Congratulations to LISA WHITE who has been promoted to VP/News Director for CBS owned KPIX-TV in San Francisco. She’s been the Assistant News Director there for 22 years. Lisa earlier worked at KRON-TV in San Francisco for ten years, as well as six years working a producer in Seattle.

Details in this news release from CBS/Paramount.

Lisa replaces MARK NEERMAN who left the station in early January.

In fairness, there was a GM change after Mark left which undoubtedly slowed the search.

Two ND changes in medium markets to share with you today.

Reynolds

KATHY REYNOLDS leaves WUSA-TV (CBS/Tegna-soon-to-be-Standard-Media) in Washington, where she was News Content Director, for sunny Florida and Scripps WPTV (NBC), where her title will be News Director. This staff memo from GM BILL SIEGEL has more details. Kathy’s a former ND in Toledo, Flint, and Portland, ME.

At WPTV, she replaces NICOLE HOGENSEN who left in March to return to her native Ohio as ND for Sinclair’s WSYX/WTTE-TV (ABC/FOX) in Columbus. Nicole spent six years as news director (and eleven years) at WPTV.

Woodard

Meanwhile, family reasons have caused JEFF WOODARD to step down as news director for Tegna’s WGRZ-TV (NBC). Jeff just returned to WGRZ in March after six years away. He was the news director there for seven years (part of his 18 years at the station) before leaving in 2016 to become marketing director for SUNY-Fredonia. Jeff had replaced ATHAN KOMPOS who left last year after 20 years, four as ND.

WBTW-TV, Myrtle Beach, SC…PAUL CARON moves within Nexstar to take over as news director for this CBS affiliate. Paul’s been the ND for Nexstar’s WHNT-TV (also CBS) in Huntsville, AL for the last three years. Paul spent much of his career in Atlanta at WGCL-TV and CNN, where he worked for 30 years. Paul’s also worked in Miami. At WBTW, Paul replaces RYAN WEBB who returned to Nexstar’s WKRN-TV in Nashville and his old job as EP of the late news.

WTVO/WQRF-TV, Rockford, IL…COVENTRY ADRIAN has been promoted to news director for this Nexstar operation. She had been the assignment editor there, but has an extensive background with stops in several markets. Details on her Linkedin page. Nexstar owns WQRF, a FOX affiliate, and operates WTVO (ABC) which is owned by Mission Broadcasting.

KMIR-TV, Palm Springs, CA…according to the station’s website, TRINO MARTINEZ has been promoted from Assistant ND to news director for this Entravision owned NBC affiliate. He replaces GINO LAMONT who left earlier this year. Trino becomes the fourth ND in five years here.

WBKB-TV, Alpena, MI…KEVIN HODGE returns as ND and anchor for this locally owned station. He had worked at WBKB before moving to WWTV in Cadillac, MI.

New News Director Openings:

WITI-TV, Milwaukee, WI…JIM WILSON has left this Fox o-and-o after more than 30 years of service, the last three as news director. Jim started at the station of as photographer, was promoted to chief photographer, and then upped to Assistant News Director in 2017. He ascended to the ND chair in 2019 when JOHN LaPORTE left the station to go to KIRO-TV (Cox/CBS) in Seattle.

WINK-TV, Ft. Myers, FL…a promotion for longtime news director TOM DOERR creates an opening for an ND at this locally owned CBS affiliate. Tom shared: My new title is Director of Local News & Content. My responsibilities will continue oversight of WINK News and Noticias WINK, but will also include oversight of Gulfshore Life and Gulfshore Business magazines. He’s been ND here since 2016 and has an impressive background.

WHNT-TV, Huntsville, AL…you learned above that PAUL CARON is leaving one Nexstar CBS affiliate for another, as he’s moving to WBTW-TV in Myrtle Beach as ND. Paul was ND here for three years. The station is advertising for his replacement: check out their ad just below.

WETM-TV, Elmira, NY…this Nexstar owned NBC affiliate is looking for a new news director to replace ZACH WHEELER. This story in the local newspaper explains why the search is necessary. Zach was just promoted to news director last February. He’d been at the station for more than 15 years and had been the main anchor and managing editor for almost four years.

Glenn

JULIE GLENN, the news director for WGCU-TV (PBS) in Ft. Myers, FL, died Saturday, April 30th. She was 50, and succumbed to a progression of glioblastoma. Julie had been at the station for almost six years and previously worked at WGEM-TV in Quincy, IL. In between, she spent time working in the wine industry. Her full life story (with many pictures) is in this obituary.

According to his Linkedin page, CESAR ALDAMA has joined Frank N. Magid & Associates as a Senior Consultant. Cesar most recently worked as VP of News & Production for the Black News Channel. He’s also a former news director for WFOR-TV (CBS owned) in Miami, news operations manager for WCAU-TV (NBC owned) in Philadelphia, Senior Director of News for Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic (among other jobs), but he started as a photographer in Miami.

It was great to see a few of you at NAB in Las Vegas this past week, though attendance (I saw a figure of 52,000+) was far below the 92,000 of 2019.

Another slow week of ND changes, with just ONE new opening and ONE new vacancy, created by the retirement of a three time ND who’s been in his current role for more than 20 years.

So our list of ND openings remains at 33.

ONE new paid ad this week from a Florida station.

There is ONE obituary for a former Tulsa news director who is MUCH better known for the jobs he held after he left Oklahoma.

Hartz

A former news director for KOTV in Tulsa died this week, but you may better remember JIM HARTZ for his long career at NBC News, including a two year stint as host of the Today Show. He also anchored for NBC owned stations in New York and Washington. Obituaries from The Washington Post and The New York Times. Hartz also worked for PBS and wrote a book hoping to increase journalists knowledge of science.

MANY local stations were honored with Headliner Award this week. The complete list is here. The Headliner Awards are among the oldest in the country, first awarded in 1934 by the Press Club of Atlanta City.

Ortiz

AL ORTIZ, who has been the interim executive producer for the CBS Evening News for almost a year, will retire this summer. I couldn’t find any reporting on this on the CBS News website, so we’ll offer this Variety article. He’s a 43 year veteran of the news division, who held many different jobs, including EP of the evening news when DAN RATHER anchored. He began with CBS at CBS Radio.

Longtime news executive PHILLIP HENDRIX has been named News Director of NEWSnet, which describes itself as a 24/7 news channel with a focus on headlines. STACY HYDE has been promoted to executive producer for Graham Media’s KPRC-TV (NBC) in Houston. She has been a producer there.

Another news director turned general manager gets a big promotion…this time to a GM’s job in the second largest market.

Mokhtari

TODD MOKHTARI returns to his native Los Angeles as President and General Manager for NBC’s KNBC/KVEA-TV (NBC-Telemundo.) Todd’s a former news director for KNBC who has been the general manager for NBC’s KNSD/KUAN-TV (also NBC-Telemundo) in San Diego for almost four years. He’s also been an ND for KIRO-TV (Cox/CBS) in Seattle and has worked in San Francisco/San Jose and Sacramento.

Here’s the news release from NBC.

At KNBC, he replaces STEVE CARLSTON and at KVEA he replaces CELIA CHAVEZ. We told you earlier this month that both were leaving and that their jobs would be combined into one.

WZZM-TV, Grand Rapids, MI…BROOKS BLANTON starts May 31st, returning to West Michigan as the ND at this Tegna owned ABC affiliate. Brooks spent 7 1/2 years as ND for Grand Rapids’ FOX station, WXMI-TV (now Scripps) before leaving last year to be ND for Bahakel’s WCCB-TV in Charlotte. Brooks told me a change in his mom’s health brought him back. He replaces JULIE FLYNN who’s returned to sister Tegna station WKYC-TV (NBC) in Cleveland after three years here.

Brooks becomes the THIRD Grand Rapids ND to have been an ND for two different stations in the market.

DAN BOERS replaced Brooks at WXMI, crossing the street from Nexstar’s WOOD-TV.

STANTON TANG replaced Dan at WOOD. Earlier in his career he had been the ND at WZZM.

Only MATT JOHNSON at Sinclair’s WWMT-TV in Kalamazoo is a single station ND in the market.

Well, THAT didn’t last long.

(And we have UPDATES on NAB events of interest and an important UPDATE to a story from last Sunday’s newsletter.)

Warner Bros. Discovery has pulled the plug, effective the end of April, on CNN’s new streaming service, CNN+. Here’s the CNN story on its demise, and here’s one from The Wall St. Journal.

This excerpt from the CNN story:

Hundreds of CNN+ staffers may lose their jobs. (Chris) Licht said in an internal memo that “all CNN+ employees will continue to be paid and receive benefits for the next 90 days to explore opportunities at CNN, CNN Digital and elsewhere in the Warner Bros. Discovery family.”

Staffers who aren’t absorbed elsewhere in the company will receive a minimum of six months of severance, he added.

Two other items:

My story in last Sunday’s newsletter gave you bad information about local stations winning Peabody Award nominations. Both KNTV (NBC owned) in San Jose/San Francisco, which received multiple nominations, and KNXV-TV (Scripps/ABC) in Phoenix were honored. We told you last week…in reporting her departure from KSNF/KODE-TV (ABC/NBC) in Joplin, MO…that her next job would be announced soon…and it was. Leisha was ND for 12 of her 17 years there. In Harrisburg, she replaces OLIVIA DANGLER who transferred to WDTN-TV (NBC) in Dayton. Olivia is an Ohio native, so the move gets her closer to home.

WOI-TV, Des Moines/Ames, IA…PERRY PACE has been named news director for this Tegna owned (sale pending to Standard Media) ABC affiliate. He’s currently the Assistant ND for sister-Tegna station WTHR-TV (NBC) in Indianapolis in his second stint there. (Perry served as an EP at WTHR from 2012-2016 before a three year run as the Assistant ND for Hearst’s WVTM-TV (NBC) in Birmingham). He’s also worked in Houston. Perry replaces RYAN ROBERTSON who left WOI last October and is now, according to his Linkedin page, working as a media consultant and content director.

KRCG-TV, Jefferson City, MO…MEGHAN LANE gets her first news director job at this Sinclair owned CBS affiliate. She’s an eleven year veteran of the station, having first joined as a reporter in 2011 and advancing to weekend anchor, morning anchor, and, in 2014, evening anchor. She also served as interim ND in 2015 for several months. Meghan replaces MARIA MILLER who left way back in November, 2021, after three years as ND.

McConico

KBJR-TV, Duluth, MN…MATT McCONICO returns to his home state as the next ND for this Gray owned NBC/ABC operation. He most recently was the ND for Nexstar’s WTVO-WQRF-TV in Rockford, IL. Matt’s a former ND in Reno and Harrisburg and has worked in Eau Claire, Ft. Myers, and Green Bay. At KBJR, he replaces BRIGGS LeSAVAGE who continues to anchor at the station but gives up the ND chores.

The Peabody Awards announced its nominees, including KUSA-TV (Tegna/NBC) in Denver, the only local commercial station to be honored.  including NBC’s KTNV in San Francisco with several nominations. Other local commercial stations to receive nominations: KNXV-TV (Scripps/ABC) in Phoenix and KUSA-TV (Tegna/NBC) in Denver. Just one general manager move this week, but it’s in a top 20 market as ANDRÉS CHAPARRO moves to Scripps‘ WSFL-TV (CW) in Miami-Ft. Lauderdale. He’s been the GM for Scripps’ KXXV-TV and KRHD-TV, ABC affiliates in the Waco, Bryan, and Temple, TX markets.
