Thursday, July 17, 2025 UPDATE:

Greetings:

For the second time this week, a Tegna senior news manager has left the building. (Alert: Elvis reference there. Younger readers can look it up.)

Rick M.

This time it’s RICK McLAUGHLIN, who’d been news director for the company’s WBNS-TV (CBS) in Columbus, OH, since June, 2023. Here’s the note that went out Monday from General Manager RICK ROGALA. McLaughlin…an Ohio native…went to WBNS after four years as ND for WAPT-TV in Jackson, MS, part of a 13 year career with Hearst. His complete career timeline is detailed in his Linkedin profile.

His departure preceded by two days that of KSDK-TV (St. Louis) Director of Content MORGAN SCHAAB, who resigned yesterday after 18 months at that Tegna NBC affiliate.

We’ll see you this Sunday with our full newsletter, or earlier if news warrants an UPDATE.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Wednesday, July 16, 2025 UPDATE:

A bad comedian…and probably more than one…has oft proven that timing is….

…everything.

Schaab

And the timing is certainly curious in St. Louis, where MORGAN SCHAAB resigned today as director of content for Tegna’s KSDK-TV. Her resignation comes just two weeks before news director ART HOLLIDAY (who reported to her) retires…and the very day after a well produced, if gentle, ‘roast’ of Art at the Missouri History Museum. Art spent 46 years at the station in five very distinct roles. (I was honored to attend. Art invited me as I had told him about the opening for his first job there, weekend sports anchor. We were classmates at Missouri.)

Morgan became director of Content at KSDK in early 2024, joining from Tegna’s KFSM-TV in Ft. Smith, AR, where she was also Director of Content. She previously was a news director in Decatur, IL.

GM ALICIA EISNER sent this note to the staff this morning.

By the way, if you want to watch Art’s roast, the station streamed it and posted the video to YouTube today. Several longtime KSDK anchors were among the speakers.

Have a great week…

regards,

Rick Gevers

Greetings:

There’s a new ND in the number ONE market this week.

That’s one of TWO new NDs hired. And there are TWO new openings. We’ve also removed TWO stations from our list as parent companies have assigned managers from nearby sister stations to run those newsrooms.

Those changes leave 34 stations on our list of openings.

ONE of those openings (in a TOP TEN market) is one of our TWO Paid Help Wanted ads this week…the other is for an Assistant ND job in the south.

But the most important thing in this week’s edition is a column from HANK PRICE about what YOU should be doing NOW to prepare yourself for the likely upcoming wave of layoffs that’s almost certain to result in lots of changes to our business. And those layoffs will hit EVERY position, from GMs on down.

Hank’s column is below in Names in the News (right after the first of the many expected station ownership changes).

I strongly urge you to read it.

Newly Named News Directors:

Dobson

WPIX-TV, New York, NY…the first of our TWO Monday UPDATES reported BEN DOBSON’s move within Nexstar to be the next ND for this CW affiliate. GM CHRIS O’DONNELL shared the news. Ben’s been the ND for WDCW/WDVM-TV in Washington for 3+ years and worked for NBC in Boston and Hartford before that. More on his background here. He replaces NICOLE TINDIGLIA who moves to Director of Digital Content. Nexstar operates the station for Mission Broadcasting. More on Mission here.

  Snow

WHIO-TV, Dayton, OH…LONI (BLANDFORD) SNOW takes her second Dayton ND job as the ND for this Cox Media owned CBS affiliate. Earlier in her career Loni was ND for Nexstar’s WDTN-TV (NBC) before taking a job on the recruiting staff for Nexstar, though that position was eliminated late last year. She’s also worked in Indianapolis, Nashville, and Las Vegas. among other stops. She replaces JOE COWAN who was promoted to ND for Cox’s WSB-TV (ABC) in Atlanta.

And we’ve removed TWO stations from our list of openings as ND’s from sister stations in other markets will oversee them.

KMID/KPEJ-TV, Odessa, TX…RUSS POTEET, news director for sister Nexstar operation KLBK-TV in Lubbock, will be in charge here. Russ has been ND in Lubbock for more than 22 years.

KIMT-TV, Mason City, IA…LISA BURGER, ND of sister Allen Media station KWWL-TV in Waterloo, IA…will supervise this newsroom.

New News Director Openings:

WDCW/WDVM-TV, Washington, DC…you learned above that BEN DOBSON is off to the big city as ND for Nexstar’s WPIX-TV (CW) in New York. You can learn more about this opportunity in the number one market by checking out the display ad just below.

Larson

WXMI-TV, Grand Rapids, MI…JACE LARSON is leaving this Scripps’ owned FOX affiliate after nine months as news director. GM KIM KRAUSE told the staff via this email. Her note mentions an ND job out of Scripps: Jace told via email tonight that his new station hasn’t yet announced his hire but he’ll pass it along when it does. Jace began his career on air, and worked as an investigative reporter in Denver and Houston.

Greetings:

Changes at FOX owned stations created TWO of our THREE ND openings this week. And the TWO new position that were filled were in a pretty small markets.

Our count of open ND jobs remains at 36 because we added a station in Corpus Christi that opened up a few weeks ago…but due to an editing error we failed to include it when we should have.

No paid ads this week. If you’re having trouble filling a news management opening, can you find a more targeted place to advertise that job?

The biggest story of the week was probably Paramount settling its lawsuit filed by President Trump. I couldn’t find anything to add to that coverage that you likely hadn’t already seen.

So I didn’t include anything. Sue me.

Too soon?

New this edition: The full obituary for legendary broadcaster BILL APPLEGATE who died suddenly this week. That’s below.

Lots of GM changes, including some at FOX o-and-o’s. Gray named TWO new GMs (including promoting a current ND) and, not to be left out, Sinclair named one as well.

And in Names in the News, a Variety interview with TIM WIELAND, the (relatively) new GM for KCBS/KCAL-TV in Los Angeles on his plans there.

All that and more as you read on.

Newly Named News Directors:

Konoske

WLUC-TV, Marquette, MI…SHANNON KONOSKE has been promoted to news director for this Gray Media owned NBC and FOX affiliates. She’s been the Assistant ND there. She’s worked here since 2021 and replaces ANDREW LACOMBE who is leaving for a new opportunity.

KIDY-TV, San Angelo, TX, has filled its open Director of Content position but the name has not yet been released. We will, of course, fill you in when we can.

New News Director Openings:

A number of changes at FOX owned stations.

Paul M.

WTTG-TV, Washington, DC…congratulations to PAUL McGONAGLE who’s been promoted to GM for sister FOX o-and-o WJBK-TV in Detroit where he will replace GREG EASTERLY, who is retiring. Paul’s been ND at WTTG for more than ten years, and previously was ND for FOX’s WFXT-TV in Boston. Paul’s also worked in Providence, Cedar Rapids, IA, and White River Junction, VT.

Moore

WJBK-TV, Detroit, MI…Paul’s first job as GM at his new station will be to find a new news director. LAURA MOORE, who’s been the ND here since 2023, has left the station, where she had worked since 1998. This story from The Detroit Free-Press has more details. And this news release from FOX has more details on Paul’s move AND the promotion of AMBER EIKEL to Regional GM. She’ll oversee KTTV in Los Angeles while continuing as GM of Fox’s KCPQ-TV in Seattle.

Laszewski

WMTV, Madison, WI…JESSICA LASZEWSKI is leaving this Gray Media station to return to WSAW-TV in Wausau, WI, as GM. Jessica has been the ND at this NBC affiliate since 2017. She’d earlier been the ND at WSAW, and briefly served as an ND in South Bend.

Tuesday, July 1, 2025 UPDATE:

Greetings:

A legendary…and sometimes controversial figure in TV news has died.

BILL APPLEGATE, who served as a news director and general manager at many large market stations, died this morning, according to this Facebook post from his son, WILLIAM APPLEGATE, who followed his dad into the business. (Many of the many comments on that FB post are from names you will recognize.) Bill retired in 2014 after 13 years at this last job, GM for (then) Raycom’s WOIO/WUAB-TV in Cleveland.

When he retired, there were a number of stories, of course. Here’s one from The Cleveland Plain-Dealer, while this one is from ROBERT FEDER, the longtime Chicago TV writer. Bill had TWO stints in Chicago, one as ND for WLS-TV and the other as GM for WBBM-TV.

I’m sure there will be more stories in the days ahead.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Monday, June 30, 2025 UPDATE:

Greetings:

As we hinted last night, more news from Tegna as it restructures its news management team

Valentine

MICHAEL VALENTINE and JAVIER MORGADO have been named Vice Presidents of Content, each overseeing a specific cluster of stations. Michael is a 12 year veteran of Tegna, and is currently VP/Station Manager for WUSA-TV (CBS) in DC. He’s a former ND for WFAA-TV in Dallas, among other stations. Javier is currently with CNN, and has worked for NBC News and in his hometown of Miami. More on each and their duties in this news release.

We’ll be back this weekend with our full newsletter…or earlier if developments warrant another UPDATE.

Rick Gevers

Greetings:

Some big changes in Tegna’s news management created TWO openings at top 15 market stations. And we have TWO new news directors, one in a top 20 market.

Our count of open ND jobs remains at 34.

ONE of those new openings is featured in a Paid Help Wanted ad below.

We have ONE obituary for a longtime news manager who started as a reporter in a small Minnesota market before moving to much bigger roles.

Just ONE GM change, but at a powerhouse legacy station.

In Names in the News, the National EMMY awards for news and documentaries were revealed this week. We have the list. We also have a not-pretty forecast of what changes will happen to local stations if/when the FCC relaxes ownership rules. And a TV investigative reporter is the new President of IRE.

Finally, our mention last week of the vast difference in attendance at the IRE and RTDNA conventions caught the eye of former ND (and new blogger) KIRK VARNER, whose first blog post on the topic generated more reaction for him than any of this previous 50 or so posts in the short history of his blogging career. Here are links:

Names in the News (and other stuff):

It’s widely expected that changes in the makeup of the FCC will result in changes in ownership regulations, which will lead to massive consolidation of station ownership. Former GM and consultant HANK PRICE looks at what that will mean. Warning: You may not like what he forecasts.

ABC’s World News Tonight won the National Emmy for Outstanding Live News Program. It was one of many awards given out over two nights…the complete list is here.

Meanwhile, ABC News has a new New York Bureau Chief (GREG CROFT) and a new Director of News Services (JENNY WAGNON COURTS).

Hinkle

Board members of IRE elected JOSH HINKLE to a two year term as president of the organization. He’s the Director of Investigations and Innovations for Nexstar’s KXAN-TV (NBC) in Austin, TX. KATE HOWARD was chosen as VP, and MARK GREENBLATT was re-elected treasurer. Past President BRIAN ROSENTHAL of the New York Times will serve as a non voting chair of the board.

General Manager News and Notes:

Gray

Just ONE GM change this week. WRAL/WRAZ-TV (NBC/FOX) in Raleigh named HEATHER GRAY as GM. She’d been the interim GM since JOEL DAVIS left for WCAU-TV (NBC owned) in Philadelphia. Heather had been station manager and creative services manager during her career at WRAL.

June 22, 2025

Greetings:

We’re delayed as we were watching game seven of the NBA Finals where my Indiana Pacers fell short. Congrats to the Oklahoma City Thunder.

We have just TWO changes this week. ONE new news director and ONE new opening, so there are still 34 ND jobs available.

ONE of those openings is featured in a Paid Help Wanted ad below.

Sorry to report the death of a former news director who held that job in four markets, the last for 22 years.

There are a lot of GM changes, as well, many in big markets.

Finally, part of our tardiness is travel to/from the IRE Convention in New Orleans where it was a pleasure to see some of you. As longtime readers know, that’s by far my favorite convention. More on the convention below.

Attendance at IRE this year topped 1,650.

Attendance at RTDNA last week (also in New Orleans): 180.

Have a great week.

Newly Named News Directors:

Kalish

WOI-TV, Ames/Des Moines, IA…MATT KALISH gets his first news director job at this Tegna owned ABC affiliate. He’s currently the EP at Griffin’s KOTV (CBS) affiliate in Tulsa. Matt’s also worked for Griffin’s KWTV (also CBS) in Oklahoma City, and has worked in Wichita and Columbia, MO. At WOI, he replaces PERRY PACE who left in March after three years as ND to take the ND job at WRCB-TV in Chattanooga.

New News Director Openings:

Hoffman

WKYC-TV Cleveland, OH…JEFF HOFFMAN’s return to a newsroom was short-lived. Our UPDATE earlier this week told you that he had left this Tegna owned NBC affiliate after just one month as news director. His hire there surprised many, as he had spent the last 22 years as either a General Manager or Station Manager at four different stations, most recently 9+ years as GM for WKMG-TV (Graham/CBS) in Orlando.

Obituary:

Brennan

Sorry to report the death of longtime news director KEVIN BRENNAN. Kevin died Monday at the age of 73 in Savannah, where he spent 22 years as ND for Nexstar’s WSAV-TV before retiring in 2022. Kevin was also a news director in Tampa, Jacksonville, and New Orleans. His former station reported this brief story. But your time will be better spent reading this more detailed obituary.

Names in the News (and other stuff):

As mentioned above, the IRE convention ended today in New Orleans, where six members were elected (or re-elected) to board of directors. Of note: FOUR of the six were broadcasters.

Keeshan

IRE also inducted three members into its Ring of Honor, among them former investigative reporter KEVIN KEESHAN. It was a big week for Kevin, who also announced his retirement after 47 years, the last 14 at NBC. He is currently EVP of News Editorial for the NBC owned stations. He’s also a former ND at ABC’s KFSN-TV in Fresno, and at KGO-TV in San Francisco, where he worked with GM VALARI STAAB who hired him at NBC and sent out this note on his retirement.

Kovaleski

Speaking of investigative reporters and retirements, TONY KOVALESKI is retiring later this year after 42 years exposing wrongdoing. Tony has worked in Phoenix, Houston, San Francisco and twice at KMGH-TV in Denver, which had this story on his retirement. Of note: Tony’s daughter JENNIFER followed in his footsteps and now is also an investigative reporter at KMGH.

JACKLYNN SYLVESTER moves within Tegna to become Assistant ND at KSDK-TV (NBC) in St. Louis. She’s a former ND in Decatur, IL who has been the AND at WBNS-TV in Columbus, OH. She will be replaced there by ABBEY BAKER (MEIER) who’s been the Dayside EP. Abbey’s also worked in Ft. Myers.

General Manager News and Notes:

Lots of GM news this week. Lots, and several of the moves at FOX owned stations.

GLENN BERK, who’s been the GM for FOX’s WITI-TV in Milwaukee, moves to WFLD-TV in Chicago, where he replaces SHEILA OLIVER, who is retiring. MIM DAVEY (a former news director) will replaces Glenn in Milwaukee AND continue to serve as GM for KMSP/WFTC-TV in Minneapolis. More details here.

Another former news director, DAVID HUGHES, moves within Gray Media to become GM for WFSB-TV (CBS) in Hartford. He’d been GM for Gray’s WOIO/WUAB-TV in Cleveland. In Hartford, he replaces DANA NEVES, who was promoted to Senior Managing Vice President for the company.

MICHAEL BROUDER is stepping down in August as GM for Tegna’s WTHR-TV (NBC) in Indianapolis. Michael told me he is going to Ball State in nearby Muncie, IN, to teach. He’s been an adjunct there. By the time he leaves, Michael’s will have been GM here for six years…and five years before that as the director of marketing. His complete career history is here.

And WES MILBOURN is retiring as VP/GM of Nexstar’s KFOR-TV in Oklahoma City. He’s been GM there since 2006 in his second stint at the station, interrupted by a brief time in Omaha.
