Thursday, March 16, 2023 UPDATE #2:

Greetings:

A rare second update in the same day usually means a large market change, and today’s is no exception.

Keenan

After just six months, SCOTT KEENAN is leaving CBS owned KTVT/KTXA-TV in Dallas/Ft. Worth. Here’s the memo to staff with details from GM RAQUEL AMPERO. Scott came to KTVT from the CBS bureau in Dallas where he was the Southwest Bureau Chief. He was the Assistant ND at KTVT from 2004-2006 and had also worked for CBS in Chicago, both at WBBM-TV and the CBS bureau there.

A clarification from today’s first UPDATE regarding JOSH MORGAN’s move to ND at KCTV in Kansas City. While he did began at sister Gray station WANF-TV in Atlanta in a digital role, he’s been the Managing Editor there for the last year.

And I lied to you in the last UPDATE (when I said I would not speak of my tournament bracket again). While my bracket WAS perfect at the time I wrote (as none of the games had ended) full disclosure compels me to report that I did lose the very first game.

But I am in good company: According to Yahoo Sports, only 2.88% of brackets in their competition were perfect through the first three games!

regards,

Rick Gevers

Thursday, March 16, 2023 UPDATE:

Greetings:

KCTV in Kansas City has named its next news director. And if you’re counting at home, he will be the TENTH news director there since 2010.

Morgan

JOSH MORGAN comes from KCTV’s sister-Gray CBS affiliate, WANF-TV (CBS) (formerly WGCL-TV) in Atlanta, where he’s been the Managing Editor for the last year and Director of Digital Media for one year before that. Both the Atlanta station and KCTV were owned by Meredith at the time he moved there but the sale progress was ongoing. Here’s part of the staff memo at KCTV.

Before Atlanta, Josh was the GM for WREX-TV in Rockford, IL, where he had earlier been news director. At KCTV, he replaces KATE GLOVER who departed last month after one year on the job.

We’ll have more on all the week’s news in our full newsletter this weekend.

And one point of personal pride. My NCAA bracket is PERFECT so far. Haters might say that’s because none of the games have ended yet, but it’s my story and I am sticking to it.

Since it won’t be perfect by the next time you hear from me, it’s unlikely I will mention it again.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Newly Named News Director:

WOIO/WUAB-TV, Cleveland, OH…this Gray TV owned duopoly promoted assistant ND BRIAN SINCLAIR to ND. He’s an 18+ year veteran there, having joined in 2004 as a producer. Here’s part of the announcement: Brian was the clear choice to lead our newsroom and continue to grow our linear and digital products. Brian has had a successful career as our assistant news director. Pioneering our OTT desk, helping to get TCL on air, and improving our linear and digital products are just a few of his many accomplishments.

New News Director Openings:

Gray TV has TWO openings this week, and both departures had relatively short tenures at their jobs.

Killian

KWCH-TV, Wichita, KS…DENISE KILLIAN has left this CBS affiliate after just a few months on the job. It was her second trip through Wichita, having spent four years at KSNW-TV (NBC) earlier in her career. Before moving to KWCH, Denise was ND for Allen Media’s WJRT-TV in Flint. She’s also been a news director in Davenport, IA, and worked in Dallas, Nashville, and Temple and Corpus Christi, TX.

Baldwin

WTVG-TV, Toledo, OH…MICHAEL BALDWIN has departed this Gray owned ABC affiliate after barely one year as ND here. It’s been a busy few years for Michael. Before becoming ND in Toledo, he spent six months as the Assistant ND there, and one year as the ND for Gray’s WDTV in Bridgeport, WV. He’d been a reporter/anchor for Gray’s WXIX-TV in Cincinnati for five years. Michael’s worked in other markets: details on his Linkedin page.

Finally, our compete list of openings below has been modified to reflect that the NBC opening in Chicago is now listed as a Senior VP/News for both NBC’s WMAQ-TV and Telemundo’s WSNS-TV. FRANK WHITTAKER had been Station Manager and VP/News for WMAQ before retiring late last year.

Names in the News:

Maas

A San Diego jury awarded more than 1.5 million dollars to former KUSI-TV (Independent) news anchor SANDRA MAAS. She had sued the station and won on a claim that she was being paid less than her male co-anchor. More details in a complicated case in this story from The San Diego Union-Tribune. Maas left the station in 2015. KUSI’s parent company, McKinnon Broadcasting, says it will appeal the verdict.

CBS Stations has named OLSEN EBRIGHT and FRED HARNER Vice Presidents of Streaming and Digital.

KPRC-TV in Houston has named KENDYL TURNER as its streaming producer. She’s a native of Houston. More about Kendyl and her new job at this Graham Media owned NBC affiliate in this note from ND BERNICE KEARNEY.

In Milwaukee, ADRIENNE CROSSLEY crosses the street to join Scripps’ WTMJ-TV (NBC) as Managing Editor. She’s been an EP at the Spectrum News operation and has also worked in Chicago, Rockford, and Springfield, IL. WTMJ News Director TIM VETSCHER shared the news with his staff.
