Monday, September 29, 2025 UPDATE:

Greetings:

Did someone, perhaps your Mom or a teacher, ever tell you “Haste makes Waste?”

Last night’s newsletter proves that point. I got a late start and in an attempt to get back on schedule, I screwed one item up substantially, and missed another that should have been included. But as a Monday morning bonus, I’ll toss in a new item from, of all places, Awful Announcing, predominately a sports site.

Ginther

The item I screwed up? The move of MARK GINTHER to be ND at WDBJ-TV in Roanoke, VA.

I told you that WDBJ was owned by Graham. Wrong! It is owned by Gray Media.

I told you that he was replacing SCOTT FLANNIGAN. Also wrong! He’s replacing BRETT BONFLEUR who left to become the Assistant ND for Gray’s WFSB-TV in Hartford/New Haven CT.

Apologies.

The item I missed?

Turner

The obituary for former KSTP-TV (Minneapolis-St. Paul/ABC) news director and anchor STAN TURNER. He died last week at the age of 81 after a three year fight with cancer. In addition to this obituary, KSTP posted this tribute to him. He also worked for co-owned All News Channel.

And the bonus item? Awful Announcing points out that 60 Minutes has not posted to Twitter (aka X) since last February, stopping just two days after an exchange with ELON MUSK who called 60 Minutes the biggest liars in the world and that ‘they’ deserve a long prison sentence.

But the news magazine continues to post on many other social sites.

Thanks to those of you who wrote to point out the errors in the WDBJ/Ginther item, though I resent the one that compared me to a WNBA referee.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Greetings:

We have links to a number of stories with interesting angles on exactly what the short lived boycott (in some quarters) of the Jimmy Kimmel Show means.

That’s in Names in the News, along with a few other items,

There are TWO new news directors named this week, with ONE new opening. BOTH the new news directors are returning to the corner office, and ONE is a name familiar to many of you.

Our count of open ND jobs is now at 29.

Again, a number of interesting items in Names in the News, including yet another VP of Content for Tegna and a California station shutters its news department to run newscasts from a San Francisco station.

Also…the answer to the trivia question “What’s the smallest TV market?” may be changing.

And…as far as I know…no GM changes this week.

Newly Named News Directors:

Adkins

WCPO-TV, Cincinnati, OH…JON ADKINS stays in Ohio as he joins this Scripps owned ABC affiliate as News Director. GM JEFF BROGAN shared the news. Jon most recently was ND at Tegna’s WKYC-TV (NBC) in Cleveland, a job he left in March after less than two years, though he spent 17 years there. At WCPO, he replaces BARRY FULMER who left (also in March) to return to WDRB-TV (FOX) in Louisville. Barry was ND here for three years.

Ginther

WDBJ-TV, Roanoke, VA…MARK GINTHER returns to a newsroom as the ND for this Gray Media owned CBS affiliate. Mark’s spent the last 2 1/2 years as Senior VP of Strategy for SmithGeiger. Before that, he worked for four years as Director of News and Operations for Sinclair. He’s also been an ND in Seattle, Dallas, and Des Moines and worked in other places. Here, he replaces BRETT BONFLEUR who left a few weeks ago to become the Assistant ND for Gray’s WFSB-TV in Hartford/New Haven.

New News Director Openings:

Hums

WTHR-TV, Indianapolis, IN…SCOTT HUMS moves up the Tegna corporate ladder as he’s been named VP of the Central News Desk (which apparently is currently called the Central Content Team). Details in this memo from Tegna’s Chief Content Officer ADRIENNE ROARK. Scott’s been at WTHR since 2015, first as Digital Director and then (in 2022 ) Director of Content. He’s also worked in Salt Lake City, South Bend, and for another Indianapolis station.

Names in the News (and other stuff):

As you know by now, both Sinclair’s and Nexstar’s boycott of JIMMY KIMMEL didn’t last very long. CNN’s Reliable Sources Newsletter has many interesting stories and angles about this. If you don’t subscribe…you should, and like all the best newsletters, it’s free. 🙂

The Wall Street Journal profiles Nexstar CEO PERRY SOOK who was the first to pull Kimmel off the air.

NBC named MATT FRUCCI Executive Producer of Nightly News.

Amparo

RAQUEL AMPARO, who left her job as General Manager of CBS owned KTVT-TV in Dallas last month, joins Tegna as one of its VPs of Content. She’ll oversee stations in Texas and posted about her new job…and her old one…on Linkedin. The move reunites her with ADRIENNE ROARK who is now Chief Content officer for Tegna but previously worked at CBS as President of CBS News and Stations.

News Press and Gazette’s KION-TV in Monterrey shut down its news department this week in favor or airing newscasts from CBS’s KPIX-TV in San Francisco. That also meant the end of a Spanish language newscast on the Telemundo affiliate. The Desk has more.

Often a joke as to where someone might look for work, the nation’s smallest TV market may soon be no more. Glendive, MT’s, KXGN-TV is being sold to Montana State University, which has filed to convert the station to a PBS affiliate. According to this article, there is no Nielsen market without a commercial station.

Are you tired of cheery stories like the last two? Considering making a move to teaching? Then check out this story in the SPJ Magazine The Quill from someone who make such a move, KEVIN FINCH. He worked for three stations here in Indianapolis, two as news director, before moving to academia.

General Manager News and Notes:

To the best of my knowledge, NO general manager changes this week.

September 21, 2025

Greetings:

What a week.

There’s just ONE new news director to tell you about this week, with TWO new openings. Our count of open ND jobs stands at 30.

While there were not a lot of ND changes, certainly other stories made news, including shots fired into a Sacramento station. Local police arrested a suspect who posted bail only to be re-arrested by the FBI on federal charges involving the shooting. Details below in Names in the News (and other stuff).

You’ll also find several articles related to the ABC/Jimmy Kimmel drama that you may not have seen elsewhere.

Also: IRE raises a LOT of money at a gala celebrating its 50th anniversary.

Performance coach BARRY NASH has a new ad with a new message to check out. That’s just below.

And there are several GM moves again this wee in our GM News section below.

Newly Named News Directors:

Zonca

WPTV, West Palm Beach, FL…MARK ZONCA stays in Florida and with Scripps as he becomes ND for this NBC affiliate. GM BILL SIEGEL shared the news with the staff. Mark’s been the Assistant ND at Scripps’ WFTS-TV (ABC) in Tampa. He’s also worked in Chicago and other places. He replaces KATHY REYNOLDS who left earlier this year and is now Chief of News and Content Strategy for WINK-TV (CBS) in Ft. Myers.

New News Director Openings:

Barnes

WCBI-TV, Columbus, MS…JOEY BARNES has taken a job with the Columbus Municipal School District as its Public Information Officer. Joey’s worked her twice, returning in 2013 and moving up to news director in late 2020. He also anchored for this MorrisMultimedia owned CBS/FOX affiliate. I emailed BERT SPARKS (listed as GM on the website) to learn more but he has not responded.

Roldan

KXMB-TV, Bismack, ND…STEVE ROLDAN has left this Nexstar owned CBS/CW affiliate after just over one year as ND. Steve had worked at KMGH-TV in Denver for seven years before returning to North Dakota last year.

Names in the News (and other stuff):

A bizarre case in Sacramento where a man was arrested for shooting into the KXTV building. No one was hurt at this Tegna owned ABC facility. The suspect posted bond and was released, only to be arrested by the FBI on federal charges of interfering with a federally licensed broadcast facility. More here.

By now you know about the ABC/JIMMY KIMMEL story. Some stories you may not have seen: Variety suggests the network has no easy way out, and Status.news points out that Disney CEO BOB IGER, once known for his integrity, now faces questions about that. Finally, The Hollywood Reporter says the International Women’s Media Foundation may move a fundraiser from the home of Iger and his wife, WILLOW BAY, who’s the Dean of the Annenberg School of Journalism at USC.

Investigative Reporters and Editors says it raised more than 1.5 million dollars at its 50th anniversary gala Monday in New York. It was great to see some familiar faces there, and hear from speakers including New York Times Publisher AG SULZBERGER, who urged attendees to keep doing their jobs and report without fear or favor. Actor MICHAEL KEATON spoke after receiving the Champion of Investigative Journalism award.

General Manager News and Notes:

Chase

ADAM CHASE joins Nexstar’s KFOR-TV (NBC) in Oklahoma City as GM. He most recently was GM for WTKR-TV in Norfolk but chose to leave that job when Scripps planned to combine the GM role with a department head position. He’s held several other GM jobs.

ED REAMS was promoted to GM at WTKR, replacing Adam, and continues as ND there

GARY BAXTER returns to Grand Rapids as GM and Director of Sales for Scripps’ WXMI-TV (FOX). He’s spent the last 26 years at Scripps’ WSYM-TV in Lansing as Station Manager and Director of Sales. Before that he worked at WOOD-TV in Grand Rapids where (full disclosure) I was ND for part of his tenure there.

September 14, 2025

Greetings:

There are FIVE new news director to tell you about this week, with just TWO new openings. ONE of those news openings involves a man who’s been an ND in more than a dozen stations.

That lowers our count of open ND jobs to 29, the lowest its been in a while.

While none of those openings are featured in a Paid Help Wanted ad, we do have an ad for a very interesting media related opening in Arizona. That’s below.

And our friend, performance coach BARRY NASH has a new ad with a new message to check out.

CBS News has a new ombudsman but there’s a at least one former CBS affiliate ND who has nothing good to say about the hire. That’s in Names in the News, along with a retirement of a former ND who spent he last part of his career working for the House of Representatives.

Finally, several GM moves in our General Manager section below

Newly Named News Directors:

O’Heir

WFLD-TV, Chicago, IL…SEAN O’HEIR will be the next ND for this FOX o-and-o. He’s been the Vice President of Programming and Development at WFLD. His background is, shall we say, unusual for a news director. It’s detailed on his Linkedin page. At WFLD, he replaces GLEN DACY who had the job about a year. A FOX spokesperson told me that Glen decided to move on.

Frame

KING/KONG-TV, Seattle, WA…another internal promotion here, as SUSANNAH FRAME moves to ND. She’s been at this Tegna/NBC affiliate for an amazing 34 years in a variety of roles, currently as Chief Investigative Reporter and Head of Journalism Development. JULIE WOLFE, VP/Content for Tegna’s West region, sent this note. Susannah replaces Julie, who’d been ND until moving to the corporate role.

Geraghty

KSDK-TV, St. Louis, MO…TIM GERAGHTY joins another Tegna/NBC affiliate as ND. GM ALICIA ELSNER made the announcement. For the last 10+ years, Tim’s been the ND at Sinclair’s WKRC-TV (CBS) in Cincinnati, one of his several ND jobs. At KSDK, he replaces two people, MORGAN SCHAAB, who was Director of Content before resigning in July, and News Director ART HOLLIDAY, who retired last month after 46 years. Art started as the weekend sports anchor.

Facey

WISH-TV, Indianapolis, IN…another internal promotion as ERICA FACEY moves up from Assistant ND. She’s been here for six years, beginning as content manager. Erica has also worked in New York, Washington, DC, Atlanta, and Baltimore. She replaces AL CARL, who left this Circle City Broadcasting owned CW affiliate a week ago when his job as VP/News and News Director was eliminated. Erica was replaced as the AND by 29 year station employee ADAM KRENT.

Merckx

KOKH-TV, Oklahoma City, OK…BARBARA MERCKX returns to a newsroom as the ND for this Sinclair owned FOX affiliate. Here’s a brief announcement from Sinclair’s Linkedin page. She’s been a professor at the Journalism School at the University of Oklahoma where she was also ND for OU Nightly, a student produced five nights a week newscast. She replaces ADAM PURSCH who left earlier this year after 12 years as ND.

New News Director Openings:

BonFleur

WDBJ-TV, Roanoke, VA…once again, BRENT BONFLEUR moves with Gray Media, this time to be the Assistant ND at Gray’s WFSB-TV (CBS) in Hartford, Ct. Here’s the staff memo from WFSB ND KEITH CONNORS. Brent’s been the ND for this CBS affiliate for just over two years, following an almost two year run as ND for Gray’s WDTV in Bridgeport, WV. Brent began his career as a producer/reporter/fill-in anchor at KLKN-TV in Lincoln, NE where he rose to Assistant ND.

Boxx

WPSD-TV, Paducah, KY…Thursday’s UPDATE brought news of two major retirements at the end of the year here, here, veteran ND PERRY BOXX and BILL EVANS, President of West Kentucky Media Group. Perry’s been ND here for six years, perhaps the final ND gig in a career that’s seen him run 13 newsrooms. The note he sent his staff is well worth your time…and that of younger journalist you know.

Evans

BILL EVANS first joined WPSD-TV in 1997 as ND and rose to become President of the West Kentucky Media Division of Paxton Media Group. New this edition: Bill’s note to me explains exactly WHAT that entails. Speaking of notes, here’s the one he sent to his team announcing his retirement. And Bill’s Linkedin page details his long career.

Names in the News (and other stuff):

CBS News named its ombudsman this week. It’s KENNETH WEINSTEIN, the former president and CEO of the Hudson Institute.

There’s at least one former CBS affiliate news director who’s not a fan of this appointment, and that’s my friend DAVE BUSIEK. Dave was the ND at KCCI-TV in Des Moines for almost 30 years and is a past president of RTDNA. And to say he’s not a fan is putting it mildly.

Weiser

Former News Director DAN WEISER, who ran newsrooms in Sacramento and Lancaster, PA, is retiring from his second career working for (but not as a member!) of the US House of Representatives.

DRUSILA RIVAS joins KAIT-TV (ABC) in Jonesboro, AR, as Assistant ND. She’d been the Morning EP at WRGB-TV in Albany.

General Manager News and Notes:

We noted the pending retirement of WPSD-TV’s BILL EVANS above. He’ll leave this Paxton Media Group owned NBC affiliate in December.

Glazier

LEEZA GLAZIER adds General Manager responsibilities to her ND job at Scripps’ KGUN-TV in Tucson.

And BILL LANESEY is retiring after a career which included GM jobs in St. Louis, Cincinnati, and Oklahoma City. His last stop was as General Sales Manager for WCAV-TV in Charlottesville, VA. Full disclosure: Bill was a sales rep when I as the ND at WTOL-TV in Toledo.

September 7, 2025

Thursday, September 11, 2025 UPDATE:

Greetings:

TWO retirements of veteran broadcasters at the same station to share, including one who’s been an ND in more stations than many of you have ever set foot in.

Evans

The end of the year brings TWO departures at WPSD-TV in Paducah, KY: VP/GM BILL EVANS is stepping down after 28 years at WPSD, where he began as news director in 1997, moved to GM in January, 2018 and in October, 2018 became President of the West Kentucky Media Group where he also serves as Publisher of the co-owned Paducah Sun. Bill’s Linkedin page tells all, And here’s the note he sent to his staff today.

Boxx

And some of you may have crossed paths over the years with PERRY BOXX, who’s been ND here since March, 2018. When he leaves in December, his almost eight year tenure will be the longest of his 13 news director jobs. They’re all listed here.

Please read the note he sent to his staff. Perhaps you can share it with younger journalists.

At the end of his note, he shares that “Hero and I wish all of you the very best.” If you are wondering who’s Hero, this heartwarming story will answer that question.

Friends can wish Perry well via an email sent here.

We’ll have a very full newsletter this weekend.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Wednesday, September 10, 2025 UPDATE #2:

Greetings:

A news director change in the number three market prompts our second UPDATE of the day.

O’Heir

WFLD-TV, Chicago, IL…SEAN O’HEIR will be the next news director at this FOX o-and-o. He’s currently the Vice President of Programming and Development at WFLD. His background is atypical for a news director. It’s detailed here on his Linkedin page.

He replaces GLEN DACY who, according to a FOX spokesperson, has decided to move on after just one year as news director.

Another busy week. We’ll recap it all Sunday, or sooner if developments warrant.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Wednesday, September 10, 2025 UPDATE:

Greetings

A busy day with THREE top 25 news director jobs filled, including TWO at Tegna.

Frame

KING-TV, Seattle, WA…a longtime reporter gets the ND promotion here. SUSANNAH FRAME moves to the corner office after almost 34 years at this Tegna/NBC affiliate, where her current title is Chief Investigative Reporter and Head of Journalism Development. Her impressive and lengthy background is here. She replaces JULIE WOLFE who was promoted to VP/Content for Tegna’s West region and sent out this note on Susannah’s promotion.

Geraghty

KSDK-TV, St. Louis, MO…TIM GERAGHTY returns to Missouri as the next ND for this Tegna owned NBC affiliate. We told you last week that Tim was leaving Sinclair’s WKRC-TV (CBS) in Cincinnati 10 years. Here’s the announcement from GM ALICIA ELSNER. Tim replaces MORGAN SCHAAB, whose was Director of Content and ART HOLLIDAY, who was ND. (The station will not have a Director of Content). Morgan left the station in July after 18 months and Art retired after 46 years in a variety of roles. Tim’s a Missouri grad and has held several ND jobs.

Facey

WISH-TV, Indianapolis, IN…ERICA FACEY has been promoted to news director for this Circle City Broadcasting owned CW affiliate. She’s been the Assistant ND there. Here’s the story from the station’s web site. which incudes the other stops in her career. Erica replaces VP/News and News Director AL CARL. We told you Sunday that Al’s job had been eliminated after ten years. He was one of about 20 employees who have left the station in the last week or two, many due to a new non-compete addendum to contracts.

We’ll be back Sunday, or sooner if developments warrant.

regards,

Rick Gevers
**** ***** ****

Greetings:

FOUR new openings this week, including a top 25 market station which eliminated the job of VP/News and News Director. With THREE people hired to new jobs, our count of stations with ND openings increases ever so slightly to 31.

In our Names in the News (and other stuff) section, CBS makes what seems like an odd journalism decision. We have a profile of a 93 year old former Houston ND who is still chasing stories (though you will know him better from another job). And there’s some news people with new jobs.

There’s ONE obituary for a longtime CBS affiliate relations director.

And we have THREE retirements among the GM (or former GM) ranks.

Those stories and more as you read on.

Newly Named News Directors:

Cartwright

WBZ-TV, Boston, MA…Thursday’s UPDATE told you that ROB CARTWRIGHT will be the next VicePresident/News for this CBS o-and-o. Rob’s spent the last 12 years in Austin, TX, as ND for Sinclair’s KEYE-TV (CBS). He’s also been a news director in Syracuse and has worked in Dallas (twice), Washington and San Antonio. He replaces GERARDO LOPEZ who left in April after 2 1/2 years as news director.

Kummer

KARE-TV, Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN…we told you Monday via an UPDATE that MATT KUMMER is returning to the Twin Cities as ND for this Tegna owned NBC affiliate. New this edition: Matt’s post on Linkedin about his move. Matt’s a former EP at WCCO-TV in MSP before moving on to other ND jobs in Green Bay (WBAY-TV) and Knoxville (WVLT-TV).

Matt replaces STACEY NOGY. We told you back in May that Stacey would be leaving the station in September. She’s been ND here for seven years and worked at the station for 32 years. Friday was her last day and the station celebrated her career with this story.

KTLM-TV, McAllen, TX…NOEL RAMOS is moving within Telemundo to become the next ND here. He’s been the Assistant ND at KMTD-TV, the Telemundo owned station in Houston.

New News Director Openings:

Carl

WISH-TV, Indianapolis, IN…VP/News & ND AL CARL has left this Circle City Broadcasting owned CW affiliate. In this email, Al told me his job was eliminated. He’s been here for more than nine years, and is a former ND in multiple markets. His is not the only recent departure: According to this story in the Indianapolis Star, eleven employees have left after refusing to sign a non-compete addendum to their contracts.

KEYE-TV, Austin, TX…ROB CARTWRIGHT has been named VP/News for CBS o-and-o WBZ-TV in Boston. But you already know that because we reported Rob’s move above.

Geraghty

WKRC-TV, Cincinnati, OH…it was a busy week for updates. Our third of the week involved TIM GERAGHTY’s departure after more than ten years running the news department for this Sinclair owned CBS affiliate. Tim told me that he would share his next job soon, and we’ll pass it along when he does. Veteran Cincinnati media writer JOHN KIESEWETTER reviewed Tim’s time there. Tim’s career history is here.

WAVE-TV, Louisville, KY…you learned above that MATT KUMMER is leaving this Gray Media owned NBC affiliate to be the next ND for KARE-TV, Tegna’s NBC affiliate in Minneapolis. Matt was here for just over two years.

Obituary:

Young

We just learned this week that GED YOUNG, who worked for CBS for many years in affiliate relations, died June 26th. He was 75 years old. This obituary has limited information, but you’ll see some familiar names if you click on the tribute wall. Ged, I believe, began his career at WTRF-TV in Wheeling, WV, before spending more than 30 years at CBS, ending his time there as Director of Affiliate relations.

Names in the News (and other stuff):

CBS News continues to make, shall we say, some interesting decisions about its journalism. The latest: interviews that air on Face the Nation will air in their entirety and not be edited at all. More from The New York Times and The Washington Post.

The New York Times reported this story about a former KHOU-TV (Houston) News Director who continues to chase stories at the age of 93! And while he was, in fact, once the ND at KHOU, you may know him better by another job: Anchor of the CBS Evening News.

While we’re on the subject of CBS, KIM HARVEY is the new executive producer of the CBS Evening News.

And while we’re talking about networks, NOREEN GILLESPIE joins NBC News as its ombudsman, while at ABC News, KATIE den DAAS is the new SVP of global news gathering.

DANIELLE WILBURN stays within Hearst but moves cross country to become the Assistant ND at WYFF-TV in Greenville, SC. She’s been an EP at Hearst’s KCRA-TV in Sacramento.

Also moving, but a far shorter distance, is JASON VAN HORN. He joins KQDS-TV in Duluth, MN as its next Managing Editor. Jason had previously been a Digital Content Producer at KBJR-TV in Duluth.

General Manager News and Notes:

Three General Manager retirements of note.

Stokes

GARY STOKES will retire as GM at the end of the year from KSPS-TV (PBS) in Spokane, WA. Gary’s a former GM for WVTM-TV in Birmingham and was the news director at WAVY-TV in Norfolk.

DANNY AGUILAR, who’s been a GM in several Texas markets, is retiring this month from Morgan-Murphy’s operations in Victoria, TX.

Former news director turned general manger turned CEO of Visit Fargo-Morehead CHARLEY JOHNSON, is retiring at the age of 75. Charlie anchored at KVLY-TV in Fargo, and was ND and GM there before taking the tourism gig 13 years ago.
