Greetings:

Two former Meredith executives have a formed a new firm to invest in companies in the broadcast field, and their first acquisition may surprise you.

Connell

The new entity is called Glass City Talent, and its first purchase is longtime placement and coaching company Talent Dynamics. Longtime Talent Dynamics principal SANDRA CONNELL will continue as President. She formed TD 25 years ago, when it spun off from AR&D. Sandra has been involved in our business for more than 40 years and has helped countless people, both on the air and behind the scenes.

The principals of the new company are former Meredith President PATRICK McCREERY and former SVP of Content GARY BROWN.

McCreery

Patrick first joined Meredith in 2002 as a Special Projects EP at KPHO-TV in Phoenix. He moved up the ranks quickly. Among his jobs were news director and then GM for KPTV in Portland. He spent several years as VP News and Marketing before becoming President in 2018. Patrick held that job until Meredith was sold at the end of 2021. He’ll lead business development and serve as an advisor to TD.

Brown

GARY BROWN will be the CEO for Talent Dynamics. His last role at Meredith was SVP of Content but he had worked for the company several times over the years. He was a news director in several markets, was Vice President of News for Newport Television, and spent five years working as an agent. As to the “Glass City” reference in the name? McCreery and Brown grew up in Toledo, nicknamed The Glass City for its significant role in glass manufacturing. And they met while working at WTOL-TV there in the 90’s (after my time there, btw.)

JEFF ROSETTI has left Tegna’s WTHR-TV (NBC) in Indianapolis after three-plus years as news director and eleven years at the station. GM MICHAEL BROUDER sent this memo to the staff today. Jeff joined the station as its assistant ND in 2011 and was promoted to the top job in March 2019. His Linkedin page (already modified with a “Open to Work” banner) tells the rest of his background.

We’ll see if the rest of the week brings any other news before our next full edition on Sunday.

TEISHA PARKER joins News 12 New Jersey as its next news director. She’s currently the Assistant News Director for Tegna’s WTIC-TV (FOX) in Hartford. She’s worked for other stations in Hartford, Boston and Springfield, MA. Learn more in this memo from Altice Senior Vice President and General Manager JACQUES NATZ.

Teisha replaces JEREMY SETTLE who is leaving after nine years, the last three as news director.

Also, I need to correct an error from last weekend’s full report.

ANDY DELANCEY is headed to Scripps’ WCPO-TV (ABC) in Cincinnati as its next Assistant News Director. We mistakenly reported he was headed to another Scripps owned ABC affiliate in Ohio.

She’s been the Assistant ND there for two years, has also worked in Philadelphia, Miami, and for CNN in Atlanta. She replaces KATHY REYNOLDS who left to become ND for Scripps’ WPTV in West Palm Beach, FL.

WTSP-TV, Tampa/St. Petersburg, FL…NICOLE WOLFE returns to Tampa as Director of Content for this Tegna/CBS station. She’s been the ND for Scripps’ WSFL-TV in Ft. Lauderdale, hired there to start a news department before the pandemic derailed that. WSFL now airs newscasts produced by WPLG-TV. Nicole was the Assistant ND at Scripps’ WFTS-TV (ABC) in Tampa before Miami. She replaces KELLY FRANK who became GM for CBS’s KYW-TV in Philadelphia.

WCCB-TV, Charlotte, NC…this Bahakel owned CW affiliate has promoted JEFF MONHEIT to news director. More here. Jeff’s has worked here for 14 years, the last seven as Assistant News Director, and has worked in the market for 24 years. He replaces BROOKS BLANTON who was ND here for less than a year before returning to Grand Rapids, this time as ND for Tegna’s WZZM-TV (ABC).

Obituary:

Bode

KEN BODE, a former dean of the Medill School of Journalism and longtime political reporter who worked for PBS, NBC and CNN, died June 2. He was 83 and his cause of death has not yet been revealed. He also moderated Washington Week in Review for PBS and taught at DePauw University here in Indiana. More in these obituaries from The New York Times and The Washington Post.

Another week, another obituary for a longtime Reno broadcaster. BOB CARROLL died Monday, June 6th. He first began in Reno broadcasting in 1956 in radio, moved to KOLO-TV in 1960, and the jumped to KTVN-TV in 1967, where he started the news department and worked as anchor and news director. ADAM VERDUGO has been named executive producer for The CBS Evening News with Norah O’Donnell. He’s currently the story editor for the broadcast but has been teamed with O’Donnell for a more than decade in a variety of roles, including when both he and O’Donnell worked at NBC. More in this news release from CBS. He’s also oared at three different CBS News Bureaus around the country, and starts his new job tomorrow.

Corn

A sexual assault lawsuit against former ABC News executive MICHAEL CORN has been dismissed by a New York State Supreme Court Judge. Details in this story from The Los Angeles Times (registration may be required). Corn had served, at different times, as EP for both World News Tonight and Good Morning America before abruptly leaving ABC in 2021. He’s now President of News for Nexstar’s News Nation.

MARC STERNFIELD gets to be closer to family as he moves to Nexstar’s KTLA-TV (CW) in Los Angeles as the station’s Director of Digital Content. Here’s the memo from KLTA ND PETE SAIERS. We told you last week that Marc was leaving Scripps’ KSTU-TV (FOX) in Salt Lake City after seven years as ND and ten at the station. And we won’t bring up our erroneous speculation last week about his next job if you won’t.

A number of news management moves to report:

In an inter-Scripps move, ANDY DELANCEY heads north to WEWS-TV WCPO-TV (ABC) in Cincinnati as its next Assistant ND. He had been an EP at WPTV (NBC) in W. Palm Beach.

After a long search, HAYDEN ELLIOTT has been promoted to Executive Producer for Gray’s WNEM-TV (CBS) in Flint/Saginaw, MI. He’s been a producer there for almost five years.

And two management moves at Weigel’s WBND-TV (ABC) in South Bend, IN:

JASON RONIMOUS is the new Assistant ND here. He had been the Chief Photographer/Operations Manager for WRTV (Scripps/ABC) in Indianapolis.

And SEAN McGARRY gets his first management job as the Morning EP. Sean had been the morning producer.

Holliday

TWO news directors, one retired and one still current, have entered Halls of Fames in their respective states.

ART HOLLIDAY, who joined KSDK-TV (Tegna/NBC) in St. Louis as the weekend sports anchor in 1979, was inducted into the Missouri Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame. Art became ND last year. Here’s what the station aired.

And TED LINN, who spent 16 years as news director for WANE-TV (Nexstar/CBS) in Fort Wayne, IN, before retiring in 2020, will enter the Indiana Broadcast Pioneers Hall of Fame. CARIDAD (CARI) HERNANDEZ has been promoted to Director of Content for Tegna’s WUSA-TV (CBS) in Washington, She’s been the Assistant News Director there for the past two years and previously worked in Philadelphia, Miami, and at CNN in Atlanta. The WUSA news release fills in the rest. Cari replaces KATHY REYNOLDS who left the station last month to become ND for Scripps’ WPTV (NBC) in West Palm Beach.

Wolfe

Tegna’s second move sees NICOLE WOLFE return to Tampa as Director of Content for WTSP-TV (CBS). She’s been the news director for Scripps’ WSFL-TV where she oversaw Scripps statewide streaming network. (WSFL does not produce its own newscasts, having farmed that out to Berkshire Hathaway’s WPLG-TV (ABC). More on Nicole and her background here. She replaces KELLY FRANK who moved to Philadelphia as GM for CBS owned KYW-TV.

Sternfield

It would be easy to argue that my speculation skills are no better than my sports betting picks. In Sunday’s newsletter, we speculated that KSTU-TV (Salt Lake City/Scripps/FOX) ND MARC STERNFIELD might be headed across town to become ND for Nexstar’s KTVX-TV. Right company, wrong station. She’s currently the Managing Editor for Minnesota Public Radio’s MPR News, but earlier in her career was a staff photographer at The Philadelphia Inquirer. Sarah’s also a past two-term NABJ President.

KODE/KNSF-TV, Joplin, MO…BOBBIE POTTORFF returns to a news room for her first ND job. Earlier in her career she spent ten years as an Assignment Manager and Assistant ND at KOAM-TV in Joplin before leaving in 2001 for a variety of other jobs. She replaces LEISHA BEARD who’s now ND for sister Nexstar station WHTM-TV in Harrisburg, PA. Nexstar owns KSNF (NBC) affiliate, and KODE (ABC), under a JSA. KODE is owned by Mission Broadcasting

KTAB/KRBC-TV, Abilene, TX…MANNY DIAZ joins this Nexstar operation as news director. KSTU-TV, Salt Lake City, UT…MARC STERNFIELD is leaving this Scripps’ owned FOX affiliate for the proverbial new job ‘to be announced soon’ (perhaps as early as tomorrow). However, his GM’s note to the staff says Marc is leaving for ‘another non-Scripps market station’. Hmm. Nexstar’s KTVX-TV has an ND opening. Let the speculation begin! He joined KSTU in 2012 as the Assistant ND and became ND in 2015. He’s also worked in Boston, Denver, and Lexington.

Bauer

KTNV-TV, Las Vegas, NV…a house cleaning at this Scripps’ owned ABC affiliate as both ND NANCY BAUER and GM CHRIS WAY left. More from the Las Vegas Review-Journal. Nancy’s been HD here since 2019, coming from Scripps’ KERO-TV in Bakersfield. She spent 20 years as an ND for two stations in Los Angeles and nine months as an ND in San Diego. Way has been GM here for five years, returning to LV after 8 months as GM for Scripps’ KMTV in Omaha. Earlier in his career he worked in a digital role for KLAS-TV in Vegas among other jobs.

Nelson

WWNY-TV, Watertown, NY…after 20 years at this Gray TV owned CBS affiliate, JEFF NELSON is leaving for a PR job at a local manufacturing company. Jeff started here after graduating from Syracuse, and worked in a variety of roles including producing, reporting, anchoring, and Assistant ND. He was promoted to news director two years ago. Specific Job Duties:

Institutes training systems for new employees.

Critiques newscasts daily to correct errors, improve coverage and provide mentoring feedback to news staff.
Prepare the department’s budget and manages expenses to meet established financial goals.

Skills & Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism, or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and work-related experience preferred.
Minimum five years’ experience in news programming production, with at least two years’ experience in a leadership role.

Obituary:

JACK HOWE, a former news director in Reno and Las Vegas, died May 24. He was 93. He first served as ND for KORK-TV (now KSNV-TV) before moving to Reno as ND and also anchor for KOLO-TV. KOLO reporter ED PEARCE (a former ND at KTVN-TV in Reno) wrote this remembrance, and this obituary has more details on Jack’s life and career.

Marilu replaces CHAD MATHEWS (a former ND at WABC) who was promoted to President of the ABC owned stations earlier this year.

Gray has transferred CHRIS FEDELE from General Manager at Toledo’s WTVG-TV (ABC) in Toledo to General Manager for WPTA/WISE-TV (ABC/NBC/CW) in Ft. Wayne. Now you see them, now you don’t.

That’s the case for both the news director and general manager at Scripps’ KTNV (ABC) in Las Vegas. Both ND NANCY BAUER and GM CHRIS WAY were shown the door yesterday, according to this story in the Las Vegas Review-Journal. (registration may be required.

Bauer

Bauer’s been the ND there since 2019, coming from Bakersfield where she ran the news department at Scripps’ KERO-TV. Before that she spent 20 years as a news director in Los Angeles at KCBS/KCAL-TV and KNBC-TV. She’s also been an ND in San Diego and for a cable operation in Palmdale, CA.

Way joined KTNV in 2017 from Scripps’ KMTV in Omaha. Earlier in his career he worked at KLAS-TV (CBS) in Vegas as Director of Digital Media.

Abouzeid

Also, I made two mistakes in last week’s newsletter that need to be corrected.

First, JOE ABOUZEID will be the GM for Nexstar’s WIVB-TV in Buffalo. moving from sister Nexstar station WDTN-TV (NBC) in Dayton. I had the wrong call letters in our report. Thanks to several readers who caught the error.

Interestingly, no one pointed out that I misspelled SHAWN HODER’s name in reporting his move to news director for CBS o-and-o KDKA-TV in Pittsburgh from WTSP-TV (Tegna/CBS) in Tampa-St Petersburg, where he was Assistant ND. (At least I had his name right in the photo caption.) To make it up to you and Shawn, here’s a profile of him from The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Sad news from KYTX-TV (Tegna/CBS) in Tyler, TX, where Assistant News Director ALICIA PEKEMA LIPPMAN lost her battle with cancer last Tuesday. She was just 32 year old. Alicia worked at stations in Lake Charles, LA, Baton Rouge, and Little Rock. Among the survivors are her husband DAVID LIPPMAN, an anchor at KYTX. This obituary has more.

TOM MURPHY, a legendary leader in our industry, died Wednesday at his home at age 96. His first TV job was running a station in Albany, NY. He helped grow Capital Cities Communications which later merged with the much larger ABC company, which, of course, was then acquired by Disney. STEPHEN MARKS also was involved in running TV stations, but on a much smaller level. He died May 11 at the age of 72. Stephen owned a few small TV and radio stations. Two of this stations have interesting distinctions: according to this obituary, one (WBKB-TV) in Alpena, MI, is affiliated with all four major networks, while another (KXGN-TV) is the only station in the smallest market, Glendive, MT.

MARK DANIELSON proves you can go home again as he returns to Salt Lake City as general manager for KTVX-TV, Nexstar’s ABC affiliate. Mark worked there early in his career before moving around to (among others) two ND jobs in Idaho and two GM jobs for News-Press and Gazette stations. JOE ABOUZEID moves within Nexstar to take over the company’s Buffalo station, WIVB-TV (CBS). He’s spent the last ten years as general manager for Nexstar’s WDTN-TV (NBC) in Dayton. Joe moved to Dayton from Providence, where he had been news director for WPRI-TV from 2005-2012, and worked as Managing Editor and Assistant ND before that. He replaces BRIEN KENNEDY who is retiring.

The final Nexstar move finds JUDSON BECK staying in cold weather country as he moves from Nexstar’s operations in LaCrosse and Eau Claire, WI, to Green Bay, where he will oversee both WFRV-TV (CBS) in Green Bay and WJMN-TV (Independent) in Marquette, MI.

DAVE GERMAN leaves Scripps’ KMTV (CBS) after just eight months as general manager to return to Texas as GM for Scripps’ KXXV/KHRD-TV, ABC affiliates that serve the Waco, Temple, and Bryan, TX markets. This time it’s a new VP/News Director for the CBS owned station in Pittsburgh, KDKA-TV. SHAWN HODER returns to The Steel City, where he began his career as a photographer and producer at Cox owned WPXI-TV (NBC). More in this news release from CBS. He’s currently the Assistant ND at Tegna’s currently news director-less WTSP-TV (CBS) in Tampa-St. Petersburg.

Shawn’s also worked in Columbus, OH, Atlanta, Washington, DC, Seattle and Orlando.

He replaces KATHY HOSTETTER who was promoted to VP/GM for CBS’s Baltimore station, WJZ-TV last month, after 3 1/2 years as ND at KDKA.

Like my waistline, the number of open ND jobs inches slightly higher this week, with 35 stations on our list of openings.

That’s because there are FIVE new ND openings while another THREE jobs were filled. ONE of the new openings is in market #1, another is at a CBS o-and-o, while another CBS owned station filled its vacant ND job.

She replaces MIKE DELLO STRITTO who was also promoted, in his case to VP/News at KCBS/KCAL.

KXXV/KRHD-TV, Waco, TX…DAN DELGADO starts June 30th as the next ND for these Scripps owned ABC affiliates covering Waco, Bryan and Temple, TX. We told you last week that Dan was leaving Nexstar’s KCAU-TV in Sioux City, IA. It’s a return to Texas for Dan, who’s also been an ND in Laredo and anchored in San Antonio. He replaces SYVLIA VILLAREAL who left last December after six years.

KIMT-TV, Mason City, IA…DAN CLOUSE returns to this Allen Media owned CBS affiliate, this time as ND. Dan passed along this note which has more details and covers his background. He replaces JAIME COPLEY who left late last year after eleven years as ND and 23 at the station. According to her Linkedin page, she’s now working as an advertising manager for a manufacturing company.

She first joined ‘BZ in 1997 as a producer. She was promoted to Executive Producer in 2019, and news director in October, 2020.

WIVB-TV, Buffalo, NY…LISA POLIZZI has left this Nexstar/CBS affiliate at a most unusual time: in the middle of the coverage of the mass shooting at a local supermarket. This Buffalo News story explains the circumstances. Further complicating matters: the station’s GMs, BRIEN KENNEDY, is scheduled to retire this week. Lisa spent five years as ND and seven at the station, joining from her previous job as ND for WKBW-TV in Buffalo. She’s also worked for a third Buffalo station and in Baltimore.

WTSP-TV, the Tegna owned CBS affiliate in Tampa/St. Petersburg, has filled its open morning EP position. TAYLOR BERRY will join on June 6th. She was most recently a Senior Producer with the Black News Channel and has aso worked in Houston and New Orleans.

Speaking of Tegna, for those who missed the news in our UPDATE earlier this week, shareholders have approved the merger with Standard.
