Monday, September 29, 2025 UPDATE:

Greetings:

Did someone, perhaps your Mom or a teacher, ever tell you “Haste makes Waste?”

Last night’s newsletter proves that point. I got a late start and in an attempt to get back on schedule, I screwed one item up substantially, and missed another that should have been included. But as a Monday morning bonus, I’ll toss in a new item from, of all places, Awful Announcing, predominately a sports site.

Ginther

The item I screwed up? The move of MARK GINTHER to be ND at WDBJ-TV in Roanoke, VA.

I told you that WDBJ was owned by Graham. Wrong! It is owned by Gray Media.

I told you that he was replacing SCOTT FLANNIGAN. Also wrong! He’s replacing BRETT BONFLEUR who left to become the Assistant ND for Gray’s WFSB-TV in Hartford/New Haven CT.

Apologies.

The item I missed?

Turner

The obituary for former KSTP-TV (Minneapolis-St. Paul/ABC) news director and anchor STAN TURNER. He died last week at the age of 81 after a three year fight with cancer. In addition to this obituary, KSTP posted this tribute to him. He also worked for co-owned All News Channel.

And the bonus item? Awful Announcing points out that 60 Minutes has not posted to Twitter (aka X) since last February, stopping just two days after an exchange with ELON MUSK who called 60 Minutes the biggest liars in the world and that ‘they’ deserve a long prison sentence.

But the news magazine continues to post on many other social sites.

Thanks to those of you who wrote to point out the errors in the WDBJ/Ginther item, though I resent the one that compared me to a WNBA referee.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Greetings:

We have links to a number of stories with interesting angles on exactly what the short lived boycott (in some quarters) of the Jimmy Kimmel Show means.

That’s in Names in the News, along with a few other items,

There are TWO new news directors named this week, with ONE new opening. BOTH the new news directors are returning to the corner office, and ONE is a name familiar to many of you.

Our count of open ND jobs is now at 29.

Again, a number of interesting items in Names in the News, including yet another VP of Content for Tegna and a California station shutters its news department to run newscasts from a San Francisco station.

Also…the answer to the trivia question “What’s the smallest TV market?” may be changing.

And…as far as I know…no GM changes this week.

Newly Named News Directors:

Adkins

WCPO-TV, Cincinnati, OH…JON ADKINS stays in Ohio as he joins this Scripps owned ABC affiliate as News Director. GM JEFF BROGAN shared the news. Jon most recently was ND at Tegna’s WKYC-TV (NBC) in Cleveland, a job he left in March after less than two years, though he spent 17 years there. At WCPO, he replaces BARRY FULMER who left (also in March) to return to WDRB-TV (FOX) in Louisville. Barry was ND here for three years.

Ginther

WDBJ-TV, Roanoke, VA…MARK GINTHER returns to a newsroom as the ND for this Gray Media owned CBS affiliate. Mark’s spent the last 2 1/2 years as Senior VP of Strategy for SmithGeiger. Before that, he worked for four years as Director of News and Operations for Sinclair. He’s also been an ND in Seattle, Dallas, and Des Moines and worked in other places. Here, he replaces BRETT BONFLEUR who left a few weeks ago to become the Assistant ND for Gray’s WFSB-TV in Hartford/New Haven.

New News Director Openings:

Hums

WTHR-TV, Indianapolis, IN…SCOTT HUMS moves up the Tegna corporate ladder as he’s been named VP of the Central News Desk (which apparently is currently called the Central Content Team). Details in this memo from Tegna’s Chief Content Officer ADRIENNE ROARK. Scott’s been at WTHR since 2015, first as Digital Director and then (in 2022 ) Director of Content. He’s also worked in Salt Lake City, South Bend, and for another Indianapolis station.

Names in the News (and other stuff):

As you know by now, both Sinclair’s and Nexstar’s boycott of JIMMY KIMMEL didn’t last very long. CNN’s Reliable Sources Newsletter has many interesting stories and angles about this. If you don’t subscribe…you should, and like all the best newsletters, it’s free. 🙂

The Wall Street Journal profiles Nexstar CEO PERRY SOOK who was the first to pull Kimmel off the air.

NBC named MATT FRUCCI Executive Producer of Nightly News.

Amparo

RAQUEL AMPARO, who left her job as General Manager of CBS owned KTVT-TV in Dallas last month, joins Tegna as one of its VPs of Content. She’ll oversee stations in Texas and posted about her new job…and her old one…on Linkedin. The move reunites her with ADRIENNE ROARK who is now Chief Content officer for Tegna but previously worked at CBS as President of CBS News and Stations.

News Press and Gazette’s KION-TV in Monterrey shut down its news department this week in favor or airing newscasts from CBS’s KPIX-TV in San Francisco. That also meant the end of a Spanish language newscast on the Telemundo affiliate. The Desk has more.

Often a joke as to where someone might look for work, the nation’s smallest TV market may soon be no more. Glendive, MT’s, KXGN-TV is being sold to Montana State University, which has filed to convert the station to a PBS affiliate. According to this article, there is no Nielsen market without a commercial station.

Are you tired of cheery stories like the last two? Considering making a move to teaching? Then check out this story in the SPJ Magazine The Quill from someone who make such a move, KEVIN FINCH. He worked for three stations here in Indianapolis, two as news director, before moving to academia.

General Manager News and Notes:

To the best of my knowledge, NO general manager changes this week.
