Monday, July 23, 2018 UPDATE#2:
For the second time today, we have an update in a large market.

Milstein
This from Seattle, where KIRO-TV News Director JAKE MILSTEIN is leaving this Cox owned CBS affiliate later this week for a ‘new adventure’. Here’s the very classy note he sent the staff.
Jake’s a ten year veteran of the station, previously serving as Managing Editor and Digital Manager before being named ND in 2014, replacing the retiring BOB JORDAN. Jake’s also worked in San Jose/San Francisco, Washington, and Santa Maria, CA.
One more item from yesterday’s newsletter. We erred when we told you that OSCAR GARCIA was the new Assistant ND at KRIV-TV in Houston. He’s the new Nightside Executive Producer for that FOX owned station.
Apologies for that, and we’ll try to be better next time!
regards,
Rick Gevers

Monday, July 23, 2018 UPDATE:
Greetings:
For the second time in two weeks, we have a new news director to tell you about in the Hartford/New Haven market.

Hundley
Today it’s JANET HUNDLEY who’s been named VP/News for WVIT-TV, the NBC owned station in Hartford. Here’s the note from General Manager SUSAN TULLY (herself a former ND in Dallas) to the staff.
Janet most recently was ND for WTMJ-TV (Scripps) in Milwaukee, a job she left in December after four years. Before that, much of career was with ABC owned stations:
12 years as Assistant ND at WLS-TV in Chicago
5 years as ND and Assistant ND for WTVG-TV in Toledo (then owned by ABC)
8 years at WTVD-TV in Raleigh/Durham as the operations manager, producer, and originally as a photojournalist.
She also worked for WRAL-TV in Raleigh and in Fayetteville, NC.
Janet replaces BEN DOBSON who was promoted to ND for the NBC owned station in Boston earlier this summer.
regards,
Rick Gevers

Greetings:
Always nice to meet some new people, and see old friends, as we did this week at the annual NAHJ conference in Miami. And we’ll look forward to a similar experience in a few weeks at the NABJ conference in Detroit.
A slow week on the ND front: TWO new news directors, one a first-timer, were named this week, while a veteran Omaha ND leaves her job, creating the ONE new opening for our list.
So..our count of open ND jobs stands at 33 open positions,
ONE of those 33 is among our THREE paid help wanted ads this week.
In Names in the News (and other stuff) we’ll share one columnist’s thoughts on the many developments this week in the Sinclair-Tribune deal.
Also in Names in the News, we have a number of new news managers to report, including TWO in Houston. There’s ONE new GM appointed this week, and we have an article profiling a Virginia station’s helicopter team.
Read on for that and more, and have a great week!
Newly Named News Directors:

Van Slyke
KAPP/KVEW-TV, Yakima, WA…congratulations to MATT VAN SLYKE who gets his first ND job at this Morgan Murphy Media duopoly. Matt was kind enough to send along this note:
Wanted to let you know I found out about the ND position at KAPP/KVEW from your newsletter and both the station and I are glad I did. I start August 6.
He’s been the Assistant ND at KSBY-TV in San Luis Obispo and has worked in San Francisco (two stations), Seattle and Sacramento (two stations). He replaces MIKE GONZALEZ who was both ND and anchor. Mike’s taken an on-air job in Phoenix.

Lortz
WOAY-TV, Oak Hill, WV…DENNIS LORTZ is the new news director for this locally owned (Thomas Broadcasting) ABC affiliate. Dennis most recently was the ND for WOWK-TV in Charleston/Huntington, WV. He’s been an ND in Scottsbluff, NE, worked on-air in Rapid City, SD, and as a producer in Dallas and Washington. Dennis also has worked on a number of syndicated programs. He replaces SCOTT PICKEY who left the station April after about 18 months as ND.

It was a turbulent week for the proposed Sinclair acquisition of Tribune Broadcasting. You might enjoy this column from TVNewsCheck’s HARRY JESSELL who looks at the winners and losers in the deal.

Wische
AARON WISCHE continues his move up the ladder at Houston’s KPRC-TV. He’s now the Assistant News Director for this Graham Media owned NBC station in his hometown. He had been the Senior EP of Special Projects and first joined the station in 2012. Aaron’s also worked for another Houston station and in Phoenix, Tampa, Washington, Dallas, Cleveland, and Tulsa.

Garcia
Another Houston management hire, as OSCAR GARCIA is the new nightside executive producer assistant news director (corrected 7/23/18) for KRIV-TV, the FOX owned station there. He most recently was the News Director for Tegna’s KIII-TV in Corpus Christi for two years, a job he left earlier this summer. Oscar knows his way around The Lone Star state: he worked for ten years for two different stations in El Paso before moving to Corpus Christi.

NICOLE WARREN has been promoted to Assistant ND at WTNH-TV in New Haven. She had been the executive producer for that Nexstar owned ABC affiliate, and previously worked for six years at WTIC-TV there. Of note: the man who promoted her to AND, news director KEITH CONNORS, exited a few days later for the ND job at WFSB-TV in Hartford.
And congratulations to JENNA STANLEY, wife of veteran news director and GM RANDAL STANLEY. She’s been promoted to VP/Finance for the Hearst Corporation.
