Another newsman moves to the GM’s office, and he’s got a big job ahead of him.

BILL SIEGEL, who’s spent the last four years as senior director of content strategy for Scripps, is off to South Florida as General Manager for the company’s WSFL-TV in Miami-Fort Lauderdale. He’ll be hiring a news director and a complete staff to launch news on that CW affiliate.

That probably means Bill has a lot of new friends this afternoon. 🙂

Here’s the news release with all the details.

Bill’s a former ND for WWL-TV in New Orleans, and held news management positions in St. Louis, Milwaukee, and San Antonio, and worked as a producer in Palm Springs.

We’ll see you this weekend with our full newsletter.

Greetings:

Another busy week, with THREE new openings and THREE newly named news directors, all of whom have been NDs before.

30. That’s the number of open ND jobs on our list. THREE of those jobs are advertised below, among our FIVE paid help wanted ads.

Speaking of ads, we welcome The Carole Kneeland Project and Stringr! back as advertisers.

TWO men who served as news directors and anchors in their careers have passed this month. Both had interesting other carers outside of our business. We have their obituaries below.

In Names in the News…a fun look from KABC-TV on its 70th anniversary. And a former ND surfaces as an Assistant ND in Pittsburgh.

All that…and much more…below.

Kneeland Logo

Do you know of someone who deserves the gift of Kneeland?
(Hint: it might be you.)

The Kneeland Project is accepting applications now for their March 4-7, 2020 session in Austin, Texas. Applications are due Friday January 10, 2020 and are available here.

Thanks to Kneeland’s generous funders, this opportunity is nearly free for selected news managers. The Kneeland Project pays for all tuition costs as well as hotel and several meals. Participants cover only their transportation and a few meals — Kneeland takes care of the rest.

In a recent survey of Kneeland Fellows, 100% reported they still regularly use lessons learned at Kneeland, believe that time spent at Kneeland improved their career and said they have recommended Kneeland to a friend or colleague.

The Kneeland Project is an intensive program unlike any other. It’s practical. It’s highly interactive. It produces long-lasting results.

Click here for more information and to apply. Only 20 journalists will be selected for this program. Start 2020 right and apply today!

December 8, 2019

Thursday, December 12, 2019 UPDATE:

Greetings:

We always delight in reporting the ascension of a news director to a general manager’s job, and that’s the case today.

Chapuis

Chapuis

ED CHAPUIS, a veteran ND, is being promoted within Scripps to become GM for KSBY-TV, the company’s NBC affiliate in San Luis Obispo, CA. Details in this news release.

Ed already speaks ‘Californian’, as his last FOUR news director jobs have been in The Golden State (not bad for a Chicago native). That includes his current gig at Scripps’ KGTV in San Diego, a job he’s held since September, 2017.

Before that, he ran newsrooms in Oakland/San Francisco and at two stations in Sacramento. He’s also been the ND for KTNV in Las Vegas, now owned by Scripps (though it wasn’t when he was there.)

He began his TV career at Chicago’s WMAQ-TV as a researcher and on the assignment desk.

At KSBY, he replaces another former ND turned GM, KATHLEEN CHOAL, who was promoted to be GM for Scripps’ KSHB-TV (NBC) in Kansas City.

Much more in our full newsletter later this weekend.

Wednesday, December 11, 2019 UPDATE:

Sinclair LogoSinclair Broadcasting will discontinue its ‘must-run’ political commentaries done by BORIS EPSHTEYN and AMESHIA CROSS. According to this story from NBC News, the company says it’s part of a move away from political commentary in favor of investigative journalism.

duPont LogoAnd THREE local stations won FOUR Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Awards today.

Congratulations to KARE-TV (Tegna/NBC) in Minneapolis which won TWO, and to WSOC-TV (Cox/ABC) in Charlotte and WKBW-TV (Scripps/ABC) in Buffalo.

Details on the efforts that won these awards, as well as the entire list of winners, can be found here.

D'Ascenzo

D’Ascenzo

We normally limit our coverage to news about GMs and news managers, but the sad news Saturday about the sudden passing of longtime WFSB-TV (Hartford, CT) anchor DENISE D’ASCENZO merited a mention. She died at her home at 61, following a 30+ year career at this Meredith owned CBS affiliate. She also worked in Cleveland and St. Louis. Our sympathy to her family and WFSB’s GM DANA NEVES, ND KEITH CONNORS and the rest of the staff.

McMullin

McMullin

A long ago Illinois news director died last October. ROBERT DON McMULLIN was 89. This obituary is pretty brief, but the man who succeeded him at WCIA-TV in Champaign, PAUL DAVIS provided a little more background via email:

He was born in Calumet City. His wife Marian and two daughters and grand kids survive. Best I cam recall, Rick.

Thanks, Paul.

December 1, 2019

Saturday, December 7, 2019 UPDATE:

THREE top 30 market news director departures…and a top 35 ND addition…in this brief UPDATE.

Waggoner

Waggoner

The newest happened today as MATT WAGGONER was named ND for Scripps’ KSHB-TV (NBC) in Kansas City. That means he’s leaving Nexstar’s WTTV/WXIN-TV (CBS/FOX) after just one year as news director and shortly after the ownership change from Tribune to Nexstar. Here’s the memo from KSHB General Manager KATHLEEN CHOAL.

Parcell

Parcell

Earlier this week it was announced that MATT PARCELL is retiring after 7+ years as ND for WFTV in Orlando. That ABC affiliate is part of the pending Cox-Apollo deal. Orlando Sentinel TV writer HAL BOEDEKER has more. Matt”s been the ND there since 2012 and has worked at the station since 1997.

Finally, MIKE TOMKO is leaving Sinclair’s WBFF-TV in Baltimore at the end of the year for a job outside of television. He’s been the ND there since 2012, and first joined that FOX affiliate in 2002 as an EP. (For a one time MMJ, he appears to be camera-shy: I could not find a photo.) 🙂

We’ll have more on those changes and lots of other news in our full newsletter later this weekend.

regards,

gevers

Greetings:

I hope your Thanksgiving was relaxing and all you hoped it to be.

It was a good week for THREE people named to new ND jobs this week. ALL of them were promoted at their current stations. And we have just ONE new opening, bringing our list of open ND jobs to 25.

ONE of those openings is among our TWO paid help wanted ads this week.

There are TWO obituaries, one for a long ago South Carolina news director and anchor, and we have more details on the death of a longtime big market general manager.

Speaking of general managers, we’ll tell you about a former ND and news executive who is leaving her job as a GM in North Carolina. And we have TWO items in Names in the News, both involving former news directors.

Have a great week.

JON SMALL will replace him as ND, and CATHERINE PEGRAM will replace him as the Assistant ND. Both Jon and Catherine will continue their anchor roles. The full story, with more background on Morris’ career, is here.

New News Director Openings:

Broadway

Broadway

KIDY/KXVA-TV, San Angelo/Abilene, TX…these Tegna owned stations have posted a job for news director. Both stations are FOX affiliates. Greetings:

Two news manager promotions at a central Ohio station to share.

Nickels

Nickels

At Tegna’s WBNS-TV (CBS) in Columbus, JENNIFER NICKELS has been promoted to news director. A Columbus native, Jen has been the Assistant ND there since September 2016 and served as the interim ND since STEVE KOLES left in March after eight months. Also at WBNS, TED ACHLADIS has been named Director of Digital Content, He’s been working at WFXT-TV (FOX) in Boston, but has spent much of his career in Ohio, working at three stations in Cleveland and in Youngstown, He’s also worked in New York and Syracuse, where he began his career as a photographer, reporter and sports anchor.

Greetings:

Considering there’s still a few days left in the rating book, there’s a lot of activity this week.

Like FOUR new news directors, and THREE new ND openings.

That means our list of open ND jobs moves to 26. And I anticipate at least ONE new ND job to be filled this week.

There are THREE paid help wanted ads, including ONE for one of those open ND jobs, another for an EP job at a large market investigative unit, and ONE for an Assistant ND job at an Iowa station.

We have an very brief obituary for a former Houston and Sacramento GM. In Names in the News, a promotion to a corporate job at Nexstar, and we’ll tell you about a scholarship fund in honor of a beloved Florida anchor.

We’re getting a new GM in Indianapolis and a quick promotion in Boston for an NBC exec.

All that and more below.

Newly Named News Directors:

Hill-Rodriguez

Hill-Rodriguez

KTTV/KCOP-TV, Los Angeles, CA…sometimes things just work out, as they did for ERICA-HILL RODRIGUEZ. She resigned as ND for KCPQ-TV in Seattle to move (without a job) to Los Angeles to be closer to her wife. And this week she became the new ND for the FOX-owned duopoly. Erica spent 12 years in her second stint at KCPQ, rejoining the station as managing editor, then AND, before being named ND in 2013. She’s also worked in Chicago and Boise. KCPQ posted this article on leadership lessons they learned from her…and that you could, too. At KTTV, she replaces KRIS KNUTSEN (a 30 year veteran of the market) who left in August after three years as ND.

McNamara

McNamara

WDAF-TV, Kansas City, MO…our UPDATE Tuesday told you that SEAN McNAMARA would be the next ND for this Nexstar FOX affiliate. Sean’s been the Assistant ND for Graham Media’s WKMG-TV (CBS) in Orlando since 2011. He’s been an ND three times before and began his career in newspapers.

Because we are ON YOUR SIDE and/or LOOKING OUT FOR YOU and/or COVERAGE YOU CAN COUNT ON (I’ll stop now), we have thoughtfully combined the memos from WDAF GM TRACY BROGDEN-MILLER and the memo from ALLISON McGINLEY, the ND at WKMG into one easy to click link. Sean replaces DANA McDANIEL who left this summer to become ND for KFMB-TV in San Diego.

Lee

Lee

WFRV-TV, Green Bay, WI…that Tuesday UPDATE also reported that DAVID LEE would be the new ND for this Nexstar owned CBS affiliate. David most recently was the news director for WTXL-TV in Tallahassee, FL, where he worked for THREE owners in just 5 1/2 years at that ABC affiliate. David began his career on-air before moving to management. He replaces KELLY PATTERSON who stepped down in September for family reasons after nine months as ND. She had also been an EP there.

Sherer

Sherer

WWAY-TV, Wilmington, NC…the last item in Tuesday’s UPDATE acknowledged that we were late in telling you that BRANDON SHERER has been the ND here since October. WWAY is an ABC/CBS/CW operation owned by Morris Multimedia. Brandon most recently was the ND for Spectrum Central North Carolina, spent 13 years as the Assistant ND for WTVD-TV in Raleigh and was once an ND in Cape Girardeau, MO. At WWAY, he replaces KEVIN WUZZARDO who is now Managing Editor for WHBQ-TV in Memphis.

New News Director Openings:

Haggar

Haggar

KLKN-TV, Lincoln, NE…MARK HAGGAR has left this Standard Media owned ABC affiliate after a remarkable 22 year run as news director. Standard Media acquired the station this summer and installed a new GM, which brings to mind this wise counsel shared by a loyal reader a few weeks ago:

30 days hath September, April, and any sitting ND who gets a new GM.

Sadiwskyj

Sadiwskyj

WTVY-TV, Dothan, AL…LENA SADIWSKYJ has left this Gray TV owned CBS affiliate as her two year contract expired. She told me she’s hoping to announce her next move soon. Lena also taught at the University of Missouri School of Journalism. Her complete background is on her Linkedin page.
