Jacob

Jacob

MITCH JACOB, the news director for Sinclair’s WJLA-TV (ABC) in Washington, told the staff within the hour that he’s resigning. This email explains the reasons behind his departure. His last day will be this Friday, November 16th.

He’s been ND there since October, 2014, and added station manager to his title last November. Mitch earlier served as the ND for Sinclair’s WSYX/WTTE-TV in Columbus, Oh, and also was an ND in Toledo and Phoenix.

More on this…and all the week’s news…in our full newsletter this weekend.

Greetings:

For the middle of a rating period, there’s a lot going on.

We have FOUR newly opened news director jobs, TWO in Jackson, MS. And there are THREE newly hired NDs.

That means, by our figures, the number open news director jobs increases to 31.

THREE of those open ND jobs are among FOUR Paid Help Wanted Ads.

There’s ONE obituary for the “Walter Cronkite of Austin, MN”, some managers on the move (particularly in Phoenix), a former Dallas news manager has written a book for beginning producers, and a fun article on the evolution of technology used for election night coverage.

That’s all below.

JOHN O’ROURKE, called by some the WALTER CRONKITE of Austin, MN, died October 18th at the age of 84. He’s a former news director of what is now KAAL-TV in Austin. One difference between John and Walter: Walter was never mayor of his city, as John was…for ten years. That and more here.

Names in the News (and other items):

Two new news managers at Scripps’ KNXV-TV in Phoenix. VIC FIORELLO is the new morning EP. He re-joins his former boss at KPNX-TV, MARK CASEY, who is now the ND for KNXV. Vic most recently was a Faculty Associate at the Cronkite School at ASU. He’s worked for another Phoenix station and in Toledo.

Also at KNXV: LUKE GARRISON was promoted to PM EP. He’d been a producer there.

2018 has likely not been newsman turned journalism educator STEVE KALB’s favorite year. After a successful battle against cancer, he found himself if the hospital with heart issues. I’ll let him tell you about it here.

Former Dallas news manager MARK SHEPERD has spent his time since leaving KDAF-TV in Dallas working on a book for beginning producers. Mark tells me that project is now finished…you can check it out on Amazon by clicking here.

Almost everyone who has worked in a newsroom has worked an election night. If you’re among that group, you might enjoy this look at the change in technology over election night coverage over the years.

General Manager News and Notes:

DIANE KNIOWSKI joins Univision as President and Regional GM of Local Media. She’s been a SVP and Regional for Nexstar and served for many years as GM of WOOD-TV in Grand Rapids, MI. The move reunites her with VINCE SADUSKY. He ran LIN Televison when it owned WOOD-TV.

Chastain

Someone many of you (at least those who’ve worked at NBC affiliates in the last 20 years) might know is the new GM for WLNS-TV in Lansing, MI. SCOT CHASTAIN will run that CBS Affiliate. He spent more than 20 years at NBC, mostly in affiliate relations jobs, and has also worked at stations in New Orleans, Winston-Salem, and Bryan, TX.

And a personal note if you will…thanks to those who sent a kind note after I reported the death of my mom, EDITH GEVERS, last week. I read all of them and appreciated the time and kindness.

Stone

Stone

We’re talking about JOHN STONE who’s been named VP/News for KXAS-TV, the NBC owned station in Ft. Worth/Dallas, TX. Here’s the official announcement.

John joined the station last year as Assistant News Director. He spent the previous 13 years at WABC-TV in New York in a variety of roles, including Assistant ND. He’s also worked for two stations in Boston and for MSNBC.

He replaces the man who hired him, MARK GINTHER, who left the station last August after three years as ND.

We’ll have more in our full report this weekend.

Greetings:

Slow one week, busy the next. Last week was busy, so you know what that means.

To the best of my knowledge, there weren’t ANY news director changes this week.

The number of open news director jobs stands at 29. If you see something on the list that is wrong, please let me know.

There are THREE new help wanted ads…all for Assistant News Director jobs in three very different newsrooms.

We have a small number of news manager changes, and ONE GM change…that in a top ten market at an network o-and-o.

This week’s only obituary, however, hits very close to home.

My mom, EDITH GEVERS, died yesterday in St. Louis at the age of 94. Full details are below.

Obituaries:

Edith Gevers

Edith                          Gevers

As mentioned above, my mom, EDITH GEVERS, died Saturday at a St. Louis nursing home. A Leap Year baby, she was born on February 29th, 1924, and had been in pretty good shape until the last few days. Despite declining health and a battle with Alzheimer’s, she maintained a remarkable sense of humor. Last week, after my brother-in-law told her they’d made a haircut appointment for her, she asked “Are you insinuating I need one?”

She’s also survived by my sister, KATHY MAYES, and our spouses, KAREN BURNS and STEVE MAYES. Services will be next Saturday (11/3) in St. Louis. More on my mom’s life in this obituary.

  • JOHN TUMMINO, who was an evening producer at WKBW-TV in Buffalo, was promoted to executive producer there.

October 21, 2018

Greetings:

Remember how slow our reports have been the last few weeks.

Not this week!

Not with FOUR new news directors (all in top 35 markets), and THREE new ND openings, TWO in top 30 markets. One of those ND openings is at a top ten network o-and-o, and the opening was created because the incumber is off to be a GM.

Our list of open ND positions eases down slightly to 29.

ONE of those openings is featured in this week’s only Paid Help Wanted ad.

TWO obituaries this week, one of a veteran news director and one of a founder of NABJ.

And we have many items in Names in the News, including a lengthy New Yorker Magazine look at Sinclair Broadcasting.

Read on for more!

CANDACE McHAN returns to her native Georgia as Assistant News Director for Raycom-soon-to-be-Gray’s WALB-TV. She grew up watching WALB. Candace has been the Morning EP for WFTX-TV in Ft. Myers, and has also worked in Oklahoma City, Macon, GA, and for two stations in Tallahassee. More in this memo to the WALB staff.

GEORGE DUNSTER, a longtime news director in Lima, OH, is moving to Ohio to live with a daughter. He’s 86 now, and after 25 years at WLIO-TV, spent years working in local theatre. He’s enough of an icon in Lima to warrant this profile. Of note: George’s son SEAN followed him into TV, and served as ND for several stations, including WHIO-TV in Dayton before leaving the business last year.

And apologies to GERRY LANOSGA whose name I misspelled last week in reporting his renewed partnership with former colleague KATHLEEN JOHNSTON at Indiana University.

General Manager News and Notes:

We told you above that MIKE McCLAIN will be the next GM for FOX’s WJZY/WMYT-TV in Charlotte. He’s currently the ND for FOX’s WAGA-TV in Atlanta.
