THREE New News Director openings, and FOUR newly named news directors make this week’s report an interesting read. One of those newly named ND is a former General Manager.

Those changes leave our list of open ND jobs at 27.

New News Director Openings:

KTVU-TV, Oakland/San Francisco, CA…LEE ROSENTHAL, GM TOM RAPONI, and the Cox Media Group ownership are all headed to Boston and current FOX o-and-o WFXT-TV. You likely know by now that Cox is trading KTVU to Fox for both WFXT and WHBQ-TV in Memphis. More below.

KSDK-TV, St. Louis, MO…after 33 years at the station, 14 as News Director, MIKE SHIPLEY has announced his retirement from the station. He’ll stay on until his replacement is hired. As you know if you clicked this link in our Wednesday UPDATE, I hired Mike as the Night Assignment Editor in 1981. He rose through the ranks, eventually becoming the Assistant ND, then ND in 2000. Mike previously worked for KLIK-AM in Jefferson City, MO, as well as at the campus radio station at Missouri, KCCS-AM, where we worked together while in school. He’s a class act and a true gentleman, and told me he plans to take some time off and then look for other opportunities.

WXXV-TV, Gulfport, MS…LON TEGELS is leaving this FOX/NBC operation owned by Morris Multimedia for a new job as Assistant News Director at WBRZ-TV in Baton Rouge. Lon started the news department there 16 months ago after spending ten years as an ND in Lima, OH. He’s previously worked as an ND in Rockford, IL, Des Moines, Sioux City, and St. Joseph, MO, and has also worked in Hartford, San Diego, Jacksonville, Richmond, Ft. Myers, Evansville, Boise, Cedar Rapids, and Kirksville, MO.

Newly Named News Directors:

Rosenthal

WFXT-TV, Boston, MA…our Wednesday update broke the news that LEE ROSENTHAL will become the ND here when Cox Media Group finalizes its purchase of this current FOX o-and-o. FOX gets Lee’s current station, KTVU-TV in San Francisco/Oakland, and Cox also gets WHBQ-TV in Memphis. Lee was ND here for about 18 months, spent more than four years as an ND in Indianapolis, and has also worked in Columbus, OH, Tampa, Knoxville, and Binghamton, NY. There’s no official word as to the future of current WFXT ND PAUL McGONAGLE. There are lots of rumors on the internet, which you’re welcome to Google.

WACH-TV, Columbia, SC…veteran broadcaster JERRY GIESLER is the new ND for this Sinclair owned FOX affiliate. He most recently spent nine years at the GM of a Granite-owned duopoly in Ft. Wayne, IN.  Jerry’s been a GM in a number of markets, including San Francisco, worked in the online world for a while, spent seven years as a consultant for Magid, and also worked in Phoenix as an Assistant ND. His Linkedin page has the whole story. At WACH, he replaces KEVIN PAZDERNIK who will remain with the station as the Special Projects Producer.

KVRR-TV, Fargo, ND…we’re a few weeks late in telling you about the promotion of LEZLIE JOHNSON to News Director here. She’s been a reporter and producer for this FOX affiliate for about a year, and has worked in Grand Forks and another Fargo station. Lezlie succeeds JIM SHAW who stepped down earlier this summer for medical reasons. Jim started the KVRR news department in 1999.

KTAB/KRBC-TV, Abilene, TX…we’re also a little tardy in reporting the promotion of MEGAN DOBBS to news director here. She’s been the executive producer and evening anchor for this CBS/NBC duopoly. Megan replaces KEVIN OSGOOD who left in July to become ND for sister-station WFRV-TV in Green Bay.

Wednesday, October 1, 2014 UPDATE #2

A major news director shift involving two top ten markets.

Rosenthal

LEE ROSENTHAL, currently ND at Cox Media Group’s KTVU-TV in Oakland/San Francisco, is being transferred by Cox to WFXT-TV in Boston. As you know, Cox is acquiring that station (and WHBQ-TV in Memphis) from FOX, in exchange for KTVU.

Lee’s been the ND at KTVU since April, 2013, and earlier had been the news director for WXIN-TV in Indianapolis for four years. He’s also worked in Columbus, OH, Tampa, Knoxville, and Binghamton, NY. A New York native, the move brings him closer to family.

The fate of current WFXT ND PAUL McGONAGLE is not yet known. There have been unconfirmed reports that he’s headed to the FOX station in Washington, WTTG-TV, replacing DANA HAHN, who would then go to KTVU.

The key word here is unconfirmed.

Now that I’ve confused you, I’ll hope to be able to clear this up in our full newsletter later this week.

One another note.  WISH-TV here in Indianapolis, the not-for-long CBS affiliate, announced its post-CBS programming schedule today.  No surprise, it features lots of news, nine hours a day.  Click here for more.

A veteran St. Louis news director is leaving his post.

MIKE SHIPLEY, who’s been the ND at Gannett’s KSDK-TV (NBC) for more than 14 of his 33 years at the station, announced his retirement from the station today. He’ll stay with the station during the transition.  Mike did tell me after some time off, he’ll explore other opportunities.

Mike first joined the station 1981 as the Night Assignment Editor. (How do I know that, you ask? Click here.)

He rose through the ranks, eventually becoming the Assistant News Director before moving into the ND job in March, 2000.

Mike worked for KLIK radio in Jefferson City, MO, before joining KSDK in his hometown. We also worked together at the campus radio station at the University of Missouri, KCCS, when we were both students there.

He’s a true gentleman and one of the nicest people in the business. I wish him well.

She’s been the News Director for this FOX affiliate since 2007, and spent eleven years as the Assistant ND there before that. Sonya’s also worked for WBBM-TV in Chicago as a producer and EP, and she’s worked in Raleigh and Miami as well.

KTIV-TV, Sioux City, IA…more congratulations to BRIDGET BREEN, who’s been both the Station Manager and News Director for this Quincy owned NBC affiliate. She’s now dropping the ND responsibilities and is on the hunt for her replacement. Bridget first joined the station in 1993 as an intern, was hired in 1994 as a morning assistant producer, and has worked as a reporter, producer, assignment editor, ND and station manager. She’s a Sioux City native, as well!

He’s been the ND for Sinclair’s Columbus, OH, duopoly, WSYX/WTTE-TV, and follows his Columbus General Manager, DAN MELLON to WJLA. Mitch is a former ND in Toledo and Phoenix. WSYX/WTTE-TV, Columbus, OH…where JAIME JUSTICE will replace Mitch as news director. She’s been the Assistant ND for this Sinclair-owned duopoly (ABC/FOX) for more than six years. She worked in Cleveland for six years before that, and earlier in her career was a producer in Savannah, GA. Mitch was ND here for more than five years.

KEYE-TV, Austin, TX…ROB CARTWRIGHT has been named ND for this CBS affiliate. We told you a few weeks ago that Rob was leaving his job at WSYR-TV in Syracuse to take a job closer to family in Texas. He spent almost three years in Syracuse, but earlier had worked in Dallas and San Antonio, as well as in Washington, DC. At KEYE, he replaces GREG TURCHETTA who left this Sinclair owned station last month after two years as ND for a non-TV job in Florida.

Houston

WBMA/WCFT/WJSU-TV, Birmingham, AL…JEFF HOUSTON has been promoted to news director for this ABC operation. He’s been the Assistant ND there for almost a year, and the interim ND since the station’s first news director GARRY KELLY left after 18 years as ND for a GM job in Virginia earlier this summer.  Jeff started his career in Augusta, GA, spent four years as an ND in Tupelo, MS, and also worked in Atlanta, Jacksonville, FL, and Norfolk, VA.

Since we were just talking about Ft. Myers, we should tell you that old friend and longtime newsman JOHN RINKENBAUGH is easing his way out of the business. He’s following his passion and is buying a running store in Ft. Myers, but will continue to work at WFTX-TV there through this year’s elections. He’s no stranger to the sport…John’s been running marathons since he was 14. John’s been an ND in a number of markets and worked in many others. His Linkedin page has the whole story.

WBAY-TV in Green Bay has promoted PAT MAYO to executive producer. He’s been the sports producer. Pat’s been at this station for 15 years and has overseen the station’s Packers’ coverage.

Former Dayton and Boise ND JULIE WEINDEL returns to the West as Assistant ND for NBC Montana, based at KTVM-TV in Bozeman. She’s been working as an EP in Tulsa, and has also worked in Cincinnati.

RILEY EVERSULL returns to WCTI-TV in Greenville, NC, as the EP. She began her career there, and has worked in Dothan, AL, and Tupelo.

Grandy

BYRON GRANDY, who’s been the General Manager for Scripps’ KMGH-TV in Denver since 2008, has resigned that position and left the station, according to this story from the Denver Post. Byron had been ND at the station for more than seven years, and earlier served as an ND in San Antonio, Lubbock and Augusta, GA. He began his career as a reporter and also worked for the Broadcast Image Group as a consultant. Scripps executive STEVE WASSERMAN will be the acting GM. Steve, also a former ND, is a GM for the Scripps station in West Palm Beach, FL, and serves as a Division General Manager.

Of note. The station is also without a news director, as JEFF HARRIS starts next Monday as ND for sister-Scripps station WEWS-TV in Cleveland.

Just ONE newly named ND in this week’s report, while there are, to my knowledge, NO new openings. That shrinks our list of open ND jobs to 27.

THREE of those openings are featured in paid help wanted ads below, including a new ad for an ND job at a legacy station in New York City.

We have obituaries for a tabloid news pioneer and the father of a former ND turned consulting firm executive. There are new Assistant NDs in Dallas, Phoenix, and New Orleans. Obituaries:

IAN RAE, who was the founding EP of the TV program “A Current Affair”, and was a longtime News Corp. employee, died at the age of 78. He was also a senior producer for the Fox News Channel. The New York Post has more in this story.

JAMIE IOOS has been promoted to Assistant ND for KNXV-TV in Phoenix, She’s been an EP there, and is a former ND in Las Vegas and Albuquerque.

DONOVAN MYRIE joins Gannett’s WWL-TV in New Orleans as Assistant ND. He most recently has been teaching journalism at the University of South Florida-St. Petersburg. Veteran General Manager NICK NICHOLSON joins Scripps as GM of the company’s Tampa ABC affiliate, WFTS-TV. He most recently was GM of KTVK-TV in Phoenix before that station was sold to Meredith. He’s a former GM in Norfolk and Tucson, and has worked in Dallas, Orlando, and Tulsa.

KARI JACOBS has been promoted to GM of WVEC-TV in Norfolk. She had been Director of Sales for that Gannett station.

BOBBY BERRY has been named COO of the Morris Network television group, replacing DEAN HINSON, who is retiring. Berry has been GM of Morris’ WCBI-TV in Columbus, MS, where he’ll be replaced by Derek Rogers, who has been the GM of another Morris station, WMGT-TV in Macon, GA.

A very busy week.  SIX news director departures doing the week, with THREE open jobs being filled.

Our list of open ND jobs balloons to 28.

We have paid help wanted ads for TWO of those openings, along with an ad for a job in sunny Orlando.

Culver

WJLA-TV, Washington, DC…DOUG CULVER left this newly-acquired-by-Sinclair-ABC affiliate on Sunday after a little more than two years as ND. I’m told that Managing Editor DAN PATRICK left the station as well. (GM BILL LORD, a former ND, left the station after Sinclair took over.) Doug’s been an ND in Tampa, and a news manager in Seattle and Los Angeles, where he also worked with Bill Lord.

Beck

KTVK-TV, Phoenix, AZ…CAMERYN BECK is joining Scripps as a Senior Director of News Strategy, one of two such positions as Scripps. She’ll report to VP/News SEAN McLAUGHLIN. (Here’s the company’s news release.) Cameryn’s been ND here for about 18 months, spent eight years at KOVR-TV in Sacramento (five as ND) and also worked for ten years at KCRA-TV in Sacramento. As you know, KTVK has recently been purchased by Meredith, which also owns KPHO-TV in Phoenix, and no decision has been made on how or whether to replace Cameryn.

Roth

WJZY/WMYT-TV, Charlotte, NC…we told you earlier this week that GEOFF ROTH was returning to Houston as Managing Editor at KRIV-TV. Geoff was working at KRIV when FOX (which owns both stations) dispatched him to Charlotte last summer to begin the news operation at WJZY-TV. His family remained in Houston. Geoff’s been an ND for KSTU-TV in Salt Lake City (when FOX owned that station). He’s also been an ND in San Diego, Ft. Myers, for two stations in Fresno, and spent a year teaching at Hofstra. He’s also worked for CNN, and in Washington, DC, Pittsburgh, Denver, Miami, Jacksonville, FL, and Richmond.

KCTV, Kansas City, MO…in another move we shared with you via an UPDATE earlier this week, LARRY PERRET is headed from one Meredith station to another, WGCL-TV in Atlanta. More on that below.

WSYR-TV, Syracuse, NY…this Nexstar owned ABC affiliate is losing News Director ROB CARTWRIGHT to a new opportunity. Rob tells me he and his family are headed to Texas to be closer to family, and promises more details soon, so stay tuned. Rob’s previously worked as an Assistant ND in Dallas (KDAF-TV), an EP at WJLA-TV in Washington, and as a producer in Dallas and San Antonio. WLTZ-TV, Columbus, GA…this SagamoreHill owned NBC affiliate is looking for a new news director.

New England Cable News, Boston, MA…KENNY PLOTNIK returns to a newsroom as VP of this Comcast/NBC owned cable news operation. Kenny’s spent 25 years at WABC-TV, the ABC o-and-o, ending a ten year run as ND in 2012. He’d also been the Assistant ND and Managing Editor there. Kenny’s also worked at another ABC o-and-o, WPVI-TV in Philadelphia, and in Buffalo. At NECN, he replaces NANETTE HOBSON who left in early May after 2+ years as ND.

Perret

WGCL-TV, Atlanta, GA…LARRY PERRET has been named News Director for this Meredith owned CBS affiliate. He joins the station from another Meredith owned CBS affiliate, KCTV where he’d been ND for less than a year. Interestingly, GM TREY FABACHER left the station the same day as Larry’s hire was announced. Larry’s background is long and varied: his Linkedin page has the full story. He replaces LANE MICHAELSEN who left the station earlier this summer and is now working as a regional news executive for Sinclair.

Ryan

WKTV, Utica, NY…JEREMY RYAN is the new ND for this NBC affiliate owned by Heartland Media. He’s been the ‘news resource manager’ for WSYM/WTVH-TV in Syracuse, where he’s worked since 2007. This item on the station’s website points out that Jeremy worked as a director at WKTV before. He replaces STEVE McMURRAY who’s been both GM and ND (and anchor of the 6:00 news) since he was promoted to GM last March.

You have probably visited Orlando, how about working here full-time?

News 13 is looking for a new Assignment Manager.

We’re a 24-hour local news channel serving Central Florida.

We’re owned by Bright House Networks, the dominant cable company in the area.

We’re an hour from the ocean and 90 minutes from the Gulf of Mexico.

You’ll supervise a team of 5 assignment and planning editors. You’ll work with the news staff on building great content to share on our TV channel, as well as our web and mobile screens. Breaking news is a big deal for us, but so is coverage of key stories across the nine counties we call home.

ROBERTA PETTERSON, one time Nashville ND and current Assistant ND at WSMV-TV, is heading out on her own. She tells me she’s going to pursue her dream of teaching yoga. Roberta spent more than 2 1/2 years as ND of WZTV in Nashville, and has also worked in Pittsburgh, Cleveland and Tulsa.

McManus-Faye

KATIE McMANUS-FAYE is headed back to Savannah as Assistant ND for WTOC-TV, the Raycom owned station. She began her career as an anchor/reporter at WSAV-TV there. She most recently was an ND in Springfield/Champaign, IL, has also been an ND in Jackson, TN, and Sarasota, and has worked in Nashville, Miami (two stations), Tampa, and Dallas.
