Another day, another UPDATE as Scripps fills a senior management position from within the company.

McGarvy

SEAN McGARVY, who’s been the ND for Scripps’ WEWS-TV (ABC) in Cleveland for the past year and a half, has been tapped to fill the company’s vacant Senior Director of Content position. He’s also worked for Scripps as the Assistant ND at KMGH-TV (ABC) in Denver.

Sean’s also worked in Washington, Indianapolis, Des Moines, and Columbia, MO. Details on those jobs are on his Linkedin page.

His move creates an open ND job in Cleveland, of course.

Siegel

Sean replaces BILL SIEGEL who was promoted to GM for the company’s WSFL-TV (CW) in Ft. Lauderdale/Miami, and tasked with starting a news department there.

A former news director turned general manager heads east for her next job.

Barrett

JOAN BARRETT will be the next GM for WCNC-TV, the Tegna owned NBC affiliate in Charlotte. She told her staff at KDVR/KWGN-TV in Denver that she was leaving this morning. And here’s the news release from Tegna.

Joan’s been the GM in Denver for the past four years. She’d earlier spent 14 years at KWCH-TV in Wichita, the last 12 as GM after beginning as the news director for that CBS affiliate. She’s had a long and varied career, beginning on-air in Lubbock, TX.

Collura

As WCNC, she replaces another former ND turned GM, DEBORAH COLLURA, who left WCNC at the end of 2019.

We’re a little late this week, but I can’t blame the NBA All-Star game. I’m a partial NBA season ticket holder and even I can’t watch that game. 🙂

THREE new news directors this week and TWO new openings, dropping our list of open ND jobs to 32.

None of those openings are featured in paid help wanted ads, but we do have TWO ads for news management positions in top 35 markets.

We have an obituary for a long ago ND who spent a year as a hostage in the middle east.

There are a number of news managers on the move, including a promotion for one corporate VP/News. And we have THREE items in our GM section, including the pending retirement of a GM at an ABC o-and-o.

Tina C.

WFTV, Orlando, FL…our UPDATE Thursday morning first brought you the news that TINA COMMODORE will be the next news director at this Cox owned ABC station. It’s another move within Cox for Tina, who’s spent three plus years as ND for KOKI-TV in Tulsa and worked for the company’s WSB-TV in Atlanta for seven years. She’s also worked in Columbus, OH, and Cincinnati, as well as for CNN. In Orlando, she replaces MATT PARCELL who announced in December that he was retiring after 7 1/2 years as news director.

Godinez

KUVS-TV, Sacramento, CA…LUIS FELIPE GODINEZ started Monday, February 10th, as news director for this Univision station. Media Moves has more here. He’s been the Assistant ND for KDTV in San Francisco and earlier worked at stations in Nevada, Colorado, and Texas. The last ND I show here was PABLO IACUB but he left in September 2017. If there was someone in between, I missed it.

Webb

WBTW-TV, Myrtle Beach, SC…it’s a return to this CBS affiliate for RYAN WEBB who will become news director on March 9th. He was an EP here for three years before a two year move to sister Nexstar station WKRN-TV in Nashville where he worked as a producer, senior producer and late news EP. He’s also worked in Knoxville. Ryan replaces ERIC WALTERS who left to become ND at Gray’s WDBJ-TV in Roanoke after three years as ND and 25 at the station.

New News Director Openings:

KOKI-TV, Tulsa, OK…we told you above that TINA COMMODORE was leaving this Cox owned FOX affiliate to become ND for sister COX station WFTV in Orlando.

KSBW-TV, Salinas/Monterey, CA…LAWTON DODD has left this Hearst owned NBC affiliate after 22 years as ND. Here’s part of an email he sent me:

I’ve just finished up my course work/graduated this month from the Executive Leaders Program at the Center for Defense & Homeland Security on the United States Naval Postgraduate School campus. Now it’s time to take some time off.

Lawton’s also worked in Norfolk, Wichita, and Columbia, MO.

Obituary:

Levin

JERRY LEVIN died February 7th. While he was a former ND at WBRC-TV in Birmingham, he was better known as a former hostage of the Hezbollah militants. He was working as the Middle East Bureau Chief for CNN when he was captured in 1984 and spent almost a year in custody. This story details his background and his daring escape from captivity.

ANDREA BERRY returns to NBC’s WCAU-TV in Philadelphia as executive producer. She’s spent the last three years as the weekend EP for WABC-TV in New York. In addition to her earlier stint as a producer at WCAU, she’s worked for two stations in Washington, DC.

CAROLINE FOY WELCH is retiring as GM for ABC’s owned and operated WTVD-TV in Raleigh/Durham after eight years there. Broadcasting and Cable has more in this story. Before moving to WTVD, she spent about 20 years at another ABC o-and-o, WPVI-TV in Philadelphia where she left as VP/Programming. Caroline started at WPVI as a promotion producer.

Meyers

ALLYSON MEYERS will be the next Vice President and General Manager for Sinclair’s KTUL-TV (ABC) in Tulsa. Details in this news release. She’s a former GM for Fox’s WOFL-TV in Orlando. In Tulsa, she replaces PAT BALDWIN who left the station at the end of 2019 after 22 years as general manager there.

DANNY WALKER has been promoted to General Manager for Heartland Media’s WTVA-TV in Tupelo, MS. He’s been the Director of Sales there. A veteran Cox Media newswoman advances within the company to a news director job in a top 20 market.

Tina C.

TINA COMMODORE, who’s been the ND for Cox’s KOKI-TV (FOX) in Tulsa, heads to Orlando where she’ll take over the newsroom for WFTV (ABC). She joined KOKI as ND in November 2016, and was assumed oversight of the Cox radio stations there in February 2018.

Before Tulsa, Tina worked for seven years at Cox’s flagship WSB-TV in Atlanta as Managing Editor and earlier as Manager of Coverage and Content. She’s also worked in Columbus, OH, and Cincinnati, as well as for CNN.

In Orlando, she replaces MATT PARCELL who announced in December that he was retiring after 7 1/2 years as news director.

KCPQ-TV, Seattle, WA…ERIK BREON will be the next ND for this FOX affiliate. It’s a return to Seattle for Erik, who earlier worked for 12 years at KING-TV. Here’s the note he posted on social media, and here’s his complete career background, including his current job as ND for KOLD-TV in Tucson. At KCPQ, he replaces ERICA HILL-RODRIGUEZ who left last summer to move to Los Angeles to be with her wife and landed as ND for KTTV (FOX). While KCPQ is now owned by Nexstar, it’s in the process of being sold to FOX.

KARD/KTVE-TV, West Monroe, LA…congratulations to MICHAEL THOMPSON who’s the new ND for this Nexstar operation. Michael has been the Executive Producer for KLTV/KTRE-TV in Tyler, TX. He’s a former ND for KWES-TV in Midland, TX, and earlier worked at KLTV/KTRE. In West Monroe, he replaces ANDY PEDERSON who left for a new job which will be announced soon. WITN-TV, Greenville, NC…this Gray TV owned is advertising for a new news director. MELISSA ABRAHAMSEN CASHWELL has been the ND here since October, 2017, when she replaced the late STEPHANIE SHOOP. Melissa first joined WITN in 2005 as a producer. I reached out to Melissa (who is apparently still at the station) Sunday afternoon and will report back to you if/when I hear from her.

Obituary:

ANN OGLE, who was married to one-time Oklahoma City News Director and Anchor JACK OGLE and mother to several offspring who’ve anchored in OKC, died Thursday, February 6th at the age of 85. She was remembered in this obituary on the KFOR-TV website.

I don’t need to tell you ours is a very small business. We have a very personal and heartfelt note this week from someone many of you probably know, former news director and general manager LES VANN. His note was prompted by last week’s obituary for MARTY LONG, wife of former GM JOHN LONG. Les may have some challenges ahead, but he still knows how to write. I hope you’ll take a moment to read this note written by Les intended for you.

The Black News Channel is scheduled to launch this week. The Baltimore Sun talked with BNC VP/News GARY WORDLAW (a former Baltimore ND) about this new venture.

WCPO-TV (ABC/Scripps) in Cincinnati made a major change in its policies on when to use police mug shots. And few, if any, noticed. The station’s Senior Director of Local News Content (old timers would call him the news director) MIKE CANAN discussed the reasons behind the policy change and the reaction to it.

Two appointments at Scripps’ stations to Assistant ND. At KMGH-TV in Denver  KGTV in San Diego,  SARAH COWAN has been promoted from her role as EP for that ABC station. And at KSHB-TV (NBC/Kansas City), TRAVIS SATTIEWHITE has been named AND. He’s been working as an EP at WMC-TV in Memphis and earlier worked at CNN, in Miami and for several stations in Houston.

JULIE MARTORANO joins Scripps’s KSTU-TV in Salt Lake City as the Morning Executive Producer for that FOX affiliate. She moves east from KABC-TV in Los Angeles where she was a producer. Julie’s also worked in Las Vegas and Bakersfield.

Consulting firm SmithGeiger has added a new consultant, MICHELLE TOY. Michelle’s been working at KTVU-TV (FOX) in Oakland/San Francisco where she is the Managing Editor of Digital and Content. ANDREW WYATT adds oversight of Washington’s WDCW-TV to his current role as GM of Hagerstown, MD’s WDVM-TV.

Greetings:

It’s a return to Seattle for a veteran newsman who gets his THIRD news director job in a market where he earlier worked for 12 years.

Breon

ERIK BREON will be the next news director for KCPQ-TV, the FOX affiliate in Seattle. Q13, as it is branded, is currently owned by Nexstar but is in the process for being sold to Fox. Erik posted this on Facebook announcing the news.

He’s been the ND for KOLD-TV (Gray/CBS) in Tucson since April 2017. For the rest of his career moves (and where he spent the 12+ years in Seattle) check out his Linkedin page.

At KCPQ, he will replace ERICA-HILL RODRIGUEZ who left last summer after six years and is now the ND for Fox’s KTTV in Los Angeles.

WTTW-TV, Chicago, IL…our update earlier this week brought the news of HUGO BALTA‘s appointment of news director for the public television station, The news release has all the details. Hugo, a two time president of NAHJ, filled a newly created title here and essentially replaces MARY FIELD whose title was executive producer. She retired last year after 23 years. Hugo most recently worked at MSNBC as a senior producer. He’s also been an ND for WNJU-TV (Telemundo) in New York, worked at WCBS-TV, and spent seven years at ESPN.

WVEC-TV, Norfolk, VA…CHRIS GEGG fills the vacant ND job here. He’s leaving Sinclair’s WRGB-TV in Albany where he’s spent the last three years as ND. Chris has also been an ND in Milwaukee and Madison, WI, and has worked in Detroit, Nashville, Tampa, Toledo and Midland, TX. At WVEC, he replaces the man who is now his boss, DOUG WIEDER who was promoted to GM for this Tegna owned ABC station last fall after seven years as ND.

New News Director Openings:

WNJU-TV, New York, NY…ENDY RODRIQUEZ has left his job as Vice President/News for this Telemundo station after almost 20 years at the station, where he began as an intern in 2001. He was promoted to news director in 2017 from his old job as Assistant News Director. Media Moves has more in this story.

McConico

WPMT-TV, Harrisburg, PA…this Tegna owned FOX affiliate is looking for a new news director following the departure of MATT McCONICO who left on January 24th after 4+ years as news director. Matt’s also been an ND for KRNV-TV in Reno, and has worked in Ft. Myers (for two different stations), Green Bay, and Eau Claire, WI.

WRGB-TV, Albany, NY…as detailed above, CHRIS GEGG is leaving after three years to become the ND for WVEC-TV in Norfolk. This is a CBS affiliate owned by Sinclair.

Updating our story last wreck about BEN STANFIELD‘s departure from WDHN-TV in Dothan, AL, after two years as ND (he also anchored there). Ben wrote to share that he’s headed to WTVM-TV in Columbus, GA, as the morning anchor there.

We are late in telling you about the passing of MARTY LONG, wife of longtime General Manager JOHN LONG. She lost her 26 year battle with Parkinson’s last August at the age of 72. Details about her life and family in this obituary. There was no public memorial or announcement of her passing, but John did agree to my sharing it with you. John was a GM at stations in Washington, DC, Indianapolis, and Cincinnati. Marty is also survived by four sons, one of whom, CHRIS LONG is a sportscaster for KSTP-TV in Minneapolis. Friends can wish John well via an email here.

And we now know memorial plans for longtime University of Missouri professor ROD GELATT, whose passing we shared with you last week. The memorial will take place on Saturday, Feb. 22, at 10:00 AM St. Thomas More Newman Center in Columbia. A lunch, at the church, will follow the Mass at about 11:30. There will be visitation on Friday at the church from 6:00 to 8:00. Any memorials can go to Rod’s KBIA Faculty Enhancement Fund, Missouri School of Journalism, 103 Neff Hall, Columbia MO, 65211. Rod was 93 when he died of a rare form of blood cancer. During his 45 years at Missouri, he served as ND for both KOMU-TV and KBIA-FM.

Two management hires at Scripps’s KMGH-TV in Denver: KIRSTEN BOYD has been promoted to Assistant ND from her old job as executive producer for this ABC affiliate. And DAVID KLUGH has been upped to the newly created position of Managing Editor there. He’s been the Investigative Manager there for the last year.

JANELLE HAWTHORNE is now the Managing Editor at Scripps’ WEWS-TV in Cleveland. She had been working at WJW-TV in Cleveland.

Longtime Magid consultant NICK LAWLER is retiring after 33 years at the consulting firm and close to fifty years in the business. That includes news director jobs in Minneapolis, Oklahoma City, and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. His farewell note (posted on Linkedin) tells more and suggests there may be more to come. There are two fewer places to read about TV industry news with these announcements this week.

Editorial director and publisher CHUCK ROSS announced that he was closing the TVWeek.com website. It’s a descendent of Electronic Media which morphed into Television Week in 2003, and became an online only publication in 2009. Chuck is offering to sell the name, etc. for one dollar to any journalism school which would continue publishing it. Details here in his farewell column.

And news about television happenings in Orlando will be harder to find. That’s because HAL BOEDEKER has accepted a voluntary buyout from the Orlando Sentinel. He’s covered the beat for 25 years and earlier spent five years as the TV critic for the Miami Herald. He outlined the highs and lows (mostly highs) in his last column.

Univision Arizona has named JOE DONNARUMMA as General Manager of its properties there. He’ll be based in Phoenix.

Gray Television has named a new GM for its New Orleans station, WVUE-TV. RONNA CORRENTE will succeed TIM INGRAM as the head of that FOX affiliate. She’s leaving the same job at WAFB-TV in Baton Rouge, where she’ll be replaced by JOE SCIORTINO who moves there from GM at KSLA-TV in Shreveport. Details here.

HUGO BALTA was named ND today for WTTW-TV in Chicago. You may not recognize the call letters: it’s a public TV station there. And it’s a newly created title…Hugo replaces MARY FIELD who retired last summer after 23 years. Her title was executive producer.

WREX is owned by Quincy Media and is an NBC affiliate.

WDHN-TV, Dothan, AL…this Nexstar owned ABC affiliate is advertising for a news director. My records show BEN STANFIELD, an anchor there, was promoted to ND in January, 2018. He is still on the station’s website, so perhaps he is going to give up the ND part of his portfolio. He’s off to WTVM-TV in Columbus, GA, to anchor the morning news.  Ben’s been an anchor at the station for about five years and earlier worked for another Dothan station.

Obituaries:

Cole

TERRY COLE, a former news director and general manager, died January 17 at the age of 63 in Rapid City, SD. A private funeral was held last Friday. He served as ND for at least three stations and GM for at least three others. This obituary outlines his career. His tenure as ND at WTSP-TV in Tampa ended when he and a colleague were accused of tapping into a competitor’s computer. Terry pled no contest and was sentenced to five years probation.

Gelatt

During a 45 year career on the faculty at the University of Missouri School of Journalism, ROD GELATT trained hundreds of future journalists, me among them. He did so with kindness, humor, and a strong sense of what it meant to be a journalist. Rod died last Sunday at the age of 93. During his tenure at Missouri, Rod served, at different times, as ND of both KOMU-TV and KBIA-FM. More on his life and legacy here. There will be a memorial service at a later date in Columbia.

SHELDON COOPER, a former GM of WGN-TV in Chicago and longtime Tribune executive, also died Sunday, also at the age of 93. Sheldon spent eight years as GM for WGN before becoming President of Tribune Productions (later Tribune Entertainment). ROBERT FEDER looks back at his career.

Veteran Cox Media news executive MIKE DREADEN is retiring after 45 years in our business. Mike kindly sent me this email which explains his retirement decision, his career background. He also pointed out that his retirement dinner was scheduled to coincide with a Cox news director and promotion manager meeting so they could participate as well.

LENA SADIWSKYJ joins WACH-TV in Columbia, SC, as its next Assistant News Director. She most recently had been the news director for WTVY-TV in Dothan, AL. In addition to Dothan, she’s been an ND in Knoxville, Orlando, Tucson, Shreveport, has worked in Dallas, Phoenix, Birmingham, as well as Toronto and Halifax in her native Canada. Lena also taught at the University of Missouri School of Journalism.

Finally, I spoke today with longtime Los Angeles area newsman LARRY LAURENT who asked for a favor, which I’m happy to provide. Larry was diagnosed with glioblastoma last May, a form of brain cancer. Recent complications have complicated his recovery and have left him unable to type, but we had a good telephone conversation. The favor? Larry’s worried that his friends might think he had ‘ghosted’ them. But his wife checks (and replies) to this email.
