Monday, June 2, 2025 UPDATE:

Greetings:

A big change for a long-troubled Atlanta station, and a group owner puts up the ‘for sale’ sign…to the surprise of few.

The CBS affiliation in Atlanta is moving from Gray Media’s WANF-TV to CBS owned WUPA-TV effective later this summer. WUPA will launch ‘CBS News Atlanta’ as a streaming service, with no apparent mention of a broadcast news presence. Because we are ‘on your side’ and ‘looking out for you’ and the ‘one to count on’, we have both the CBS news release AND the Gray/WANF release.

It’s the latest challenge for Channel 46, which has gone through several ownerships and multiple call letter and format changes over the years, not to mention a revolving door of GMs and news directors, though, to Gray’s credit, it has been more stable lately. Like most stations in this situation, they are expanding news as you’ll learn in the release above.

Meanwhile, speaking of challenged TV operations, Allen Media has engaged investment banker Moellis & Company to explore the sale of its 28 TV stations which operate in 21 different markets. Here’s the news release.

Finally, apologies to Scripps’ EVP of Media Operations DEAN LITTLETON. We screwed up his name Spellcheck changed his name in last weeks’ edition. 🙂

We’ll have more on all these stories in this weekend’s newsletter.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Greetings:

FOUR news directors and just ONE new opening in this week’s edition, resulting in 34 stations with an ND opening. ONE of those new news directors is in a top 15 market.

We welcome Bandit Productions as a new advertiser, touting a new syndicated segment. Bandit’s is owned by old friend BOB SULLIVAN and LANA DURBAN SCOTT is the senior coordinating producer. The segments feature CANDY VALENTINO who brings smart, relatable financial content to your newscast — at no cost and no catch. Check out the ad just below.

We have TWO obituaries…one for a longtime Alabama newsman and the other for a longtime time (and long ago) Chicago TV critic.

A promotion for a Scripps newsman, a tribute for a retiring Wisconsin ND, and TWO new GMs in top ten markets. That’s in Names in the News. And there are TWO new GMs, both in top ten markets.

Enjoy the week. I will, as long as the Indiana Pacers win a game or two in Oklahoma City! 🙂

Newly Named News Directors:

WTSP-TV, Tampa/St. Petersburg, FL…you learned in an UPDATE earlier this week that JEREMY SETTLE has been named Director of Content for Tegna Florida, and news director for this CBS affiliate. The news release says he will also ‘lead efforts to collaborate with Tegna’s NBC/ABC stations in Jacksonville. NICOLE WOLFE had been Director of Content here. Not sure what this means for her but have inquired.

WFRV-TV, Green Bay, WI…the same UPDATE that told you about Jeremy’s new job also updated you on JOE RADSKE. We reported last week that he had left WEAU-TV in Eau Claire, but learned mid-week that’s because he is headed to this Nexstar owned CBS affiliate. It’s not his first ND job: his career history is here. At WFRV, Joe replaces JOHN LAUGHRIN who is starting his own business.

WDHN-TV, Dothan, AL…RICHARD EVERETT has been promoted to news director for this Nexstar owned ABC affiliate. He had been the digital lead here and replaces GLEN HORN who’s off to San Antonio as ND for WOAI/KABB-TV there.

KAIT-TV, Jonesboro, AR…another promotion here as AARON CASTLEBERRY has been promoted to ND for this Gray Media owned ABC affiliate. He has been the Assistant ND here, but wait! There’s more to his background as you’ll learn in this email to me from GM HATTON WEEKS. Aaron replaces GLENDEL LEVY. She left last month after almost four years as ND.

New News Director Openings:

WGRZ-TV, Buffalo, NY…we told you above that JEREMY SETTLE was headed south, moving within Tegna as to work as Director of Content for Tegna Florida. The full story in the item above.

No paid ads this week. If you need to fill a news director or news management position, there’s no more targeted audience than this. Email me for details: rick@rickgevers.com

May 26, 2025

Thursday, May 28, 2025 UPDATE:

Greetings:

A new and expanded role at Graham Media for the company’s VP of News, and TWO new ND appointments of note.

Sean M.

SEAN McLAUGHLIN will be the next General Manager for Graham’s KPRC-TV (NBC) in Houston. And he’ll continue to develop news strategies for the company’s stations. That announcement came today from Graham President & CEO CATHERINE BADALAMENTE. Sean joined the company in 2024 after a long career in a similar role at Scripps. He’s also held ND jobs in several markets.

Settle

In other news…JEREMY SETTLE is moving within Tegna to be Director of Content for WTSP-TV (CBS) in Tampa-St. Petersburg. This news release says he will also “lead efforts to collaborate on multiplatform news and content” with the company’s Jacksonville NBC/ABC duopoly. Jeremy is currently ND for Tegna’s WGRZ-TV (NBC) in Buffalo, a job he’s held since 2022. His LinkedIn page has his entire career history.

Finally, last weekends’s newsletter shared that JOE RADSKE was leaving WEAU-TV in Eau Claire but we didn’t know where he was headed.

Now we do.

Joe is moving within Wisconsin to be ND for WFRV-TV in Green Bay, the Nexstar owned CBS affiliate.

Congrats to Joe, Jeremy, and Sean on their new roles.

We’ll have more on all these stories in this weekend’s newsletter.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Names in the News (and other stuff):

McMahon

You probably already read this week about the departure of WENDY McMAHON as President and CEO of CBS News and Stations and CBS Media Ventures. It is, of course, the latest change in what seems to be constant upheaval at CBS. Here’s the memo Wendy sent to employees announcing her departure in which she said it was clear that she and the company do not agree on ‘the path forward’.

Meanwhile, a former president of the CBS TV stations is apparently in line for a big payday. The New York Post reports that PETER DUNN is going to receive about $10 millions dollars in a settlement relating to his dismissal in 2021.

RTDNA announced the regional Murrow award winners last week. The complete list is here.

Second generation broadcaster ANDREW ALTENBERN joins KCCI-TV (Hearst/CBS) as the assistant ND. More here. Many of our older readers might remember his father JOHN,  a former ND at KGAN-TV in Cedar Rapids who later worked as a consultant.

Ball

Former KTLA-TV (Los Angeles) news director JASON BALL is launching a new podcast. It’s called Life After News – a podcast about journalists who are navigating what comes next. It’s part platform, part community, and part conversation starter for people who’ve spent their careers telling other people’s stories and are now asking, what’s mine? You can find it here.

General Manager News and Notes:

CHARLIE SLAIGHT assumes additional duties as station manager at WFXT-TV (FOX) in Ft. Myers, FL. He’s been the sales director for this Scripps station.

May 18, 2025

Thursday, May 22, 2025 UPDATE:

Greetings:

A 32 year career at the same station will come to an end this September.

Nogy

That’s when STACEY NOGY will leave Tegna’s KARE-TV (NBC) in Minneapolis. She’s been the news director there since December, 2020, when she was promoted from News Content Director. GM DOUG WIEDER sent this note for those who missed the staff meeting.

As you would expect during 32 years there, Stacey held a number of jobs, including Assistant News Director, Executive Producer, and producer.

She also worked, I believe, in San Diego.

Our weekly newsletter will come on Monday due to the holiday weekend, and a busy Sunday for me, given my planned attendance at both the world’s largest single day sporting event, the Indy 500, and game three of the NBA Eastern Conference Finals between the Indiana Pacers and the New York Knicks.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Greetings:

It’s a VERY busy week, with lots of ND changes and way too many departures of old friends, some (but not all) from retirement.

There are FOUR new news directors to tell you about, with THREE new openings. ONE of those new ND’s named is in a top ten market. We now have 37 stations looking for a news director.

ONE of those ND openings is featured in a paid help wanted ad. Hint: It’s a BIG job in a BIG market.

And RTDNA is promoting its upcoming convention in New Orleans next month. That ad is just below.

We mentioned lots of departures. Those are covered in Names in the News, along with a new job for a former Tucson news director.

And Gray made TWO general manager moves.

It’s all below! Take a few minutes away from your preparation for both the NBC Eastern Conference Finals (Pacers-Knicks, starting Wednesday) and the upcoming Indy 500 (next Sunday night) and read on!

RTDNA25 isn’t just another conference; it’s where journalism’s future takes shape.

Join us June 11–13 at the Hotel Monteleone in New Orleans for a one-of-a-kind experience built around:

  • Hands-on workshops — no panels, no lectures.
  • Small-group breakouts that spark connection and new ideas
  • Real conversations with industry leaders with newsroom leaders and changemakers

Every session is interactive. Every topic is practical. You’ll leave with tools you can use, a stronger network, and a renewed sense of purpose.

We’ll tackle critical topics like:

  • Mental health and newsroom burnout
  • Leading Gen Z journalists
  • AI and journalism ethics
  • Building trust and collaboration in teams

Check out the full schedule — including pre-conference workshops and breakout sessions — and start planning your experience! You’ll walk away with more than insights; you’ll leave with an improved leadership toolkit, an expanded support network and a renewed purpose in your work.

But act soon! The group rate at Hotel Monteleone expires after May 21, and registration rates increase after June 4. Lock in your spot at the best possible rate.

Names in the News (and other stuff):

WAY too many old friends leaving the business, sometimes via retirement…and sometimes not.

Connell

We told you yesterday that SANDRA CONNELL is leaving Talent Dynamics next month. Here’s the note she sent me. It would hard to underestimate the impact she’s had on hundreds (if not thousands) of careers…and often the people she helped had no idea of her role in their careers. She’s been in the business for more than 45 years and will be missed. Her note above contains contact information if you want to reach out.

Finlayson

ANDREW FINLAYSON is retiring June 30th, 15 years to the day that he started at consulting firm SmithGeiger, where he is now the EVP of Digital and AI strategies. Andrew passed along this note worthy of your time. Andrew held three ND jobs: in Chicago (WFLD-TV-FOX), San Francisco/Oakland (KTVU-TV-FOX), and Nashville (WSMV-TV-NBC). There were other stops, along the way, of course, as detailed here.

Prieto

Another retirement: AL PRIETO from ABC News, where he is a Vice President of ABC News, overseeing News One, which means he had lot of interaction and impact on the network’s relationship with affiliate stations. Al posted this note on Linkedin. He’s been with ABC News for 42 years, beginning as a booker, researcher and production assistant on Good Morning America.

Roach

But wait, there’s more! Multi-time news director KEVIN ROACH is also retiring. He’s spent the last five years working at WJLA-TV, Sinclair’s ABC affiliate in Washington, DC, where he spent the last two years overseeing the I-Team. Kevin shared the note he sent to his co-workers a week ago Friday. He’s had several ND jobs and a long stint with the Associated Press. All of his background is here.

Finally, we told you a few weeks ago that JOHN LAUGHRIN was leaving as ND for WFRV-TV to start his own business. New this edition: The station interviewed him as his 25 year career in news comes to an end.

Thor W.

THOR WASBOTTEN continues to prove there is life after news. He’s a former ND in Tucson and Boise who then moved to higher education with jobs at Penn State and Kent State. He then went on to Santa Clara University as managing director of the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics. Now, Thor is headed to Belmont University to serve as executive director of the Edward C. Kennedy Center for Business Ethics.

We erred last week in reporting this story. Nexstar has named BILL NARDI as VP of Station Operations. That’s correct, but we goofed on the name of the person he is replacing. He’ll replace MARK TAYLOR TURNER who is retiring. Bill’s been in a similar job for Tegna.

Dennison

Due to an editing error, our report last week on DAN DENNISON’s retirement failed to include his email address. Dan a longtime news manager, is retiring from his job as Communications Director at the Hawai’i Dept. of Land and Natural Resources. Here’s his note, this time WITH his email address for friends who want to wish him well. Dan had SIX ND stops over the years.

General Manager News and Notes:

Gray made two GM moves at stations in Nebraska, promoting SHANNON BOOTH to GM for WOWT-TV in Omaha, and replacing her in Lincoln with JACQUE HARMS who returns to Nebraska from her GM position at KKTV in Colorado Springs.

May 11, 2025

Saturday, May 17, 2025 UPDATE:

Greetings:

It is ABSOLUTELY the end of an era.

Connell

After more than 45 years of having a huge impact on the careers of thousands of people (whether they knew she had a role or not), SANDRA CONNELL will leave Talent Dynamics next month. More in this note Sandra sent me this morning.

She started at Talent Dynamics in 1979 when it was part of consulting firm Audience Research & Development, bought the company when AR&D went through significant changes in 1996 and sold it to Glass City Talent three years ago.

She continued working but that will end next month.

For the few reading this that may not know, TD hosts the largest existing library of on-air talent. Stations looking for new anchors, meteorologist, etc., would (in the old days) make the trek to Dallas to look at tapes of potential employees (I made that trip several times myself in my long-ago news director days.)

What made Sandra special was her intimate knowledge of everyone in the business, on-air or off, good, bad, and indifferent.

In sports and entertainment, there are stars known by one name: LeBron. Cher. Michael. Madonna, Tiger. Peyton.

Sandra held such a position in our industry. When someone said Sandra, no last name was needed.

Her contact information is contained in her message above if you wish to send her a kind note.

We’ll see you later this weekend with a full newsletter, with lots of news director changes to share.

regards,

Rick Gevers

**** ***** ****

Greetings:

As I predicted, there was (deservedly) very little sympathy for me last week as I shared the difficulties of publishing that edition (FOUR televised sporting events involving favorites) all day Sunday.

Today. just ONE such event, game four of the Indiana Pacers and Cleveland Cavaliers NBC Eastern Conference semifinals. (8:00 PM on TNT).

We’re going..which is why we’re early!

If you are looking for me, my seats are directly at center court.

In the second row.

Of the upper deck. 😉

You have a better chance of winning PowerBall than seeing me.

Once again, we are, I am pretty sure. the first to report ONE of our TWO new openings this week…and that’s in a top 20 market. And there’s ONE new ND which you first learned about in a Wednesday UPDATE.

Our list of stations with ND openings stands at 38.

NO paid help wanted ads this week, and NO obits, as well. ONE of those items is good.

In a move that should strike fear into country club membership directors everywhere, a big four network affiliate in a top 20 market will operate without a general manager. That’s below in our GM section, along with Sinclair’s appointment of someone who’ll be GM for a lot of stations.

And lots of items in Names in the News: A veteran ND shares her battle with breast cancer, a well known industry figure wasn’t out of work long, and SIX time ND is retiring from his current job in the public sector in Hawaii. Those are just a few of the stories.

Read on for more!

Newly Named News Director:

Hoffman

WKYC-TV, Cleveland, OH…Wednesday’s UPDATE told you that JEFF HOFFMAN is the next ND at this Tegna owned NBC affiliate. It’s a reversal of a trend of a ND turning GM…in the case, Jeff’s most recent three jobs were all GM positions. Here’s the memo to the staff, the news release, and Jeff’s Linkedin page. BTW, the emailed version of that UPDATE erred in reporting that Jeff was replacing MICKI BYRNES, so many to wondered if he’d be the GM there. No. He replaces JON ADKINS. JOHN TREVINO replaced Micki as GM.

New News Director Openings:

Tina C.

WFTV, Orlando, FL…TINA COMMODORE has left this Cox Media owned ABC affiliate. She’s been the news director here since February, 2020, coming from another COX station, KOKI-TV (FOX) in Tulsa, OK, and previously worked for Cox’s WSB-TV (ABC) in Atlanta. Tina’s also worked in Richmond, VA, Columbus, OH, and Cincinnati, as well as for CNN.

Teater

KTHV-TV, Little Rock, AR…SHAYLA TEATER will leave this Tegna owned CBS station. Her Linkedin post explains her decision. She’s worked here for 18 years and spent a lot more time there than that, as she often accompanied her father, DOUG KRILE, to work where he was the main anchor. Shayla’s been the ND here for 5+ years and also worked in Greensboro and Columbia, MO.

Names in the News (and other stuff):

Julie M.

Please join me in wishing WBAY-TV (Green Bay, WI) News director JULIE MORAVCHIK well. She’s gone public with her battle with breast cancer, and offers good advice for all women in this story. She’s been ND here for three-plus years, was an ND for another Green Bay station as well as in Jefferson City, MO. Her complete work history is here.

Mahaney

CHIP MAHANEY’s time looking for work was short lived. He’s landed at his alma mater, Southern Methodist University, where he will work with student media AND relaunch a sports journalism program. Be sure to check out his Linkedin post which included a clever graphic about his new job. Chip spent many years at Scripps, most recently with the talent acquisition team looking for emerging talent. He’s also been an ND in Cincinnati and Richmond and worked in Dallas.

Congratulations to the investigative team at Cox Media Group: it’s the winner of the FIRST broadcast award from a relatively new award contest by the Center for News Integrity in News Reporting. You may remember CINR’s ad in this space a few months ago trying to drum up more broadcast entires. Cox was honored for a special on payment problems at Social Security.

Erica J.

Speaking of Cox and investigative, its Boston station, WFXT-TV (FOX) has hired a former investigative producer from its Atlanta station, (WSB-TV), as its new managing editor. ERICA JORGENSEN has been working as the EP of Special Projects and Streaming at WBTS in Boston, the NBC owned operation there. She’s also worked in news management roles at other NBC o-and-o’s, WNBC-TV in New York and WVIT-TV in Hartford. Here’s the staff memo from WFXT ND SCOTT ISAACS.

Continuing with news of investigative people, we are late in sharing that ABC News EP of Investigative, CINDY GALLI, was among the victims of a large ABC news layoff a month of two ago. More in this NY Post story. Cindy is a longtime member of the IRE Board of Directors.

Nexstar has named BILL NARDI as VP of Station Operations. He’ll replace MARK TAYLOR TURNER who is retiring. Bill’s been in a similar job for Tegna.

Dennison

Finally, congratulations (or should we say Aloha?) to longtime news manager DAN DENNISON. Dan’s retiring from his job as Communications Director at the Hawai’i Dept. of Land and Natural Resources. He shared this note with us about his past and future. That past includes SIX ND stops over the years and his note has his email address for old friends who’d like to reach out.

General Manager News and Notes:

We mentioned this in Wednesday’s UPDATE, but, in what appears to be an unusual move, WKMG-TV in Orlando will NOT replace JEFF HOFFMAN as GM. The Graham Media station has decided instead to have department heads report to their corporate supervisors.

Sinclair has named JOHN HANNON to be GM of a whole bunch of stations in Nebraska. Details here.
