November 3, 2025

Greetings:

Lots of news in this week’s edition. including TWO new news directors and THREE new openings.

Our count of open ND jobs increases ever-so-slightly to 25.

There’s ONE obituary for an Alabama News Director who lost his cancer battle.

Lots of GM changes, including TWO in top 20 markets.

And many stories in Names in the New (and Other Stuff) including a number of stories on all the changes at CBS News, including an AMAZING coincidence involving all the correspondents who were laid off. Amazing, I tell you.

We have details on another ND who is going public with her breast cancer fight to raise awareness for other women. There’s a new EP in Salt Lake City. We recap a controversial station sale here in Indianapolis.

Indiana University changes its attitude towards the student newspaper. And a former ABC VP takes a job at this alma mater…where one of his jobs will be to oversee…the student newspaper!

And there’s more…so read on.

Newly Named News Directors:

Garza

KEYE-TV, Austin, TXa promotion here from Assistant News Director to News Director for ERIN GARZA. She’s been the AND at KEYE for seven years and earlier worked for two stations in Houston. Erin replaces ROB CARTWRIGHT. We told you in September that Rob was leaving (after 12 years as ND here) to become VP/News for WBZ-TV, the CBS o-and-o in Boston. KEYE is a CBS affiliate owned by Sinclair.

Floyd

KXMB/KXMA-TV, Bismarck, ND…KENT FLOYD joins this Nexstar CBS/CW as its next news director. He’s been the Assistant News Director for WATN-TV, the Tegna owned ABC affiliate in Memphis. He’s also worked as a Managing Editor for KARE-TV in Minneapolis and for NBC News in Charlotte among other stops. He replaces STEVE ROLDAN who left in September after just over one year as ND.

New News Director Opening:

Stevens

WBTV, Charlotte, NC…JASON STEVENS has left this Gray Media owned CBS affiliate after 2+ years as ND and three at the station, which he first joined as Assistant News Director in July, 2022. Jason is a former news director in Jackson, MS, an has also held news management positions in a number of other markets as outlined on his Linkedin page.

Julie M.

WBAY-TV, Green Bay, WI…very sorry to tell you that JULIE MORAVCHIK is stepping down as ND for the Gray Media/ ABC affiliate to concentrate on her fight against breast cancer. She revealed a setback in an interview with Wisconsin Public Radio that was covered in the Superior Telegram. We told you just two months ago that she’d ‘rung the bell’ to mark the end of her chemo treatments. Julie’s been the ND here for 3+ years.

Buehler

WTVC-TV, Chattanooga, TN…PHIL BUEHLER is leaving this Sinclair owned ABC affiliate for a job outside of television. He’s been the ND here for four years and will leave in two weeks. Here’s the note he sent the staff. Before WTVC, Phil spent three years as the ND for Gray’s KOTA/KEVN-TV in Rapid City, SD. He started as a sports anchor, began a news anchor, left TV for seven years before returning.

Obituary:

Wingard

If you missed our Thursday UPDATE, sorry to report the death of WSFA-TV (Montogermy, AL) News Director DESMOND WINGARD. He lost his battle with cancer at the age of 46. Desmond had been the ND here for 3+ years but had worked for this Gray Media owned NBC affiliate for 26 years. The station paid him tribute here.

Names in the News (and other stuff):

What an interesting time at CBS News.

You’ve probably read about the layoffs there, including both anchors of CBS News Saturday Morning, MICHELLE MILLER and DANA JACOBSON and the program’s EP, leaving that show’s future uncertain.

A number of correspondents were released, including DEBORA PATTA, JANET SHAMLIAN, NIKKI BATTISTE, NANCY CHEN, ELISE PRESTON and LISA LING.

This report from The Independent points out the obvious. ALL of the laid off on-air people shared something in common.

They are women.

Meanwhile, CBS Mornings anchor GAYLE KING vigorously denied this Variety report that she was headed out of her morning anchor role.

And while most news operations are increasing their streaming efforts, CBS has canceled two streaming programs, CBS Morning News Plus and CBS Evening News Plus, all part of this week’s cost-cutting layoffs.

Friday was the last edition of CBS Evening News Plus, and the program’s anchor, JOHN DICKERSON (who’s also leaving the network, and his co-anchor role on the CBS Evening News at the end of the year) closed the last program with this video on why he went into journalism.

It’s been a rough transition to a new job for JEN BLAKE. We told you in March that she was moving within Gray to be the new ND for WMBF-TV in Myrtle Beach, SC. But shortly after her move, her doctors in Rapid City, SD (where she’d been the ND at KOTA-TV) told her to return to a doctor for followup on her annual mammogram. She’s going public with her case to raise awareness for other women.

MICHAEL O’NEIL starts December 1 as the EP for KSTU-TV, the Scripps owned FOX affiliate in Salt Lake City. It’s the latest job in Michael’s career, including a two year stint at WOOD-TV in Grand Rapids, where we worked together when I was the ND there.

Our Tuesday UPDATE told you of the proposed sale of Scripps’ WRTV (ABC) in Indianapolis to Circle City Broadcasting, which already owns WISH-TV (CW) and WNDY-TV (MyNetworkTV) in Indy. Here’s why, if that deal goes through, it would mark a big change in ownership in the #25 market.

The roller coaster ride over oversight of the student newspaper at Indiana University continued this week. The University has now lifted its ban on ‘news’ in the seven print editions the Indiana Daily Student’ publishes each year. Details from The New York Times. That decision came after a controversy that included the dismissal of the faculty advisor.

Prieto

Apparently not deterred by that development, AL PRIETO has signed on for a new job at his alma mater, Montclair State University. He’ll be the faculty advisor to The Montclarion, the student newspaper there, part of his duties as Special Assistant to the Dean of the College of Communications and Media. We told you last May that Al was retiring as a VP of ABC News, where he oversaw NewsOne. Al spent 42 years at ABC News and kindly sent me this note about his new job.

General Manager News and Notes:

Lots of GM changes this week.

We’ll start in New York, where CRISTINA SCHWARZ will leave WNJU-TV (Telemundo) at the end the year after 12 years as GM. ERIC LERNER, GM of co-owned WNBC-TV, will oversee both stations.

CHRIS CONROY moves within Gray to become GM for WOIO/WUAB-TV (CBS/CW) in Cleveland. He’s been the GM for KFVS-TV in Cape Girardeau and earlier had run Gray’s KAIT-TV in Jonesboro, AR.

And Gray is sending NICK HASENECZ to South Bend as GM of WNDU-TV, its NBC affiliate there. He’s been the Director of Sales and interim GM of WOIO/WUAB-TV in Cleveland.

Finally, Sinclair has named MARK MARTIN GM of KOKH/KOCB-TV in Oklahoma City and KTUL-TV in Tulsa.

October 26, 2025

Thursday, October 30th, 2025 UPDATE:

Sorry to report the death today of an Alabama news director.

Wingard

DESMOND WINGARD died this morning after a battle with cancer. He was 46 years old. He’d been the news director for Gray Media’s WSFA-TV (NBC) in Montgomery for the last 3+ years, but had worked there for 26 years. The station remembered him here.

Our sympathy to his family, friends, at co-workers at WSFA. We’ll share funeral and memorial information when they are available.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Tuesday, October 28th, 2025 UPDATE:

Greetings:

A shocker in Indianapolis this morning.

DeJUAN McCOY, owner of Circle City Broadcasting which already owns WISH-TV (CW) and WNDY-TV (MyNetworkTV), announced this morning that he is buying WRTV (ABC) from Scripps.

Here’s the news release from Circle City and here’s the release from Scripps.

For those of you unfamiliar with the Indianapolis market (and, unless you live there, why would you be?) let me provide some perspective.

Nexstar owns WTTV and WXIN-TV. Those are the CBS and FOX affiliates.

Tegna owns WTHR-TV, the NBC affiliate.

And as mentioned above, Scripps owns WRTV and Circle City owns the former CBS affiliate; WISH-TV, which has a strong on-air news schedule.

And…if you’re been paying attention, you know that Nexstar has announced plans to buy Tegna.

I have a journalism degree, and thus, by law, am not good at math.

But even I can figure out that would leave TWO owners for the five local stations that air newscasts.

But, of course, there are some big IFs here.

IF the FCC approves BOTH deals, and IF both deals make it to the finish line (obligatory racing reference for any story involving Indy, also required by law) this would lead to an unprecedented ownership situation in a top 25 market.

As a bad reporter would say “Only time will tell.”

We hope to have more on this story in our full newsletter this weekend.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Greetings:

You could say this was another slow week, with TWO newly named news directors and ONE new opening (though that opening is at a network o-and-o in a top 20 market.)

Our count of open ND jobs remains at 24.

THREE obituaries (including that of Lassie’s mom. Why, you ask? I ain’t giving it away…you’ll have to read on.) 🙂

Also this week:

  • After 29 years, a longtime GM and former ND is retiring.
  • There’s a new GM headed to a Mississippi station.
  • Got a PR nightmare? Create a task force! That’s what Indiana University is doing.
  • A veteran ND returns to his alma mater after 50 years and details how that school (you’ve heard of it) is changing with the times.
  • And there’s a new Assistant ND in New York.

And there’s more…so read on.

Newly Named News Directors:

Garcia

WBTW-TV, Myrtle Beach/Florence, SC…RICH GARCIA returns to a newsroom as the next news director for this Nexstar owned CBS affiliate. He most recently for served for three years as news director for WINK-TV (CBS) in Ft. Myers, part of his 18 years at that locally owned station. At WBTW, he replaces PAUL CARON who left in September after three years as news director.

Thomas

WPDE-TV, Myrtle Beach/Florence, SC…a promotion here finds LIZ THOMAS moving down the hall to the big office (just guessing, never been there) as she takes over as ND on November 1. She replaces VICTORIA SPECHKO who is retiring after a remarkable 26 years as ND for this Sinclair owned ABC affiliate and 31 years at the station. Liz posted this about her new job and here’s Victoria’s station bio.

New News Director Opening:

Saiers

KOVR/KMAX-TV, Sacramento, CA…PETE SAIERS is leaving this CBS owned duopoly after two years as news director. GM DEBORAH COLLURA sent this note to the staff. It’s Pete’s second stint at KOVR: he earlier worked as a reporter/producer there before going to KPIX-TV (also a CBS o-and-o) in San Francisco. He spent two years as an ND for KTLA-TV in Los Angeles and KING-TV in Seattle.

Obituaries:

Morris

Sorry to share that MACKIE MORRIS lost his daughter JENNIFER MORRIS this week. She was just 45 and had been fighting oral cancer but succumbed to an issue with her lungs. Sadly, it’s not the first time Mackie has lost a child. His son MATT died two years ago. Mackie taught at Missouri, and spent 15 years at Magid before opening his own coaching firm. More information in his post on Linkedin.

Davis

SID DAVIS died earlier this month at 97. He spent seven years as a reporter and ND for WKBN-TV in Youngstown, OH, but he is better known for his role on November 22, 1963. He was covering President Kennedy’s visit to Dallas and served as the pool reporter in the very crowded cabin of Air Force One as LYNDON JOHNSON took the oath of office. This New York Times obituary is worth reading. He also worked for NBC News and the Voice of America.

Lockhart

You are probably wonder why I am including the death of actress JUNE LOCKHART. When you read this obituary, you will learn that she had a passion for journalism. In fact, she attended more RTNDA conventions than most of you, once bringing fellow actress BARBARA BILLINGSLEY with her. Lockhart was one of three actresses to play the mom in the classic TV show Lassie. She also starred in Lost in Space among other roles. June Lockhart was 100 years old.

Names in the News (and other stuff):

DAVID HATCHER has been promoted to Assistant News Director at Nexstar’s WPIX-TV (CW) in New York. Here’s the memo from ND BEN DOBSON.

When in trouble, name a task force! That’s what Indiana University did this week after an outcry over what some saw as an improper move to force the student newspaper, The Indiana Daily Student, to stop publishing a print edition. More from The Indianapolis Star (may be behind a paywall).

Busiek

Longtime Des Moines news director (and one time RTNDA leader) DAVE BUSIEK and I were among about 20 members of the University of Missouri’s Broadcasting class of 1975 to enjoy a reunion in Columbia this weekend. One of the activities was a presentation by Dean DAVID KURPIUS on how the school is handling the current environment. Dave (Busiek) offers his thoughts about the presentation.

General Manager News and Notes:

Samuels

Longtime Rochester, NY, broadcaster CHUCK SAMUELS is headed towards retirement. Chuck’s been the General Manager for WHAM-TV for 19 years and that long stretch followed ten years as news director. Chuck sent along the note he sent to his staff, and we also have his post on LinkedIn. Chuck plans to return to Florida after he leaves this ABC affiliate next month.

Gray Media tabbed veteran Mississippi broadcaster JON POLLARD to be the next GM for WTOK-TV, its ABC affiliate in Meridian, MS.

Names in the News (and other stuff):

Our Wednesday UPDATE brought you first word of the ‘suspension’ of the annual RTDNA Convention in lieu of a series of smaller gatherings with partner organizations, called the RTDNA World tour. If you missed that UPDATE, you can find it here (where we’ve corrected our egregious error where we listed the wrong year for the 9/11 attack). Our UPDATE did catch the eye of long time ND turned blogger KIRK VARNER who explored the topic in more detail.

Quite the mess this week at the once well-regarded Media School (aka Journalism School) at Indiana University in Bloomington. A dispute over whether the student newspaper could include ‘news’ in one of the seven print additions it published blew up.

Here’s a good overview of the situation from Poynter, from the head of the Indianapolis Press Club Foundation, and another from The New York Times, all written before this remarkable development this weekend.

You know it’s bad when famous IU alum MARK CUBAN craps on his alma mater.

DAVID CUSTER, a former anchor at Gray’s WNEM-TV in Saginaw, MI, won a retaliation lawsuit against the station. Details here.

Csanyi-Salcedo

Veteran newsman ZOLTAN CSANYI SALCEDO returns to radio (a full circle move, he says in this article from Media Moves) as news director and morning anchor at News Radio KKOB-AM/FM in Albuquerque. He’s spent the last six years as news director for KGRV-TV in Weslaco, TX, one of many stops during his long career.

At Tegna’s WGRZ-TV in Buffalo, KELSEY KAUFMANN has been promoted to Assistant ND from her EP role there.

General Manager News and Notes:

No GM changes to my knowledge this week.

October 12, 2025

Wednesday, October 15, 2025 UPDATE:

It’s the end of another era.

RTDNA is suspending its annual convention, and says it is unlikely to return.

With the exception of 2001 (cancelled due to 9/11) it’s been an annual event since 1946.

Before 2021, it was THE place to network and learn. The convention floor was huge, with helicopters, satellite trucks, newsroom computers, cameras, editing and other gear.

Attendance was well over 1,000 people.

Each of the (then) Big Three networks entertained in hospitality suites.

But the fallout from the missed 2001 convention…and the many changes in the industry…has changed everything.

RTDNA teamed with NAB for ten years, then SPJ. Both partnerships ended.

The attendance at June’s convention in New Orleans was just 180, and that was buttressed by last minute free registration to members in Louisiana.

RTDNA says it will replace the annual convention with a variety of smaller events around the country and the world, often partnering with other journalism groups like NAB, IRE, ONA, NAHJ, NLGJA, etc.

Many more details and the schedule can be found here.

There’s also a FAQ page on that website, and one of the questions addresses what I am sure is top of mind for you.

We hope to have more on this story in our full newsletter this weekend.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Greetings:

It’s been a fairly slow week, with just ONE news director change as a Michigan ND moves across state.

Our count of open ND jobs stands at 25.

We’re re-running an ad for a new book from a veteran ND with one small clarification. WAYNE LYNCH’s new book is NOT non-fiction. You probably figured that out when you read it involves vampires.

We have an obituary and a story about the death of a former Little Rock GM and station owner. He bought the station with a friend who later bought the Dallas Cowboys. But his self-written obituary neglected to mention his conviction on federal charges involving visa irregularities and his two mistresses.

There’s also an obituary for a Poynter business media reporter.

TWO new GMs…one involving a promotion within Nexstar to a top ten market, while the other is an ND who is assuming GM duties as well.

And TWO items in Names in the News this week. ONE is the choice of a new editor in Chief for CBS News, and the other because it happened about a mile from my house.

Read on!

Newly Named News Director:

Blanton

WJBK-TV, Detroit, MI…you learned in Tuesday’s UPDATE that BROOKS BLANTON has been named VP/News Director for this FOX o-and-o. Brooks has been the ND for Tgna’s WZZM-TV in Grand Rapids for the last 3 1/2 years. He replaces LAURA MOORE who left the station after 27 years of service…two as ND..when new GM PAUL McGONAGLE was named.

New News Director Opening:

WZZM-TV, Grand Rapids, MI…you learned about that BROOKS BLANTON is headed east on I-96 to become ND at FOX o-and-o WJBK-TV.Brooks was ND for this Tegna owned ABC affiliate for 3 1/2 years…and has, of course, other career stops.

Paid Ad:

BLOOD STAINED PAPERS – A new book by Wayne Lynch

Wayne Lynch, a reader of this site, a friend and longtime broadcast and regional cable news director has written his first fiction novel, a Halloween thriller.

It’s about an aggressive TV reporter recruited by a secret society of vampire hunters to save three print reporters infected by a centuries-old demon.

The story mixes real-time crimes with abundant fantasy horror in a mid 1970s East Coast city where he actually worked. It features location photos to weave a tale of terror, where only love can save the reporters’ humanity and their futures, but only after a violent death match between two vampire rivals.

It’s called Blood Stained Papers, available as an eBook at the Amazon Kindle Store.

Obituaries:

Jones

DAVID JONES, a onetime owner and GM of Little Rock’s KARK-TV died in September. He was 94. Jones bought KARK with partners, including close friend JERRY JONES, now owner of the Dallas Cowboys (and presumably NOT a relative, despite the same last name). He also is credited with improving ambulance services in Little Rock. David wrote his own obituary but neglected one critical part of his life mentioned in this story…involving his Chinese mistresses.

RICK EDMONDS, whose byline you might recognize if you read his coverage of the business of media on the Poynter website, died last week of injuries suffered in a car accident. He was 78.

Names in the News (and other stuff):

Weiss

You likely heard about BARI WEISS’s appointment as Editor in Chief of CBS News. This Associated Press article tries to explain why that appointment has caused so much controversy.

Sanchez

And in a story many of you have asked me about (since the original incident happened about a mile from my home), Fox Sports analyst MARK SANCHEZ was released from a local hospital today. You likely know he was involved in an altercation with a truck driver in downtown Indianapolis last weekend. He’s facing several charges, including felony battery. Reporter RUSS McQUAID from Nexstar’s CBS/FOX duopoly was at the Criminal Justice Center this morning when Sanchez was booked and scored this exclusive interview.

General Manager News and Notes:

Wholey

PATRICK WHOLEY gets a big promotion as he’ll be the next general manager for Nexstar’s WDVM/WDCW-TV (Independent/CW) in Washington, DC. He’s spent the last 12 years (of his 23 years there) as general manager for Nexstar’s WPRI-TV (ABC) in Providence, RI. You’ll learn in this story that he has a sales background. Patrick’s complete career history is on his Linkedin page.

Harsha

And congratulations to KEEGAN HARSHA, who has been named General Manager and Senior Director of News for Scripps’ KTVQ-TV (ABC) in Billings, MT. It’s another example of Scripps having GMs also serve as a department head. He’s currently Senior Director of News for The Montana News Network, which includes Scripps stations in EVERY city in Montana I’ve ever heard of…and some I have not. 🙂
