Greetings:

Another slow week, with TWO news director changes and NO new openings

Our count of open ND jobs drops to 24.

No obituaries, no GM changes, (told you it was slow) but several interesting items in Names in the News (and other stuff).

  • More on RTDNA suspending its annual convention.
  • A huge mess at Indiana University involving the student newspaper.
  • A Michigan anchor wins a retaliation suit against his former station.
  • And some news people on the move.

Have a great week.

Names in the News (and other stuff):

Our Wednesday UPDATE brought you first word of the ‘suspension’ of the annual RTDNA Convention in lieu of a series of smaller gatherings with partner organizations, called the RTDNA World tour. If you missed that UPDATE, you can find it here (where we’ve corrected our egregious error where we listed the wrong year for the 9/11 attack). Our UPDATE did catch the eye of long time ND turned blogger KIRK VARNER who explored the topic in more detail.

Quite the mess this week at the once well-regarded Media School (aka Journalism School) at Indiana University in Bloomington. A dispute over whether the student newspaper could include ‘news’ in one of the seven print additions it published blew up.

Here’s a good overview of the situation from Poynter, from the head of the Indianapolis Press Club Foundation, and another from The New York Times, all written before this remarkable development this weekend.

You know it’s bad when famous IU alum MARK CUBAN craps on his alma mater.

DAVID CUSTER, a former anchor at Gray’s WNEM-TV in Saginaw, MI, won a retaliation lawsuit against the station. Details here.

Csanyi-Salcedo

Veteran newsman ZOLTAN CSANYI SALCEDO returns to radio (a full circle move, he says in this article from Media Moves) as news director and morning anchor at News Radio KKOB-AM/FM in Albuquerque. He’s spent the last six years as news director for KGRV-TV in Weslaco, TX, one of many stops during his long career.

At Tegna’s WGRZ-TV in Buffalo, KELSEY KAUFMANN has been promoted to Assistant ND from her EP role there.

General Manager News and Notes:

No GM changes to my knowledge this week.

October 12, 2025

Wednesday, October 15, 2025 UPDATE:

It’s the end of another era.

RTDNA is suspending its annual convention, and says it is unlikely to return.

With the exception of 2001 (cancelled due to 9/11) it’s been an annual event since 1946.

Before 2021, it was THE place to network and learn. The convention floor was huge, with helicopters, satellite trucks, newsroom computers, cameras, editing and other gear.

Attendance was well over 1,000 people.

Each of the (then) Big Three networks entertained in hospitality suites.

But the fallout from the missed 2001 convention…and the many changes in the industry…has changed everything.

RTDNA teamed with NAB for ten years, then SPJ. Both partnerships ended.

The attendance at June’s convention in New Orleans was just 180, and that was buttressed by last minute free registration to members in Louisiana.

RTDNA says it will replace the annual convention with a variety of smaller events around the country and the world, often partnering with other journalism groups like NAB, IRE, ONA, NAHJ, NLGJA, etc.

Many more details and the schedule can be found here.

There’s also a FAQ page on that website, and one of the questions addresses what I am sure is top of mind for you.

We hope to have more on this story in our full newsletter this weekend.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Greetings:

It’s been a fairly slow week, with just ONE news director change as a Michigan ND moves across state.

Our count of open ND jobs stands at 25.

We’re re-running an ad for a new book from a veteran ND with one small clarification. WAYNE LYNCH’s new book is NOT non-fiction. You probably figured that out when you read it involves vampires.

We have an obituary and a story about the death of a former Little Rock GM and station owner. He bought the station with a friend who later bought the Dallas Cowboys. But his self-written obituary neglected to mention his conviction on federal charges involving visa irregularities and his two mistresses.

There’s also an obituary for a Poynter business media reporter.

TWO new GMs…one involving a promotion within Nexstar to a top ten market, while the other is an ND who is assuming GM duties as well.

And TWO items in Names in the News this week. ONE is the choice of a new editor in Chief for CBS News, and the other because it happened about a mile from my house.

Read on!

Newly Named News Director:

Blanton

WJBK-TV, Detroit, MI…you learned in Tuesday’s UPDATE that BROOKS BLANTON has been named VP/News Director for this FOX o-and-o. Brooks has been the ND for Tgna’s WZZM-TV in Grand Rapids for the last 3 1/2 years. He replaces LAURA MOORE who left the station after 27 years of service…two as ND..when new GM PAUL McGONAGLE was named.

New News Director Opening:

WZZM-TV, Grand Rapids, MI…you learned about that BROOKS BLANTON is headed east on I-96 to become ND at FOX o-and-o WJBK-TV.Brooks was ND for this Tegna owned ABC affiliate for 3 1/2 years…and has, of course, other career stops.

Paid Ad:

BLOOD STAINED PAPERS – A new book by Wayne Lynch

Wayne Lynch, a reader of this site, a friend and longtime broadcast and regional cable news director has written his first fiction novel, a Halloween thriller.

It’s about an aggressive TV reporter recruited by a secret society of vampire hunters to save three print reporters infected by a centuries-old demon.

The story mixes real-time crimes with abundant fantasy horror in a mid 1970s East Coast city where he actually worked. It features location photos to weave a tale of terror, where only love can save the reporters’ humanity and their futures, but only after a violent death match between two vampire rivals.

It’s called Blood Stained Papers, available as an eBook at the Amazon Kindle Store.

Obituaries:

Jones

DAVID JONES, a onetime owner and GM of Little Rock’s KARK-TV died in September. He was 94. Jones bought KARK with partners, including close friend JERRY JONES, now owner of the Dallas Cowboys (and presumably NOT a relative, despite the same last name). He also is credited with improving ambulance services in Little Rock. David wrote his own obituary but neglected one critical part of his life mentioned in this story…involving his Chinese mistresses.

RICK EDMONDS, whose byline you might recognize if you read his coverage of the business of media on the Poynter website, died last week of injuries suffered in a car accident. He was 78.

Names in the News (and other stuff):

Weiss

You likely heard about BARI WEISS’s appointment as Editor in Chief of CBS News. This Associated Press article tries to explain why that appointment has caused so much controversy.

Sanchez

And in a story many of you have asked me about (since the original incident happened about a mile from my home), Fox Sports analyst MARK SANCHEZ was released from a local hospital today. You likely know he was involved in an altercation with a truck driver in downtown Indianapolis last weekend. He’s facing several charges, including felony battery. Reporter RUSS McQUAID from Nexstar’s CBS/FOX duopoly was at the Criminal Justice Center this morning when Sanchez was booked and scored this exclusive interview.

General Manager News and Notes:

Wholey

PATRICK WHOLEY gets a big promotion as he’ll be the next general manager for Nexstar’s WDVM/WDCW-TV (Independent/CW) in Washington, DC. He’s spent the last 12 years (of his 23 years there) as general manager for Nexstar’s WPRI-TV (ABC) in Providence, RI. You’ll learn in this story that he has a sales background. Patrick’s complete career history is on his Linkedin page.

Harsha

And congratulations to KEEGAN HARSHA, who has been named General Manager and Senior Director of News for Scripps’ KTVQ-TV (ABC) in Billings, MT. It’s another example of Scripps having GMs also serve as a department head. He’s currently Senior Director of News for The Montana News Network, which includes Scripps stations in EVERY city in Montana I’ve ever heard of…and some I have not. 🙂

October 5, 2025

Tuesday, October 7, 2025 UPDATE:

A FOX o-and-o reached across the state to hire its next news director.

Blanton

WJBK-TV in Detroit named BROOKS BLANTON as its next VP/News Director. Here’s the news release. Brooks is currently the ND for Tegna’s WZZM-TV (ABC) in Grand Rapids, Earlier in his career he ran the news department at WXMI-TV (FOX) in Grand Rapids, with a brief stint as ND for WCCB-TV in Charlotte in between. He’s also worked as a producer for Fox News Channel. Brooks’ complete career history is here.

And two clarifications from Sunday’s newsletter.

Davis

Thanks to several readers who’d worked with her for pointing it out, but I had the wrong first name for BELVA DAVIS, a trail blazing reporter on the West Coast.

And several other readers wondered if WAYNE LYNCH‘s book about vampire hunters was really non-fiction, as his ad said.

This should not surprise you, but it is not non-fiction.

We’ll be back this weekend with our full report, or earlier if news warrants another UPDATE.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Monday, October 6, 2025 UPDATE:

Greetings:

Two items in this update.

Weiss

First, Paramount has purchased the news and opinion site The Free Press and is installing its co-founder, BARI WEISS, as Editor in Chief of CBS News. The move is likely to unnerve some of the old guard at CBS News. This Wall Street Journal story says the Free Press site is known for railing against so-called woke orthodoxy. Weiss started the site, along with her wife and sister, after leaving her job as an opinion columnist and editor at The New York Times, saying she was done with legacy media.

Second item: Due to my editing error, last night’s new ad from our friends at Barry Nash & Company contained a bad URL (emailed newsletter version only) which was unfortunate since it was a strong column. But you can click on the corrected ad below to read it. I hope you do.

We’ll see you next week with our full report, or earlier if news warrants an UPDATE.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Greetings:

Twenty Five.

That’s the lowest in a long time count of open ND jobs according to our always unofficial figures.

That’s after FIVE new NDs were named this week, with NO new openings.

We have an ad for new book penned by a former news director. It sounds interesting…check it out below.

And we’re pleased to share that BARRY NASH & COMPANY has renewed its support for our efforts. That renewal comes with an interesting new post…it’s just below.

A former ND turned agent turned recruiter is recovering from surgery to remove a brain tumor…and he says his prognosis is good. That’s in Names in the News.

There’s ONE new GM as another former ND moves into the corner office.

And we have FOUR obituaries, including one for an Illinois GM who was once ND at his station.

All that and more as you read on.

Newly Named News Directors:

Abul-Ela

WCNC-TV, Charlotte, NC…SHAREEF ABUL-ELA is one of several new NDs this week who’s being promoted from Assistant ND. He’s been the AND here for two years. Details in this news release. Noschese

KDKA-TV, Pittsburgh, PA…congratulations to another Assistant ND who is moving up. CATHY NOSCHESE starts tomorrow as VP/News Director for this CBS o-and-o. She replaces SHAWN HODER who left in August to become ND for the startup news department at CBS owned WUPA-TV in Atlanta.

Ruefer

KWQC-TV, Davenport, IA…MAREAH RUEFER moves within Gray Media and returns to KWQC as news director. This NBC affiliate serves the Quad Cities in Illinois and Iowa. She’s been the Assistant ND at Gray’s WMTV in Madison, WI and replaces BETH MARSOUN who left this NBC affiliate…and the television news business…back in July.

Martinez

KRGV-TV, Weslaco, TX…yet ANOTHER Assistant ND moving up to the ND job at this Manship owned ABC affiliate. ANGIE MARTINEZ gets the promotion here. She’s been the AND for two years and has worked at KRGV since 2010. Details in this story posted on the station’s website. She replaces ZOLTAN CSANYI-SALCEDO who left in August after six years as ND.

Carly G.

WTOK-TV, Meridian, MS…CARLY GENSHEIMER returns to this Gray TV owned ABC affiliate as ND. She is currently the morning EP at sister Gray station WLBT-TV in Jackson, MS. Gray Regional VP TED FORTENBERRY shared the news via this email. Before WLBT, Carly was a producer for WTOK. She replaces LAUREN CARSON who left the station suddenly in the last week or two.

New News Director Openings:

Remarkably, despite FIVE new hires to fill open ND jobs, to my knowledge there are NO openings this week.

And while we normally restrict our coverage to management people, we have a soft spot for trail brazers. September 28, 2025

Monday, September 29, 2025 UPDATE:

Greetings:

Did someone, perhaps your Mom or a teacher, ever tell you “Haste makes Waste?”

Last night’s newsletter proves that point. I got a late start and in an attempt to get back on schedule, I screwed one item up substantially, and missed another that should have been included. But as a Monday morning bonus, I’ll toss in a new item from, of all places, Awful Announcing, predominately a sports site.

Ginther

The item I screwed up? The move of MARK GINTHER to be ND at WDBJ-TV in Roanoke, VA.

I told you that WDBJ was owned by Graham. Wrong! It is owned by Gray Media.

I told you that he was replacing SCOTT FLANNIGAN. Also wrong! He’s replacing BRETT BONFLEUR who left to become the Assistant ND for Gray’s WFSB-TV in Hartford/New Haven CT.

Apologies.

The item I missed?

Turner

The obituary for former KSTP-TV (Minneapolis-St. Paul/ABC) news director and anchor STAN TURNER. He died last week at the age of 81 after a three year fight with cancer. In addition to this obituary, KSTP posted this tribute to him. He also worked for co-owned All News Channel.

And the bonus item? Awful Announcing points out that 60 Minutes has not posted to Twitter (aka X) since last February, stopping just two days after an exchange with ELON MUSK who called 60 Minutes the biggest liars in the world and that ‘they’ deserve a long prison sentence.

But the news magazine continues to post on many other social sites.

Thanks to those of you who wrote to point out the errors in the WDBJ/Ginther item, though I resent the one that compared me to a WNBA referee.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Greetings:

We have links to a number of stories with interesting angles on exactly what the short lived boycott (in some quarters) of the Jimmy Kimmel Show means.

That’s in Names in the News, along with a few other items,

There are TWO new news directors named this week, with ONE new opening. BOTH the new news directors are returning to the corner office, and ONE is a name familiar to many of you.

Our count of open ND jobs is now at 29.

Again, a number of interesting items in Names in the News, including yet another VP of Content for Tegna and a California station shutters its news department to run newscasts from a San Francisco station.

Also…the answer to the trivia question “What’s the smallest TV market?” may be changing.

And…as far as I know…no GM changes this week.

Newly Named News Directors:

Adkins

WCPO-TV, Cincinnati, OH…JON ADKINS stays in Ohio as he joins this Scripps owned ABC affiliate as News Director. GM JEFF BROGAN shared the news. Jon most recently was ND at Tegna’s WKYC-TV (NBC) in Cleveland, a job he left in March after less than two years, though he spent 17 years there. At WCPO, he replaces BARRY FULMER who left (also in March) to return to WDRB-TV (FOX) in Louisville. Barry was ND here for three years.

Ginther

WDBJ-TV, Roanoke, VA…MARK GINTHER returns to a newsroom as the ND for this Gray Media owned CBS affiliate. Mark’s spent the last 2 1/2 years as Senior VP of Strategy for SmithGeiger. Before that, he worked for four years as Director of News and Operations for Sinclair. He’s also been an ND in Seattle, Dallas, and Des Moines and worked in other places. Here, he replaces BRETT BONFLEUR who left a few weeks ago to become the Assistant ND for Gray’s WFSB-TV in Hartford/New Haven.

New News Director Openings:

Hums

WTHR-TV, Indianapolis, IN…SCOTT HUMS moves up the Tegna corporate ladder as he’s been named VP of the Central News Desk (which apparently is currently called the Central Content Team). Details in this memo from Tegna’s Chief Content Officer ADRIENNE ROARK. Scott’s been at WTHR since 2015, first as Digital Director and then (in 2022 ) Director of Content. He’s also worked in Salt Lake City, South Bend, and for another Indianapolis station.

Names in the News (and other stuff):

As you know by now, both Sinclair’s and Nexstar’s boycott of JIMMY KIMMEL didn’t last very long. CNN’s Reliable Sources Newsletter has many interesting stories and angles about this. If you don’t subscribe…you should, and like all the best newsletters, it’s free. 🙂

The Wall Street Journal profiles Nexstar CEO PERRY SOOK who was the first to pull Kimmel off the air.

NBC named MATT FRUCCI Executive Producer of Nightly News.

Amparo

RAQUEL AMPARO, who left her job as General Manager of CBS owned KTVT-TV in Dallas last month, joins Tegna as one of its VPs of Content. She’ll oversee stations in Texas and posted about her new job…and her old one…on Linkedin. The move reunites her with ADRIENNE ROARK who is now Chief Content officer for Tegna but previously worked at CBS as President of CBS News and Stations.

News Press and Gazette’s KION-TV in Monterrey shut down its news department this week in favor or airing newscasts from CBS’s KPIX-TV in San Francisco. That also meant the end of a Spanish language newscast on the Telemundo affiliate. The Desk has more.

Often a joke as to where someone might look for work, the nation’s smallest TV market may soon be no more. Glendive, MT’s, KXGN-TV is being sold to Montana State University, which has filed to convert the station to a PBS affiliate. According to this article, there is no Nielsen market without a commercial station.

Are you tired of cheery stories like the last two? Considering making a move to teaching? Then check out this story in the SPJ Magazine The Quill from someone who make such a move, KEVIN FINCH. He worked for three stations here in Indianapolis, two as news director, before moving to academia.

General Manager News and Notes:

To the best of my knowledge, NO general manager changes this week.
