February 23, 2013

Greetings:

Just  ONE  new news director opening in our report this week, an opening created when a veteran ND moved up within the FOX station group. And that’s one of  TWO  newly hired NDs, bringing out list of open positions to 24.

We have a paid ad for one of those openings, along with ads for EP openings, a Managing Editor opening, and a producer opening for a strong station in a top ten market.

Are you and your station interested (and available) for an international partnership? One that’s all expenses paid? Click on the ad below and let ’em know via email…they’ll mail you the information.

We have a new person in our free Situations Wanted segment, and, oddly, no new Names in the News this week. Remember to send me your items!

Read on for the rest of this week’s report.

New News Director Opening:

KRIV-TV, Houston, TX…we told you earlier this week that TOM DOERR is leaving one FOX o-and-o for another. More on that below.

And while not a new opening, please note the help wanted ad below for the ND position at WVVA-TV in Bluefield, WV.

He’s also been a Station Manager in Miami and worked as a consultant for AR&D.  At WFLD, he becomes the fourth ND in the last 4+ years as he replaces PHYLLIS SCHWARTZ who left the station in December after less than a year on the job.

Roach

WXIX-TV, Cincinnati, OH…KEVIN ROACH returns to a newsroom as ND for this Raycom owned FOX affiliate. He’s twice been an ND for the same station in Dayton (WDTN-TV), has been an assistant ND in Cincinnati, an EP in Hartford and for NECN in Boston, and has worked for Internet Broadcasting and LexisNexis.  Most recently he was VP/Director of Broadcast News for the AP. Sunday, February 17, 2013 UPDATE:

A memorial service may be held at a later date for JEFF RAKER, the News Director of WTVY-TV in Dothan, AL.  We told you earlier that Jeff collapsed on Friday and was pronounced dead at a local hospital.  He was 56.

A Dothan funeral home provided me with this obituary which includes memorial information.

Greetings:

Sadly, we begin this week with the obituary of a longtime news director.

Jeff Raker

JEFF RAKER, ND of WTVY-TV in Dothan, AL, collapsed at the station this morning and was pronounced dead at a local hospital. Jeff is survived by his wife, Darcy, and two children. I believe he was in his early 50’s.

Jeff was in his second stint as ND at this CBS affiliate, returning last April. He’d previously been the ND there from 1997-1999. He also served as a news director in Sioux City, IA, Youngstown, OH, and Jefferson City, MO. Jeff began his career as a photographer and worked in Charlotte, Las Vegas, Huntsville, Wichita, and Toledo.

As of this writing, funeral arrangements have not been released. When they are, I’ll update this space.

On to our normal business. This week, we have TWO new ND openings and THREE newly hired news directors. That brings our list of openings to 25.

We have an ad for one of those ND openings, as well as ads for management positions in Phoenix and on the East Coast.

In our free situations wanted column, a former newsman wants back into the business.

And in Names in the News, a new President of Local Broadcasting for a major group owner, a new news manager in Florida, and a longtime news director on the mend from surgery.

All that, and more, if you merely read on!

Carrie is currently the Assistant ND at WCNC-TV, Belo’s NBC affiliate in Charlotte. She’s been there for about two years, and previously spent more than 11 years at KMGH-TV in Denver in a variety of roles, including Assistant ND and Nightside EP. She’s also worked in Phoenix and Milwaukee.

At KSHB, she replaces PEGGY PHILLIP who left the station last August after more than 3 years as ND. She’s now working as the Morning EP for WPLG-TV in Miami. Carrie’s appointment comes one business day after WDAF-TV in KC named TRACY BROGDEN-MILLER to fill its vacant ND opening.

We’ll have all the week’s news in our regular report later this week.

Greetings:

This week’s report features THREE newly named news directors, one who returns to a newsroom from a short consulting career. And the ONLY new ND opening involves someone who himself had once been a consultant.

Those changes leave our list of open ND jobs at 25.

We have ads for one of those open ND jobs, as well as an ad for an EP opening in South Carolina . We also introduce a new service headed by a former news director that will help you with content and revenue, as well as a deadline extension for a major awards competition.

There are a number of management changes in our Names in the News section, details about another affiliation shuffle in one Indiana market, and we also have an obituary for a longtime Miami newsman.

That…and more…after this week’s changes:

New News Director Opening:

Perret

KTVX-TV, Salt Lake City, UT…LARRY PERRET has left this newly-purchased-by-Nexstar ABC affiliate after not quite two years as ND.  Larry’s a longtime newsman who’s been an ND in Los Angeles and St. Louis, and has worked for a total of five stations in Los Angeles as well as in Chicago, Boston, San Francisco, Denver, Greensboro, NC, and Colorado Springs, CO. Newly Named News Directors:

Angela replaces the station’s first ND, KEN WHITE, who will work on some projects for the company for the next few months. Ken was hired in 1999 to start the news department.

Brogden-Miller

WDAF-TV, Kansas City, MO…TRACY BROGDEN-MILLER starts Monday as the next ND for the LocalTV owned FOX affiliate. Tracy’s a former ND for KCTV in Kansas City who’s been consulting for SmithGeiger for the past 2+ years. She’s also been an ND in Boise, and has worked in Phoenix, Seattle, Sacramento and Tulsa. At WDAF, she replaces BRYAN McGRUDER who left the station in October after ten years as ND.

Wieder

WVEC-TV, Norfolk, VA…Executive Producer DOUG WIEDER is the new ND. Doug’s been the interim ND since RICH LEBENSON left the station in October after seven years as ND for this Belo-owned ABC affiliate. He also worked in Elmira, Huntsville, Nashville, and Detroit.

Situations Wanted:

No takers this week on our free Situations Wanted listing. If you’d like to state your case to a well targeted audience, email me an item (max. 100 words). You may include a link to a website, an email address, and a photo. You must include your name. I’ll run it for one week. I don’t represent or endorse those listed, but merely trying to help.

Names in the News:

JOHNNY GREEN, Jr., joins WCAU-TV in Philadelphia as Nightside EP. He’s been the Nightside and Special Projects EP for WPXI-TV in Pittsburgh. Johnny’s also worked in Florence, New Bern, Raleigh and Charlotte (two stations), where he worked with WCAU News Director ANZIO WILLIAMS.

Tampa’s WTVT-TV has promoted ROSHNI HANNON to be the EP of the morning news. She had been a producer there.

On the other side of the Sunshine State, WTLV/WJXX has named MARK FARRELL as its new morning EP. Mark had been the Assistant ND for KEYE-TV in Austin. And DIANA FOX has been named Digital Media Manager for this Gannett owned duopoly.

Congratulations to former WZTV (Nashville) News Director ROBERTA PETTERSON who joins WSMV-TV there as Executive Producer. Roberta spent 2 1/2 years as ND for WZTV before leaving the station last month.

JEREMY SETTLE joins News 12 New Jersey as Executive Producer. He’s been the Senior Producer for the Fox News Washington Bureau. Jeremy’s been an ND in Wilkes-Barre, an ND/anchor in Charlottesville, VA, and worked for two stations in Washington.

As I hope you know, I have a full time job as an agent for on-air newspeople. I’m not sure I can handle another full time job, which appears to be what it will take to track the FOX affiliation in Ft. Wayne. Recently I incorrectly told you that WFFT-TV was the FOX affiliate there. It used to be, when I said it was, it wasn’t, but now it will be again. Details here.

KEN TONNING is retiring as GM of Tampa’s WTSP-TV. He previously had been a GM for Gannett stations in Denver and Jacksonville, as well. His tenure in Tampa raised some eyebrows last year by adopting what some might call an advocacy position on some stories.

February 3, 2013

Greetings:

Lots to report in this week’s edition…something to read during the too long pre-game coverage.

While there is only ONE new ND opening, and THREE new NDs to introduce you to, there a lot of other items. One of those new NDs replaces a 45 year TV veteran.

Those changes leave our list of open ND jobs at 26.

We have a new ad for a Morning EP at a strong South Carolina station, and ads for two ND jobs.

Among many items in Names in the News, details about the departure of the President of NBC News and a top CNN executive, another veteran ND loses his job to a station consolidation, and FOX affiliates are concerned after the network notifies a longtime top 30 market affiliate that it will pull its affiliation when it closes on its purchase of two stations in that market.

And we have an obituary for one what reporter called the ‘nicest guy in TV news’.

All that…and more…after this week’s changes:

New News Director Opening:

KOVR-TV, Sacramento, CA…as we reported you to in an UPDATE earlier this week, CAMERYN BECK is headed to Phoenix as ND for KTVK-TV. More on her move below. Cameryn’s been the ND for this CBS o-and-o since March, 2008, and previously worked for KCRA-TV there.

Newly Named News Directors:

Beck

KTVK-TV, Phoenix, AZ…as mentioned above, CAMERYN BECK will be the next news director for Belo’s KTVK-TV. She’s leaving her job as ND for KOVR-TV in Sacramento after almost five years there. Cameryn replaces BRAD REMINGTON who announced his departure last year. Brad, a former ND in Denver, St. Louis, and Albuquerque, is returning to Denver where his wife is a principal at a private school. They’ve been commuting for the four years Brad’s been at KTVK.

Stribling

WLBT-TV, Jackson, MS…WILSON STRIBLING has been promoted to ND, effective March 1, for this Raycom owned NBC affiliate (which also provides news for Jackson’s FOX station, WDBD-TV). He’s a Jackson native who first joined the staff in 1998 on a part-time basis. He later worked as a reporter and morning anchor before being promoted to Assistant News Director in 1998. Wilson’s also worked in Youngstown and Denison, TX.

Smith

He replaces longtime WLBT News Director DENNIS SMITH who will retire at the end of February. Dennis has spent 45 years in TV news, most of it at WLBT, where he’s been the news director since 1989. For the five years before that, he was the station’s investigative reporter, managing editor, and assignment manager. He began his career working for WJTV in Jackson and went on to work in Lafayette, LA, and New Orleans. He also retired as a colonel in the National Guard. Oh, he has a law degree, too! Read more about his career in this station bio.

Redding

WCSH/WLBZ-TV, Portland and Bangor ME…congratulations to MIKE REDDING who gets his first ND job for these Gannett owned stations. Mike is currently the EP for another Gannett station, WFMY-TV in Greensboro, NC. He began his career as a weekend producer and weekday reporter in Springfield, MO, and later reported for 11 years in Charlotte. He’s won 28 Emmys and 2 National Edward R. Murrow Awards. His first management job was as Managing Editor for WDBJ-TV in Roanoke, VA. Mike replaces MAUREEN O’BRIEN who left in November after four years as ND.

Names in the News:

Capus

Two network executives announced their departures this week. STEVE CAPUS announced he’s leaving as President of NBC News. He’s been the longest tenured network news president.

Whitaker

And MARK WHITAKER, the VP and Managing Editor at CNN, also is stepping down. He says he is leaving to give new CNN President JEFF ZUCKER room to communicate one clear vision for the network’s future. He’s been at CNN since 2011 and previously worked for NBC News, the Washington Post, as well as Newsweek magazine.

FOX has purchased two stations in Charlotte from Capitol Broadcasting, and notified its current affiliate there, WCCB-TV, that it plans to yank its affiliation once the deal closes. That’s made many FOX affiliates nervous, according to this article.

WTVW-TV in Evansville, IN, will become a CW affiliate. Evansville has been without an affiliate for about a month since financially troubled WAZE-TV shut down. WTVW had been a FOX affiliate until July, 2011, when it lost its affiliation.

Nexstar (owned for KARK-TV and KARZ-TV) and Mission Broadcasting (which just closed on its purchase of KLRT-TV and KASN-TV) have merged their Little Rock operations, leaving longtime KLRT-TV News Director ED TRAUSCHKE and GM CHUCK SPOHN out of work. They were among 30 people who lost their jobs.

Nexstar also named RICHARD DOUTRE JONES the GM of its Salt Lake City duopoly, KTVX/KUCW. He replaces MATT JAQUINT.

Longtime newsman PETE JACOBUS is back in a newsroom. He’s serving as the interim ND for News Press & Gazette’s KRDO-TV in Colorado Springs, CO. He recently left WPTY/WLMT-TV in Memphis after three years as ND. Pete’s also been a news director in San Francisco, Detroit, and Philadelphia, and also worked for Magid and ABC.

Congratulations to WKRN-TV (Nashville) News Director MATTHEW ZELKIND on his induction into the Silver Circle of the Mid-South Emmy region. Matthew’s currently in his second stint as ND at WKRN, split by an assignment as Station Manager for sister Young station WRIC-TV in Richmond. He’s also been an ND in Wichita and Las Vegas, and worked in Denver and Los Angeles.

BRIAN KANZIGER may have set…or at least tied…the record for the longest possible move between TV stations within the continental U.S. He started last month as an EP for KIRO-TV in Seattle. He had been working for WSVN-TV in Miami.

While Brian was arriving in Seattle, ERIK BREON was leaving. He’s followed former boss PAT COSTELLO to KNXV-TV in Phoenix where he’ll be the morning EP. Erik had been the 11 PM EP for KING-TV.

Two management moves at KATU-TV in Portland, OR. Morning EP KAREN VAN VLECK was promoted to dayside EP. And 5:00 PM producer DAVE TRAUSNECK moved up to morning EP.

Former KATV (Little Rock) News Director RANDY DIXON is the new director of the David and Barbara Pryor Center for Arkansas Oral and Visual History at the University of Arkansas. He spent 31 years at KATV (ten as news director), starting as a photographer.
