Wednesday, August 10, 2022 UPDATE:

Greetings:

A veteran newswoman stays in California and gets her first news director’s job.

Gearhart

Gearhart

BOBBI GEARHART will be the next ND for Scripps’ KGTV (ABC) in San Diego. She’s currently the managing editor for KNBC-TV in Los Angeles, where she’s worked for nine years, beginning as an EP in 2013. GM LEON CLARK advised the staff of its new boss via this email, in which you will learn that Bobbi was graduated from San Diego State University, so a return to San Diego for her.

She’s also worked for another San Francisco station, as well as in Denver, Austin, TX, and Palm Springs. The full story is on her Linkedin page.

Bobbi replaces TODD REED who left the station in late June after four months as ND.

We’ll see you this weekend with our full newsletter.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Greetings:

Published reports estimated about 5,000 people attended this week’s combined NABJ/NAHJ convention at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas. And 5,000 is about the number of steps attendees need to get TO the convention from the entrance of the hotel.

It’s the first in-person for many since 2019, and you’d hear a lot of ‘Great to see you’ comments which seemed a little more heartfelt this year. I certainly enjoyed seeing some old friends and meeting new ones.

During this last week, a hiring spree found SIX new news directors named to jobs, with just ONE new opening, bringing our list of open jobs to a lower-than-it’s-been-in-a-long-time 26!

Just one Paid Help Wanted Ad this week, for an Assistant ND job out west.

Our streak of no obituaries came to a halt, with SIX deaths to tell you about, including the sudden passing of a Tampa chief photographer and a former GM and network executive. Those are all below.

Lots of GM news from Gray, and just THREE items in Names in the News, one of which is a fun list of TV people who have run for public office.

Check that and all the news below.

Obituaries:

Sadly, lots of obituaries this week.

Lamison

Lamison

Our sympathy to the folks at Tampa’s WFLA-TV on the sudden passing this week of chief photographer PAUL LAMISON. A 29+ year veteran of that Tegna Nexstar owned NBC affiliate, Paul died Wednesday at the age of 57 of an apparent heart attack. He was well known in the market as a part of the station’s morning team. More in this obituary. Paul is survived by a wife and daughters.

Severino

Severino

President JOHN KENNEDY (and others) said “Success has many fathers, but failure is an orphan.” Such it is with claims to have invented Eyewitness News. One who has been called that was longtime TV executive JOHN SEVERINO, who died July 27th at 85. He ran stations in Los Angeles and Chicago, was Presdient of ABC, head of the CBS stations group, and much more. Details from The Hollywood Reporter and in this obituary.

Hogan

Hogan

JACK HOGAN, a legendary Western Michigan news director who also served as President of (then) RTNDA, died Thursday. He was 89. Jack was the longtime ND for WZZM-TV in Grand Rapids and later worked for the city. One of the many people he hired was meteorologist BILL STEFFEN who years later went across town to WOOD-TV where he wrote this remembrance. Be sure to check out Jack’s references for a post retirement job.

Pritchett

Pritchett

STEVE PRITCHETT began at KVII-TV in Amarillo, TX, as a reporter, producer and anchor. He later became news director there for six years, during which time (according to this obituary) the station was number one. He died Tuesday at the age of 65. After leaving KVII, in 1994 he joined the Amarillo Economic Development Corporation, leaving as Vice-President after 22 years.

Hamilton

Hamilton

Longtime Fargo broadcaster DOUG HAMILTON lost his battle with cancer this week. He was 72. Doug was a reporter, producer, anchor and news director for two Fargo stations that are now branded as Valley News Live. This story is from that website. He most recently worked for Prairie Public Radio in Fargo. Doug was also active in the Fargo-Moorhead Community Theater.

Walorski

Walorski

Indiana Congresswoman JACKIE WALORSKI, 58, was one of four people killed in a head-on collision in northern Indiana Wednesday. She was a passenger in a car driven by ZACHARY POTTS, head of the St. Joseph Country Republican Party. Potts and another aide, EMMA THOMPSON, also died, as did the driver of the other car. We tell you this because Walorksi spent four years as a reporter for WSBT-TV in South Bend earlier in her career. She was first elected to Congress in 2012.

Names in the News:

Kiss

Kiss

Philadelphia’s CBS o-and-o, KYW-TV, has named RICHARD KISS as its next Assistant News Director. He comes from WCAU-TV (NBC owned) in Philadelphia where he was an executive producer. Richard is following new KYW ND KATHY GERROW who left WCAU last month to become ND at KYW. Richard’s also worked at News 12 in New York and for WDSU-TV in New Orleans

There’s a new effort to help journalists improve coverage of crime, public safety, and the courts. It includes a year long mentorship program. More from the Nieman Lab website.

Finally, a fun list thanks to the Columbia Journalism Review: a list of journalists who have run for office,. Check it out here.

General Manager News and Notes:

Ingram

Ingram

TIM INGRAM‘s departure from Gray Television (reported first in this space last week) spurred a lot of changes, as the company has tagged TEN current GMs for new roles as Regional Vice Presidents/General Managers, where they will continue running their stations and overseeing others. And a GM who already had that title had a few more stations added to his portfolio. The list is too long for this space, but NOT for this Gray TV news release.

Speaking of Gray news releases, here’s a two-fer. The company promoted new general managers at two of its stations, KWCH/KCSW-TV (CBS/CW) in Wichita, and WGGB/WSHM-TV (ABC/CBS) in Springfield, MA. DAVID HERRMANN is the winner in Wichita, while Station Manager/News Director PATIENCE HETTRICK has been bumped up in Springfield. I have not yet been able to confirm if that creates an ND opening there.

July 31, 2022

Greetings:

We’re a little late this week due to out of town company and (okay, I’ll be honest) the NASCAR race in town.

But we have some interesting items, including what I believe is the first report of a senior management change at Gray. That’s in our GM section below.

Also this week, TWO new news directors (both promotions at Scripps stations) and ONE new opening, leaving our list of open ND jobs at 31.

There are THREE Paid Help Wanted ads, a new one for an Assistant ND job in a top 15 market and two for EP openings.

Once again, happy there are no obituaries this week.

In addition to the Gray TV item teased above, a longtime GM retires in Houston and there’s a new GM in Oklahoma City. That’s in our GM news section.

In Names in the News, a former Casper, WY news director retires from a different job for which he was much better known. We’l tell you about a departure from Extra!, a new job for a former RTDNA chair, and the daughter in law of a longtime broadcast gets promoted at a New York o-and-o.

And if you’re going to NABJ/NAHJ this week, I hope to see you there, perhaps at this reception hosted by the University of Missouri School of Journalism.

The Missouri School of Journalism invites you to attend an
Alumni and Friends Reception
at the NABJ/NAHJ Convention
Featuring
Ron Stodghill, Meredith Chair in Service Journalism
Friday, August 5, 2022 – 6:00–7:30 p.m.
in the Reno Room at the Flamingo Las Vegas Hotel & Casino
3555 S. Las Vegas Boulevard
The reception will feature light hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar.

KSTU-TV, Salt Lake City…this Scripps owned FOX affiliate has promoted interim news director STACEY ROBERTS. Here’s the note from GM TIM ERMISH. July 24, 2022

Greetings:

Lots of material in this week’s edition, with something for everyone.

We have FIVE new news directors to share, though THREE of them have been in place for a few weeks or even months. ONE of those new NDs is a familiar name who’s been an ND in a number of markets. And there’s ONE new opening.

Those changes drop our list of stations with ND openings to 32.

There are THREE Paid Help Wanted ads, all for EP openings in markets ranging from top ten to top 50.

We have a new advertiser for a start-up business which may be of interest to those of you struggling to hire producers. It’s a unique effort by a former ND. Check out the ad just below.

And Sciline is back…that’s the non profit organization hoping to improve coverage of science issues…they have a new schedule of interviews you can book on a variety of topics.

I’m grateful there are no obituaries this week.

We have THREE items about general managers on the move…two going, and one coming to a new job.

And check out Names in the News. It’s easy to bash consultants, but we have a story about one who has done something praiseworthy. We’ll also tell you about a potential new owner for the Black News Channel, CBS expanding news to its CW and independent stations, a longtime news manager leaving Chicago to return to Texas, and a Denver station that sprung a surprise on its news director during a staff meeting.

Like I said, something for everyone. Have a great week.

WTKR-TV, Norfolk, VA…this Scripps owned CBS affiliate is looking for a new news director to replace GERARDO LOPEZ. Gerardo just joined the station less than a year ago, coming from Scripps’ KJRH-TV in Tulsa. I’m told he’s leaving for a new job in the Northeast, but being old-fashioned, I’ll wait until I can confirm that before publishing. By my count, his new job will be his 14TH since 2000.

Obituaries:

Aslam

Aslam

We included this in an UPDATE last Tuesday, but for those of you who missed it, WABC-TV (New York-ABC-owned) posted a story on the death of news director, REHAN ASLAM. That story came after we published Sunday and I wanted to make sure you had a chance to see it. Rehan died at the age of 47 of an aggressive form of brain cancer. Our sympathy to his wife and son, as well as his co-workers at WABC.

Collins

Collins

We also told you in UPDATES of the death of longtime Missouri broadcaster and educator KENT COLLINS, who lost a fight with pancreatic cancer. He was 74. Kent trained hundreds, if not thousands, of journalists across the country and the world. The son of two newspaper journalists, Kent was a journalist to the end, writing his own obituary, included at the bottom of this facebook post from his son. Kent served two terms as ND for KOMU-TV, which aired this remembrance. And the University owned Columbia Missourian ran this story. New details this edition: Kent co-founded the job site Medialine, wrote a nationally syndicated column, The Senior Forum, for 23 years and in 2019 was honored with Edward Bliss Award for Distinguished Broadcast Journalism Education by AEJMC.

A celebration of life is planned later this year. He’s survived by his wife, BEE, sons JUSTIN and JEREMY, daughter SUMMER, and thousands of friends and former students.

BILL BALCH, who worked as producer for (then) KSD-TV (NBC) in St. Louis in the 70’s and 80’s, died June 30th. He was 92 years old. Bill began his career in radio in Minneapolis, then moved to KSD Radio in St. Louis before switching to the TV side in a shared newsroom. We worked together while I was a producer and EP there and I remember he was quite a gentleman.

Some of the staff even wore Hawaiian shirts in his honor.
