Patti M.

I’m sorry to share with you that veteran news director PATTI McGETTIGAN died this afternoon in Memphis, just two months after she took a medical retirement from WHBQ-TV, the Cox owned FOX affiliate there.

She was 53.

Patti was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005. She also survived a heart attack last fall.

She spent four years as ND in Memphis, and also worked as an ND at WISH-TV in Indianapolis and WOOD-TV in Grand Rapids, MI. Patti also worked in Columbus, OH, and Pittsburgh. Her Linkedin bio has more.

Service are pending, likely to be held in her home state of Michigan.

She is survived by a daughter, Mollie, who is 20, and a son, William, who is 18.

We’ll end with pictures from happier times…Patti and her daughter at a 2012 behind the scenes tour of the Indianapolis Zoo.

Sorry to report tonight the passing of former KCEN-TV (Temple, TX) News Director and Anchor TONY HENNES. 

If the name sounds familiar, it’s because we just told you two weeks ago that he was running for Temple City Council.

But he died yesterday at the age of 72 of an apparent heart attack. More details in this story from The Temple Daily Telegram.

Tony went to work for the city of Temple in 1988 to manage its downtown development efforts.

Cheryl most recently was the ND for KING/KONG-TV (Tegna) in Seattle. She’s been a news director in North Carolina, spent eleven years at in Los Angeles as an EP, and has also worked in Las Vegas and Greenville, NC. At WJLA, Cheryl replaces MITCH JACOB who left in November after four years as ND.

New News Director Openings:

KSEE/KGPE-TV, Fresno, CA…CHAD McCOLLUM is leaving this Nexstar Media Group owned NBC/CBS duopoly after six years as ND (and 12 at the stations) to take a job in Clovis, CA, where he lives with his family. He’ll start in March as the Public Affairs and Information Supervisor for the city. A native of San Diego, Chad’s career has been entirely in The Golden State, as he’s worked in San Luis Obispo, San Diego, and Los Angeles.

KARK-TV, Little Rock, AR…another Nexstar station is losing its news director, but he’s staying within the company as AUSTIN KELLERMAN has been promoted to Director of Digital Content for Nexstar. He’s been ND here for seven years, was an ND in Abilene, TX before that, and has worked in Dallas and Shreveport.

KARA McNEELY returns to Scripps as GM of the company’s Tucson station, KGUN-TV. She most recently has been VP of brand strategy, audience development and programming for KABC-TV in Los Angeles. But earlier in her career she was the marketing director for Scripps’ WCPO-TV in Cincinnati. She’s also worked for another Cincinnati station, and in Miami and Indianapolis.

Media Moves reports that KXTX-TV (Telemundo/Dallas) General Manager JOHN TREVINO has left the company after his position was eliminated. TOM EHLMANN, GM of sister NBC owned station KXAS-TV will oversee both properties.

News from another NBC owned property: CHRIS WAYLAND has been named Vice President/Station Manager of Boston’s NBC operations, WNEU-TV (NBC), WNEU-TV (Telemundo) and NECN, the 24 hour cable news channel. The world’s (okay, at least in our world) worst kept secret is now official.

Carson

CHERYL CARSON will start February 18th as news director for Sinclair Broadcasting’s WJLA-TV (ABC) in Washington, DC. She spent the last three years as ND for KING/KONG-TV (Tegna/NBC/Independent) and worked there for six.  More on her Linkedin page.

She earlier was a news director in North Carolina, spent eleven years at KTTV (Fox) in Los Angeles as an EP, and has also worked in Las Vegas and Greenville, NC.

At WJLA, she replaces MITCH JACOB who left in November after four years as ND. In his resignation note to the staff, he expressed an interest in moving away from daily news for a while and to care for his ailing mother.

But I digress. THREE new news directors named this week, all first timer NDs who were either promoted within their current company or returning to a former station. That leaves, by my count, 29 stations looking for a new leader.

There are THREE obituaries this week, including a tragic story from Texas of a young newscast director who died while preparing that morning’s newscast.

At WPBF, Stephanie replaces TRAVIS SHERWIN who left in November to become EP of Hearst’s Washington based investigative unit after 2 years as ND here.

Sad news this week from KVII-TV in Amarillo (the ABC affiliate there) where the station’s morning newscast director, MALCOLM MONTGOMERY died Tuesday morning. He was 27 and apparently collapsed while preparing for that day’s morning newscast, which the station canceled. Click here to see how KVII reported his passing.

STEVEN MEUCHE, who spent a long career at Michigan State University’s public stations WKAR-TV and radio, died late last month at the age of 74. He first joined WKAR as a producer and director and later served as GM for 15 years. He also held national roles on the NPR board where he helped discover a huge deficit.

ALVIN SNYDER died Monday at the age of 82. You may not know the name but he worked for CBS, WMAQ-TV in Chicago, worked in the Nixon White House and held several other public services roles….all outlined in this obituary.

WMAQ-TV in Chicago filled its long vacant Managing Editor position by hiring LAUREN STAUFFER. VP/News FRANK WHITTAKER shared the news with the staff via this email. She most recently was an EP for WJLA-TV in Washington, DC…she first joined the station as a producer in 2013. Lauren earlier worked in Nashville and Sioux City, IA. She’s a Chicago native who still has family in the area.

A number of management changes at Meredith’s WGCL-TV (CBS) in Atlanta.

Assistant News Director RUDY MURRIETA is leaving (after today’s football game) to join his wife in Florida, where she’s taken a new job.

ANDRÉS CHAPARRO has left Telemundo’s Denver station, KDEN-TV, after nine years at the station. He was promoted to general manager in 2015.

Greetings:

We start with an apology.

Due to a production error, earlier this week a draft of an UPDATE was accidentally posted on our website, though not emailed. It involved a hire at at a large market station that I am told by company officials has not happened….at least not yet. Unfortunately it was picked up by other sites.

Since it’s our long standing goal to report only facts, (unusual on the web, I know) we removed that post and will obviously not include the information in this week’s edition.

There is ONE new news director this week…who’s also his station’s chief meteorologist. And we removed another listing for reasons explained below.

There are TWO obituaries, one for a former network and local anchor turned educator, and the other for a longtime radio news director who served on the RTDNA board…and whose station won FOUR Peabody Awards during his tenure.

He’ll be busy, as he will remain the station’s chief meteorologist. Matt’s been the assistant news director for the past five years. He’s a 13 year veteran of the station…beginning as a radio news reporter and anchor. More here.

Matt replaces our old friend JEFF KLOTZMAN. The station, in this post, reported that Jeff has ‘retired’ but also announced that he was joining the Lubbock school district as the new executive director of communications and community relations. Jeff was the first ND here and also anchored the late news. He had earlier been an ND for another Amarillo station and worked in Madison, Austin, TX, San Diego and Phoenix.

One update: we’re removing KKTV in Colorado Springs from our list of open ND jobs. We first posted that last July when LIZ HALTIWANGER was promoted to GM after ten years as ND and 15 at the station. Liz will hold both the ND and GM positions for this Gray owned CBS affiliate.

Obituaries:

Bell

Former ABC anchor STEVE BELL…who spent more than 15 years on the faculty of Ball St. University…died Friday, January 25th at the age of 83. While covering the Vietnam War, he was captured by the Viet Cong. In 1975, he was part of the first team as Good Morning America debuted on ABC. He later left to anchor at Philadelphia’s KYW-TV. Steve began in TV in Omaha, went to WNEW-AM radio in New York City before joining ABC Radio and then the TV side of ABC.

Rublein

BRIAN RUBLEIN, who spent more than 20 years as news director for Louisville’s WHAS-AM radio, died earlier this month. I believe he was around 80 years old, though this obituary fails to mention his age. During his leadership of WHAS, the station was honored with FOUR Peabody Awards. He also served on the (then) RTNDA Board of Directors. After leaving radio, Brian worked in media relations and served 18 years on the City Council of Anchorage, KY.

CHRIS TURNER…whose last appearance in these pages came in November when he left his job as ND for WJTV and WHLT-TV (Jackson/Hattiesburg, MS) has landed. He’s the new director of the Public Affairs Division for the Mississippi Department of Transportation. In addition to WJTV/WHLT-TV, he served as a news director in Cheyenne, WY, and spent 21 years working for CNN in a variety of roles.

Genty

Our best wishes to NICK GENTY, news director of KATV in Little Rock, who has gone public with his battle with throat cancer. Nick never smoked but still developed the disease. More in this story. He’s a longtime veteran of the Little Rock Market, having spent more than 20 years at another station before moving to KATV.

TONY HENNES, a former news director and anchor for KCEN-TV in Temple, TX…is now running for the Temple City Council. He’s been working for the city since leaving television in 1998.

Rodriguez

Let’s end this section on a lighter note. MOANA RODRIGUEZ, the news director for the Univision station in San Antonio, has an unusual way to de-stress. It’s earned her the nickname of “The Dancing Jefa” Someone captured it on video.

Another very busy week for our report.

FIVE new news director openings, though TWO were created by incumbents taking general manager jobs. And we have TWO new newly named news directors.

KMTV, Omaha, NE…we told you last week that this Scripps/CBS opening would soon be filled… and….it is…by GEOFF ROTH. By my count this is Geoff’s eighth news director’s job. He’s leaving KREX-TV (Nexstar/CBS) after about 18 months. At KMTV, Geoff replaces JOE SPADEA who left the station in November as is now ND for Nexstar’s WVLA/WGMB-TV in Baton Rouge, LA.

Stewart

WEVV-TV, Evansville, IN…WARREN STEWART returns to his home region as the next news director for this CBS/FOX operation owned by Bayou Broadcasting. Here’s the news release. Warren tells me his mother is battling some health issues so it’s the right time to come home. He most recently was ND for KJRH-TV in Tulsa…he left in September after about 18 months. Warren’s also worked in Cleveland, Orlando, and New Orleans.

Korff

The man he replaces at WEVV, WARREN KORFF, landed quickly. He left WEVV in December but starts tomorrow as the Assignment Manager at WEHT/WTVW-TV, also in Evansville. Warren worked at WEHT/WTVW until three years ago when he left to re-start the news operation at WEVV.

KING/KONG-TV, Seattle, WA…our only UPDATE of the past week brought news of CHERYL CARSON’s departure from this Tegna owned NBC and Independent duopoly after almost three years as ND and six at the station. WHNT-TV, Huntsville, AL…we told you in our Monday update of DENISE VICKERS departure from this Tribune owned (for now) CBS affiliate for a (at that point unnamed) GM job that turned out to be at WFXG-TV in Augusta, GA, a Lockwood Broadcasting owned FOX affiliate. She found a unique way to announce the new gig. Denise joined WHNT in 2006, earlier had been a news director at stations in Charleston, SC, Montgomery, AL, and Boise, ID.

WGME-TV, Portland, ME…KATHY REYNOLDS is leaving this Sinclair owned CBS affiliate to become Story Telling Team Leader, in charge of MSJs and anchors, at Tegna’s WUSA-TV (CBS) in Washington, DC. She’s been here almost six years, and spent about two years as an ND at WEYI-TV in Flint/Saginaw, MI. Kathy’s worked in Wausaw, WI, and as a reporter in Springfield, MA, Grand Rapids, MI, Burlington, Fargo, and Elmira, NY.

Bergen

KBMT-TV, Beaumont, TX…PAUL BERGEN is moving up to become GM for this Tegna owned ABC/NBC operation. He’s been ND there for more than ten years. Paul had been ND for KBTV in Beaumont until March 2008, when he left for a very brief stint as ND for KTAL-TV in Shreveport. He also worked as an ND in Butte, MT, and served as the state Capitol Correspondent for five Montana TV stations. Paul began his career at the Billings Gazette.

Obituaries:

Gaita

Our sympathy to the staff at WFXT-TV in Boston on the death of the station’s EP, DEB GAITA. She died this week at the age of 45 after fighting cancer. Deb worked for another Boston station, and in Pittsburgh, Greensboro, and Macon, GA. More about her life, family, and career in this obituary.

BOB KLINGLE, a former general manager for stations in Louisville and Ft. Wayne, died last Monday. He was 62 and lost a battle with prostate cancer. He also worked in sales for CBS owned stations in New York and Chicago. One of his former stations, WHAS-TV, posted this nice obituary on its website.

And former Eureka, CA, News Director (KVIQ-TV) and General Manger (KIEM-TV) J. WARREN HOCKADAY died last Sunday. He was 70 and also spent 14 years as President and CEO of the Eureka Chamber of Commerce.

BRIAN LUHN has left KRIV-TV, the FOX o-and-o in Houston, to take a job out of TV. Brian tells me it’s with a media company that works with big companies to help them tell their stories to their customers. Brian sent this note to his KRIV colleagues. He’s a former ND at WCBD-TV in Charleston and has worked in Asheville, NC, Seattle, Atlanta, Denver, Louisville, Ft. Myers, and Sherman, TX.

KJRH-TV in Tulsa has promoted GARRETT WEINDORF to Assistant News Director. Garrett was the EP of Special Projects at the station. He’s also worked at another Tulsa station.

DAVE SWITZER joins WeatherMetrics as Director of Marketing. He’s worked at a number of local television stations and as Magid, as you’ll learn in this news release.

As noted above, PAUL BERGEN has been upped from ND to GM of Tegna’s KBMT-TV in Beaumont, TX. His was one of TWO Texas GM announcements from Tegna…the other also involved a news manager, as TIM THOMAS was promoted to GM at KWES-TV in Midland, TX, where he was news operations manager. And…for those of you with short memories…we reported above that DENISE VICKERS is the new GM of Lockwood’s WFXG-TV in Augusta, GA. She had been ND for WHNT-TV in Huntsville.
