January 13, 2019
Monday, January 14, 2019 UPDATE:
Greetings:
Two items of note today.

Carson
First, a news director opening at a top 15 station, with news that CHERYL CARSON has left Tegna’s KING-TV (NBC) in Seattle after three years as ND. General Manager JIM ROSE sent this note to the staff late Friday afternoon.
She first joined the station in 2012 as Assistant ND and was promoted to ND in February, 2016. Cheryl worked eleven years in Los Angeles and was also an ND in Greensboro-High Point. Her Linkedin page has her entire career background.
And…we can tell you that DENISE VICKERS has left WHNT-TV in Huntsville, where she was Station Manager and News Director. She’s taken a GM job somewhere that will be announced later today.
She’s worked for that Tribune owned (for now) CBS affiliate since 2006 and earlier had been an ND in Montgomery, AL. Her now-outdated station profile (check it out before it goes away!) has the rest of her career history.
Finally, our apologies to new KVVU-TV (Las Vegas/Meredith/Fox) General Manager MICHAEL KORR whose named we misspelled in reporting his promotion in our newsletter yesterday.
A busy start to the week…we’ll have updates as warranted and a full report this weekend.
regards,
Rick Gevers

Greetings:
We have a lot in this week’s report:
FOUR newly named news directors. ONE new opening.
Our never official list of ND openings drops to 26. ONE of those openings is featured in a paid help wanted ad below.
LOTS of movement on the GM front…that’s all below. And there’s lots of items in Names in the News, including a Q & A with a longtime Idaho newsman turned novelist, and a former ND files for his third term as mayor of his city…and may not have any opposition.
We also have TWO new obituaries plus more information about the passing of a former ND whose passing we first reported last week.
Please note the new ad below from Devlin Design Group. 2019 marks the 10th anniversary of our partnership and their support of this newsletter. Please join me in thanking them for that support.
Newly Named News Directors:
KMTV, Omaha, NE…I’m told that a news director has been hired here but the announcement won’t come for a few days, so we’re removing the opening from our list. We’ll fill you in when we can. The new ND will replace JOE SPADEA who left in November and is now the ND for WVLA/WGMB-TV in Baton Rouge.

Csanyi-Salcedo
KYTX-TV, Tyler, TX…ZOLTAN CSANYI-SALCEDO starts tomorrow as ND for this Tegna owned CBS affiliate. He replaces VICKI BRADLEY who left in August after about 16 months as ND. Zoltan spent the last three years as ND for Sinclair’s KGBT-TV in Harlingen, He’s also been an ND for Telemundo in Dallas, and three times in El Paso, (twice at the Univsiion station and once at the NBC affiliate). He’s also worked for ESPN.

Redding
WLBZ/WCSH-TV, Bangor/Portland, ME…MIKE REDDING returns as ND for these Tegna owned NBC affiliates. GM BRIAN CLIFFE told the staff. Mike was ND there from 2013-2016 before transferring to Tegna’s KVUE-TV in Austin, TX and later to WUSA-TV, Tegna’s Washington station. A family health matter is behind the move back to Maine. He’ll replace KAREN ARAIZA who left in November after two years as ND.

Anderson
KDLT-TV, Sioux Falls, SD…ANNDREA (cq) ANDERSON has been promoted to ND for this Red River Broadcasting owned NBC affiliate. She’s currently the weekend anchor/producer there and joined KDLT in 2015 as a reporter. She replaces JESSICA BROVOLD who resigned last summer to take a job out of television after about a year as ND.
New News Director Opening:
KGBT-TV, Harlingen, TX…as noted above, ZOLTAN CSANYI-SALCEDO has left this Sinclair owned CBS affiliate to become ND for Tegna’s KYTX-TV in Tyler, TX. He was ND here almost three years.
Also, despite what you might have read on another website, WICS-TV in Springfield, IL, is NOT looking for a new news director. MICHAEL TRUETT remains the ND at this Sinclair station which IS looking for a newscast director.

Obituaries:

Anderson
GARY ANDERSON, a former news director and general manager who also worked for CNN in affiliate sales, died last month of heart failure. He was 78. Gary was an ND for stations in Texas and South Carolina, and a GM in several others. His close friend and former colleague, SCOTT PARKS, wrote and sent me this obituary. No funeral services will be held.

Walsh
CAROL WALSH, mother of JERRY WALSH, Nexstar’s VP of Local Content Development, died last Tuesday at the age of 70 after a brief illness. Funeral services will be held tomorrow (Monday, January 14). Mrs. Walsh worked as a school teacher, opened and ran a nursery school, helped her late husband (also named Jerry) with the family video business, and began a golf tournament to benefit ALS after his death. A kind note reaches Jerry at: jwalsh@nexstar.tv

Cepnick
We have a little more information on the death of former Denver and North Carolina news director GARY CURTIS (real name: GARY CEPNICK). We found this obituary in the Greensboro News & Record. It tells us that Gary was 72, died after a year long battle with cancer, and fills in many details about his life and survivors.
Names in the News (and other items):
Media Moves does a good job of covering news in Spanish language media. There are three stories of note today:

Balta
HUGO BALTA returns to MSNBC. He was a producer there at the turn of the century (for some reason that sounds odd, but true). Now…he’ll be a senior producer working on weekend programming. Hugo was an ND for Telemundo in New York, worked at WCBS-TV, and spent the last seven years at ESPN. He’s in his second term as president of NAHJ.
Three news managers have left EstrellaTV. Its parent company is operating under the protection of a bankruptcy court.
JUAN CARLOS PINZÓN crosses the street in Dallas. He’s joining Univision as an executive producer from his role as a senior writer/producer for Telemundo.

Dean
RYAN DEAN moves from reporter to managing editor at KSDK-TV, Tegna’s NBC affiliate in St. Louis. He’s been a reporter there for 10 years and earlier worked in Syracuse. Ryan’s married to DANA DEAN who reports for a mid-morning program called Show Me St. Louis.
KRISTEN BOLDEN joins KIVI-TV in Boise as an executive producer. She’s been producing for WIAT-TV in Birmingham and has also worked as a producer in Peoria.
Former Evansville news director LLOYD WINNECKE filed for re-election as he goes for his third term as Mayor of Evansville. This article suggests he’s so popular he may not have any opposition.
Longtime KIVI-TV (Boise, ID) Assignment Manager STEVE BERTEL has published his first novel.
General Manager News and Notes:
Lots of news on the GM front this week:
First, Meredith filled two open GM spots at stations in Nashville and Las Vegas:

LaSpina
RENE LaSPINA joins WSMV-TV (NBC) in Nashville as General Manager, replacing DALE WOODS who left the station after not quite 18 months. Rene’s a former GM in Buffalo, Minneapolis, Memphis, Albany, NY; and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.
And MICHAEL KORS KORR (corrected 1/14/19) was promoted from Sales Manager to General Manager of the company’s Las Vegas FOX affiliate, KVVU-TV.

Kelley
DICK KELLEY, who’s been GM of NBC’s KNSD-TV in San Diego for more than eight years, is retiring. He will leave the station at the end of March. Dick earlier spent 2+ years as VP/Sales for KNTV, the NBC owned station in San Francisco.
JOSH YOUNG joins Gray Television as GM of the company’s stations in Waco and Bryan, TX, KWTX-TV and KBTX-TV. He had been the GM of the (now former) Raycom stations in Midland-Odessa, TX, KWES-TV and KTXC-TV.
MARVIN RHODES moves within Minnesota to become GM of Quincy’s KTTC-TV in Rochester, MN. For the last five years, he’s been GM at KEYC-TV in Mankato, MN, and has also worked for two stations in Oregon.

Marks
At KEYC, the station has named longtime broadcaster JEFF MARKS as the interim general manager. Many of you know Jeff, a former GM in Roanoke, Augusta, GA, and Bangor, as well as GM/ND for News 12 New Jersey. He’s also a past chair of RTDNA.
