New News Director Opening:

Kilgore

Kilgore

WINK-TV, Ft. Myers, FL…though the station has not announced a change, there are multiple media reports that RUSS KILGORE has left this locally owned CBS affiliate. Russ has been the ND here since the summer of 2008. He’s also been an ND in Orlando, Baton Rouge and Palm Desert, CA. My attempts to reach Russ have been unsuccessful.

Queen

Queen

WIS-TV, Columbia, SC…Friday was BRYAN QUEEN‘s last day as news director for this Raycom owned NBC affiliate. He’s been the ND here since September, 2013 and sent this memo to this staff telling them he was leaving. Bryan served as the ND for WROC-TV in Rochester, NY, for the previous two years. He also worked as a news manager for News 14 Carolina, at NBC News Channel in Charlotte, and for WXII-TV in Winston-Salem. He’s also worked for MSNBC.

WTVY-TV, Dothan, AL…KIM ALLEN is headed north to become the Morning EP for WDTN-TV in Dayton. ND DENISE ECK tells me Kim is from the area. He was graduated from Ohio Univeristy. He’s been the ND for this Gray TV owned CBS affiliate for almost 3 years. Previously he spent 13 years in sports for both WTVY and WDHN-TV in Dothan and also worked in Florida.

Newly Named News Directors:

Brady

Brady

XETV, San Diego, CA…JON BRADY returns to Southern California as news director for this CW affiliate. It’s owned by Bay City Television. Jon’s been the morning EP for KING-TV in Seattle for the last two years. Before that, he worked at Seattle’s FOX affiliate, KCPQ-TV, first as News Director and then as Director of Content and News Programming. Jon spent 14 years at the Fox News Channel bureau in Los Angeles, the last seven as bureau chief. He’s also worked in Miami and Washington, and, according to his Linkedin page, spent 2+ years as a comic book writer! At XETV, he replaces DON SHAFER who left in December after two years as ND here.

Henning

Henning

WPEC-TV, West Palm Beach, FL…ADAM HENNING will be the next news director at this Sinclair owned CBS affiliate. He’s spent the last seven years as the ND for Raycom’s WAFF-TV in Huntsville, AL: we told you last January that he’d be leaving that post. The move is a return to Florida for Adam, an alum of the University of Florida who once was an ND in Gainesville. He’s also been an ND in Greenville and Wilmington, and also worked in Mobile and Raleigh. At WPEC, he replaces MIKE McCORMICK who is being upped to Regional News Director for Sinclair.

Obituary:

DICK FABIAN died March 19 at the age of 81. He’s a former news director for WEYI-TV in Clio, MI, but spent 20 years as an anchor and meteorologist for WNEM-TV in Saginaw. More here.

Names in the News:

Horvit

Horvit

MARK HORVIT is stepping down as executive director of Investigative Reporters and Editors, Inc. (IRE). He’s been running the organization for more than eight years. But he’s not going far: he’s taking a new position with the University of Missouri School of Journalism which has hosted IRE for more than 40 years. Mark told me he’ll continue to work with IRE on several ongoing projects. More in this post from IRE President SARAH COHEN. Your note of congratulations to Mark can be sent to: mhorvit@ire.org

Univision has named CHRIS PENA as Senior VP of Local Media Television News. He’s been an EP at MSNBC. And the company named LOURDES TORRES as Senior VP of Political Coverage & Special Projects. More details in this press release.

I stumbled across two links of note that you might enjoy.

WCRA-AM in Effingham, IL, posted this interview with former WGN-TV (Chicago) and WLVI-TV (Boston) news director PAUL DAVIS. Paul’s mother served for more than 30 years as the ND here: naturally that’s how Paul got his start. (Never heard of Effingham? It’s where Interstates I-70 and I-57 cross: one of the convenience stores there offers T-shirts with the inscription “Welcome to Illinois, where our governors make our license plates!”)

And WTVC-TV in Chattanooga posted a 1976 air-check on its website. I found it noteworthy because the first block featured two reporters who would go on to become major market news directors, DON NORTH and GARY WORDLAW.

General Manager News:

After 17 years, PATTI SMITH is stepping down as General Manager of Austin’s KVUE-TV. She told the local newspaper in this story that she’s ready to hit the pause button, that it was the ‘end of a chapter’ but not the ‘end of the book’. She earlier served as GM for KVEO-TV in Brownsville.

Thursday, March 17, 2016 UPDATE #2:

Greetings:

Well, that didn’t take long.

Earlier today we told you about JONATHAN SHELLEY’s departure from Hearst’s WDSU-TV after nine years as news director.

That was announced yesterday.

Franklin

Franklin

This morning the station announced that Assistant News Director AKILI FRANKLIN will move into the top job. Akili’s been at this NBC station for just three months, coming from another Hearst station, WVTM-TV in Birmingham where she served a year as an EP. She’s worked at several other Hearst stations, as you will learn here.

This is a homecoming for Akili…she’s a New Orleans native who began her career at WWL-TV.

You may now return to watching basketball.

Thursday, March 17, 2016 UPDATE:

When I said…at the end of Monday’s UPDATE…that it was shaping up to be a busy week…I was just guessing.

But we have news of another veteran news director leaving his post.

JONATHAN SHELLEY, who’s been the ND for Hearst’s WDSU-TV in New Orleans since 2007, is leaving that NBC affiliate. In this memo to the staff, he said that he and his wife had decided begin a new chapter in their lives. And here’s the note that GM JOEL VILMENAY sent to the station.

Before joining WDSU, Jonathan spent six years as the Assistant ND for another Hearst station, KOCO-TV in Oklahoma City. He’s also worked in Las Vegas, Milwaukee, and Ft. Myers.

We’ll see you at the end of the week with our full report. Until then, good luck with your NCAA brackets.

Greetings:

Just ONE new news director opening and NO new news directors this week. Our list of open ND jobs edges up to 19.

A reminder that I always like to hear from you about any news director changes to keep our list current and complete. My email is: rick@rickgevers.com.

For the second consecutive week, FOUR of our FIVE paid help wanted ads are for Assistant ND openings. Check those out below.

In Names in the News, a reunion in Boston as a former Tampa ND rejoins his former boss from New York. There is one new large market EP, two new EPs at some middle market stations, and we’ll tell you about a Oklahoma City News Director and her fight against breast cancer. And there’s an obituary for a long ago Magid employee that some may remember.

And we welcome a new advertiser this week, Baron, who joins us to tell you about its new product. The company describes it as a new complete weather solution for all markets – large and small. More in this news release, in their ad below, and at their booth at NAB where they’ll be demonstrating Baron Lynx.

New News Director Opening:

KPNX-TV, Phoenix, AZ…we told you earlier this week of SANDRA KOTZAMBASIS‘s departure from this Tegna owned NBC affiliate. Her predecessor as news director, Station Manager MARK CASEY, will serve as ND in the interim. Sandra’s note to her staff…and a note to her fellow Tegna news directors, are here.

March 6, 2016

Tuesday, March 8, 2016 UPDATE:

Greetings:

There’s a news director change in the 12th market this evening.

Kotzambasis

Kotzambasis

SANDRA KOTZAMBASIS has left Tegna’s KPNX-TV in Phoenix after less than 18 months as ND. She was promoted to that job, replacing longtime ND MARK CASEY, from her earlier role as Senior Executive Producer. Mark, now the Station Manager at this NBC affiliate, will run the news department in the interim.

Sandra sent a note to her fellow Tegna NDs explaining her departure. And she included the note she sent to her staff. You can click here to read both of them,

Sandra also spent more than 19 years (in two stints) at the FOX affiliate in Phoenix, KSAZ-TV. She’s also worked outside of TV during her career. The full details are in her Linkedin page.

We’ll have all the latest news in our full newsletter later this week.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Greetings:

Just ONE new news director opening (caused by the departure of a longtime Nashville ND) and ONE newly named news director in this week’s report. Our list of open ND jobs stands now at 18.

FOUR of our FIVE paid help wanted ads are for Assistant ND openings. Check those out below.

Also his week, a longtime Dallas news director turned general manager is retiring. That’s below, along with a very full Names in the News section. You’ll learn about a new consultant at SmithGeiger, a handful of news managers on the move, new jobs for two former news executives, and a look at an honest to gosh race car with my logo on it.

Finally, we don’t usually report on the moves of network correspondents, but I’ll make an exception for my very good friend MARK POTTER who’s leaving NBC News after 41 years in our business. Mark and I went to Missouri together and later worked together at WCKT-TV (now WSVN-TV) in Miami. Miami is where Mark spent the bulk of his career, with stints at WCKT, WPLG-TV, ABC, CNN, and NBC. Mark’s a hard news guy who tells me he’s taking a break, and judging by the comments on his twitter feed, lots of people hope he’s back soon.

She’s also worked in Phoenix, Atlanta and Sacramento and is very active in RTDNA.

Finally, longtime readers know of my passion for IndyCar racing. Now that interest has spread to sports car racing! Thanks to MIKE JAMES, the founder and editor of the must-read Newsblues.com, my logo adorns his race car, dubbed Baby Blue:

Here’s more about the car and the series in which Mike drives:

The #8 NewsBlues Porsche Boxster competes in the national Porsche Club of America “Spec Boxster” race series, in which identically prepared cars battle in a year-long points championship at racetracks across the country. Cars in the “Spec Boxster” series have identical engines, transmissions, brakes, suspension, and weight. It features some of the closest and most exciting sports car racing in America.

“Baby Blue” was built by the world-renowned South Florida race shop TuneRS in Coral Springs. The car is driven by Mike James, 68, the editor of NewsBlues.com and a longtime racer.

“Baby Blue” will compete in eight PCA national club races in 2016. In February, the car finished 11th in class and 31st overall at the 48 Hours at Sebring. It will next race at Road Atlanta April 1-3.

“Baby Blue” can also be seen this year at Circuit of the Americas in Austin, TX (May 6-8), Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course (May 13-15), Watkins Glen International (June 3-5), Virginia International Raceway (June 24-26), Indianapolis Motor Speedway (August 19-21), and the Daytona International Speedway (Oct. 21-23).

General Manager News:

Another old friend, MARIA BARRS is retiring from her job as GM of Tegna’s KXTV in Sacramento. Maria, of course, was a longtime ND at KDFW-TV in Dallas, and has also worked in St. Louis, Redding, CA, and Salinas-Monterey, CA. Maria told me she’s ready to do something completely different, “mostly involving time with family, sleeping enough, traveling, writing and volunteering.” RISA OMEGA, a 26 year employee of KXTV who’s most recently been sales manager, has been promoted to GM.
