Thursday, May 30, 2013 UPDATE:

Dallman

Congratulations to longtime news director BILL DALLMAN who’s been named VP/News Director for Fox Sports 1, the new sports network which will debut this summer. In his new role, Bill will oversee news gathering and format for the net’s three hour nightly show.

Bill’s been the ND for Fox’s KMSP/WFTC-TV in Minneapolis for the last seven years. He was the startup ND for Fox’s KDVR-TV in Denver, and also worked as the ND for WZZM-TV in Grand Rapids. He’s also worked in Sacramento, Austin, MN, and for another Minneapolis station earlier in his career.

He’ll be based in Los Angeles for his new job.

More on this story and all the latest news in our full report later this week.

**** ***** ****

Greetings:

Welcome to your Memorial Day edition of your free weekly newsletter covering news director and news management changes.

This week’s report finds TWO new ND openings and THREE newly named NDs this week, leaving our list of open ND jobs at 20.

NOT included in that list of ND openings is the departure announced this week from CBS NewsPath of BILL MONDORA, whose title is ND there. More on that in our Names in the News section below.

Also in that section, you’ll also find the long-rumored-and-finally-official news of a new President of NBC News, details on a former Indianapolis News Director who has a new job, and a new GM for a large market Hearst station.

All that and more below!

New News Director Opening:

WXMI-TV, Grand Rapids, MI…we told you earlier this week that KERRI CAVANAUGH is leaving one Tribune-owned FOX affiliate for another. She’s been named ND for WXIN-TV in Indianapolis. She’s been the ND here for three years.

KRCG-TV, Jefferson City/Columbia, MO…JOHN SHELBY is leaving this CBS affiliate. John tells me he’s looking for opportunities closer to home. He’s been the ND here since January, 2012, and has previously been an ND in Buffalo, Green Bay, Cedar Rapids/Waterloo, Lansing, Sioux Falls, and Pasco, WA. He’s also worked in Chicago, St. Louis, and Columbus, OH. Barrington Broadcasting currently owns KRCG but is selling it (and their other station) to Sinclair.

Careful readers of this newsletter have known for more than a week that there are two ND openings in San Antonio. The local TV critic discovered that earlier this week.

Newly Named News Directors:

KSTS-TV, San Jose/San Francisco, CA…JUAN MIGUEL MUNIZ has been named ND for this Telemundo affiliate which is co-located with NBC’s KNTV there. Juan has been the ND for WKAQ-TV in San Juan, PR.

Mondora

WXIN-TV, Indianapolis, IN…as noted above, KERRI CAVANAUGH will be the next news director for this Tribune-owned FOX affiliate. In addition to three years as ND in Grand Rapids, she was the ND for a Tribune owned station in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, and has also worked in Tampa, West Palm Beach, FL and Tuscaloosa, AL. She replaces LEE ROSENTHAL who left last month to become news director for KTVU-TV in Oakland/San Francisco, CA after four years at WXIN.

KTVA-TV, Anchorage, AL…BERT RUDMAN will be the next ND for this CBS affiliate once the new owners (Denali Media) take over. Bert’s currently a producer for ABC in Los Angeles. STACI FEGER has been the ND here for almost nine years and will remain the ND during the ownership transfer and may stay at the station afterwards. BTW, the ownership transfer here is interesting and recently caught the attention of the New York Times.

Kerri’s also been the ND for Tribune’s WSFL-TV in Ft. Lauderdale, and has worked in Tampa, West Palm Beach, and Tuscaloosa, AL.

At WXIN, she replaces LEE ROSENTHAL, who left the station last month to become ND for KTVU-TV, the Cox-owned FOX affiliate in Oakland/San Francisco, CA.

Greetings:

There are TWO new ND openings this week, and, to the best of my knowledge, NO newly named news directors in our report.

That leaves our count of open news director positions at 20. One of those open ND jobs is featured in an ad below

There are lots of jobs in Texas it appears. TWO of those 20 open ND jobs are in San Antonio, and this week we have new paid ads for management openings in Dallas.

In Names in the News, a former ND lands a job with an unusual title, the West’s first black anchorwoman will be honored by RTDNA, a GM promotion within Hearst, and two GM’s in Buffalo announce their departures in the same week.

All that, and more, after this week’s changes:

New News Director Opening:

Davis

KENS-TV, San Antonio, TX…as we reported earlier this week, KURT DAVIS has been named VP, News Services for CBS News. Kurt joined KENS, a Belo-owned CBS affiliate, in the summer of 2003. He’s also been a news director in New Orleans and Lynchburg, VA, and has worked in Dallas, Atlanta, Baton Rouge, and Little Rock, AR. CBS says Kurt will lead CBS News’ satellite newsgathering organization. JOHN FRAZEE, currently the Senior VP, News Services for CBS, will leave the network later this year, take some time off, and then look for other opportunities.

We noted in our mid-week UPDATE that this moves creates the second ND opening in San Antonio. WOAI’s TOM BELL is leaving at the end of May to become ND for KOVR/KMAX-TV in Sacramento, a CBS owned duopoly.

McClanahan

WTWO-TV, Terre Haute, IN…TOM McCLAHAN is stepping down as news director but will continue to anchor for this Nexstar owned NBC affiliate. He’s been at the station for more than 40 years in a wide variety of roles. You can learn more about this opportunity in the paid ad below.

May 11, 2013

Thursday, May 16, 2013 UPDATE:

A longtime Belo News Director heads off to New York for a job with the network.

Davis

KURT DAVIS, who’s been the ND for KENS-TV in San Antonio for ten years, has been named Vice-President, News Services, for CBS News. The release from CBS says he will “lead CBS News’ satellite newsgathering organization, which provides news and information to 200 CBS affiliates as well as to broadcasters around the world.”

JOHN FRAZEE, currently the Senior VP, News Services for CBS, will leave the network later this year, take some time off for a long vacation, and then pursue other opportunities.

Kurt joined KENS, a CBS affiliate, in the summer of 2003. He’s also been a news director in New Orleans and Lynchburg, VA, and has worked in Dallas, Atlanta, Baton Rouge, and Little Rock, AR.

That means there are now two ND openings in San Antonio, where the search is also on to replace TOM BELL, who will leave WOAI-TV at the end of the book to become ND for KOVR/KMAX in Sacramento.

More on this…and all the week’s news, in our full newsletter later this week.

Monday, May 13, 2013 UPDATE:

This obituary for former KRIV-TV and WDSU-TV producer KATHRYN GREER FAEGIN ran today in The Houston Chronicle.  We reported on her apparent murder below.

**** ***** ****

Greetings:

We have lots to report this week, including FOUR new news directors and ONE new ND opening.

That brings our count of open ND positions around the country to 18.

We have ads for eight positions around the country, including new ones for an EP in Washington DC and a small market Assistant ND opportunity in the midwest.

We have two obituaries, including one for a former Houston and New Orleans producer who police believe was murdered, and the other for the father of a former news manager who spent 42 years at Ad Age.

And we have some interesting items in Names in the News, including:

  • A possible new president for NBC News, which cancelled a newsmagazine today.
  • A former New York City ND is leaving CNN.
  • This year’s Paul White Award Winner follows in his father’s footsteps.
  • A former ND is promoted to VP/News for her current company
  • And a new GM for an NBC o-and-o.

All that and more after this week’s changes.

New News Director Opening:

KTUL-TV, Tulsa, OK…CARLTON HOUSTON is leaving this ABC affiliate to become ND for KFOR-TV in Oklahoma City. More on that below.

Newly Named News Directors:

KFOR-TV, Oklahoma City, OK…CARLTON HOUSTON joins this LocalTV owned NBC affiliate from KTUL-TV, the Albritton-owned ABC affiliate in Tulsa. Ironically, both groups are for sale. Carlton’s been the ND for KTUL for six years. He began his career on the air before moving into management, and has worked in Tampa, Kansas City, Norfolk, Jackson, MS, and Columbia, MO. At KFOR, he replaces MARY ANN ECKSTEIN who left the station in January after 33 years. Carlton also becomes the second Tulsa ND to move to Oklahoma City, following TODD SPESSARD who joined KWTV two years ago. Both are Missouri grads and are now competing against each other for the third time, having also once worked for different stations in Kansas City.

KCAU-TV, Sioux City, IA…JACK BROOKS has been promoted to ND for this Citadel Communications owned ABC affiliate. He’s worked for the station for five years as Assistant ND, Assignment Editor, and as a producer. He replaces CARLA KREEGAR who left the station in March after seven years as ND.

WTVY-TV, Dothan, AL…KIM ALLEN has been promoted from sports director to news director at the Gray TV owned ABC station. He also spent eleven years as the sports director at WDHN-TV in Dothan. Kim replaces JEFF RAKER who died suddenly last February.

KLDO-TV, Laredo, TX…DIANE CASTILLO assumes additional duties as ND for this Entravision owned station. She is also the ND for KXOF-TV, the FOX affiliate which is co-located. She replaces WILLIAM ECHEVERRIA who, according to my records, became ND there last September.

Turness

Both the New York Times and the Los Angeles Times are reporting that DEBORAH TURNESS will be the next President of NBC News. She’s currently the editor (similar to the president’s job) of Britain’s ITV News. It’s possible the announcement could come as soon as Monday. She would be the first female network news president.

If she gets the job, she won’t have to worry about the struggling NBC magazine program, Rock Center. It was cancelled today. The last show is expected to run in June.

TVNewser reports that one-time New York City (WABC-TV) News Director BART FEDER is leaving CNN, where he’s been the Senior VP of Current Programming since 2008.

Fox News anchor and correspondent CHRIS WALLACE will be given RTDNA’s Paul White Award at this year’s convention in Anaheim. His father, the late MIKE WALLACE, was similarly honored in 1991, making them the first father and son winners.

Former Atlanta (WSB-TV) News Director MARIAN PITTMAN has been named VP/News and Marketing for Cox Media Group’s TV stations. Marian is currently Station Manager for WSB. She’s worked for four different Cox stations during her career. Her promotion is one of several announced today by the company.

GM Notes:

Former Cleveland (WEWS-TV) GM RIC HARRIS has been promoted to GM for NBC’s WVIT-TV in Hartford. He’s been Director of Sales there since March. After leaving WEWS in 2005, Ric was the GM for digital media and strategic marketing for the NBC owned stations for two years.

Nexstar has named RICHARD ENGBERG GM for WMBD-TV in Peoria. He’s been VP/Director of Sales for Univision stations in Arizona.

Greetings:

We’re a little delayed this week, but not because of a lot of  ND openings.

For one of the few times in the 17+ years of this weekly effort, we have no news director changes this week. That means, of course, that our count of open ND jobs remains at a lower-than-normal 18.

But there are plenty of reasons for you to read on.

If you’re looking for a new opportunity, we have EIGHT help wanted ads. And we’ve freshened up our list of Other News Management Openings.

And in Names in the News, a number of news managers on the move, a one-time news directors returns to TV as a GM in California, and the retirements of two longtime industry veterans whose names you may know.

Find all of that below!

J. WARREN HOCKADAY, a former ND in Eureka, CA, has been named GM of a different Eureka station, KIEM-TV. It’s a return to TV for Warren, who’s spent the last 14 years as President and CEO of the Eureka Chamber of Commerce.

Two notable retirements this week.

Graham

FRANK GRAHAM, a former news director and longtime consultant, made his last station visit last week. Frank’s a former news director in Baltimore, news manager in Pittsburgh, Dayton, and Rockford. He served for many years as President of McHugh-Hoffman and founded Convergent Communications Consultants, Inc. (aka C3) 13 years ago. Frank tells me he and his wife Carol plan to concentrate on grandchildren, international travel, church and charitable activities. Your note of congratulations can be sent to him at: frank@c-cube.net.

Papper

And BOB PAPPER, who you may know for his longtime supervision of the RTDNA Annual Surveys, is retiring…at least from active University work. He’ll continue to oversee the RTDNA/Hofstra University Annual Surveys in conjunction with Hofstra, where he’ll be Professor Emeritus. Here’s the link to Bob’s bio which covers both his previous University stops as well as markets in which he worked. He and his wife Carole are moving to Las Vegas, where your email will find him at: bob.papper@hofstra.edu
