Greetings:

A flurry of news director moves to share, including one in the number two market.

Chen

At KABC-TV (ABC, obviously) in Los Angeles, PAM CHEN has been promoted to News Director. She first joined KABC in 2004, and has served as Assistant News Director since 2004. Pam’s career path is detailed in the station’s news release. She’s also worked for another LA station and in San Diego.

She replaces ROB ELMORE who left this summer to return to ABC’s WTVD-TV in Raleigh-Durham as GM. Rob spent five years as ND at KABC, following 17 years as ND at WTVD.

Briefly:

SHARRANDA NEAL has been promoted to ND for Tegna’s WLTX-TV (CBS) in Columbia, SC. replacing JULIE EISENMANN. We told you this weekend that Julie had vacated the ND job: what we did not know then…and can share now…is that Julie’s been named Director of Content for the station, and will also have some oversight of other Tegna properties.

DAVID JONES is the next ND for Standard Media’s WLNE-TV (ABC) in Providence. He most recently was ND at WNYT-TV, Hubbard’s NBC affiliate in Albany, NY. He replaces KELLY JOHNSTON.

And Standard Media named JENNIFER HARDY ND for KLKN-TV in Lincoln, NE. She left WWSB-TV (Gray/ABC) in Sarasota, FL in June. Jennifer replaces MIKE SNUFFER who left for family reasons last month after six months as ND.

And GREG DeBROSSE joins KPLC-TV (Gray/NBC) in Lake Charles, LA, coming from the Assistant ND job at KOKI-TV (Cox Media Group/FOX) in Tulsa. He replaces JENELLE SHREINER who was promoted to ND for KOLD-TV in Tucson.

This week we have FIVE new news director openings. (Last week we had FIVE newly named NDs.) But there’s just ONE newly named ND this week.

Our list of open ND jobs jumps to 32.

Man bites dog? A TV station is suing for racial discrimination instead of being the defendant in such an action. We have TWO management appointments at Nexstar stations, and a new job for a former Tribune executive who started his career as a meteorologist.

We have several new GMs, including ONE in a top 25 market.

And sadly there’s an obituary for a longtime journalism educator with a most interesting background.

WANE-TV, Ft. Wayne, IN…JENNA HUFF moves north (and closer to her native Michigan as she’s been named ND for this Nexstar owned CBS affiliate. Here’s the note from GM TOM ANTISDEL. For the last nine years, Jenna has been the ND for WFXL-TV in Albany, GA, and five years ago added ND oversight for sister Sinclair operation WGXA-TV in Macon, GA. Jenna’s also worked in Knoxville. She’ll replace 16 year veteran ND TED LINN. We told you in June that he would retire in September.

New News Director Openings:

WCAU-TV, Philadelphia, PA…NBC was busy this week, promoting TWO o-and-o NDs to new jobs. Here, ANZIO WILLIAMS has been named VP for Diversity for NBC News Senior Vice-Presdient for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion for the NBC owned stations gr0up. This news release explains his role in this new job. He’s been ND here for more than eight years. He previously spent five years as ND for Hearst’s KCRA-TV (NBC) in Sacramento and two years as ND for another Hearst station, WDSU-TV (also NBC) in New Orleans. He’s also worked in Orlando, Charlotte, Cincinnati, Miami, and Greensboro, NC.

WTVJ-TV, Miami, FL…in the second of TWO promotions for an NBC o-and-o news director, MIGDALIA FIGUEROA is moving to Orlando where she’ll be GM for sister NBC/Telemundo station WTMO-TV. More in this news release. She’s been ND at WTVJ for eight years and has also worked in New York and for the Univision station in Miami.

KIRO-TV, Seattle, WA…JOHN LaPORTE is leaving this Cox Media Group owned CBS affiliate next month to return to Milwaukee, where he worked before becoming ND at KIRO a little more than a year ago. In Milwaukee, John previously served as ND for FOX affiliate WITI-TV. Now, he’ll be the Assistant ND for Weigel’s WDJT-TV (CBS). John’s been an ND in several other markets and worked in a few others: His Linkedin page has more.

WLNE-TV, Providence, RI…this Standard Media owned ABC affiliate is looking for a new news director. KELLY JOHNSTON had been the ND for the last four years in her second tour of duty with the station. She began in 1999 in production, moved to news in 2005, eventually become Senior Producer. She left in 2013 to spend time with her family before coming back in 2016 to be ND.

WLTX-TV, Columbia, SC…this Tegna owned CBS affiliate is advertising for a new news director. My records show that JULIE EISENMANN has been the ND here for the past three years. Before that, she was Assistant ND for sister-Tegna station WXIA-TV in Atlanta. Julie’s been an ND in Savannah and Erie, PA, where she also had reported and anchored, and earlier worked on the assignment desk in Pittsburgh.

Obituary:

Ralph L.

Longtime journalism educator RALPH LOWENSTEIN died Monday. He was 90 and suffered a massive stroke. He served as dean of Florida’s College of Journalism and Communications from 1976 to 1994, and in 1971 forecast a day when people could retrieve large amounts of information online from central computers. The Miami Herald published a lengthy obituary well worth your time. He also taught at Missouri, and fought as a volunteer in Israel’s 1948 war for independence. Our sympathy to his wife and two children.

Many stations have been sued for racial discrimination, but in a ‘man bites dog’ turnaround, WISH-TV is suing AT&T. Here’s the story from the WISH website.

KOIN-TV in Portland, OR (CBS/Nexstar) has filled its open Assistant ND job by promoting ALLISON ANSLINGER. I believe she was an EP there, and has previously worked in Boston and Las Vegas.

RICK BOONE joins Nexstar’s KARD-TV in W. Monroe, LA, as Executive Producer. When last mentioned in these pages (July, 2019) he had left a short-lived ND job in Kentucky to return to California to run for the Palo Alto City Council.

Congratulations to digital whiz STEVE BARON who joins the Local Media Association as Chief Strategy Officer, Steve most recently served as a VP for Tribune. He also worked for Local TV, LLC, as VP of Interactive Content and also worked for WFLD-TV (FOX) in Chicago helping establish a website presence. He began his career on-air, working as a meteorologist in several markets. Full disclosure: I represented Steve during his on-air days.

Sinclair Broadcasting has promoted CORTLANDT CUFFEE to be VP and GM for KATU-TV (ABC) in Portland, OR. He’s been running the sales department for KATU and its Univision counterpart. Earlier in his career Cortlandt worked for another Portland station.

There are TWO new General Managers at Nexstar stations.

ANDREW WYATT moves from Nexstar’s WDVM-TV in Hagerstown, MD, to become GM for Nexstar’s first station, WBRE-TV (NBC) in Wilkes-Barre, PA, which the company acquired in 1996. He’s also oversee Mission Broadcasting’s WYOU-TV (CBS) which Nexstar operates under a joint operating agreement.

He’ll be replaced at WDVM by DAVID BANGURA who’s the GM for Nexstar’s Detroit station, WADL-TV.

TWO large market news director changes to tell you about. ONE is most interesting to those of us who follow such things, and ONE involves a network o-and-o ND moving to a GM job.

LaPorte

First, JOHN LaPORTE has resigned as ND for Cox Media Group’s KIRO-TV (CBS) in Seattle after about 14 months there. He’s returning to Milwaukee, where he spent almost nine years as ND at WITI-TV (FOX), to be the Assistant ND at WDJT-TV (Weigel/CBS).

John’s been an ND in several other markets: His Linkedin page has details.

Of note: WDJT has a relatively new GM, ANNE BROWN, who spent many years at WITI, most recently as Marketing Director, where she clearly would have worked with John.

Figueroa

The other move involves MIGDALIA FIGUEROA is leaving NBC’s WTVJ-TV in Miami to be GM for sister NBC property WTMO-TV (Telemundo) in Orlando. More in this news release.

She’s been ND at WTVJ for eight years. She’s also worked in New York and for the Univision station in Miami.

Migdalia is the third network o-and-o ND (two NBC, one CBS) to get a big promotion in the last few weeks.

For the second time in less than a month, a network o-and-o news director is being bumped up to a corporate job at the parent company.

Williams

This time, it’s ANZIO WILLIAMS, who’s been named VP for Diversity for NBC News.  This news release explains his role in this new job.

Anzio’s been the ND for NBC’s WCAU-TV in Philadelphia for more than eight years. He previously spent five years as ND for Hearst’s KCRA-TV (NBC) in Sacramento and two years as ND for another Hearst station, WDSU-TV (also NBC) in New Orleans. He’s also worked in Orlando, Charlotte, Cincinnati, Miami, and Greensboro, NC.

Last month, we told you that JOHNNY GREEN, JR., was being promoted from ND for CBS’s WBZ-TV in Boston to become VP of News Services for CBS News. Johnny and Anzio have been friends since they worked together in Charlotte and later in Philadelphia, where Anzio hired Johnny as Nightside EP.

WWSB-TV, Sarasota, FL (part of the Tampa market)…JEFF SCHLESSER moves within Gray to become ND for this ABC affiliate. Here’s the note from GM JEFF BENNINGHOFF. It’s a return to Tampa for Schlesser, who spent eight years at WTVT-TV. He’s also worked in Milwaukee, Madison, and Eau Claire, WI. At WWSB, he replaces JENNIFER HARDY who left the station in June after four years as ND.

WJZY/WMYT-TV, Charlotte, NC…our Wednesday UPDATE brought news that CASEY CLARK is already on the job as the ND for this FOX/My Network TV) in Charlotte. (Nexstar acquired the station from FOX earlier this year.) Casey most recently was the ND for KCTV (Meredith/CBS) in Kansas City, a job he left in April. He’s also been an ND for WHEC-TV (NBC) in Rochester, NY and has worked at a number of stations. Casey replaces TINA LUQUE who left in June after four years as ND.

WKEF/WRGT-TV, Dayton, OH…BECKY GULDEN has been promoted to news director at this Sinclair Broadcasting (ABC/Fox) operation. Here’s the email from Sinclair VP/News SCOTT LIVINGSTON. Becky’s a 5+ year veteran of the station, first a producer, then EP, and to Assistant ND in June 2018. She’s also worked in Columbus, OH, Charlotte, Knoxville, and Toledo. She replaces KEVIN ROACH who moved to sister Sinclair WJLA-TV (ABC) in Washington as Director of AM Content.

Silberstein

KRIS-TV, Corpus Christi, TX…MARK SILBERSTEIN fills the long vacant opening at the Scripps owned NBC affiliate. His title will be Senior Director of Content (think news director but with a longer title.) Mark has been the news director for Nexstar’s WETM-TV in Elmira, NY for the last two years. He’s previously worked in Boston, Cleveland, Saginaw, Shreveport, Providence, Wichita, and Lansing. At KRIS, he replaces PAUL ALEXANDER who left earlier this year.

STAN STATHAM, a former news director and anchor at KHSL-TV in Chico, CA, died at the age of 81. He later spent two terms in the California Assembly where he supported legislation to divide California into three separate states. His former station has this remembrance.

Longtime Magid executive STEVE RIDGE joins Screen Engine/ASI as Executive Vice President of its newly created TV News Group. Details in this news release. Steve retired from Magid at the end of 2019 after more than 30 years with the company. He’s a former news director in Buffalo (WKBW-TV) and Huntsville, AL (WAAY-TV).

Kachinsky

NOELLE KACHINKSY is leaving her job as the executive producer for Spectrum News in Charlotte to be a Media Specialist working closely with the Centers for Disease Control doing media response to Coronavirus. She’s been at Spectrum for about a year, and has also worked in Norfolk, Macon, Bristol, Spartanburg, Asheville, and Green Bay.

Scripps filled two management jobs this week:

COLLIN VAN BUSKIRK was named Real Time Desk Manager at KRIS-TV (NBC) in Corpus Christi. He’s been working for WGCL-TV in Atlanta on the Assignment Desk.

And DeLAINA CRUTCHER is the new Executive Producer at WLEX-TV (NBC) in Lexington, KY. It’s a return to Lexington for DeLaina, who formerly worked at WKYT-TV there. She most recently has been the morning EP at WBNS-TV in Columbus, OH.

A two-time news director lands a new job in the 21st market.

Clark

CASEY CLARK has been named news director for Nexstar’s WJZY/WMYT-TV (FOX/My Network TV) in Charlotte, NC. (Nexstar acquired the station from FOX earlier this year.)

Casey most recently was ND for Meredith’s KCTV (CBS) in Kansas City, a job he left in April shortly after a new general manager arrived. Casey was there about 18 months, and spent 2 1/2 years as ND for WHEC-TV (NBC) in Rochester, NY.

He’s held a number of management jobs at stations around the country as you’ll learn on his Linkedin page.

Luque

In Charlotte, Casey replaces TINA LUQUE who left the station in June (second verse, same as the first) shortly after a new general manager arrived. Tina was ND here for about 4 years.

Obituaries:

Two men who owned large market TV stations died this past week. There are not many like them left.

Ansin

ED ANSIN, who owned NBC stations in Miami and later Boston, died at the age of 84 last weekend. He lost affiliations at  both stations and bet heavily on news, turning WSVN-TV in Miami into a FOX affiliate with a flashy presentation that was copied often. And when he lost the affiliation for WHDH-TV in Boston, he once again bet heavily on news as an independent station. He worked until the end as he was in the office the Friday before he passed. Kelly

And JON KELLY died this week, also at the age of 84. Along with his brother ROBERT, he owned KCRA-TV (NBC) in Sacramento, long the dominant station there. The brothers also owned KCPQ-TV (FOX) in Seattle before selling both stations. KCRA remembers Jon here, and the Sacramento Bee has a detailed story here.

Fun fact: The longtime anchor at KCRA, owned by the Kelly brothers, was named KELLY BROTHERS. Non believers can read this.

It;’s a return to the Motor City for Kennan, who earlier in his career worked as an associate producer for WDIV-TV in Detroit. He’s currently the Broadcast Manager for Scripps’ WCPO-TV (also ABC) in Cincinnati. Kennan’s worked in a variety of markets as you’ll learn on his Linkedin page.

MIKE RINDO, who worked as a news director in Kalamazoo/Grand Rapids, MI, Rochester, NY, and Eau Claire, WI, is retiring after almost 20 years in his second career. He’s been the assistant chancellor for facilities and university relations at his alma mater, the Univeristy of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, which paid him tribute in this story.

MICHELLE GERMANO has left ABC’s WTVD-TV in Raleigh/Durham after almost five years as news director. Her departure comes shortly after the man she replaced, ROB ELMORE, returned as general manager.

Rob, as you know, moved into 2015 to Los Angeles to be ND for ABC’s KABC-TV.

Michelle spent 12 years as ND for KOLD-TV in Tucson earlier and has also worked in Houston and Corpus Christi, TX.

Ansin

Tonight, after we posted our latest newsletter, we learned of the death of billionaire TV station owner ED ANSIN.

He was 84.

Ansin owned stations in Miami and Boston. Both lost NBC affiliations. He and his team turned Miami (then WCKT-TV into WSVN-TV) and became a FOX affiliate with a presentation style that was widely copied.

When he lost the affiliation at WHDH-TV in Boston, he turned the station into a true independent.

In both case the stations increased their news programming and remain significant factors in their markets.

The Boston Globe has this obituary.

It’s expected his sons will take over the business.

I’m sure the trades will have much more on this story this week.

Obituary:

Acklen

DAN ACKLEN, who had been a news director in Seattle, Cleveland, Portland, OR, and Medford, OR, died April 13 of complications of lymphoma, lupus and deep vein thrombosis. He was 69. Dan was well respected by his employees who called him a gentleman who treated staff with respect and kindness.

I last spoke with Dan earlier this year when he called to check in. He maintained a sense of humor through his illnesses, as proven in this 2017 email to me:

As for me, I am doing the best I can. I still follow my Oregon Ducks and have my tickets for the next FB season (BTW – Go Ducks! Beat Michigan!). However, I face some challenges. I have deep vein thrombosis, lupus, and lymphoma. As for my health issues, it’s a classic case: I quit drinking and smoking and then my body went to hell…and my maladies are not generally associated with those bad habits.

My rheumatologist says the lupus will get me before the lymphoma will…reassuring, isn’t it? I still feel good, walk every other day and enjoy life (the old line about stopping to smell the roses applies to me!).

DERIK LATTIG joins Spectrum News in Dallas as Planning Manager for its new operation there, scheduled to launch September 1st. He spent almost 13 years as a regional news producer for CBS Newspath in Dallas, and has worked for stations across Texas and in Albuquerque, NM.

JENNIFER RIEFFER, who started as a traffic assistant at WDKY-TV in Lexington, KY, in 1995 and rose to General Manager there in 2018, has been promoted. She’s the new GM for Sinclair’s WSMH-TV (FOX) in Flint, MI. She’ll also oversee services provided by Sinclair to WEYI-TV (NBC) in Flint. More details here.

SEAN TRCALEK moves across town to become General Manager for Scripps’ KATC-TV (ABC) in Lafayette, LA. He’s been the GM for KADN-TV in Lafayette since February, 2017. It’s a return to KATC for Sean who was national sales manager there from 1989-1995. Scripps issued this news release.
