A veteran news director rejoins his former general manager in a surprising move just announced…and a name change for the part of the company now called Gannett.

ELBERT TUCKER, the news director for WBNS-TV in Columbus, OH, heads west on I-70 to become the next ND for WISH-TV here in Indianapolis. The move reunites Elbert with WISH General Manager LES VANN: they held the same jobs at WKRC-TV in Cincinnati.

Elbert leaves WBNS, the Dispatch owned CBS affiliate in Ohio’s capital city, and will now compete against Dispatch’s only other station, WTHR-TV, the NBC affiliate in Indiana’s capital.

He spent five years as ND at WBNS, and nine of his 18 years at WKRC as the ND there. He also had been the Assistant ND and EP for that ABC affiliate. Elbert’s also worked in Birmingham and Chattanooga.

He’ll start at WISH after the May rating period and replaces STEVE BRAY who will leave the station after 2 1/2 years as ND and 20 at the station. Steve led the staff through a news expansion following the loss of the station’s CBS affiliation at the start of the year. WISH is now a CW affiliate.

TWO new ND openings, and FOUR new news directors leave us with 27 stations looking for news directors. TWO of those openings are featured in one of our THREE paid help wanted ads.

TWO of the new NDs are in Knoxville. There are TWO stations (still) looking for NDs in Los Angeles. And TWO stations in Ft. Wayne are also looking for NDs.

Sadly, we also have TWO obituaries of legendary broadcasters who may not be well known to newer journalists but both had big impacts on our business. KRNV-TV, Reno, NV…MATT McCONICO has left Sinclair’s NBC affiliate in what the locals call the “Biggest Little City in the World.” He’s been the ND here for more than four years and had been the Assistant ND before his promotion. Matt’s also worked in Ft. Myers (three stations), Green Bay and Eau Claire, WI.

KION-TV, Monterey/Salinas, CA…LESLIE MILLER is leaving this CBS affiliate to take a new job in Florida. She’s been the ND here for just over a year. Leslie began her career as a reporter, working in Des Moines, Orlando, and Phoenix, and worked in management positions in Atlanta, Phoenix (two stations) Tampa (two stations), Houston and New Orleans. KENS-TV, San Antonio, TX…JACK ACOSTA moves within Gannett and across Texas to become news director of the company’s CBS affiliate here. He’s currently the Assistant ND of another Gannett/CBS station, KHOU-TV in Houston, where his co-workers read about his new job in this memo. Jack’s worked here for ten years, first as a producer, then EP, before a promotion two years ago to Assistant News Director. He’s also worked for another Houston station and in New York. At KENS, he replaces TRISTON SANDERS who left the station earlier this year (after two years as ND) to become a consultant for Magid.

Jennings

WBIR-TV, Knoxville, TN…Gannett has also promoted Assistant News Director MARTHA JENNINGS to news director for this NBC affiliate. She’s been the AND there since last November. Martha earlier worked as the Nightside EP for WFLA-TV in Tampa, and has also worked as a producer in Raleigh and Charleston, SC. At WBIR, she replaces CHRISTY MORENO who left a few months ago (after 2+ years here) to become ND for sister station KUSA-TV in Denver.

WVLT-TV, Knoxville, TN…TONY BERNHARDT has been named news director for this Gray TV owned CBS affiliate. Tony’s currently the Assistant News Director for WTNH-TV in New Haven/Hartford, CT. He’s also worked in Washington, DC, Tampa, Orlando, and Colorado Springs. At WVLT, he will replace LENA SADIWSKYJ who’s been the news director here for the last four years.  Lena will leave the station after the May book.

Wordlaw

WVLA/WGMB-TV, Baton Rouge, LA…GARY WORDLAW returns to a newsroom as the news director for this NBC/FOX duopoly operated by Nexstar. Gary’s been an ND in Washington and Baltimore, and a general manager in Seattle, New Orleans, Syracuse, and Tallahassee. He’s also worked in Chattanooga. In Baton Rouge, he replaces DAVID A’QUIN who’s been ND here for more than eight years. David had been an anchor at the station before being promoted. He earlier had worked as a weather anchor in Lafayette, LA.

Obituaries:

Slatter

BILL SLATTER died last Sunday (April 12th) in Washington, DC. He was 87. Many of you didn’t know Bill, but he had two very different careers. First as an anchor and reporter in New Orleans, where he once interviewed LEE HARVEY OSWALD a few months before the JFK assassination. He later became a talent scout for NBC. In the pre-videotape (and, obviously, pre-internet world) he travelled the country meeting with NBC news directors to ask about good talent in their market. More in this story.

Legendary photographer DARREL BARTON died Wednesday after a brief illness. He was 73. Darrel was twice named the Photographer of the Year and taught hundreds of photographers at NPPA seminars. That group honored him with this obituary.

WTVJ-TV in Miami, the NBC owned station there, has promoted Senior Producer DAVID HENDERSON to EP of the 5 o’clock news. ELIZABETH FLORES, who was the 11:00 EP, was also promoted to Senior EP supervising the 6:00 and 11:00 news.

TYSON MILANOVICH crosses the street in Phoenix to become the AM EP for Scripps’ KNXV-TV. He had been working for KTVK-TV.

ANA MARIA LAMAS returns to Texas as the EP for KEYE-TV in Austin. She had been working as the Managing Editor for the Telemundo station in Los Angeles.

Finally, legendary newsman AL PRIMO was one of six broadcasters recognized Wednesday with a Ward L. Quaal Leadership Award. The honor is given by the Broadcasters Foundation of America and was presented at a Wednesday morning breakfast at the Encore Hotel in Las Vegas during the NAB conference. I was honored to be one of Al’s guests at the event, and snapped the photo below. More details about the award…and the other honorees…in this news release.

General Manager News:

Two news directors turned General Managers are leaving their jobs.

At KDVR/KWGN-TV in Denver, PETER MARONEY announced his retirement in this memo to the staff. He plans to stay in Denver and work on other projects. Peter’s also been a GM in Portland, OR, and Richmond, VA, a news director in San Francisco, and also worked in Boston, Houston, and Minneapolis. More in this article from the Denver Post.

EMILY NEILSON will leave as GM of Las Vegas CBS affiliate KLAS-TV in a few months when her replacement is found. Emily’s been here for 35 years, beginning as a part-time clerk in the traffic department, before moving into the news department as a secretary and eventually rising to ND before her promotion to GM. She told TVSpy that she’s been thinking of leaving for two years but wanted to complete the transition to new owner Nexstar.

JOE DENK is the new GM at Nexstar’s WATN-WLMT-WJKT-TV in Memphis. He’ll over see the ABC and CW stations in Memphis and the FOX affiliate in Jackson, MS. Joe’s been the GM at the company’s WFRV-TV in Green Bay. He’s also been a GM in Rockford, IL.

Greetings from Las Vegas, site of the annual NAB convention. I hope to see many of you here.

RTDNA is sponsoring a (very) informal gathering on Tuesday night, beginning at 9:00 PM at the Parasol Down bar at the Wynn Hotel and Casino. That’s the night before the ‘RTDNA @ NAB’ seminar which will take place on Wednesday. I hope to see you there.

Turning to our normal business, not much activity this week, with ONE news director departure announced, and TWO ND jobs filled (one with an asterisk!), with another consolidated with a sister station.

Those changes mean 27 stations are now looking for NDs.

WISH-TV, Indianapolis, IN…the end of the May rating book will bring the curtain down on the 20 year career here for STEVE BRAY. He’s been the ND for 2 1/2 years, and held several management positions before moving into the ND job. Steve oversaw news expansion earlier this year after the station lost its CBS affiliation and linked up with the CW network, He first joined the station as the weekend meteorologist, was promoted to Chief Meteorologist four years later, and maintained the title even though he rarely appeared on air over the last few years. The Indianapolis Business Journal has more. Steve’s also worked in Mobile, Lake Charles, and Decatur.

Speaking of Indiana ND openings, please note the new ad below for the opening in Ft. Wayne. We told you last week that PETER NEUMANN is retiring from WTPA-WISE-TV.

Newly Named News Directors:

Chavez

KTSM-TV, El Paso, TX…REY CHAVEZ returns to El Paso and KTSM as the next ND for this Nexstar-owned NBC affiliate. Rey has an extensive background, much of it in Spanish language stations in large markets. It’s all detailed here in his Linkedin page. But 30 years ago he worked as a director for KTSM. He replaces LAUREN MACIAS-CERVANTES who left the station last month after more than four years as ND.

WEAU-TV, Eau Claire, WI...I think that ANDREW FEFER has been promoted to news director here. After all, that’s what his bio on the station website says. Being old-fashioned, I emailed him to confirm his promotion and to ask when it had happened. His response: “I’m sorry, but I have no comment.” O-kay. He did give me the phone number for the GM, who I’m guessing isn’t in on Sunday. If in fact the station’s website is correct, Andrew replaces MIKE LOPEZ who was there about two years. Andrew’s also worked in Wausau and Green Bay. WEAU is an NBC affiliate owned by Gray Television.

Also, please note that we’ve removed the NE opening for WDAZ-TV in Grand Forks, ND from our list of openings. JEFF NELSON, who oversees sister station WDAY-TV, will now oversee WDAZ-TV as well. Jeff’s been the ND at WDAY for more than ten years.

Obituaries:

ALAN DePETRO, who once served as news director for WKBF-TV in Cleveland, died this week at the age of 81. Not familiar with WKBF?  Wikipedia to the rescue!  Alan spent almost 25 years as a reporter for WEWS-TV in Cleveland, which detailed his passing here in a report which includes links to some of his stories. Alan also worked in Youngstown and once led a fund-raising drive for new uniforms for his high school band.

And I’m sorry to report the death of my mother-in-law, BEVERLY SHIPPEE, who died in her sleep Thursday morning at her Detroit home. She was 87. In addition to my wife, KAREN BURNS, she is survived by another daughter, MARGARET KNIGHT, and a son, JAMES SHIPPEE. More in this obituary.

Investigative Reporters and Editors released the names of the winners of its annual awards completion, including a number of TV winners. The honors will be presented at the annual IRE convention in Philadelphia this June. (As I’ve mentioned before, the IRE conference is, in my opinion, terrific. If you’re working in a newsroom and haven’t been, you should make every effort to go.) Here’s the list of winners.

Kennedy

SEAN KENNEDY has a new job but doesn’t have to move. He’s been named the Assistant ND at KSWB-TV, the Tribune-owned FOX affiliate in San Diego. Sean spent almost ten years in the same role at KGTV in San Diego. Before that, he was an ND in Shreveport for five years. He’s previously worked in Dallas as an EP for the now-defunct Texas Cable News, and in Springfield, MO.

Carr

Longtime newsman FORREST CARR has hit an unfortunate bump in the road in his battle against cancer. He tells the whole story in his latest blog post, which you can find by clicking here. Forrest has twice been a news director in Tucson, as well as in Tampa, Ft. Myers, and Albuquerque. He’s been working in radio in Tucson, and pursuing his first love, fiction writing.

General Manager News:

One time CLTV (Chicago) news director STEVE FARBER has joined Weigel Broadcasting as its SVP of Operations. Steve spent more than 20 years at Tribune Broadcasting in a variety of roles, as you will learn by reading this story.

TIM BENNETT has been named GM of WUPA-TV in Atlanta. That’s a CW affiliate that’s owned by CBS. He’ll continue as Director of Sales for the SE region for the CBS TV Stations.

Thursday, April 9, 2015 UPDATE:

A news director who has a most unusual background…and has gone through a most unusual last few months…is leaving his top 30 market ND job at the end of the rating period.

Bray

STEVE BRAY, who’s been the ND at Media General’s WISH-TV in Indianapolis, will leave this CW affiliate at the end of the May rating period. He just led the news department through an affiliation change: WISH lost its CBS partnership at the end of 2014 and is now a CW affiliate.

And his background is different than most: he first joined the station 20 years ago as a meteorologist and was promoted to Chief Meteorologist four years later, a title he’s held even while serving as ND. His Linkedin page has the whole story.

Steve told me he’s going to take the next few weeks to decompress and figure out the ‘next chapter’.

This week’s newsletter comes from our home office in Indianapolis, just 1.25 miles from Lucas Oil Stadium, home of tomorrow night’s basketball championship game. Not sure if I’m going yet, but I did go last night, and the second game was pretty exciting.

Perhaps not quite as exciting, unless you’re one of the people involved, are the TWO newly named news directors in this week’s newsletter, or the THREE people who’re moving on, including the retirement of a long-time Indiana news director.

Those changes mean 28 stations are now looking for NDs.

The Scripps/Journal merger is complete, and that means a shuffle of regional managers and THREE new GMs at the company’s stations. CBS is moving one of its o-and-o GMs to a new market, and Nexstar is promoting one of its GMs. Those stories are below, along with news about a former Macon News Director who’s been named Dean of the the University of Missouri School of Journalism.

WSMV-TV, Nashville, TN…after 8 1/2 years as ND for this Meredith owned NBC affiliate, MATTHEW HILK has left the station. His actual title was Director of News and Creative Services. Before moving to Music City, Matthew was the assistant news director for stations in Pittsburgh and Birmingham, a producer in Orlando, and a reporter in Louisville, Charleston, WV, and Oak Hill, WV.

KTNV, Las Vegas, NV…we told you earlier this week that KARIN MOVESIAN was leaving this now owned by Scripps ABC affiliate for a new job in St. Louis. More on that below. Karin was the ND here for almost eight years.

Neumann

WPTA/WISE-TV, Ft. Wayne, IN…longtime news director PETER NEUMANN will retire at the end of May after 31 1/2 consecutive years as a news director at just two stations. He’s been at the helm of this duopoly for 9 1/2 years, spent 21+ years running the news department of WEAR-TV in Pensacola, and two years at KOLR-TV in Springfield, MO. Peter’s also worked in Phoenix, Indianapolis, Alpena, MI, and Muncie, IN, where he attended Ball State University. He sent this nice note to his staff. Granite owns WPTA and runs WISE, (owned by Malara Broadcasting), and Quincy is in the process of buying them.

Newly Named News Directors:

Movesian

KSDK-TV, St. Louis, MO…KARIN MOVESIAN returns to her home market as the next ND here. (She’s a native of nearby Belleville, IL, and once worked at KMOV-TV here). Karin returns home from Las Vegas, where she’s spent the last eight years as ND for KTNV-TV. She’s also worked in Chicago (two stations), Detroit, Minneapolis, and San Antonio. Karin will replace MIKE SHIPLEY who will retire (from KSDK, not from working) once she’s settled. Mike’s been ND almost 15 years, and first joined the station in 1981 when I hired him as the night assignment editor. KSDK is an NBC affiliate owned by Gannett.

Weindel

KECI/KCFW/KTVM-TV, (NBC Montana), Missoula, MT…JULIE WEINDEL returns to the ND chair to run this Bonten Media cluster of NBC affiliates. She’s been the Assistant ND here for the past six months, and has been an ND in Boise and Dayton. Julie’s also worked in Cincinnati and Tulsa. GM DICK REINGOLD (who’s being promoted to GM of the company’s WCTI-TV in New Bern, NC) sent this message to the staff. Julie replaces CHRIS GROGAN who’s been named Assistant ND for WSYX/WTTE-TV in Columbus, OH.

A former small market news director will be the next Dean of the University of Missouri School of Journalism. DAVID KURPIUS will take over this summer, replacing the aptly named DEAN MILLS who’s been the Dean there for 25 years. Kurpius is currently a professor of mass communication and associate vice chancellor for enrollment management at Louisiana State University, but earlier in his career he was a reporter, producer and then news director in Macon, GA. Monday, March 30, 2015 UPDATE:

Some news director changes and two former NDs-turned GMs on the move in today’s UPDATE.

KARIN MOVESIAN, who’s been the ND for Journal’s-soon-to-be-Scripps’ KTNV (ABC) in Las Vegas since 2007, has been named news director for KSDK-TV in St. Louis.  Karin grew up in the St. Louis area, was graduated from St. Louis University, and earlier in her career worked at KMOV-TV.  She’s also worked as an Assistant ND in San Antonio, and as an EP in Chicago (two stations), Detroit, and Minneapolis.

Shipley

At KSDK, she’ll replace MIKE SHIPLEY who announced last October that he’d retire from the station (but not from working) after his replacement was hired.  Mike’s worked for this Gannett-owned NBC station for almost 34 years, joining in 1981 as the Night Assignment Editor He’s been ND here since 2000.  Full disclosure:  Mike and I worked together at the campus radio station at Missouri, and I hired him at KSDK.

Hilk

In Nashville, WSMV-TV News Director MATTHEW HILK has left that Meredith owned NBC affiliate. He’s been the news director (actual title: Director of News and Creative Services) since June, 2006. Finally, congratulations to longtime broadcaster DICK REINGOLD who is being promoted to VP/GM for Bonten Media’s stations in New Bern-Greenville-Washington, NC. Dick’s currently the GM for Bonten’s cluster of NBC stations in Montana. His background includes four news director jobs, a GM position at WUSA-TV in Washington, and other interesting jobs. He most recently worked as an EP for Al Jazeera America’s news channel. Marc’s a former ND in Raleigh, Las Vegas, and Santa Barbara/San Luis Obispo, and he’s worked in Los Angeles, Dallas, and Minneapolis. At FIOS1, he replaces JERRY ANDREWS who was ND here for two years.

KMGH-TV, Denver, CO…we told you earlier this week that LINDSAY RADFORD will join this Scripps’ owned ABC affiliate as ND. It’s a return to Colorado for Lindsay, who worked for another station in Denver and in Colorado Springs earlier in her career. She’s spent the last seven years as ND for KSTP-TV in Minneapolis, the Hubbard-owned ABC station there, which she first joined in 2003 as an EP. Lindsay’s also worked in Hartford and El Paso. KATU-TV, Portland, OR…KYANN LEWIS returns to Portland to become news director for this Sinclair owned ABC affiliate. She’s currently the EP for KNTV, the NBC o-and-o in San Jose/San Francisco. Earlier in her career she worked for more than seven years for KPTV and KGW-TV in Portland. She’s also been a news director in Houston (KIAH-TV) and Greenville, SC (WHNS-TV). At KATU, she replaces TIFFANI LUPENSKI who left in January (after two years as ND and four years at the station) to become ND for KGTV in San Diego.

WPTZ/WNNE-TV, Plattsburgh, NY/Burlington, VT…MICHAEL LaFLESH has been promoted within Hearst to become news director here. Michael’s a longtime Hearst employee, spending the last 2 1/2 years as EP for WTAE-TV in Pittsburgh. He also worked for Hearst’s WLWT-TV in Cincinnati for ten years, seven as the Nightside Executive Producer. Michael’s also worked in Dayton. Two new EPs to tell you about at WTMJ-TV in Milwaukee.

LAURA MATOVINA moves from nearby Chicago to become the new morning EP for this NBC affiliate. She’s been the morning producer for WFLD-TV in Chicago. She’s also worked in Rockford, IL, and for another Milwaukee station. And NICOLE BUCKLEY will join the staff after the May book. She’ll be the evening EP here. Nicole currently works at WTMJ’s sister station in Ft. Myers, FL, where she’s an EP. She began her career in Springfield, IL.

If you missed our UPDATE item earlier this week, we’ll remind you that congratulations are in order for two-time Salt Lake City news director TANYA VEA, who’s been promoted to VP/General Manager for KSL-TV there.  Here’s the link to the story from the KSL website. She first joined KSL in 2010 as ND. She earlier served as the ND for KUTV in SLC. Little known fact: Tanya’s the niece of WXIA-TV (Atlanta) ND JENNIFER RIGBY.

LYLE SCHULZE will be the next GM for Raycom’s WIS-TV in Columbia, SC. He’s currently running WCTI-TV in Greenville/New Bern/Washington, Bonten Media’s ABC affiliate. He’s also been a GM in Palm Springs, Lansing, and Evansville, and has worked in Houston, Charlotte and Milwaukee.
