Greetings:

The list of open news director positions continues to drop as THREE stations have filled open positions. One of those hires did create the only new opening to share with you, so there are now just 18 stations with an opening.

My count, of course, is unofficial. No wagering, please.

We do have a paid ad for one of those openings, as well as another ad for AP’s ENPS newsroom system. Learn more about it either at NAB or via their website.

We’ve renamed “Names in the News” to “Misc. Items and Names in the News” this week. You’ll have to scroll down to see why. And we have one new category “Help a Professor”.

You’ll have to scroll down for that one, too.

All that and more following this week’s changes:

NEW NEWS DIRECTOR OPENING:

WKRG-TV, Mobile, AL…DAN CATES is leaving one Media General station for another. He’s been named ND for WSPA-TV in Spartansburg, SC. More on that move before. Dan’s been ND for this CBS affiliate for more than ten years.

NEW NEWS DIRECTORS NAMED:

KUTV, Salt Lake City, UT…STEVE HERTZKE has been promoted to News Director for this CBS affiliate. He’s worked his way up at the station, having produced almost every newscast there, worked as the lead producer on the investigative unit, and most recently served as Senior Executive Producer. He replaces TANYA VEA who left the station last August after three years as ND. KUTV is owned by Four Points Media Group, a subsidiary of Cerberus Capital Management. Late last month, Nexstar agreed to manage the company’s seven stations for a fee.

WSPA-TV, Spartansburg, SC…as noted above, DAN CATES will be the next ND for this Media General owned CBS affiliate. He’s coming from sister MG station WKRG-TV in Mobile, AL. He replaces ALEX BONGIORNO who left the station last month to become ND for WTAE-TV in Pittsburgh. She had been the ND there for about 18 months.

KTVE/KARD-TV, Monroe, LA…veteran News Director MELISSA KLINZING is the new ND for this Nexstar operated NBC/FOX duopoly. Melissa’s a former ND in Philadelphia, Tampa, Denver, Oklahoma City and most recently was the Assistant ND for WTKR-TV in Norfolk. She replaces RANDALL KAMM who left the station earlier this year after just over two years as ND.

Learn more about AP’s ENPS System at NAB
(or on the web if you’re not going to Las Vegas)

See the AP in Content Central at NAB 2009, booth C161, and preview ENPS 7.0 starting with its powerful new Digital Publishing Engine. In addition to making it incredibly easy to create multimedia content for on-air, online, and mobile devices, dynamic feedback from your public Web site can automatically flow back into ENPS so producers can see which stories are getting the most attention. ENPS 7.0 components will bolt right on to existing ENPS 6.0 systems as they are released over the next two years.

Also take a closer look at the ENPS Web client, part of the ENPS Mobile Suite, enhanced to give remote users more powerful editing capabilities. ENPS Mobile empowers journalists to work via out-of-the-newsroom browsers on PCs and Macs, as well as on PDAs and cell phones.

More than 52,000 reporters, writers, and producers in 57 countries use ENPS, and no other system supports as many companies and products, allowing freedom of choice, innovation, and integration of best-fit solutions.

ENPS will be showcased by partners in 30 more locations on the convention floors. Need more information, or staying home this year? Check out http://www.enps.com or http://apbroadcast.com

MISC. ITEMS & NAMES in the NEWS:

WYOU-TV in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton eliminated its news department last week, firing 14 people in the process. WYOU, a CBS affiliate, is owned by Mission Broadcasting but is operated by Nexstar, which owns WBRE-TV, the NBC affiliate in the market.

Many of you know KEITHA CORBIT who’s worked for several vendors during her career, including some time with Don Fitzpatrick. She’s now joined a new venture called News Certified Exchange, created by a group of ex-Cnn employees. It’s designed to provide journalists with 24/7 access to experts at no cost to the reporter. You can get more details from Keitha at: keitha.corbit@newscertified.com

RTNDA announced the winners of Edward R. Murrow Regional Awards this week. You can find the winners here.

Speaking of RTNDA, those of you attending are invited to join an informal gathering of news managers on Monday night, April 20, at the Parasol Down bar in the Wynn Hotel and Casino. That’s the same place this gathering was held last year. It’s set to begin around 9:30, and I’ll look forward to seeing you there.

Help a professor!

Arizona State University Professor BILL SILCOCK is working on a new book and would welcome input from you. He writes:

Willing to share how you and your staff resolved some “tough calls” or ethical challenges in electronic news? Broadcast faculty at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism are writing a fresh book for use in the classroom and the newsroom. They need your help. If you’re willing, you can contact Bill Silcock at: bsilcock@asu.edu

Or you can just answer the questions below and e-mail them directly to Bill:

* What’s one thing about writing that you know now but wish you’d known when you were starting in the business?

* What’s the first thing you do when you sit down to write a news script?

* How important are professional codes (RTNDA, SPJ, NPPA) and network/station standards and practices? Do you have your own station codes?

* Share your biggest ethical dilemma in your broadcast news work and how you resolved it.
