBS affiliate to become the Assistant ND for WWL-TV in New Orleans, LA. She’s been ND there for just over two years and had served as the EP before that. She first joined the station as an anchor/reporter, had worked for WINK-TV in Ft. Myers, and had interned for WCTV while attending Florida State University.

Potter

KVLY/KXJB-TV, Fargo, ND…GRIFF POTTER is leaving this Hoak Media NBC/CBS duopoly. Griff tells me he has a new job in the Midwest, closer to family there. He’s been here for just over two years and has also been an ND in Paducah, KY, and Quad Cities, IL, an assistant ND in Milwaukee, and an EP or producer in Nashville, Cincinnati, Grand Rapids, Detroit, Kansas City, Toledo and Huntsville, AL.

WTVO/WQRF-TV, Rockford, IL…after five years as ND for this ABC-Fox duopoly, KENT HARRELL is being promoted within Nexstar. He’ll be the next ND for WFRV-TV in Green Bay, WI. More on that below, and learn more about this opportunity in the paid help wanted ad below.

KFBB-TV, Great Falls, MT…this Max Media owned ABC affiliate has a posting on its website for a news director opening. My records show DAN CLOUSE was named ND there in June, 2011.

Newly Named News Directors:

WFTS-TV, Tampa, FL…we first reported this move in an UPDATE earlier this week. BILL McFARLAND has been named ND for this Scripps-owned ABC affiliate.  Bill is currently the Assistant ND for WABC-TV in New York. He’s also worked in Philadelphia, Washington, DC, and Hartford. He replaces DOUG CULVER who left the station in June to become ND for WJLA-TV in Washington.

Harrell

WFRV-TV, Green Bay, WI…as noted above, KENT HARRELL will be the next ND for this Nexstar owned CBS affiliate. In addition to his five years as ND in Rockford, Kent’s been an ND in Corpus Christi and for Bay News 9 in Tampa. He’s also worked in Dallas and Memphis. At WFRV, he’ll replace CARMELYN DALEY-HINKENS who left the station in July after one year as ND to become the Assistant ND/News Content Manager for WITI-TV in Milwaukee.
