December 2, 2018

Greetings:

We start this week with breaking news…The Chicago Tribune is one of several outlets reporting tonight that Nexstar will buy Tribune for 4.1 billion dollars. I’m sure you’ll see many stories in the days ahead explaining the challenges that stand in the way of that deal.

Turning to our normal subject, TWO new news directors this week and TWO newly opened positions. And one of those changes comes as a veteran ND gets her first GM job.

Our list of stations with news director openings increases at 34. ONE of those opportunities is featured in one of our TWO paid help wanted ads.

There’s lot to share in our Names in the News…and other stuff…section below. A longtime media critic laments what he sees as the decline of network television. A former ND turned network executive gets a promotion, and we have THREE stories about new management jobs for news people. And we have TWO stories about a former ND…and someone who’s just weeks away from being a former ND.

We have THREE obituaries again. ONE of a former (two-time) Ohio news director, and TWO of veteran station managers who had a lot of large market experience.

All that’s below.

She first joined the company in 2006 as ND for WISN-TV in Milwaukee. Lori’s also worked in Sacramento and San Francisco. In Albuquerque, she replaces another former ND, MARY LYNN ROPER, who is retiring after 25 years as GM and 41 years at the station, where she began as a reporter/photographer.

Venegas

Venegas

KTSM-TV, El Paso, TX…VICTOR VENEGAS has been promoted to news director for this Nexstar owned NBC affiliate. He’s been the Nightside EP there. His GM, DAVID CANDELARIA had this to say:

Victor is a true team player, mentor and leader in the News Room. He’s the guy that mentored our new reporters and mmjs and stepped up and made things happen for us during our transition to our new building. I can’t thank him enough.

Victor replaces ELIZABETH O’HARA who left last month after two years as ND.

He’s also worked in Chattanooga.

Funeral services for FRED WALKER will be held this Friday, December 7, in New Haven, CT.  More details here, including a detailed biography.

Walker

Walker

I’m reliably told that FRED WALKER has died, but I have no details about his passing. He was a longtime GM in major markets and also was involved in the ownership of a company called Broad Street which owned TV stations and cable companies. This bio tells you a lot more about him, and I’ll update my website when I learn more.  (See above.)

Names in the News (and other items):

The longtime media reporter for The Baltimore Sun, DAVID ZURAWIK, offers these thoughts on what he sees as the sad and greedy decline of network television.

JESSIE GARCIA is being promoted to a position called broadcast director at Scripps’ WTMJ-TV in Milwaukee (DIANE IRVING held that position before leaving in October, and she had earlier held the title of Assistant ND for this NBC affiliate.) MEAGAN HARRIS is leaving Tegna’s Jacksonville, FL, duopoly, WTLV/WJXX-TV, for a new job which she described on her Facebook page:

….an incredible opportunity with NBC Universal. I’ll be overseeing the editorial content on a new product that NBC will be launching in the coming months. It’s all about innovation and creative storytelling.

She’s been in Jacksonville for four years and worked for WFAA-TV in Dallas for eight years before that.

Finally, sorry to report that funeral services were held today for TONY BALLEW. Tony died last week at the age of 70. During a 40 year TV career, he was an ND in Cleveland (twice), Norfolk, Buffalo, and Palm Desert. He was also very open about his struggles with alcoholism, as you’ll see in this 2011 column. Tony later worked as a counselor in the field.

More later…

Greetings:

Let’s start by offering wishes for a safe holiday for you and yours…be careful if you’re traveling over the Thanksgiving weekend.

We’ve got just ONE newly hired news director in this week’s report, with TWO new openings, one in a top ten market.

So our count of open news director jobs increases slightly to 32.

TWO of those open ND jobs are featured in Paid Help Wanted Ads.

Lots of news managers on the move this week, and in some large markets…Phoenix, Orlando, and Indianapolis among others. And we’ll report on the retirement of a longtime GM who’s run stations in Chicago, Minneapolis, and other markets.

All that’s below!

KRNV/KRXI-TV, Reno, NV…as noted above, SCOTT FITZGERALD is leaving ‘the Biggest Little City in the World’ to go to Tulsa as ND for Scripps’ KJRH-TV. This is an NBC/FOX duopoly owned by Cunningham Broadcasting but operated by Sinclair. He’s been ND here just over two years.

One update from last week: We were a little thin on details about YVE JONES’s departure from WAPT-TV in Jackson, MS. She is leaving this Hearst owned ABC, but not until December.

He’s been ND there since October, 2014, and added station manager to his title last November. Mitch earlier served as the ND for Sinclair’s WSYX/WTTE-TV in Columbus, Oh, and also was an ND in Toledo and Phoenix.

More on this…and all the week’s news…in our full newsletter this weekend.

Greetings:

For the middle of a rating period, there’s a lot going on.

We have FOUR newly opened news director jobs, TWO in Jackson, MS. And there are THREE newly hired NDs.

That means, by our figures, the number open news director jobs increases to 31.

THREE of those open ND jobs are among FOUR Paid Help Wanted Ads.

There’s ONE obituary for the “Walter Cronkite of Austin, MN”, some managers on the move (particularly in Phoenix), a former Dallas news manager has written a book for beginning producers, and a fun article on the evolution of technology used for election night coverage.

That’s all below.

JOHN O’ROURKE, called by some the WALTER CRONKITE of Austin, MN, died October 18th at the age of 84. He’s a former news director of what is now KAAL-TV in Austin. One difference between John and Walter: Walter was never mayor of his city, as John was…for ten years. That and more here.

Names in the News (and other items):

Two new news managers at Scripps’ KNXV-TV in Phoenix. VIC FIORELLO is the new morning EP. He re-joins his former boss at KPNX-TV, MARK CASEY, who is now the ND for KNXV. Vic most recently was a Faculty Associate at the Cronkite School at ASU. He’s worked for another Phoenix station and in Toledo.

Also at KNXV: LUKE GARRISON was promoted to PM EP. He’d been a producer there.

2018 has likely not been newsman turned journalism educator STEVE KALB’s favorite year. After a successful battle against cancer, he found himself if the hospital with heart issues. I’ll let him tell you about it here.

Former Dallas news manager MARK SHEPERD has spent his time since leaving KDAF-TV in Dallas working on a book for beginning producers. Mark tells me that project is now finished…you can check it out on Amazon by clicking here.

Almost everyone who has worked in a newsroom has worked an election night. If you’re among that group, you might enjoy this look at the change in technology over election night coverage over the years.

General Manager News and Notes:

DIANE KNIOWSKI joins Univision as President and Regional GM of Local Media. She’s been a SVP and Regional for Nexstar and served for many years as GM of WOOD-TV in Grand Rapids, MI. The move reunites her with VINCE SADUSKY. He ran LIN Televison when it owned WOOD-TV.

Someone many of you (at least those who’ve worked at NBC affiliates in the last 20 years) might know is the new GM for WLNS-TV in Lansing, MI. SCOT CHASTAIN will run that CBS Affiliate.
