July 7, 2019

Greetings:

As you might expect during a holiday shortened weekend, it was fairly slow this week, but there were still TWO new news director named with another veteran ND announcing his retirement to create the ONE new opening.

We have TWO ads, including ONE for one of the 32 news director openings.

There’s a new Assistant ND in Houston, a new EP in Jacksonville, FL, and we’ll tell you where a former ND landed…and it’s an anchor job. Also, details about a lifetime achievement award for a two time ND who spent many years at CBS.

No obituaries and no new GM news, to the best of my knowledge.

Details about all these stories and more as you read on.

Newly Named News Directors:

Segura

Segura

KCSO/KNSO-TV, Sacramento and Fresno, CA…ADOLFO SEGURA has been named to run both these Telemundo stations, 170 miles apart. The move reunites him with his former boss, JOSE SUAREZ. Adolfo is currently the news director for KDVA-TV, the Telemundo station in San Antonio, a job he’s held since 2013. He’s also worked for Univision.

Canan

Canan

WCPO-TV, Cincinnati, OH…our Wednesday update told you that MIKE CANAN is the new news director for this Scripps owned ABC affiliate. He’s been the interim ND here since CHIP MAHANEY returned to the Scripps headquarters across town to work in a talent development role. Chip was ND here for about 2 1/2 years. Mike’s no stranger to WCPO: before returning last month from a corporate job, he was the editor at WCPO.com. His background is in print.

New News Director Opening:

Morford

Morford

WAFF-TV, Hunstville, AL…BOB MORFORD is retiring after more than 40 years in our business. He’s been the ND for this Gray TV owned NBC affiliate for three years in his second stint there. Bob shared this with me:

After 24 married years living apart, she (wife Margaret) and I found a “perfect” home in Nashville for retirement in May, I hit 40 years in the business on Memorial Day, had a contract ending on June 5th, put all that together, and turned in notice to the station. Last day is July 12.

And he sent this unusual note to his staff. He’s been an ND in Houston, Phoenix, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati (two stations), West Palm Beach, and Knoxville.
