A new ND in the #4 market, and some new information on the passing of longtime news director JIM SANDERS.

Cronan

MARGARET CRONAN has been named VP and News Director for KYW-TV, the CBS o-and-o in Philadelphia. It’s a return to KYW for Margaret, who was an EP there in the mid-90’s.

Margaret’s a former ND for WBAL-TV in Baltimore and WPBF-TV in West Palm Beach (both Hearst stations). She left Baltimore in 2003 for a variety of jobs outside of a TV newsroom. Those are outlined in her Linkedin bio, which is here. She is currently the Chief Business Development and Marketing Officer for a Philadelphia law firm.

At KYW, she replaces SUSAN SCHILLER who left in May after 14 years as ND at KYW, and almost 40 years working for CBS.

I’m told by someone close to the family of the late JIM SANDERS that it might be a few weeks before a memorial service is scheduled. We told you yesterday that Jim had died over the weekend in San Diego. He retired in 2007 for health reasons after serving as an ND in San Francisco, Sacramento, San Diego, Indianapolis, and Columbus, OH.

Sanders

Sadly, we begin with the death of longtime News Director JIM SANDERS.

Jim died over the weekend in San Diego, but I have few other details. He was ND at KNTV in San Jose/San Francisco when he collapsed in the newsroom in 2007, and retired shortly there after. During his career, he was an ND in San Diego, Sacramento, Indianapolis, and Columbus, OH.

When I get additional details, I’ll update this website.

By now, most of you likely already know about the latest station group deal which saw Media General acquire Meredith. The new company (Meredith Media General) will have to dispose of stations in six markets where there are overlaps: Portland, OR, Hartford, Nashville, Greenville/Ashville/Spartanburg, Mobile/Pensacola, and Springfield, MA. More from The Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg, which has a nice map of the markets in which the combined company will own stations.

There’s a new ND in Cincinnati. STEVE HYVONEN returns to Ohio as the next ND for Raycom Media’s WXIX-TV, the FOX affiliate there. He most recently spent seven years as ND for Graham Media’s WKMG-TV in Orlando, and has been an ND in Cleveland and Birmingham. More in this memo to the staff from GM DEBBIE BUSH.

KLAS-TV, Las Vegas, NV…and congratulations to ANOTHER station longtime who’s been moved up. TERRI FOLEY will be the next ND for this newly acquired by Nexstar CBS affiliate. She’s a 29 year veteran of the station, starting as the newsroom coordinator, and rising through the ranks to Managing Editor/Assistant ND for the last eight years. Here’s how GM LISA HOWFIELD told the staff. Terri replaces RON COMINGS who left the station in May.

WHSV-TV, Harrisonburg, VA…JAY WEBB, who’s been the morning and noon meteorologist here, is now the ND. He replaces KAY NORRED who left the station in March after seven years as ND. Jay’s in his second stint at WHSV. He left in 2006 for a weather job in Roanoke, and returned to this Gray Television owned ABC affiliate in 2013.

Obituaries:

A one time Los Angeles News Director…and longtime LA newsman…died this week at the age of 80. GERRY RUBEN spent 33 years at this Tribune owned station, much of that time as the EP of the KTLA-TV News at Ten. He was also the news director there from 1978-1981, and previously worked at KCBS-TV and KTTV. Gerry also worked in Chicago. The station remembers him here:

STEVE BRAY, who spent 2 1/2 years as ND and Chief Meteorologist for WISH-TV in Indianapolis, has joined Baron as Director of Broadcast Meteorology. Steve spent 20 years at WISH, most of them in on-air weather roles, before moving into management. He also forecast for stations in Mobile, Decatur, and Lake Charles, LA. And one-time Orlando, Tucson, Shreveport, and Knoxville ND LENA SADIWSKYJ has been named Corporate Director of Marketing and Media for a chain of auto dealerships in Knoxville. Lena’s also worked in Dallas, Phoenix, Birmingham, and in Toronto and Halifax in her native Canada. She spent four years on the faculty at the University of Missouri School of Journalism. More on her new gig here.

A one-time TV News Director who is now on the job as Dean of the Missouri School of Journalism is asking for faculty and staff input on the school’s new direction. DAVID KURPIUS spent a year as an ND in Macon, GA, before moving into academia.

Monday, August 31, 2015 UPDATE:

Two open news directors in top 40 (okay, top 41) markets have been filled, both by the promotion of longtime employees to the top job.

McGinley

In Orlando, ALLISON McGINLEY has been named ND for WKMG-TV, the  Graham Media owned CBS affiliate. She’s been the interim ND since STEVE HYVONEN departed in July after seven years as ND, shortly after the arrival of new GM JEFF HOFFMAN.

Allison has worked at the station for 22 years, beginning as a producer and working her way up to EP of Special Projects. Her Linkedin page details that career path, and TV columnist HAL BOEDEKER of the Orlando Sentinel has more on her promotion.

And at KLAS-TV in Las Vegas, another longtime station employee moves up, as TERRI FOLEY has been promoted to news director for this newly-acquired by Nexstar CBS affiliate. She replaces RON COMINGS who left the station in June after nine years as ND. Terri first joined the station in 1986 as a newsroom coordinator, has held a variety of jobs, and has been the Managing Editor/Assistant ND for the last eight years.

There is so little I can add to the volumes of coverage of this week’s tragedy involving two journalists from WDBJ-TV in Roanoke, but we do have something you won’t see anywhere else.

Before we get to that, I will repeat what I’ve heard from many of you, and that’s the admiration and respect everyone has expressed for the performance of General Manager JEFFREY MARKS and his entire staff under the most difficult circumstances.

Full disclosure: Jeff and I have been friends for more than 25 years. I was an at large member of the RTNDA Board of Directors during Jeff’s term as President.

Mark’s been the Executive News Director for Tegna’s (formerly Gannett’s, formerly Belo’s) KING-TV in Seattle for almost eight years. He spent the previous two years in Dallas, as the Assistant ND for WFAA-TV. He’s a former ND in Des Moines, assistant ND in Minneapolis, and spent several years early in his career working in radio in Minneapolis. He replaces SUSAN TULLY who was promoted to GM for another NBC o-and-o, WVIT-TV, in Hartford, after 14 years as ND here.

WSPA-TV, Spartanburg-Greenville-Ashville…we also told you on Monday that KIRK VARNER would be the next Vice President of News for this Media General owned CBS affiliate.  Here’s the news release.  Kirk most recently was the ND for WKRC-TV in Cincinnati, leaving that Sinclair owned station in July after 4+ years. Kirk’s worked as an ND in New Haven and Buffalo, in newsrooms in New York and Boston, ran newsrooms for ESPN and SportsChannel America, and was an executive for the Time Warner Cable news channels. He replaces KAREN KELLY who left the station in June after three years as ND and 17 years at the station.

Schlaerth

WFIE-TV, Evansville, IN…JOE SCHLAERTH returns to a newsroom as he’ll begin next month as the next ND for this Raycom Media owned NBC affiliate. GM JAY HIETT delivered the news to the troops in this memo. Joe spent the last 30 years in a variety of jobs at WIVB-TV in Buffalo, the last ten as news director, before leaving the then-owned-by-LIN Media-station last year. He’ll replace SCOTT GALLOWAY who was promoted to Raycom’s WTOC-TV in Savannah after four years as ND and 27 at the station.

KTVL-TV, Medford, OR…CHAD HYPES is the new news director here. He had been the Assistant ND for WOWK-TV in Charleston/Huntington, WV. Obituaries:

Legendary WWL-TV (New Orleans) General Manager MICHAEL EARLY died this week at the age of 99. He retired from the station in 1998 at the age of 82. This obituary explains why EVERYONE at the station always…and only…called him Mr. Early.

He wasn’t a news director or a general manager, but he appeared on dozens of local newscasts, as well as the Today Show and NBC Nightly News. DR. JAMES ‘RED’ DUKE was a pioneering physician in Texas who died this week at the age of 86. As a fourth year surgery resident, he was in Parkland Hospital on November 22, 1963, and treated then Texas Governor JOHN CONNALLY, who was shot along with President JOHN KENNEDY. The New York Times examines his remarkable career and includes a link to some of his TV work.

NICOLE TINDIGLIA had been the Assignment Manager for this CBS o-and-o, and has worked her way up from desk assistant. Her father was RON TINDIGLIA, a legendary news executive who died of lung cancer in 1997 at the age of 51.

A newsroom manager promotion at WPIX-TV in New York. CHUCK CARTER has been named Senior Executive Producer overseeing the morning newscast. He’s been the station’s managing editor. Details on his new job, and his background, are here.

PETER WILSON returns to a newsroom and stays in Boston as he joins WFXT-TV as Executive Producer. He spent about 20 years at Boston’s WBZ-TV in a variety of roles before leaving the station earlier this summer.

Also returning to a newsroom is DAVE GRENDZYNSKI who stays in Cleveland as he becomes the Morning EP for WOIO-TV, the Raycom Media owned CBS affiliate. He’s spent the last 7+ years as Senior Content Producer for the Cleveland Clinic. He’s also worked for another Cleveland station, as well as in Columbus, OH, and Augusta, GA.

A reunion in New Haven, CT, where DUANE BECKER joins WTNH-TV there as the Executive Producer. The move reunites him with WTNH ND KEITH CONNORS. Duane was a producer at WTHR-TV in Indianapolis when Keith was the ND there. Duane most recently has been the EP for WCSH-TV in Portland, ME.

KFSN-TV in Fresno, the ABC o-and-o there, has promoted producer SHELBY MAXWELL to Executive Producer.

LORRI ALLEN, who left KYTX-TV in Tyler, TX, after almost two years as ND earlier this year, has joined the Univeristy of Texas at Tyler. Details here.

Former KWES-TV (Midland, TX) News Director and Chief Meteorologist TOM TEFERTILLER has sued the station, claiming he was fired due to his age and health conditions. He’d been at the station for more than 20 years when he was promoted to news director earlier this year. He left the station four months later. The full story is here.

MARK GINTHER, who’s been the Executive News Director for Tegna’s KING-TV in Seattle for almost eight years, is leaving to return to Dallas/Ft. Worth as the next ND for KXAS-TV, the NBC o-and-o.  Here’s the memo sent to the staff.

Before Seattle, Mark had spent almost two years as the Assistant ND for WFAA-TV in Dallas. He’s a former news director in Des Moines (WHO-TV), spent six years at KSTP-TV in Minneapolis/St. Paul as the Assistant News Director, and had also worked at WCCO-TV there. He spent much of his early career in radio in Minnesota.

KIRK VARNER will be the next news director for WSPA-TV, the Media General owned CBS affiliate in Spartanburg-Greenville-Asheville.

Kirk most recently was the ND for WKRC-TV in Cincinnati, a job he left in early July after 4+ years. He’s also been an ND in New Haven and Buffalo, worked in New York and Boston, ran newsrooms for ESPN and SportsChannel America, and was an executive for the Time Warner Cable news channels.

Lansing

Longtime broadcaster and old friend JOHN LANSING becomes the CEO of the Broadcasting Board of Governors. That’s the government agency that oversees Voice of America and Radio Free Europe, etc. More from the NY Times. In that job, he replaces ANDREW LACK who left after six weeks to become President of NBC News. John’s extensive background (which includes ND jobs in Chicago, Minneapolis, St. Louis, and Kalamazoo, a GM job in Cleveland, Station Manager in Detroit and several high level executive jobs at Scripps) is detailed in his Linkedin page. Of note: he began his career as a photographer.

JENNIFER BROCKMAN returns home to Denver as EP for Tribune’s KDVR/KWGN-TV. She’s been working in New York in a variety of jobs for the past six years, and has also worked in Chicago, Cleveland, Kansas City, Birmingham, and Topeka.

TIM BLACK, a one-time GM and News Director for WEVV-TV in Evansville, has been named VP of Development for WNIN-TV, the PBS operation in Evansville.

Monday, August 17, 2015 UPDATE:

There’s a new news director in the number two market today.

Dallman

BILL DALLMAN will begin September 8th as the next ND for KCBS/KCAL-TV in Los Angeles, the CBS o-and-o duopoly there.

It’s a return to a local newsroom for Bill, who’s spent the last two years as VP/News for Fox Sports 1. But before that he was an ND for FOX o-and-o’s in his native Minneapolis and in Denver, and was an ND in Grand Rapids, MI. He’s also worked in Sacramento, produced for another Minneapolis station, and began his career as a reporter/anchor on Austin, MN.

Bill told me today that being an ND in Los Angeles was ‘a dream job’.

Here’s the news release announcing his hire.

Bill replaces a good friend, SCOTT DIENER. They worked together at KSTP-TV in Minneapolis. Scott left KCBS in June after five years as ND there.

By the way, this is NOT the large market news director position I was expecting to be filled in the next day or so. So there could be more news on the horizon.

Hello from San Francisco and the AAJA conference, where it was my pleasure to see some old friends and meet some news managers for the first time.

And there are some new news managers in our industry this week, as FOUR new news directors were hired this week. And there are just TWO new openings, so the count of open ND jobs drops to 39.

TWO of those open ND jobs are among the FIVE paid help wanted ads this week.

We’ve updated our list of Other News Management Openings, have a number of GMs on the move, and, in our Names in the News, it is my pleasure to finally use the words ‘alligator’ and ‘news director’ in the same sentence.

KOLD-TV, Tucson, AZ…MICHELLE GERMANO is leaving this Raycom Media owned station to become ND for WTVD-TV in Raleigh-Durham. More on that below.

WCHS-TV, Charleston, WV…this Sinclair owned ABC affiliate is advertising for a new news director. My records show that MATT SNYDER has been the ND here since 2006. I do not know if he took another job or just left the station.

Also, please note the Paid Help Wanted Ad below for the news director opening at WCYB-TV in Bristol, VA. We told you last week that JOHN SOARES was leaving that job later this year to move to California for family reasons.

KXTX-TV, Dallas, TX…SANDRA THOMAS starts Monday as the new news director for this Telemundo affiliate. She’s been out of news for two years, but previously served as the ND for the Telemundo affiliate in Los Angeles (KEVA-TV) from 1994-1997. More on Sandra’s career in this story from Media Moves. At KXTX, she replaces KAREN MENDEZ who was promoted to news director of another Telemundo station, WNJU-TV.

Germano

WTVD-TV, Raleigh/Durham, NC…we told you earlier this week that MICHELLE GERMANO has been hired as the next news director for this ABC o-and-o. She’s been the ND for KOLD-TV in Tucson for the past 12 years, part of her 15 year career at the station. GM NICK ULMER broke the news to the staff in this memo.  Michelle’s also worked as a producer in Houston and in Corpus Christi. At WTVD, she replaces 17 year station vet ROB ELMORE. Rob was promoted to ND for another ABC o-and-o, KABC-TV in Los Angeles, in May.

Geraghty

WKRC-TV, Cincinnati, OH…TIM GERAGHTY will be back in a newsroom on Monday as he takes over this Sinclair owned CBS affiliate. Tim left his job as Senior Director of News for Central Florida News 13 in January after three years there. He’s also been an ND in Miami, Sacramento and Grand Rapids, MI, and worked in Kansas City, Kalamazoo, Decatur, IL, and Columbia, MO. He replaces KIRK VARNER who left in early July after more than four years as ND.

Dello Stritto

KTNV-TV, Las Vegas, NV…MIKE DELLO STRITTO returns to this ABC affiliate as news director. The staff memo from GM JIM PRATHER is here. Earlier in his career he reported for KTNV. Mike’s been working as the Managing Editor for KPIX-TV in San Francisco for the past 18 months. He left Las Vegas in 2006 for a reporter’s job in Sacramento, where he moved into management, eventually becoming the Assistant News Director. He’s also worked in West Palm Beach and Chattanooga. Mike replaces KARIN MOVESIAN who left this Scripps’ owned station to become ND at KSDK-TV in St. Louis after eight years here.

Obituary:

We told you last week of the death of longtime Syracuse newsman BILL CAREY, who died of lung cancer at the age of 61. Bill reported for most of his career, but did serve as ND for WTVH-TV in Syracuse for several years.

Old friend TOM BIER, who started at WISC-TV in Madison as the weekend sports anchor 41 years ago and rose to news director and later general manager, retired today. He also served as Chair of (then) RTNDA in 1990. The station paid him tribute in this editorial.

General Manager News:

ANNE OULLETTE has been promoted from Controller to General Manager for CBS’s WCCO-TV in Minneapolis. She’s been at the station for 12 years. More here.

LISA HOWFIELD, who left KSNV-TV in Las Vegas shortly after Sinclair bought that NBC station, has signed on as GM for KLAS-TV, the newly-acquired-by-Nexstar CBS affiliate there. She replaces EMILY NEILSON who retired after 35 years at the station, the last 12 as General Manager, and ten years before that as News Director. Here’s the news release.

KITV (Honolulu/ABC) General Manager ANDREW JACKSON is leaving for a job with a Hawaii based marketing company.

And KEVIN HARLAN returns to Nexstar’s WMBD-TV in Peoria as General Manager. He held that same job from 2002-2006.
