January 23, 2022

Wednesday, January 26, 2022 UPDATE:

Greetings:

Big new jobs today for two former news directors.

Matthews

CHAD MATTHEWS, currently the GM for WABC-TV in New York and a former ND there, has been named President of the ABC owned stations group. Details in this story from the WABC website. Chad has spent most of his career at WABC, absent a five year run as the Assistant ND for WTVJ-TV (NBC owned) in Miami. He replaces WENDY McMAHON who left to become co-head of CBS News and Stations.

Collura

And a new job for a former news director turned general manager. DEBORAH COLLURA returns to Sacramento as GM for CBS’s KOVR-KMAX-TV. She spent five years as Ass’t. ND there earlier in her career before moving on to ND jobs in Minneapolis, Miami, Detroit and Houston as well as an executive news role for Post-Newsweek. Her first GM job was at WCNC-TV (Tegna/NBC) in Charlotte (4 1/2 years) and later WGCL-TV (then Meredith, now Gray/CBS) in Atlanta (1 1/2 years). More on her appointment here.

Congrats to both Chad and Deb.

We’ll see you next weekend with our full report.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Greetings:

Hope ‘BOUT those NFL playoff games?

They were interesting and we have some interesting stories this week, along with a number of new openings and new news directors.

THREE new news directors and FOUR new openings, leaving 42 stations with news director openings.

Sadly (at least for me) there are no paid help wanted ads!

However, we do welcome STRINGR back as an annual advertiser and thank then for their support. Take a second to click on their link just below to learn more about the company.

Also this week, news of the upcoming retirement of a small (but important) group CEO. Her company quickly promoted her replacement.

And there’s very interesting story in Names in News (and other things):

Affiliation changes, while not new, are infrequent. But have you ever heard of one where the change took place THE VERY NEXT DAY? We’ve got that story below, as well as a number of news managers on the move…and a step out of the newsroom into a new venture for a three time ND.

Finally, last week (in the emailed version of the newsletter) we screwed up the last name of CHAD CROSS, who’s leaving KXAN-TV in Austin, TX, to join a new CBS project. Apologies to Chad Cross and to CHAD COOK, whose name we mistakenly used. (Many of you may know Chad Cook, who is VP of Creative Services for our friends at Stephen Arnold Music.)

Have a great week.

Newly Named News Directors:

Shriner

WAVE-TV, Louisville, KY…Gray Television has promoted JENELLE SHRINER to news director for this NBC affiliate. It’s her third ND job for the company…she’s the ND at KOLD-TV (CBS) in Tucson, and first joined Raycom (which Gray later acquired) as ND at KPLC-TV (NBC) in Lake Charles, LA. She replaces DAN FABRIZIO who was promoted to ND for Gray’s WSMV-TV (NBC) in Nashville after 2 1/2 years as ND here.

Peterson

WTVA-TV, Tupelo, MS….PAT PETERSON gets a new job but stays in Mississippi as he’ll be the next ND for this Allen Media owned NBC/ABC operation. He’s spent the last five yers as ND for WTOK-TV in Meridian, MS, and earlier worked for 16 years at WKRG-TV (CBS) in Mobile. Pat replaces LIZ ZAMORA who left in December after 2 1/2 years as news director.

Rinaldi

KXMB-TV, Bismarck, ND…JOSEPH RINALDI joins this Nexstar owned CBS affiliate as its next news director. He’s currently a producer for Sinclair’s Full Measure with Sheryl Attkisson in Washington, DC. He’s also worked as a producer for Sinclair stations in Nashville and Tri-Cities, WA. Joseph is also a contributor to USA Boxing News. We told you in November that TIA STREETER was leaving the station.

New News Director Openings:

KOLD-TV, Tucson, AZ…you learned above that JENELLE SHRINER is moving to sister Gray station WAVE-TV in Louisville as ND.

Lamont

KMIR-TV, Palm Springs, CA…this Entravision owned NBC affiliate is advertising for a news director to replace GINO LAMONT who has left the station. He was promoted to ND in 2018, and first joined the station as a photographer and advanced to evening anchor, a job he continued to do while serving as news director. His replacement will be the fourth news director in five years.

WTOK-TV, Meridian, MS…this Gray owned ABC affiliate has a news director opening. We told you earlier that PAT PETERSON was leaving to become ND for WTVA-TV in Tupelo, MS.

Javid

KAEF-TV, Eureka, CA…NAZY JAVID is leaving one Sinclair Broadcasting station for another. She’s been the ND and anchor here and is moving to KRCR-TV in Redding, CA, where she will anchor the morning newscast and also serve as the assistant news director.

Names in the News:

A fairly unusual affiliation switch in tiny Marquette, MI (#183). Nexstar’s WJMN-TV announced last Thursday it would no longer be a CBS affiliate, EFFECTIVE THE VERY NEXT DAY! Lilly Broadcasting’s WZMQ-TV soon after claimed the affiliation, and has announced plans to expand local news coverage. That would leave FOUR stations doing news in that small market. Learn more in this story from Northpine.com

Gurney

JEFF GURNEY has been named Assistant News Director for CBS’s KCNC-TV in Denver. He’s been an EP there and succeeds KRISTINE STRAIN who will be his new boss as she was named ND late last year. A number of management promotions at Scripps:

SEAN HIRSHBERG is bumped up to Assistant ND for KSHB-TV (NBC) in Kansas City. He’s been an EP there.

NICOLE BUCKLEY becomes Assistant ND (they call it Editorial Director) at Milwaukee’s WTMJ-TV (NBC). She has been Senior Manager of Enterprise and Investigative Content. Here’s the note from News Director TIM VETSCHER.

Telemundo has named a new news management team.

And CBS named new leadership for CBS Newspath, CBS News streaming and a new bureau chief in Washington.

January 17, 2022

Greetings:

Movement slowed this week, with just ONE new opening and 1 1/2 newly named NDs. (How, you wonder is there a 1/2 news director? I’m told the job has been filled but haven’t confirmed the name.)

Our total of open ND jobs moves to 41 with TWO of those jobs featured in Paid Help Wanted ads below.

There wasn’t much movement in other areas, either. Just ONE new GM and ONE item in Names in the News…that an on-air tribute for a Louisville news director who’s off to a new job.

A reminder: please send me your news items.

We’ll see you next Sunday, hopefully with more news.

Newly Named News Directors:

Gonzalez

KTAZ/KHRR-TV, Phoenix/Tucson, AX…NOE GONZALEZ returns to Arizona as news director for these Telemundo stations. He had been the Assistant ND for KTAZ until 2019, when he was transferred to Telemundo’s Salt Lake City station, KULX-TV as news director. More details in this story from TV Newscheck.com. He replaces MIKE GAYTAN who moved to KUAN-TV in San Diego as ND last November.

WOAY-TV, Oak Hill, WV…I am told that there is a new news director for this locally owned ABC affiliate, but I have not yet been able to confirm the name. Being old-fashioned, I’ll report it when I can confirm it. TYLER BARKER was named ND here in May, 2019, and was also chief meteorologist.

New News Director Openings:

Parquet-Taylor

KCBS/KCAL-TV, Los Angeles, CA…ANDREA PARQUET-TAYLOR is returning to Dallas as Vice President, CW and Independent Stations News Director for CBS. It’s a new job and part of a local news innovation lab the company is developing. Andrea had been ND at KCBS for 13 months. She’s a former ND at CBS’s Dallas station as well as in Detroit, Baltimore, and Raleigh (two stations). Her replacement will be the fourth ND since SCOTT DIENER left 6 1/2 years ago after a 5 1/2 year run.

Cross

The new CBS project also answer the question of the destination of CHAD CROSS. We told you last week that he was leaving Nexstar’s KXAN-TV (NBC) in Austin, TX, after ten years for a new job. That job (as detailed in the news release above) will be VP, Content Development, CBS Stations. also based in Dallas. Chad’s a former ND in Wichita as well.

January 9, 2022

Tuesday, January 11, 2022 UPDATE:

Greetings:

CBS has announced a new initiative and tabbed one of its o-and-o news directors…and a veteran ND who’s leaving an NBC affiliate…to run the project.

Parquet-Taylor

Rather than try and explain it, I’ll let you read the news release. You’ll learn that ANDREA PARQUET TAYLOR is leaving the ND job at KCBS/KCAL-TV in Los Angeles after a year to return to Dallas and KTVT-TV, where this initiative will be based. Andrea had been the news director at KTVT before being promoted to Station Manager in 2018, and moving to Los Angeles as ND about a year ago. She’s been a news director in Detroit, Baltimore, and Raleigh (two stations).

Cross

And longtime Austin news director CHAD CROSS is also involved. We told you this weekend that Chad was leaving KXAN-TV (Nexstar owned) for the proverbial job to be announced soon. True to his word, Chad let me know of his new job today.

We’ll be back this weekend with our full newsletter.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Greetings:

It didn’t take long for 2022 to see the first week with 40 41 news director openings.

One year ago this week there were 13.

I’d guess there are many reasons for the increase. You can probably figure them out for yourself.

This week, FOUR new openings, with TWO jobs filled. (One of those filled jobs was the ‘well known’ ND hire I’d teased for a week or two.)

THREE of those 40 openings are among our FOUR Paid Help Wanted ads. The fourth ad is for an EP opening in Texas.

We’ve got an obituary for a 30+ year veteran of CBS News.

In Names in the News, we’ll link to a profile of one of the very first TV agents who is retiring. There’s a promotion at Scripps, and some movement at local stations.

And Hearst promotes a senior executive.

All this and more as you read on while I mourn the complete and total collapse of the Indianapolis Colts.

Oh, did I mention it was embarrassing, too?

Newly Named News Directors:

Hume

WBRE/WYOU-TV, Wilkes-Barre, PA…CRAIG HUME joins this Nexstar owned NBC affiliate and operated CBS station as the next ND. Craig most recently was ND for KAAL-TV in Rochester, MN, a job he left last November after two years, the latest stop in a career that has taken him across the country with ND jobs in markets both very large and pretty small. Details here. He’s replacing KEITH ST. PETER who left in June and is now an EP for KNXV-TV (Scripps/ABC) in Phoenix.

Parker

KIEM/KVIQ-TV, Eureka, CA…JIM PARKER returns to a news director job as he’s been hired at this Cox Media Group duopoly. He’s currently the Director of Digital Content for News Press & Gazette’s KVIA-TV in El Paso. His entire career history is here. (It does not include his first job in TV, at WTOL-TV in Toledo where I hired him as the morning producer.)

New News Director Openings:

Neerman

KPIX-TV, San Francisco, CA…MARK NEERMAN has left this CBS owned station after 3+ years as news director. I spoke with Mark who told me he’ll take some time to consider his next move. Before KPIX, Mark was ND for KSNV-TV in Las Vegas, where he also held regional responsibilities for Sinclair. He’s also been an ND for another Vegas station, in Louisville and Richmond, and has worked in Portland, OR, Miami, and Columbia, MO and for another San Francisco station.

Fitzgerald

KIAH-TV, Houston, TX…this Nexstar owned CW affiliate is advertising for a new news director. (You can see that ad just below.) SCOTT FITZGERALD, who’s been the Director of Operations and de facto ND, is leaving to become Regional Sales Manager Southwest for Newtek, a video software and technology company. He’s a former ND in Tulsa and Reno.

Cross

KXAN-TV, Austin, TX…after 9 1/2 years as ND for this Nexstar owned NBC affiliate, CHAD CROSS is leaving for a new job which he promises to share soon, perhaps as quickly as this week. He’s a former ND for KWCH-TV in Wichita where he worked for ten years, the last four as ND. Learn more about this opportunity in the Paid Help Wanted Ad below.

Roth

KMTV, Omaha, NE…GEOFF ROTH is on the move. Again. 🙂 The veteran newsman is off to Washington State as Multi Platform News Director for Northwest Public Broadcasting. Geoff’s Linkedin Post describes what he’ll be doing and who he’ll be doing it for. And his Linkedin profile outlines his career path. He spent 3+ years as ND here, by my count his eighth ND job.

January 2, 2022

Greetings:

I’m sure you join me in hoping that 2022 is better for all of us than 2021…and 2020, for that matter.

ONE new news director position was filled this week, while TWO opened up, leaving our always unofficial list of ND openings at 39.

ONE of those new openings is among our THREE Paid Help Wanted ads.

It’s (as you might expect) a slow week with NO news about general managers and (happily) NO obituaries.

In Names in the News, a new job for a former Sinclair news executive, another CNN producer leaves the network amid accusations of sexual misconduct, and a lawsuit against AT&T over retransmission fees takes a step forward. The station owner involved alleges racial discrimination.

I expect more activity this week, including a new job for a veteran ND whose name has frequently appeared in these pages.

Until then, have a great New Year!

Newly Named News Director:

Moravchik

WBAY-TV, Green Bay, WI…JULIE MORAVCHIK returns to Green Bay and starts tomorrow as the new ND for this Gray owned ABC affiliate. She earlier spent 2 1/2 years as ND for WGBA-TV, before heading to Milwaukee, first working at Spectrum News and then WITI-TV (FOX), where she spent two years as News Content Manager. She’s been an ND in Jefferson City, MO, Grand Forks, ND, and in Duluth, and also worked in Minneapolis. Julie replaces MATT KUMMER who moved to Gray’s WVLT-TV in Knoxville late last year as ND after eight years as ND here.

New News Director Openings:

Boan

WLNE-TV, Providence, RI…KELLY BOAN is being promoted to the corporate to work on a new project. It’s a quick rise to corporate for Kelly, who joined this Standard Media owned CBS ABC affiliate as ND last summer. She spent 16 years at WHNS-TV (a FOX now owned by Gray but Meredith when she worked there), the last eight as ND and the very last year as ND and Station Manager.

Spencer

KOAM-TV, Pittsburg, KS/Joplin, MO…KRISTI SPENCER left this Morgan Murphy Media owned CBS affiliate last month after 23 years as news director. Her Linkedin Page shows she is self-employed as a consultant for the Etiquette Company, a role she also held during part of her tenure at KOAM. You can learn more about this opportunity by checking out the Paid Help Wanted ad just below.
