October 21, 2018

Greetings:

Remember how slow our reports have been the last few weeks.

Not this week!

Not with FOUR new news directors (all in top 35 markets), and THREE new ND openings, TWO in top 30 markets. One of those ND openings is at a top ten network o-and-o, and the opening was created because the incumber is off to be a GM.

Our list of open ND positions eases down slightly to 29.

ONE of those openings is featured in this week’s only Paid Help Wanted ad.

TWO obituaries this week, one of a veteran news director and one of a founder of NABJ.

And we have many items in Names in the News, including a lengthy New Yorker Magazine look at Sinclair Broadcasting.

Read on for more!

Newly Named News Directors:

Sepulveda

Sepulveda

WVEA/WVEN-TV, Tampa and Orlando, FL…ÁNGEL SEPÚLVEDA returns to Entravision as news director for its stations in Tampa and Orlando. He’ll be based in Orlando but travel to Tampa every week. Angel once worked in Orlando as a producer and has consulted for Telemundo. Media Moves has the full story here.

Hostetter

Hostetter

KDKA-TV, Pittsburgh, PA…KATHY HOSTETTER will be the next ND for this CBS o-and-o. She’s been the ND at WTHR-TV in Indianapolis for the past 5 1/2 years. Kathy told me her husband BEN, a Pennylsvania native, is taking a new job there. And she knows KDKA GM JAY HOWELL from when both worked for LIN Media. Kathy’s been an ND in Louisville, Norfolk and Ft. Wayne, and has worked in San Jose/San Francisco and Grand Rapids, MI. At KDKA, she replaces ANNE LINABERGER whose departure in August came after 8 years as ND and 19 at the station.

Carter

Carter

WTNH-TV, New Haven/Hartford, CT…it appears you can go home again…and again…as CHUCK CARTER gets the big office in his third time at this Nexstar owned ABC affiliate. Here’s the news release. The move reunites him with GM RICH GRAZIANO: they’ve worked together at another Hartford station and in New York. Chuck was the Assistant ND here until June, when he left for the EP job at WTXF-TV in Philadelphia, and he’d been a producer at WTNH earlier in his career. Chuck replaces KEITH CONNORS who left in July to become ND for cross-town rival WFSB-TV.

Clark

Clark

KCTV, Kansas City, MO…another ND hire with the initials CC (why yes, you’re right, we ARE scrambling for unusual angles) as CASEY CLARK has been named ND for this Meredith owned CBS affiliate. KCTV GM CHUCK PODUSKA told the staff via email. Casey’s been the ND for Hubbard’s WHEC-TV in Rochester for the past 3 1/2 years, and has worked in markets all over the country. Casey replaces SCOTT LEVY who left in August after two years as ND.

New News Director Openings:

McClain

McClain

WAGA-TV, Atlanta, GA…we’re always pleased to report the promotion of a news director to general manager, and such is the case as MIKE McCLAIN is being promoted to GM for sister FOX o-and-o WJZY/WMYT-TV in Charlotte. He’s been ND at WAGA for eight years, earlier served as ND for FOX owned stations in Tampa and Birmingham, and began his career as a news photographer.

WTHR-TV, Indianapolis, IN…we told you above that KATHY HOSTETTER is leaving this Dispatch owned NBC affiliate after 5 1/2 years to become ND for KDKA-TV in Pittsburgh.

WHEC-TV, Rochester, NY…and we also told you above that CASEY CLARK will leave to become the next ND for KCTV in Kansas City. Casey was ND for this Hubbard station for more than three years.

Names in the News (and other items):

The New Yorker offers a lengthy look at what it calls the growth of Sinclair Broadcasting’s conservative media empire. It suggests the company has concentrated on smaller markets where its stations can have a big influence.

Houston

Houston

Old friend CARLTON HOUSTON will be leaving his gig as Assistant News Director for Tegna’s WUSA-TV at the end of the November book. Carlton told me he’s looking for a great new challenge. October 14, 2018

Friday, October 19, 2018 UPDATE:

There’s a second news director opening in Indianapolis to report.

Hostetter

Hostetter

KATHY HOSTETTER, who’s been the ND for Dispatch’s WTHR-TV, is leaving that NBC affiliate to become ND for KDKA-TV in Pittsburgh, the CBS o-and-o in the Steel City.

Kathy’s been ND here for about 5 1/2 years, coming from WAVE-TV in Louisville. She’s also been an ND in Norfolk and Ft. Wayne, and has worked in San Jose/San Francisco and Grand Rapids, MI.

Her departure creates the second ND opening in the market, as KERRI CAVANAUGH left WTTV-WXIN-TV (Tribune’s CBS/FOX duopoly) last week for a consulting job with Magid.

I hope to have more on this story in our full newsletter later this weekend.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Wednesday, October 17, 2018 UPDATE:

Greetings:

There’s a new news director in a top 35 market.

Clark

  Clark

CASEY CLARK will move west to become the ND for Meredith’s KCTV in Kansas City. That’s the CBS affiliate there.  Here’s the note to the staff from GM CHUCK PODUSKA.

Casey has spent the last 2+ years as ND for Hubbard’s WHEC-TV (NBC) in Rochester, NY. His resume is long and varied, and includes major market stops in Philadelphia, and Baltimore among others. It’s all on his Linkedin page.

At KCTV, he replaces SCOTT LEVY who left the station in August after two years as ND.

As you know, it’s been a busy week. We’ll recap it all (and more) in our full newsletter this weekend.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Tuesday, October 16, 2018 UPDATE #2:

A rare second UPDATE in less than an hour brings news of the promotion of a longtime news director to a general manager’s job, always something we like to see in this corner.

McClain

McClain

MIKE McCLAIN, who’s been the ND for FOX’s WAGA-TV in Atlanta for eight years has been named GM of the company’s WJZY-WMYT-TV in Charlotte.   Full details in this news release.

Mike earlier spent two years as ND for FOX’s WTVT-TV in Tampa and six years as ND for another FOX owned station, WBRC-TV in Birmingham.

That’s where he began his career as a news photographer before working his way up the ranks.

He replaces KIERAN CLARKE who has left the station.

Congrats, Mike!

More in our full newsletter later this weekend.

Tuesday, October 16, 2018 UPDATE:

Greetings:

Two items, including an obituary for a longtime news director, in today’s UPDATE.

Carter

Carter

CHUCK CARTER returns to WTNH-TV in New Haven/Hartford (Nexstar/ABC) as ND. It’s his third tour of duty at the station. He’d been the Assistant ND at WTNH until June, when he returned to Philadelphia as Executive Producer for Fox’s WTXF-TV. The move reunites him with GM RICH GRAZIANO. They’ve worked together at both WTIC-TV in Hartford and WPIX-TV in New York.

Here’s the news release.

Chuck’s complete work history is on his Linkedin page. He replaces KEITH CONNORS who left in July to become ND for WFSB-TV, the Meredith owned CBS affiliate in Hartford.

Bradley

Bradley

And details are sketchy at this writing, but I’m sorry to report the death this morning of retired news director DON BRADLEY (real name: DON BURIAN). Don’s a former news director in Hartford, Ft. Wayne, Waco, and Victoria, TX, and worked in Memphis, St. Louis, and Louisville.

With I get more information, I will add it here and include it in the full newsletter this weekend.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Greetings:

It’s another week of relatively few changes among the news director ranks.

We have just TWO newly named NDs…and for one, it’s a rare instance where she is replacing…drum roll please…herself!

No new openings as best as I know, so our list of open ND positions drops to 30.

We do have a few interesting items in Names in the News, a late obituary for a former Denver, Hartford, and Indianapolis GM, and the retirement of a former ND who’s been anchor for one Wisconsin station for more than 24 years.

All that and more…below.

Newly Named News Directors:

Lyons

Lyons

WGN-TV, Chicago, IL…we told you on Tuesday that JENNIFER LYONS was returning to this Tribune owned station, replacing herself. Jennifer left in August for a job outside of television, but decided her heart was in news. Chicago media writer ROBERT FEDER has the full story, including the memo GM PAUL RENNIE sent to his staff.

Editor’s note: When we first reported this, I commented that it had happened before but couldn’t remember a specific incident. A loyal reader reminded me that BRAD REMINGTON left KTVI-TV in St. Louis for the ND job at KATU-TV in Portland, OR, in 2001 before returning to KTVI…thus replacing himself…four days later.

Spectrum News Wisconsin, Milwaukee, WI…DIANE IRVING will be the first news director for this startup cable news operation. She’s spent the last 23 years working for Milwaukee’s WTMJ-TV in a variety of roles, including Assistant News Director, and, most recently, Broadcast Director.

Obituary:

Bacon

Bacon

We’re late in reporting the death last March of ROD BACON, who served as GM of stations in Denver, New Haven and Indianapolis. He also worked in many other markets in a variety of jobs, as you’ll learn in this detailed obituary.

Also, in reporting the death of BLAKE KELLOGG last week, we erred in reporting the station for which he had been an ND and anchor. It was WKOW-TV in Madison, WI, not WISC-TV. Apologies.

Names in the News (and other items):

She’s worked for CBS News, CNN, WTHR-TV in Indianapolis as well at two Indianapolis newspapers, primarily as an investigative producer and reporter. They will develop the IU Media School’s investigative reporting curriculum.

Milbourn

General Manager News and Notes:

October 7, 2018

Tuesday, October 9, 2018 UPDATE:

Greetings:

I’m sure this has happened before, but I can’t remember an exact instance to share with you.

The new news director at Chicago’s WGN-TV is JENNIFER LYONS, who replaces…herself as news director for this Tribune owned station.

That’s right…Jennifer, who left her job in August after four years as ND and 25 at the station…will return on Thursday. The details are in this story by Chicago media writer ROBERT FEDER. GM PAUL RENNIE‘s note to the staff is included.

Jennifer left to become VP/Communications and External Relations for Catholic Extension, which supports and strengthens poor mission dioceses nationwide. Feder quotes her as saying she will continue to support the organization’s mission, but she quickly knew her heart was in news.

She’s also worked in Des Moines and Davenport, IA.

We’ll have more on this and all the week’s new in our full newsletter this weekend.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Greetings:

It’s an unfortunate week when we have more obituaries (FIVE) than news director movements (ONE).

That one change is a new news director in Las Vegas, and causes our list of open ND jobs to drop to 31. And we have a new paid ad for ONE of those jobs.

Those five obituaries are below, and included a current Missouri assignment editor, three retired news people, two of them former news directors, and the wife of a longtime news director.

There are TWO items about General Managers, one about a San Francisco GM who’s retiring and the other one getting a promotion.

And our only item in Names in the News involves a former ND and GM who’s moving to print.

All those stories and more below!

New News Director Openings:

There are no new openings this week (to my knowledge) but we do have a new Paid Help Wanted ad for the ND job at WTTV/WXIN-TV here in Indianapolis. That’s just below.

September 30, 2018

Greetings:

Enjoyed seeing many old friends and meeting a few new ones in Baltimore this week. Sorry the weather wasn’t better, but the crab cakes were good.

As you might expect, a slow week for news director and news manager changes. There are TWO new ND openings…and just ONE new news director named. The number of open ND jobs is 32. And we have a paid ad for ONE of those jobs.

TWO obituaries this week, one for a ground breaking Oklahoma newswoman.

TWO new GMs as well, and, in Names in the News, a new chair for RTDNA who is also ground breaking and results of the election for the Board of Directors. And details about a new job for a Los Angeles ND (who keeps his old one, too) and more.

Finally, a slight turn from our normal content.

Mittermeier

Russ M.

1,300 people turned out in Indianapolis Saturday night to honor RUSSELL MITTEMEIER, the winner of the 2018 Indianapolis Prize, the world’s leading award for animal conservation. (Full disclosure: my wife, KAREN BURNS, is the executive director.) Details about Russ and the prize (which includes a $250,000 unrestricted award) can be found here.

And actor HARRISON FORD was on hand to be honored as well for his work on behalf of animal welfare. If you can spare three minutes, you might enjoy the opening for the evening’s program featuring Ford.
