Thursday, September 11, 2025 UPDATE:

Greetings:

TWO retirements of veteran broadcasters at the same station to share, including one who’s been an ND in more stations than many of you have ever set foot in.

Evans

The end of the year brings TWO departures at WPSD-TV in Paducah, KY: VP/GM BILL EVANS is stepping down after 28 years at WPSD, where he began as news director in 1997, moved to GM in January, 2018 and in October, 2018 became President of the West Kentucky Media Group where he also serves as Publisher of the co-owned Paducah Sun. Bill’s Linkedin page tells all, And here’s the note he sent to his staff today.

Boxx

And some of you may have crossed paths over the years with PERRY BOXX, who’s been ND here since March, 2018. When he leaves in December, his almost eight year tenure will be the longest of his 13 news director jobs. They’re all listed here.

Please read the note he sent to his staff. Perhaps you can share it with younger journalists.

At the end of his note, he shares that “Hero and I wish all of you the very best.” If you are wondering who’s Hero, this heartwarming story will answer that question.

Friends can wish Perry well via an email sent here.

We’ll have a very full newsletter this weekend.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Wednesday, September 10, 2025 UPDATE #2:

Greetings:

A news director change in the number three market prompts our second UPDATE of the day.

O’Heir

WFLD-TV, Chicago, IL…SEAN O’HEIR will be the next news director at this FOX o-and-o. He’s currently the Vice President of Programming and Development at WFLD. His background is atypical for a news director. It’s detailed here on his Linkedin page.

He replaces GLEN DACY who, according to a FOX spokesperson, has decided to move on after just one year as news director.

Another busy week. We’ll recap it all Sunday, or sooner if developments warrant.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Wednesday, September 10, 2025 UPDATE:

Greetings

A busy day with THREE top 25 news director jobs filled, including TWO at Tegna.

Frame

KING-TV, Seattle, WA…a longtime reporter gets the ND promotion here. SUSANNAH FRAME moves to the corner office after almost 34 years at this Tegna/NBC affiliate, where her current title is Chief Investigative Reporter and Head of Journalism Development. Her impressive and lengthy background is here. She replaces JULIE WOLFE who was promoted to VP/Content for Tegna’s West region and sent out this note on Susannah’s promotion.

Geraghty

KSDK-TV, St. Louis, MO…TIM GERAGHTY returns to Missouri as the next ND for this Tegna owned NBC affiliate. We told you last week that Tim was leaving Sinclair’s WKRC-TV (CBS) in Cincinnati 10 years. Here’s the announcement from GM ALICIA ELSNER. Tim replaces MORGAN SCHAAB, whose was Director of Content and ART HOLLIDAY, who was ND. (The station will not have a Director of Content). Morgan left the station in July after 18 months and Art retired after 46 years in a variety of roles. Tim’s a Missouri grad and has held several ND jobs.

Facey

WISH-TV, Indianapolis, IN…ERICA FACEY has been promoted to news director for this Circle City Broadcasting owned CW affiliate. She’s been the Assistant ND there. Here’s the story from the station’s web site. which incudes the other stops in her career. Erica replaces VP/News and News Director AL CARL. We told you Sunday that Al’s job had been eliminated after ten years. He was one of about 20 employees who have left the station in the last week or two, many due to a new non-compete addendum to contracts.

We’ll be back Sunday, or sooner if developments warrant.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Greetings:

FOUR new openings this week, including a top 25 market station which eliminated the job of VP/News and News Director. With THREE people hired to new jobs, our count of stations with ND openings increases ever so slightly to 31.

In our Names in the News (and other stuff) section, CBS makes what seems like an odd journalism decision. We have a profile of a 93 year old former Houston ND who is still chasing stories (though you will know him better from another job). And there’s some news people with new jobs.

There’s ONE obituary for a longtime CBS affiliate relations director.

And we have THREE retirements among the GM (or former GM) ranks.

Those stories and more as you read on.

Newly Named News Directors:

Cartwright

WBZ-TV, Boston, MA…Thursday’s UPDATE told you that ROB CARTWRIGHT will be the next VicePresident/News for this CBS o-and-o. Rob’s spent the last 12 years in Austin, TX, as ND for Sinclair’s KEYE-TV (CBS). He’s also been a news director in Syracuse and has worked in Dallas (twice), Washington and San Antonio. He replaces GERARDO LOPEZ who left in April after 2 1/2 years as news director.

Kummer

KARE-TV, Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN…we told you Monday via an UPDATE that MATT KUMMER is returning to the Twin Cities as ND for this Tegna owned NBC affiliate. New this edition: Matt’s post on Linkedin about his move. Matt’s a former EP at WCCO-TV in MSP before moving on to other ND jobs in Green Bay (WBAY-TV) and Knoxville (WVLT-TV).

Matt replaces STACEY NOGY. We told you back in May that Stacey would be leaving the station in September. She’s been ND here for seven years and worked at the station for 32 years. Friday was her last day and the station celebrated her career with this story.

KTLM-TV, McAllen, TX…NOEL RAMOS is moving within Telemundo to become the next ND here. He’s been the Assistant ND at KMTD-TV, the Telemundo owned station in Houston.

New News Director Openings:

Carl

WISH-TV, Indianapolis, IN…VP/News & ND AL CARL has left this Circle City Broadcasting owned CW affiliate. In this email, Al told me his job was eliminated. He’s been here for more than nine years, and is a former ND in multiple markets. His is not the only recent departure: According to this story in the Indianapolis Star, eleven employees have left after refusing to sign a non-compete addendum to their contracts.

KEYE-TV, Austin, TX…ROB CARTWRIGHT has been named VP/News for CBS o-and-o WBZ-TV in Boston. But you already know that because we reported Rob’s move above.

Geraghty

WKRC-TV, Cincinnati, OH…it was a busy week for updates. Our third of the week involved TIM GERAGHTY’s departure after more than ten years running the news department for this Sinclair owned CBS affiliate. Tim told me that he would share his next job soon, and we’ll pass it along when he does. Veteran Cincinnati media writer JOHN KIESEWETTER reviewed Tim’s time there. Tim’s career history is here.

WAVE-TV, Louisville, KY…you learned above that MATT KUMMER is leaving this Gray Media owned NBC affiliate to be the next ND for KARE-TV, Tegna’s NBC affiliate in Minneapolis. Matt was here for just over two years.

Obituary:

Young

We just learned this week that GED YOUNG, who worked for CBS for many years in affiliate relations, died June 26th. He was 75 years old. This obituary has limited information, but you’ll see some familiar names if you click on the tribute wall. Ged, I believe, began his career at WTRF-TV in Wheeling, WV, before spending more than 30 years at CBS, ending his time there as Director of Affiliate relations.

Names in the News (and other stuff):

CBS News continues to make, shall we say, some interesting decisions about its journalism. The latest: interviews that air on Face the Nation will air in their entirety and not be edited at all. More from The New York Times and The Washington Post.

The New York Times reported this story about a former KHOU-TV (Houston) News Director who continues to chase stories at the age of 93! And while he was, in fact, once the ND at KHOU, you may know him better by another job: Anchor of the CBS Evening News.

While we’re on the subject of CBS, KIM HARVEY is the new executive producer of the CBS Evening News.

And while we’re talking about networks, NOREEN GILLESPIE joins NBC News as its ombudsman, while at ABC News, KATIE den DAAS is the new SVP of global news gathering.

DANIELLE WILBURN stays within Hearst but moves cross country to become the Assistant ND at WYFF-TV in Greenville, SC. She’s been an EP at Hearst’s KCRA-TV in Sacramento.

Also moving, but a far shorter distance, is JASON VAN HORN. He joins KQDS-TV in Duluth, MN as its next Managing Editor. Jason had previously been a Digital Content Producer at KBJR-TV in Duluth.

General Manager News and Notes:

Three General Manager retirements of note.

Stokes

GARY STOKES will retire as GM at the end of the year from KSPS-TV (PBS) in Spokane, WA. Gary’s a former GM for WVTM-TV in Birmingham and was the news director at WAVY-TV in Norfolk.

DANNY AGUILAR, who’s been a GM in several Texas markets, is retiring this month from Morgan-Murphy’s operations in Victoria, TX.

Former news director turned general manger turned CEO of Visit Fargo-Morehead CHARLEY JOHNSON, is retiring at the age of 75. Charlie anchored at KVLY-TV in Fargo, and was ND and GM there before taking the tourism gig 13 years ago.

August 31, 2025

Friday, September 5, 2025 UPDATE:

A veteran news director is moving on…but we won’t know his new destination for a few days.

Geraghty

After more than ten years as news director here, TIM GERAGHTY will leave Sinclair’s WKRC-TV (CBS) in Cincinnati later this month. Tim told me in an email this morning that he should be able to announce his new job next week. Cincinnati media writer JOHN KIESEWETTER adds this perspective. Tim’s been a news director in a number of other markets as you’ll learn in his Linkedin profile.

It’s been a busy week, with THREE updates (so far!) We’ll see you this weekend with those stories and many more.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Thursday, September 4, 2025 UPDATE:

Greetings:

For the second time this week, a large market news director job is filled, and this one is at a CBS o-and-o.

Cartwright

ROB CARTWRIGHT joins CBS’s WBZ-TV in Boston as its next Vice President of News. More in this news release. He’s been the ND for Sinclair’s KEYE-TV (CBS) in Austin, TX, since 2014. Rob’s also been an ND in Syracuse (WSYR-TV) and has worked in Dallas (two stations), Washington, and San Antonio. At WBZ, he replaces GERARDO LOPEZ who left way back in April after 2 1/2 years as ND.

We’ll see you this weekend with our full report.

Monday. September 1, 2025 UPDATE:

Greetings:

A large market ND job is filled, and we have an UPDATE to a story from last night’s newsletter.

Kummer

KARE-TV (Tegna/NBC) in Minneapolis has named MATT KUMMER as its next news director. Matt is currently the ND for Gray’s WAVE-TV (NBC) in Louisville and earlier had been the ND for Gray’s WVLT-TV in Knoxville. He also was ND at WBAY-TV in Green Bay for 10+ years. It’s a return to the Twin Cities for Matt, who earlier in his career was an EP at WCCO-TV (CBS owned). He replaces STACEY NOGY who announced in May she would leave in September after 32 years at KARE and seven as ND.

Clarifying a story from this weekend’s full newsletter. CRAIG HUME, the new ND at Gray’s KOSA-TV in Odessa, will replace BRELEE McCLELLAND as ND there. She left in June after just over a year. We incorrectly told you that the job had been vacant for more than a year.

Have a great holiday.

regards,

Rick Gevers

**** ***** ****

Greetings:

Hope you’re enjoying a nice holiday weekend.

It’s been a nice week for THREE people who got new ND jobs. With ONE new opening, our count of stations with ND openings snow stands at 30.

FOX continues a trend I never thought I’d see: assigning one person to oversee stations in two (large!) markets. That story…and the retirement of a GM of a blowtorch station in a top five market, are in our GM news segment.

We have THREE obituaries. TWO are of longtime former White House correspondents, while the other is for the sports director of the University of Missouri’s KOMU-TV, where he helped train many students now working all over the country.

Finally, I certainly don’t want to put ideas into anyone’s mind, but we have a story about a station which aired a 10:00 newscast with a grand total of TWO people in the building.

TWO. Dos. Deux. Zwei.

That’s in Names in the News, along with a new job for former Phoenix ND.

Read on!

Newly Named News Directors:

Lopez

WSLS-TV, Roanoke, VA…MIKE LOPEZ will be the next news director for the Graham Media owned NBC affiliate. It’s his third ND job following stints in Rock Island and Eau Claire. He’s been the Assistant ND for Nexstar’s Indianapolis duopoly, WTTV/WXIN-TV and posted about his new job here. At WSLS, he replaces SCOTT FLANNIGAN who left in June and is now Senior ND for Houston Public Media.

Hume

KOSA-TV, Odessa, TX…veteran ND CRAIG HUME returns to the big chair as he takes over at this Gray Media owned CBS affiliate. Craig most recently worked for Nexstar in Las Vegas in a business development role, but he’s been an ND in markets large (i.e.Los Angeles and Chicago) and small. All his jobs are detailed on his Linkedin page. At KOSA, he replaces BRELEE McCLELLAND who left in June after just over a year as ND.

KOTA-TV, Rapid City, SD…another Gray station, another new ND. Here it’s MATT CHIBE who’s been the Assistant ND for Standard Media’s KLKN-TVin Lincoln, NE. He’s also worked in Salt Lake City, Portland, OR, Orlando, and a whole lot of other places. He replaces JEN BLAKE who left in March to transfer to Gray’s WMBF-TV in Myrtle Beach as ND.

New News Director Openings:

Caron

WBTW-TV, Myrtle Beach, SC…PAUL CARON will leave this Nexstar owned CBS affiliate later this month after three years as news director. That followed a three year run as ND for Nexstar’s WHNT-TV (also a CBS affiliate) in Huntsville, AL. Paul spent much of his career in Atlanta at (what was then CBS affiliate) WGCL-TV (now independent WANF-TV) and CNN, where he worked for 30 years.

Obituaries:

Arnet

BEN ARNET, the sports director for the University of Missouri owned KOMU-TV (NBC) in Columbia, MO, died suddenly Thursday at the age of 43, just hours before Missouri opened its football season. Ben held that role over five years, working with students who are now in jobs around the country. KOMU reported on its loss here, while he was remembered in this post from the Athletic Department, where he had once worked.

Two longtime White House correspondents have died.

CHARLES BIERBAUER‘s family announced his death today. He worked for CNN for two decades before retiring in 2021.

And MARK KNOLLER covered the White House for CBS News, mostly in radio, with an occasional appearance on TV. He was known for his meticulous record keeping, information he gladly shared with others, even competitors. Mark was 73 when he died this week.

Names in the News (and other stuff):

Busiek

Somewhere there’s a corporate bean counter who will be excited to read DAVE BUSIEK’s latest Substack post. Dave, a longtime Des Moines ND, is not happy about a small market station which aired a 10:00 newscast with a total of TWO people in the building: ONE director and ONE person who served as anchor/producer/sports anchor/and sports photographer.

Kline

Former Phoenix ND (KNXV-TV) CHRIS KLINE, who’s been working as President/CEO of the Arizona Media Association, takes a new job as President and CEO of the Desert Botanical Garden.

General Manager News and Notes:

Eikel

More big changes on the General Manager level at FOX owned stations. AMBER EIKEL will now oversee o-and-o’s in both Los Angeles and San Francisco/Oakland (where she was once ND). MICHAEL LEWIS will run the owned stations in both Seattle and Phoenix, where he’s been GM for KSAZ-TV since 2022. And MELLYNDA HARTEL is retiring after seven years as GM of KTVU-TV in Oakland. Confused? I am! It’s all explained in this news release.

BERNIE PRAZENICA, who’s been GM of Philly blowtorch WPVI-TV for 19 years, is retiring at the end of the year..

Greetings:

A fairly slow week, with just ONE news director change as an opening is filled in Buffalo.

With that change, there are now 32 stations looking for a news director.

TWO general manager changes: an opening at a CBS o-and-o in Dallas, while Tegna fills an opening in Indianapolis with an internal promotion.

Unless you were doing a Rip Van Winkle impersonation, you’re already aware of the Nexstar/Tegna deal. But not so fast…says AL TOMPKINS. His thoughts are in Names in the News.

Also in Names in the News, more nervous staffers at CBS News, a veteran broadcaster urges local stations to consider a relatively rare partnership, a ND celebrates a milestone by ringing a bell, and more.

Hartman

Finally, an ‘above the fold’ (newspaper term, sorry) shout out to CBS’s STEVE HARTMAN who tackled a passion project without first alerting his bosses, though it did turn into a Sunday Morning piece. Now, his story about the untouched bedrooms of school shooting victims has been made into a film, a traveling exhibit, and a 60 Minutes segment later this year. AL TOMPKINS talked with Steve about the project.

If you missed the Sunday Morning story, it is well worth your time.

Newly Named News Directors:

Moore

WGRZ-TV, Buffalo, NY…JUDY MOORE has been promoted to news director of this Tegna owned NBC affiliate. It’s been a quick rise up the ladder at WGRZ for Judy, who joined in October 2023 as EP, moved to Assistant ND a year later, and now is the ND. Judy replaces JEREMY SETTLE who left earlier this summer to be ND at Tegna’s WTSP-TV (ABC) in Tampa-St. Petersburg. Of note: Judy’s dad worked for 35 years at WGRZ on the photojournalism staff.

Names in the News (and other stuff):

The big story of the week was the Nexstar-Tegna deal. In the unlikely event you missed it, here’s the Nexstar news release. Since it was so widely reported, I passed on an UPDATE until I found something that added valuable perspective, and I think this column from AL TOMPKINS offers that perspective. Al points out that lots could happen before this a done deal.

Variety reports that staffers at CBS News are worried about more potential layoffs under new management AND a possible tweaking of the format of the just reformatted CBS Evening News.

Veteran broadcaster EMILY BARR suggests that local TV stations would be well served in linking up with local non-profit journalism sites to improve news content.

Julie M.

Congratulations to WBAY-TV (Green Bay) News Director JULIE MORAVCHIK who rang the bell at a local cancer treatment center this week, signaling the end of her chemotherapy sessions. We shared with you earlier this year that Julie had gone public with her diagnosis in hopes of raising awareness for other women.

VICKIE BINKLEY gets a promotion at Nexstar’s Indianapolis duopoly, WTTV/WXIN-TV (CBS/FOX). She’s now the Assistant ND there, moving up from Director of Digital Content. Vicki, a nine year veteran of the station in her home market, shared the news on her Linkedin page.

And another Nexstar move finds SEAN O’DONNELL moving to KLAS-TV (CBS) in Las Vegas as Digital Director. He’s spent the five years as EP of Digital for the company’s KDVR/KWGN-TV in Denver.

General Manager News and Notes:

TWO General Manager changes this week.

Houston blogger MIKE McGUFF (who covers other Texas markets, too) shares that RAQUEL AMPERO is leaving CBS owned KTVT/KTXA-TV in Dallas after four years as GM.

And Tegna has promoted BRETT DENNY to General Manager of its Indianapolis NBC affiliate, WTHR-TV. An eleven year veteran of the station, he most recently has been director of sales.

August 17, 2025

Greetings:

As you know from the FOUR UPDATES this week, there’s a lot going on, and not just ND changes, though there are FOUR new news directors to report, with TWO new openings.

My count shows there are now 33 stations looking for a news director.

We have ONE Paid Help Wanted ad this week, that for an Senior Producer opening at WRAL-TV in Raleigh.

And there’s an ad for Sciline which is offering a briefing on EPA changes.

One GM change as an Orlando station reverses course and will now HAVE a GM after saying it would run without one.

The National Edward R. Murrow award winners were named this week. We have the list. That’s in Names in the News, along with changes in how some Scripps stations are managed…and more.

Also in Names in the News, a fun read about The Ed Sullivan Theatre: it’s past and future, and its role in helping to integrate the airwaves when Ed Sullivan hosted his show there.

Finally, lots of readers reacted to the (to be polite) lengthy Sinclair news release about its future plans. (You remember, the one with a sentence that ran 203 words?). A tip of the hat to a loyal reader who suggested it could have been reduced to this:

We may buy some stuff. We may sell some stuff. We may partner with another company to buy some stuff.

Lots more as you read on.

Newly Named News Directors:

Harrison

WGN-TV, Chicago, IL…it was a busy week for UPDATES. Tuesday’s (the second of FOUR last week) brought news that AKEMI HARRISON was moving across town to be Director of News and Multiplatform Content for this Nexstar owned CW station. She had been the ND for NBC’s WMAQ-TV for the last 2+ years after 12 years as ND there. More here. At WGN, Akemi replaces DOMINIC STASI who left in May after five years as ND and 12 years at the station.

Carmean

WTTG/WDCA-TV, Washington, DC…our THIRD update last week reported the promotion of KYLE CARMEAN to be Vice President of News and Content for this FOX o-and-. He’s been the Assistant ND for eleven years, most (if not all) of that time working with ND PAUL McGONAGLE who left in July when he was upped to General Manager for Fox’s Detroit owned station, WJBK-TV.

Spessard

WXIA-TV, Atlanta, GA..Monday’s first UPDATE shared that TODD SPESSARD was moving within Tegna to become Director of Content for this NBC affiliate. Todd’s been the ND at sister Tegna NBC affiliate WCNC-TV in Charlotte for the last 18 months. Todd’s been an ND in several markets, and once worked for me as a producer at WOOD-TV (NBC) in Grand Rapids. He replaces CAROL FOWLER who was promoted to VP of Content for Tegna, overseeing several stations in the region.

Fargen

WMTV, Madison, WI…BRIDGET FARGEN moves within Gray Media as the next ND for this NBC affiliate. Bridget is a Wisconsin native who has spent the last five years as ND for Gray’s WSAW-TV, the CBS affiliate in Wausau, WI. At WMTV, she replaces JESSICA LASZEWSKI who moves, ironically, to Bridget’s soon-to be former station, WSAW, where Jessica will be the general manager.

New News Director Openings:

WCNC-TV, Charlotte, NC…you learned above that TODD SPESSARD is leaving one Tegna owned NBC affiliate for another. He’ll going to WXIA-TV in Atlanta as Director of Content.

WSAW-TV, Wausau, WI…you also learned above that BRIDGET FARGEN is moving within Gray to become ND for WMTV in Madison.

Obituaries:

Schurz

FRANKLIN DUNN (Frank) SCHURZ, the longtime head of Schurz Communications, died last Sunday at the age of 94. Schurz Communications owned TV, radio and newspapers for many years, but now is primarily a broadband services company. Schurz announced in 2015 it was getting out of broadcasting, and sold most of its stations to Gray. This Wikipedia page outlines its history.

Schwall

A radio reporter turned hard news television reporter turned news director turned feature reporter died Thursday. KEN SCHWALL was a fixture on WBIR-TV in Knoxville for decades, two years of which were spent at the station’s news director. WBIR remembered him in this story, while The Knoxville News-Sentinel recapped his career in this report.

Rickey

DAVE RICKEY, a long ago news manager at WSFA-TV (NBC) in Montgomery, AL, died Wednesday after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. He was 69. Dave joined WFSA as a reporter after graduating from the University of Missouri, where he worked at KOMU-TV. At WSFA, he rose through the ranks to Assistant ND before leaving the station and starting a long career in public relations.

Names in the News (and other stuff):

Congratulations to KING-TV in Seattle and WTVR-TV in Richmond, VA, who won the large and small market Edward R. Murrow Awards for Overall Excellence. RTNDA announced winners of the national awards this week. The complete list is here. Congratulations, too, to my former intern and employee STEVE HARTMAN of CBS News, who won (another) National Murrow for Writing.

CBS has a new home in Atlanta as its owned WUPA-TV (channel 69) began airing CBS programming yesterday, replacing Gray’s WANF-TV. As part of the change, the station made a number of hires as it builds out its news department for a September launch.

Thursday’s fourth UPDATE of the week relayed details of Scripps’ plan to expand his model of having GM’s also serve as department heads. Many of these positions held the title of Station Manager, but now most will be called GM/Department head. This email to employees explains some exceptions and details nine markets where changes were made, costing some employees their jobs.

Benedict

COLIN BENEDICT, who’s been with Morgan Murphy for 37 years, including a stint as ND at WISC-TV in Madison, is one of three company executives who’ve been promoted. Colin becomes Chief Innovation Officer.

And while we rarely stray from stories of television news and management, I though you would enjoy this Hollywood Reporter story  about the past (and future) of The Ed Sullivan Theatre in New York once The Late Show with Stephen Colbert signs off next year. I did not know of the significant role ED SULLIVAN played in integrating the airwaves. It’s worth a moment of your time.

General Manager News and Notes:

Jones

A change in philosophy at Graham Media means AUTUMN JONES will serve as both GM and News Director at WKMG-TV (CBS) in Orlando. When JEFF HOFFMAN left the station as General Manager earlier this year, the company said it would not replaces him, and that department heads would report to their corporate overloads. Well, that didn’t last long as you’ll read here.
