August 22, 2022
Wednesday, August 24, 2022 UPDATE:
Greetings:
A veteran news director gets her next job.

Bauer
NANCY BAUER heads to Nexstar’s KTVX-TV in Salt Lake City as that ABC affiliate’s next ND. Until June, she was the ND for Scripps’ KTNV-TV (also ABC) in Las Vegas. Nancy joined KTNV from Scripps’ KERO-TV in Bakersfield where she worked for two years. She spent 20 years as an ND in Los Angeles for two different o-and-o’s and nine months as an ND in San Diego. She also spent almost three years running a cable news operation in LA county.
In Salt Lake City, she replaces TODD REED who left in February to become ND for Scripps’ KGTV (ABC) in San Diego, where he left after four months.
And thanks to the eagle eyed readers who pointed out that (again, without the permission of station owners OR the FCC) I relocated a station in last week’s full edition. KPTM-TV is, of course, in Omaha, not Rochester, NY as I wrote.
See you this weekend.
regards,
Rick Gevers

Greetings:
If you see more typos this week than usual, that’s because my favorite punching bag, Constant Contact, has once again “improved’ its product and made it much worse from the user (me!) standpoint.
But don’t let that distract you from the SIX new ND’s named with TWO new openings, resulting in a drop to just 22 openings. THREE of those openings are advertised in Paid Help Wanted Ads below.
A reminder that the pre-registation deadline for the annual RTDNA convention, to be held in Indianapolis, is this week. Details in the ad below.
No obituaries this week, there’s ONE GM retirement (which creates an ND opening as someone moves into the ‘corner office’), Nexstar buys the CW, and a longtime network head is stepping down next month.
All that and more as you read on.
Newly Named News Directors:

Sarah
WTLV/WJXX-TV, Jacksonville, FL..SARAH BRYANT-HOLCOMB has been promoted to news director for this Tegna owned NBC/ABC duopoly. Here’s the press release .She’s been the Assistant ND there past year and a half or so and the interim ND since JOE INDERHEES left in March after about three years as ND. Sarah has also worked in Chicago and Sioux Falls.

Herman
WTKR-TV, Norfolk, VA…this Scripps owned CBS affiliate has tabbed ALLISON HERMAN as its next news director. Like Sarah above, she’s been the assistant news director here for about a year but has a longer resume, which you can see by checking out her LinkedIn page. At WTKR, she replaces GERARDO LOPEZ who left in July to become ND for CBS’s WBZ-TV in Boston after less than a year at WTKR.

Roth
KPTM-TV, Rochester, NY Omaha, NE…GEOFF ROTH returns to an Omaha newsroom as news manager for this FOX affiliate owned by Sinclair. Geoff tells me he’ll oversee the reporting and digital staffs based in Omaha. (The newscasts are anchored from a Sinclair station in Fresno). Geoff had been the ND for KMTV in Omaha for three years, before taking a job in January with Northwest Public Broadcasting in Washington State.

Pelliccia
WROC-TV, Rochester, NY…RORY PELLICCIA has been promoted from Assignment Manager to News Director for this Nexstar owned CBS affiliate. Rory has been at the station for 15 years. He replaces STEVE KOLES who left the station in June after three years as news director. Steve’s also been an ND in Columbus, OH and Kalamazoo-Battle Creek, MI and has worked in Providence, Tulsa, Baltimore, and Norfolk.

Buttaccio
WHAM-TV, Rochester, NY…there’s a new ND at another Rochester station. But he’s not new to the station. ED BUTTACIO returns to this ABC affiliate as the ND. Earlier in his career he was a producer here before a long career at cable operations in Rochester. At WHAM, Ed replaces SERENA ROMERO who left in June after a year as ND. WHAM is owned by Deerfield Media but operated by Sinclair which owns the FOX station in Rochester.

Carlson
KRNV-TV, Reno, NV…another Sinclair operation brings in a station veteran as MELISSA CARLSON returns as news director for this NBC affiliate. Here’s her station bio where you’ll learn that she had been at the station for two years in 2001 before working for Hearst at WBAL-TV in Baltimore. At KRNV, she replaces GREG SCHIEFERSTEIN who left in April after three years as ND.

Schmaltz

Here’s the memo to the staff, and here’s a story from the website. Trey’s been at the station 12 years and ND for about 18 months. The search is on for Trey’s replacement: details in the Paid Help Wanted ad below.
WKBT-TV, LaCrosse, WI…CHRISTI REYNARD has left this Morgan Murphy Media owned CBS station after just over a year as news director. That creates a rare news director opening here (only two in 30 years!) You can learn more about the opportunity in the Paid Help Wanted ad below.
Paid Help Wanted Ads:
News Director, WBRZ-TV, Baton Rouge, LA:
WBRZ has an incredible opportunity for a charismatic newsroom leader, show doctor and content innovator to lead our breaking and investigative journalism team as DIRECTOR OF NEWS.
Executive news leadership positions at WBRZ are rare. The family-owned television station makes the rules and breaks them.
Like any other news station, the news director at WBRZ oversees the journalism operation but must be willing to get their hands dirty, try new things and use research to drive coverage and viewership growth. WBRZ is renowned for its dogged investigative journalism. A knack for navigating complex stories, creativity and a passion for coaching is a necessity.
Newsroom management experience is required.
Equally important is understanding the audience and knowing how to manage expectations. A producing background is ideal. Knowledge of managing a budget, resources and mentoring a larger staff are crucial. Email cover letter and resumes to Trey Schmaltz; trey@wbrz.com.
News Director, WKBT-TV, La Crosse, WI:
News 8 Now/WKBT-TV has a rare opening for a News Director to lead our team in one of Wisconsin’s best cities to live in. La Crosse is a university town, a regional health care center and city with a rich history. La Crosse is home to three institutions of higher learning. La Crosse is also home to top rated Gunderson Health System as well as having a Mayo Clinic Health System hospital and regional clinics.
News Director openings at WKBT-TV are rare. We’ve only had two in 30 years! We are looking for someone to break the mold and connect with local audiences in a new way. We produce 20+ hours of television news a week and embrace coverage through our app, social, web site and streaming video channels resulting in a digital leadership position in the market. The right candidate will have a proven track record of audience growth and will understand how to build emerging platforms.
We are committed to quality journalism. We are proud of being honored as the Small Market Television Station of the Year from the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association eight times.
In this role, you’ll be asked to set and execute a strategy for audience growth with a content editorial team. You’ll lead efforts to build and retain a top-notch staff. You’ll need to be aggressive moving resources to meet the demand of a shifting local news marketplace. You’ll be asked to make critical editorial decisions with a deep understanding of journalism ethics.
