June 27, 2021

Thursday, July 1, 2021:

Greetings:

Saddened to bring you TWO more obituaries today, including one of a current news director. But we will share some good news about the hiring of a top 10 market ND as well.

Jackson

Jackson

ROD JACKSON, news director for Nexstar’s WOWK-TV in Charleston/Huntington, WV, lost his battle with cancer yesterday.

GM SEAN BANKS shared the sad news with his staff via email.

Rod was diagnosed in December, as he shared in this note to me last May:

As many of my friends and colleagues know the week of Christmas 2020 I was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic stomach cancer. A shock, but things got worse in January when the doctors added kidney failure, congestive heart failure and COPD & emphysema to the list. 5 months later “I’m not dead yet!” and am in the office 5 days a week. Bottom line – I love parades (this photo from Saturday). Enjoy life and fight the good fight!”

Rod Jackson parade#2

Jackson

Jackson

Rod took the WOWK job two years ago as it allowed hm to be closer to family. He’d been the ND for Nexstar’s WBRE/WYOU-TV. He’s a former ND in Cedar Rapids, worked as an Assistant ND in Topeka, spent 13 years with ABC’s NewsOne in Los Angeles, a managing editor in Salt Lake City, and spent 19 years as a reporter before moving into management. He was active on Linkedin as recently as four days ago, where he had updated his picture, showing how he had been impacted by cancer.

RIP, Rod.

Hinkle

Hinkle

STEVE HINKLE (right), a former ND in Indianapolis, Norfolk, and El Paso, a news manager in Los Angeles and Washington, DC, who had also worked in Dallas and San Diego, died this week. He most recently had worked for Avid as an project engineer. His Facebook page included this timeline of his career. I hope to have more on Steve’s passing in our full newsletter this weekend.

We’ll close with better news.

Fuchs

Fuchs

Congratulations to KEATON FUCHS who’s been promoted to news director for KTRK-TV, the ABC o-and-o in Houston. He has been the head of content and data strategy for the station. This news release explains his background in detail. He’s also worked in newsrooms around Texas.

At KTRK, he replaces REHAN ASLAM, who was promoted to ND at WABC-TV in New York. His boss, GM WENDY GRANATO is also a former ND at KTRK.

It’s been a busy week, with an UPDATE every day. That means a busy newsletter this weekend, which may be delayed by the holiday.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Wednesday, June 30, 2021 UPDATE:

Greetings:

TWO items today, and, as I hoped would be the case, both fall into the ‘good news’ category

Moreno

Moreno

CHRISTY MORENO, who’s been GM of Tegna’s WHAS-TV (ABC) in Louisville since 2018, is on her way to Seattle to become GM for the company’s duopoly there, KING/KONG-TV (NBC-independent). Details in the company’s news release.

She’ll find a familiar face in the news director’s chair: JULIE WOLFE, who had been the ND at WHAS, started last week as the new ND at KING.

Christy’s a former ND at Tegna’s KUSA-TV (NBC) in Denver and WBIR-TV (NBC) in Knoxville. She’s also worked in Houston and Wichita Falls, TX.

Stephens

Stephens

And congratulations to longtime news director SUE STEPHENS who has announced her retirement. More here. She’s been the news director for Hearst’s WVTM-TV (NBC) in Birmingham for the past six years and ran the news department at Hearst’s Albuquerque station, KOAT-TV (ABC) for 12 years before that. She’s also been an ND in Springfield, IL, and has worked in Atlanta, Mobile, and Charleston, SC.

Congratulations, Sue!

Looks like we’ll have another busy newsletter this weekend.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Tuesday, June 29, 2021 UPDATE:

Greetings:

At the risk of you not reading future UPDATES, fearing more sad news, there are TWO more obituaries today, both of California news people.

Breshears

Breshears

CAROL BRESHEARS, a 30+ year plus employee of KTTV in Los Angeles, died Sunday of complications from a stroke. Friends learned in this email from former LA News Director NANCY VALENTA, which was passed along by BOB TARLAU, host of a site called Newsgeezers, for west coast news people.

In addition to her time at KTTV, Carol was a news director for KEYT-TV in Santa Barbara and worked for a Los Angeles radio station.

Of note: Carol’s daughter SUSAN BAYH died earlier this year of brain cancer at the age of 61. Susan’s husband EVAN was a two term Indiana governor and followed that with two terms as a US Senator from Indiana.

Romo

Romo

Meanwhile, staff at NBC News is mourning the loss of 42 year NBC employee RIC ROMO (right), who died Sunday at the age of 62. Ric was in charge of the network’s Los Angeles bureau. He spent more than 30 years as a producer on The Today Show, which remembered him on-air. And NBC correspondent JOE FRYER put together this brief tribute.

Hopefully our next UPDATE will contain happier news.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Monday, June 28, 2021 UPDATE:

Greetings:

Sorry to report the death of a legendary California newsman.

Zehnder

Zehnder

FRED ZEHNDER, who ran the newsroom at KTVU-TV in Oakland/San Fransisco for more than 20 years, died last night when an alleged drunk driver struck him as he walked in a crosswalk.

He was 87.

The station reported on his passing here.

In addition to his tenure at KTVU, he also worked at KPIX-TV and KGO-TV in San Francisco, as well as KOVR-TV in Sacramento.

KTVU posted this story on Zehnder’s role in establishing the station’s news legacy.

And MARK CURTIS, who worked with Fred for years, shared this memory:

Fred had a GREAT quote we heard often: “Winning awards is nice, but there is no bigger reward than earning the respect of your audience!” THAT’s why we were such a number one powerhouse for decades!!!

Fred left KTVU in 1999, but stayed in the news business, having founded one newspaper and later buying another.

More on this sad story in our full newsletter this weekend.

regards,

Rick Gevers

**** ***** ****

Greetings:

A few months ago I whined to you about problems with a ‘new and unimproved’ version of Constant Contact, which is how I format and distribute the emailed version of this newsletter.

Sadly, the issues are getting worse and not better, which contributed to our late posting of this week’s version. If only Constant Contact manned its help line on the weekend. 😉

Apologies for both the complaining (you get enough of that from your staff) and the delay.

But it’s another busy weekend, with FOUR new openings (including ONE in a top 30 market) and TWO newly named news directors. That leaves 38 ND openings on our list, and SIX of them are among our SEVEN Paid Help Wanted ads.

A former local ND leaves FOX News to join Nexstar’s News Nation. A former ‘interim’ ND is the new play by play announcer for an NFL team, and TWO local stations won Peabody Awards this week.

Those items are in Names in the News, and in our GM section, details about the upcoming retirement of a longtime Detroit General Manager.

Read on for details of those stories.

Congratulations to Scripps’ KNXV-TV (ABC) in Phoenix and Tegna’s KING-TV (NBC) in Seattle on their Peabody Award wins this week. (And apologies if I missed any other local commercial stations) The complete list of winners is here. (And did you know that Phoenix is now a bigger market than Seattle?)

Obituary:

Kekaula

Kekaula

Sad news this weekend from Hawaii as ROBERT KEKAULA died Saturday. He was 56. He’d been the Managing Editor for KITV-TV, Allen Media’s ABC affiliate in Honolulu, but was better known for his many years as a sportscaster. ND JANICE GIN summed up his impact in this email to me late last night. The station reported his passing here, and added this remembrance, while the local newspaper had reaction from others.

VICKIE BURNS joins the Black News Channel as its next Senior Vice President of Content. Vickie most recently was ND for Nexstar’s WPIX-TV (CW) in New York City. She had consulted the station when Tribune owned it and has spent much of her career working for NBC owned stations in Los Angeles, Chicago, and Washington.

Swann

Swann

KRYSTAL SWANN has been promoted from Nightside Executive Producer to Assistant News Director for Gray’s WBRC-TV in Birmingham. Here’s the note from News Director SHANNON ISBELL to her staff. Before her two year stint as the Nightside EP, Krystal was the evening assignment manager. Earlier she produced the morning news for WVTM-TV (NBC) in Birmingham.

Baldwin

Baldwin

MICHAEL BALDWIN joins Gray’s WTVG-TV (ABC) in Toledo as its new Assistant ND. We told you in May that Michael was leaving Gray’s WDTV in Bridgeport, VA, after a year as news director ‘for a job to be announced soon’. Before Bridgeport, Michael was a reporter and Saturday anchor at Gray’s WXIX-TV (FOX) in Cincinnati. He’s also worked in Cleveland and many other markets.

Scripps is launching a statewide news network in Florida, available over-the-top (OTT) in every TV market in the state. The Florida 24 Network will air real-time, enterprise reporting from Scripps’ stations in the Miami, Tampa, West Palm Beach, Tallahassee and Fort Myers markets. More here.

And it’s possible most of the reporters in the Lower Great Lakes Emmy region are jealous of WISH-TV (Capital City Broadcasting/CW) News Director AL CARL. That’s because he won an EMMY for his reporting efforts during riots in downtown Indianapolis in May, 2020. Al jumped in as part of an ‘all hands on deck’ situation and reported multiple live shots during WISH’s continuing coverage.

General Manager News and Notes:

If you were paying attention above, you learned that MARIAN (MIM) DAVEY is being promoted to GM for Fox’s KMSP/WTTC-TV in Minneapolis. She’s been the ND there for eight years, has worked there for 20, and earlier worked at WCCO-TV in Minneapolis. Congrats, Mim!

June 13, 2021

Friday, June 18, 2021 UPDATE:

Greetings:

A veteran ND moves to his second top 15 market in today’s UPDATE.

Bruce

Bruce

PHIL BRUCE, who’s currently the news director for Sinclair’s KTUL-TV (ABC) in Tulsa, moves within Sinclair to take over the newsroom at KOMO-TV (ABC) in Seattle. He posted this to his Linkedin account.

Komo-Phil Bruce

Phil’s been the ND at KTUL for five years. He grew up in nearby Arkansas. Before that he spent five years as ND for KHOU-TV (CBS) in Houston. Phil started as a reporter in Ft. Smith and held a wide range of jobs as his Linkedin page will tell you.

In Seattle, he replaces BILL DALLMAN who left at the end of May to become GM at Tegna’s KARE-TV (NBC) in his hometown of Minneapolis.

We’ll have a very full newsletter for you this weekend!

regards,

Rick Gevers

Thursday, June 17, 2021 UPDATE:

Greetings:

It’s our favorite kind of UPDATE…the one where we share the news that a news director in a large market is moving into the GM’s quarters.

Davey

Davey

Today it’s MARIAN (MIM) DAVEY, who’s been bumped upstairs at KMSP/WTTC-TV in Minneapolis/St. Paul. She’s been the news director there since 2013 and succeeds SHEILA OLIVER, who was promoted to GM for FOX’s KCPQ-TV in Seattle. More in this story.

Mim’s a 20 year veteran of the station, and worked for 14 years at WCCO-TV (CBS) in Minneapolis.

A certain irony here: When Mim was promoted to ND in 2013, she replaced BILL DALLMAN, who moved to California to become ND for Fox Sports 1. Now she will compete against Bill, who joined KARE-TV (Tegna/NBC) in Minneapolis earlier this month as General Manager.

While there may well be others, this is one of TWO top 15 markets with former news directors as GMs, the other being New York, where ex-newsies ERIC LERNER (WNBC-TV) and CHAD MATTHEWS (WABC-TV) run stations.

Back this weekend with a full newsletter.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Monday, June 14, 2021 UPDATE:

Greetings:

TWO stories in today’s UPDATE: both involve new news directors at Scripps stations, and ONE involves a cross-market move which we haven’t seen in a while.

Jacob

Jacob

First, the question of where MITCH JACOB‘s next job would be has been answered with the news today that he will be the next ND for Scripps’ KNXV-TV (ABC) in Phoenix. We told you last week that Mitch was leaving Meredith’s-about-to-be-Gray’s WSMV-TV (NBC) in Nashville after two years. It’s a return to Phoenix for Mitch, who earlier in his career was the ND for KPHO-TV (CBS) there.

He replaces MARK CASEY who left in March after 2+ years as news director.

Boers

Boers

And the rare cross market move involves DAN BOERS who is leaving Nexstar’s WOOD-TV (NBC) in Grand Rapids, and going across town to Scripps’ WXMI-TV (FOX). WXMI GM KIM KRAUSE alerted the staff via this note. Dan’s been the ND at WOOD for 6+ years. He actually began at WOOD, left for year to work in Lansing, and returned in 1997, working his way up to the ND job.

At WXMI, he replaces BROOKS BLANTON who left last April (after 7+ years) to become ND for WCCB-TV (CW) in Charlotte.

Barring further updates, we’ll see you next weekend.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Greetings:

Almost!

Almost 40 news director openings, for those of you who wager on such things.

39 is the actual total, with news this week of FIVE new openings and just TWO jobs filled. ALL of the openings are in top 76 markets, and TWO of them are featured in our THREE Paid Help Wanted ads.

Always grateful when we have no obituaries which is the case this week.

We do have news of the retirement of a 20 year Denver general manager, and a FIVE time news director makes a family move from market 16 to market 38.

That and more in Names in the News.

Stay cool this week!

Jeff won’t be doing double duty: the search is on for this replacement as chief meteorologist. He replaces MALLORY HUFF who left in April after eight months as ND and nine years at the station.

Flannigan

Flannigan

KMIZ-TV, Columbia, MO…SCOTT FLANNIGAN landed quickly as the new ND for this News Press and Gazette ABC affiliate. GM CURTIS VARNS (a former ND at KMIZ) sent me this note about the hire. Congratulation to Indiana University professor (and former ND) MIKE CONWAY and his colleagues who scored a grant to help Mike with his new project. The grant, which could be more than $20,000, will help create the Indiana Broadcast History Archive. Mike points out that too many stations are discarding valuable film, tape, and other archival material, which are historic in nature. He’s been in touch with several Indiana stations to acquire that material. More on the grant here.

June 6, 2021

Thursday, June 10th, 2021 UPDATE:

Greetings:

Apparently my crystal ball (re: yesterday’s comment about whether there would be more UPDATES this week) was wrong, as we have news today of a top ten market ND getting bumped up to the corporate staff.

Harrison

Harrison

Congratulations to PAIGE HARRISON, ND for Hearst’s WCVB-TV (ABC) in Boston, who’s been named VP/News for Hearst. Details here. Paige has been ND for WCVB since 2017 and earlier had been ND of the company’s West Palm Beach station, WPBF-TV. She’s also worked in Orlando, Pittsburgh, and Oklahoma City, as well as in three markets in her native Canada.

She replaces ANDREW VREES on the corporate staff. Andrew, himself a former WCVB ND, was promoted to GM for Hearst’s WMUR-TV in Manchester, NH, last month. Paige will report to Senior VP/News BARB MAUSHARD and will move to the corporate office in New York.

Barring any further big news, we’ll see you this weekend with our full newsletter.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Wednesday, June 9th, 2021 UDPATE:

Greetings:

TWO medium market news directors have new jobs in tonight’s UPDATE, while another former ND has landed a new gig just a few weeks after leaving his last position.

Jacob

Jacob

First, MITCH JACOB is leaving Meredith’s (soon to be Gray’s) WSMV-TV (NBC) in Nashville after a little more than two years as ND. His new job will be announced soon, he told me tonight. Mitch is a former ND in Washington, Phoenix, Columbus, Wichita, Toledo and Harlingen, TX. His successor will be the FIFTH news director in little more than six years here.

Kurtz

Kurtz

MARK KURTZ is moving from the ND office at Nexstar’s Norfolk NBC affiliate, WAVY-TV, to the GM’s office at Lockwood’s WCAV-TV in Charlottesville, VA, Mark’s been at WAVY for nine years and has been the ND since August, 2015. Staff learned in this note from GM CAROL WARD. Mark’s a former ND in Midland-Odessa and has worked in Waco and Corpus Christi.

Flannigan

Flannigan

Finally, SCOTT FLANNIGAN starts June 21st as the next ND for NPG’s KMIZ-TV (ABC) in Columbia, MO. It will be a short move for Scott, whose last job ended in April at Meredith’s KCTV in Kansas City (okay, officially Fairway, KS, right across the state line.) He replaces CURTIS HANCOCK who left KMIZ last month after six years as ND.

My crystal ball doesn’t know if we’ll have any more UPDATES before the weekend, but if it doesn’t know, who does? (Don’t answer that!)

regards,

Rick Gevers

Greetings:

A busy week, with FOUR new news directors and THREE new openings.

All those changes leaves our list of open ND jobs at 36. ONE of those open ND jobs is among our FOUR paid help wanted ads.

A 19 year veteran of CBS retired Friday as GM of one of its largest owned stations.

And in Names in the News, details about a new job for a former Montana ND, a new book from a former Ohio ND, and we’ll mark the retirement of a Green Bay newsman.

Read on for the details!

He’s been anchoring for Scripps’ KRIS/KZTV in Corpus Christi, and had spent some of his five years there as the ND for KZTV. Drew began his career in sports before moving to news anchoring: his Linkedin page has the whole story. If my records are correct, Drew replaces SCOTT PICKEY who left earlier this year after not quite three years as ND.
