November 16, 2025

Greetings:

It’s rare week with NO changes in the ND ranks, but we do have other news of note.

Our list of open ND jobs remains at 26.

TWO of those openings are featured in Paid Help Wanted ads.

We have TWO obituaries. One’s for a legendary Kentucky broadcaster, the other a long ago set designer who worked for CBS News, CBS Sports, and later had his own company that did sets for local stations.

In Names in the News:

  • Is CBS going to disband its Standards and Practices Unit?
  • New moves in a lawsuit by a former ND against his former station.
  • A Kansas County writes a check and apologies after a raid on a newspaper.
  • And a number of news managers on the move.

There’s ONE GM announcement as Scripps makes a promotion to fill one of its combo GM/Department Head positions.

All that…and more…below.

Newly Named News Directors:

To the best of my knowledge, there are NO new news directors this week. Always happy to be corrected if I missed something. You can email me at: rick@rickgevers.com

News Director, WISC-TV, Madison, WI:

Here is your chance to TRULY make a change.

Only a handful of people have had this role over the last 5 decades. But this is not the same opening as before. We are looking for someone to break the mold and connect with local consumers in a new way. We produce 40 hours of linear television news a week but more importantly we are transitioning to a new era of news gathering and multi-platform content creation from all parts of the operation.

The right candidate will have a proven track record of audience/consumer growth and understand how to achieve success in both current and emerging platforms.

In this role, you’ll be asked to set and execute a strategy for this next generation content-focused editorial team. You’ll lead transformational efforts and build a top-notch staff. You’ll need to be aggressively moving resources to meet the demand of a shifting content consumption marketplace. You’ll be asked to make critical editorial decisions with a deep understanding of journalism ethics.

You’ll be asked to inspire.

Our company has been in the journalism business since 1890…however, that long history is not our calling card…it is all about the future.

Obituaries:

Legendary WPSD-TV (Paducah, KY) General Manager JOHN WILLIAMS died last Monday. He was 83. During his 34 years there, he worked in almost every department and spent 20 years as GM. The station paid him tribute here.

HUGH RAISKY died at the end of October. He was 92 and spent much of his career as a set designer for CBS News and CBS Sports, including a special seat for coverage of the first moon landing. This obituary says that set “set” the standard. He later opened his own company, designing sets for local stations.

Names in the News (and other stuff):

The Independent says new CBS Editor-in-Chief BARI WEISS wants to gut…or even disband…the standards and practices unit at CBS News. Sources told the publication that she thinks the unit has ‘too much power. The entire story is here.

Tang

There’s a new development in the legal case involving former WOOD-TV (NBC), Grand Rapids, MI, News Director STANTON TANG. He’s suing station owner Nexstar Media Group for defamation and wrongful termination. The federal judge assigned to the case ordered both parties to hold a settlement conference next month. That’s typically done to avoid a costly trial.

Ashlin C.

ASHLIN COSENTINO has been promoted to Assistant News Director from an EP role at Scripps WFTS-TV in Tampa/St. Petersburg, FL. Here’s the memo from News Director SARAH MOORE. Ashlin has also worked at two different stations in Pennsylvania.

Also in Florida, SAMUEL GARDNER III will be the new Managing Editor for WFTV (Cox Media/ABC) in Orlando. He’s leaving a similar job at CBS o-and-o KTVT-TV in Dallas/Ft. Worth. Samuel has also worked in Philadelphia and for CNN.

Ennis

Longtime newsperson DAWN ENNIS joins Graham Media’s WSLS-TV (NBC) in Roanoke, VA, as a multiplatform executive producer. It’s a return to Graham (formerly Post-Newsweek) for Dawn following an earlier stint as an EP at the company’s WJXT-TV (now independent) in Jacksonville, FL. More in this post on Linkedin.

In a win for First Amendment advocates, Marion County, Kansas, has agreed to pay more than $3,000,000 and issue an apology to the Marion County Record newspaper. That follows a 2023 raid on the paper in which equipment and documents were seized.

General Manager News and Notes:

Scripps filled its open GM/Department head position at KRIS-TV (NBC) in Corpus Christi, TX. KRISTEN DARDEN has been the local sales manager there. In her new role, she will be GM and Director of Sales. Here’s the announcement from Regional VP ANITA HELT.
