Tuesday, July 1, 2025 UPDATE:

Greetings:

A legendary…and sometimes controversial figure in TV news has died.

BILL APPLEGATE, who served as a news director and general manager at many large market stations, died this morning, according to this Facebook post from his son, WILLIAM APPLEGATE, who followed his dad into the business. (Many of the many comments on that FB post are from names you will recognize.) Bill retired in 2014 after 13 years at this last job, GM for (then) Raycom’s WOIO/WUAB-TV in Cleveland.

When he retired, there were a number of stories, of course. Here’s one from The Cleveland Plain-Dealer, while this one is from ROBERT FEDER, the longtime Chicago TV writer. Bill had TWO stints in Chicago, one as ND for WLS-TV and the other as GM for WBBM-TV.

I’m sure there will be more stories in the days ahead.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Monday, June 30, 2025 UPDATE:

Greetings:

As we hinted last night, more news from Tegna as it restructures its news management team

Valentine

MICHAEL VALENTINE and JAVIER MORGADO have been named Vice Presidents of Content, each overseeing a specific cluster of stations. Michael is a 12 year veteran of Tegna, and is currently VP/Station Manager for WUSA-TV (CBS) in DC. He’s a former ND for WFAA-TV in Dallas, among other stations. Javier is currently with CNN, and has worked for NBC News and in his hometown of Miami. More on each and their duties in this news release.

We’ll be back this weekend with our full newsletter…or earlier if developments warrant another UPDATE.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Greetings:

Some big changes in Tegna’s news management created TWO openings at top 15 market stations. And we have TWO new news directors, one in a top 20 market.

Our count of open ND jobs remains at 34.

ONE of those new openings is featured in a Paid Help Wanted ad below.

We have ONE obituary for a longtime news manager who started as a reporter in a small Minnesota market before moving to much bigger roles.

Just ONE GM change, but at a powerhouse legacy station.

In Names in the News, the National EMMY awards for news and documentaries were revealed this week. We have the list. We also have a not-pretty forecast of what changes will happen to local stations if/when the FCC relaxes ownership rules. And a TV investigative reporter is the new President of IRE.

Finally, our mention last week of the vast difference in attendance at the IRE and RTDNA conventions caught the eye of former ND (and new blogger) KIRK VARNER, whose first blog post on the topic generated more reaction for him than any of this previous 50 or so posts in the short history of his blogging career. Here are links:

Have a great week and stay safe on the Fourth of July!

Newly Named News Directors:

‘Mace’ M.

WFTV, Orlando, FL…MICHAEL ‘MACE’ MACIEJEWSKI has been promoted to news director for this Cox Media owned ABC affiliate. He returned here in May as Manager of Coverage and Content and had earlier worked as the Assistant ND here before leaving in 2020. His complete career history is here. At WFTV he replaces TINA COMMODORE who left in May after five years as ND.

Palmer

WDTV, Clarksburg, VA…LACEY PALMER, a Clarksburg native, becomes the first female news director for this Gray Media owned CBS affiliate. She worked for WBOY-TV in Clarksburg before crossing the street to WDTV, where she has been the digital content producer since 2024. Lacey replaces CHRIS YOST who was ND there from 2023 until earlier this year.

New News Director Openings:

TWO Tegna news managers are among three people who have been named Vice Presidents of Content, overseeing Tegna stations in a specific geographic region.

Fowler

WXIA-TV, Atlanta, GA…CAROL FOWLER held the title of Director of Content for this NBC affiliate. She’s been here since December, 2023. Carol first joined Tegna as Director of Content for KSDK-TV (NBC) in St. Louis. Before that, she had a long career in Chicago news, having served as ND for THREE Chicago stations, WGN-TV, WBBM-TV, and WFLD-TV. She also was the SVP for DigitalNews Products for the Chicago Sun Times.

Wolfe

KING-TV, Seattle, WA… also promoted was JULIE WOLFE. She’s been the news director for this NBC station since June 2021 and was the ND for Tegna’s WHAS-TV (ABC) in Louisville for three years before that. She first joined Tegna as an MMJ at WGRZ-TV in Buffalo, then moved to WXIA-TV in Atlanta. There, she worked as an MMJ for six years before becoming Director of Digital Content and then Assistant ND.

Pena

The third person named VP of Content is former Univision executive CHRIS PENA. He was Senior VP of News for Univision and also worked for MSNBC. More details about these three promotions and details on their new jobs can be found in this news release.

I expect more news along this front from Tegna in the next week or two.

She began as a reporter in Duluth, MN, before moving to Green Bay and then to Minneapolis, where she was an assignment editor for KSTP-TV and WCCO-TV, where she eventually rose to Assistant ND. Names in the News (and other stuff):

It’s widely expected that changes in the makeup of the FCC will result in changes in ownership regulations, which will lead to massive consolidation of station ownership. Former GM and consultant HANK PRICE looks at what that will mean. Warning: You may not like what he forecasts.

ABC’s World News Tonight won the National Emmy for Outstanding Live News Program. It was one of many awards given out over two nights…the complete list is here.

Meanwhile, ABC News has a new New York Bureau Chief (GREG CROFT) and a new Director of News Services (JENNY WAGNON COURTS).

Hinkle

Board members of IRE elected JOSH HINKLE to a two year term as president of the organization. He’s the Director of Investigations and Innovations for Nexstar’s KXAN-TV (NBC) in Austin, TX. KATE HOWARD was chosen as VP, and MARK GREENBLATT was re-elected treasurer. Past President BRIAN ROSENTHAL of the New York Times will serve as a non voting chair of the board.

General Manager News and Notes:

Gray

Just ONE GM change this week. WRAL/WRAZ-TV (NBC/FOX) in Raleigh named HEATHER GRAY as GM. She’d been the interim GM since JOEL DAVIS left for WCAU-TV (NBC owned) in Philadelphia. Heather had been station manager and creative services manager during her career at WRAL.

June 22, 2025

Greetings:

We’re delayed as we were watching game seven of the NBA Finals where my Indiana Pacers fell short. Congrats to the Oklahoma City Thunder.

We have just TWO changes this week. ONE new news director and ONE new opening, so there are still 34 ND jobs available.

ONE of those openings is featured in a Paid Help Wanted ad below.

Sorry to report the death of a former news director who held that job in four markets, the last for 22 years.

There are a lot of GM changes, as well, many in big markets.

Finally, part of our tardiness is travel to/from the IRE Convention in New Orleans where it was a pleasure to see some of you. As longtime readers know, that’s by far my favorite convention. More on the convention below.

Attendance at IRE this year topped 1,650.

Attendance at RTDNA last week (also in New Orleans): 180.

Have a great week.

Newly Named News Directors:

Kalish

WOI-TV, Ames/Des Moines, IA…MATT KALISH gets his first news director job at this Tegna owned ABC affiliate. He’s currently the EP at Griffin’s KOTV (CBS) affiliate in Tulsa. Matt’s also worked for Griffin’s KWTV (also CBS) in Oklahoma City, and has worked in Wichita and Columbia, MO. At WOI, he replaces PERRY PACE who left in March after three years as ND to take the ND job at WRCB-TV in Chattanooga.

New News Director Openings:

Hoffman

WKYC-TV Cleveland, OH…JEFF HOFFMAN’s return to a newsroom was short-lived. Our UPDATE earlier this week told you that he had left this Tegna owned NBC affiliate after just one month as news director. His hire there surprised many, as he had spent the last 22 years as either a General Manager or Station Manager at four different stations, most recently 9+ years as GM for WKMG-TV (Graham/CBS) in Orlando.

Obituary:

Brennan

Sorry to report the death of longtime news director KEVIN BRENNAN. Kevin died Monday at the age of 73 in Savannah, where he spent 22 years as ND for Nexstar’s WSAV-TV before retiring in 2022. Kevin was also a news director in Tampa, Jacksonville, and New Orleans. His former station reported this brief story. But your time will be better spent reading this more detailed obituary.

Names in the News (and other stuff):

As mentioned above, the IRE convention ended today in New Orleans, where six members were elected (or re-elected) to board of directors. Of note: FOUR of the six were broadcasters.

Keeshan

IRE also inducted three members into its Ring of Honor, among them former investigative reporter KEVIN KEESHAN. It was a big week for Kevin, who also announced his retirement after 47 years, the last 14 at NBC. He is currently EVP of News Editorial for the NBC owned stations. He’s also a former ND at ABC’s KFSN-TV in Fresno, and at KGO-TV in San Francisco, where he worked with GM VALARI STAAB who hired him at NBC and sent out this note on his retirement.

Kovaleski

Speaking of investigative reporters and retirements, TONY KOVALESKI is retiring later this year after 42 years exposing wrongdoing. Tony has worked in Phoenix, Houston, San Francisco and twice at KMGH-TV in Denver, which had this story on his retirement. Of note: Tony’s daughter JENNIFER followed in his footsteps and now is also an investigative reporter at KMGH.

JACKLYNN SYLVESTER moves within Tegna to become Assistant ND at KSDK-TV (NBC) in St. Louis. She’s a former ND in Decatur, IL who has been the AND at WBNS-TV in Columbus, OH. She will be replaced there by ABBEY BAKER (MEIER) who’s been the Dayside EP. Abbey’s also worked in Ft. Myers.

General Manager News and Notes:

Lots of GM news this week. Lots, and several of the moves at FOX owned stations.

GLENN BERK, who’s been the GM for FOX’s WITI-TV in Milwaukee, moves to WFLD-TV in Chicago, where he replaces SHEILA OLIVER, who is retiring. MIM DAVEY (a former news director) will replaces Glenn in Milwaukee AND continue to serve as GM for KMSP/WFTC-TV in Minneapolis. More details here.

Another former news director, DAVID HUGHES, moves within Gray Media to become GM for WFSB-TV (CBS) in Hartford. He’d been GM for Gray’s WOIO/WUAB-TV in Cleveland. In Hartford, he replaces DANA NEVES, who was promoted to Senior Managing Vice President for the company.

MICHAEL BROUDER is stepping down in August as GM for Tegna’s WTHR-TV (NBC) in Indianapolis. Michael told me he is going to Ball State in nearby Muncie, IN, to teach. He’s been an adjunct there. By the time he leaves, Michael’s will have been GM here for six years…and five years before that as the director of marketing. His complete career history is here.

And WES MILBOURN is retiring as VP/GM of Nexstar’s KFOR-TV in Oklahoma City. He’s been GM there since 2006 in his second stint at the station, interrupted by a brief time in Omaha.

June 15, 2025

Thursday, June 19, 2025 UPDATE:

Greetings:

It struck us as an unusual move when it happened last month, and we have the same reaction now that it has (new word alert!) unhappened.

Hoffman

JEFF HOFFMAN has left Tegna’s WKYC-TV (NBC) in Cleveland after just one month as news director. While Jeff had been an ND in the past, his last three jobs had been GM positions, including an almost ten year run as GM for WKMG-TV (Graham/CBS) in Orlando, which he left earlier this year. No details on why he left, but here’s the memo that GM JOHN TREVINO sent to the staff where he announced Jeff’s hiring.

I hope to have more on this story in our full newsletter this weekend.

I’ll be at IRE Friday and Saturday and hope to see some of you there.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Greetings:

Happy Father’s Day!

Can’t claim to be a father as my wife and I don’t have kids, but we are VERY good with them.

Sometimes for as long as five minutes.

In this week’s report, THREE news directors and just ONE new opening, so there are now 34 ND jobs available.

ONE of those new openings is featured in a Paid Help Wanted ad below.

In Names in the News:

  • A Texas station produces newscasts despite heavy damage to its studio.
  • Two former news directors have new jobs.
  • A longtime journalist who many of you know is Teacher of the Year.
  • And a longtime broadcast publishes his FIFTH book.

And there’s a new GM in Odessa. All that and more below.

The annual IRE convention is in New Orleans this week. More than 1,500 journalists will be attending. Hope to see you there!

Newly Named News Directors:

Nagus

KMOV-TV, St. Louis, MO…Tuesday’s UPDATE told you that CHRIS NAGUS is returning to this Gray/CBS affiliate as ND. He was an investigative reporter here for 13 years before leaving in 2021 for jobs as Director of Storytelling at Scripps and Graham. New this edition: Chris tells his own story. He’s also worked in Kansas City, Des Moines, and Columbia, MO. Chris replaces SCOTT DIENER who is retiring after nine years at KMOV and years as ND at other stations.

June 8, 2025

Tuesday, June 10, 2025 UPDATE:

Greetings:

What some might consider a non-traditional hire was just announced for a news director job in a top 25 market.

Nagus

CHRIS NAGUS returns to Gray Media’s KMOV-TV (CBS) in St. Louis as its next ND. He worked there for 13 years as an investigative reporter before he left in 2021 to serve as Director of Storytelling and Content, first for Scripps and then for Graham Media. (In both cases he was hired by SEAN McLAUGHLIN who had been his ND at KMOV.) He still lives in St. Louis with his wife and their three sons (triplets!). Chris has also worked in Kansas City, Des Moines, and Columbia, MO.

KMOV GM JD SOSNOFF shared today’s news with the staff via this memo.

Chris replaces SCOTT DIENER. We told you last month that Scott was retiring in July after nine years as ND at KMOV. He’s also been a ND in too many places to list here, but Linkedin has the full story.

We’ll have the all the latest changes in this weekend’s newsletter.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Greetings:

Distracted as we were by both the Tony Awards AND an NBA Finals game, apologies in advance for any typos, misspellings, omissions OR mistakes this week. But I tried to limit them!

And there are some changes to share: THREE news directors and FOUR new openings this week, so there are now 35 ND openings.

ONE of those new openings is featured in a Paid Help Wanted ad below.

We have more information on the passing of longtime TV critic GARY DEEB whose death we first reported last week.

More details on TWO stories we first brought you in a midweek UPDATE: the affiliation change in Atlanta and Allen’s decision to explore selling its stations.

Also in Names in the News: A Shreveport newsman is suing a former competitor for the way it reported his departure. And retirements from two longtime newspeople, though one (a FOUR time news director) left our business years ago.

By the way, the RTDNA convention is this week in New Orleans. It’s the first one I’ve missed since 1978. I look forward to hearing about it for those of you who do attend.

Newly Named News Directors:

Travinski

Travinski

KTHV-TV, Little Rock, AR…DEAN TRAVINSKI moves across town to become news director for this Tegna owned CBS affiliate. He’s been the Assistant ND at cross-town KARK-TV (Nexstar/NBC) for the last six years and has also worked in Dallas (two stations), Kansas City, and Oklahoma City. At KTHV, Dean replaces SHALYA TEATER who is leaving after 5+ years as ND and 18 years at KTHV.

Carmean

WMDT-TV, Salisbury, MD…JOE CARMEAN will be the next news director for this Marquee Broadcasting owned ABC affiliate. He’s a veteran of the area having worked in both newspapers and for another TV station. Details in this news release from the company. He replaces SARAH TRUITT. Sarah’s been the news director for the last 14 years and worked at the station for 20.

Clouse

KAAL-TV, Rochester, MN…we’re a little tardy in reporting that DAN CLOUSE is the new news director at this Hubbard Broadcasting owned ABC affiliate. He started there in April Dan’s been the ND for Allen’s KIMT-TV in Rochester for the last three years. He replaces BRIANNA COOK who left to take a job outside of TV.

New News Director Openings:

Pursch

KOKH-TV, Tulsa Oklahoma City, OK…ADAM PURSCH is leaving this Sinclair owned FOX affiliate after more than twelve years as news director. He’s also worked in Salt Lake City, Boston, and New York City.

KIMT-TV, Mason City, IA/Rochester, MN…you learned above that DAN CLOUSE left this Allen Media owned station to become ND for Hubbard’s KAAL-TV in Rochester.

Cleary

WBNG-TV, Binghamton, NY…TANYA CLEARY has left this Gray Media owned operation after two years as ND. Tanya spent ten years as a producer in two different Pennsylvania markets before taking this position. The station is looking for her replacement, and the paid help wanted ad just below has more details.

WLUC-TV, Marquette, MI…ANDREW LACOMBE is leaving this Gray Media operation after three years as ND. I’m told that he has a new job in Wisconsin but have not yet been able to confirm that. When I do, I’ll pass it along.

Obituary:

Deeb

We have more on the passing last month of GARY DEEB, a longtime TV critic who worked for two papers in Chicago and for WLS-TV. Both the Chicago Tribune and The Chicago Sun-Times finally reported his passing, as did WBBM-TV as well as The Buffalo News where he worked before moving to Chicago. We told you last week that Gary died May 17th at the age of 79.

Names in the News (and other stuff):

Our midweek UDPATE told you that CBS is switching its affiliation in Atlanta from Gray’s WANF-TV to its own WUPA-TV. WANF’s story is here, and CBS’s is here. New this edition: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution looks at what it calls ‘a huge shake up‘ in Atlanta TV.

That same update told you that ALLEN MEDIA has hired an investment firm to explore selling its stations. The company owns 28 stations in 21 (mostly medium and smaller) markets. New this edition: veteran broadcaster HANK PRICE cautions employees not to be too optimistic given the many changes in the industry.

Lunn

Former KTBS-TV (Shreveport) anchor and news director BILL LUNN is suing KTAL-TV there for its reporting on his 2024 departure from KTBS. Details here.

Longtime Univision anchor JORGE RAMOS is among three industry veterans to be honored with the University of Missouri’s School of Journalism Missouri Medal.

Multi time news director (Cleveland, Portland, Kansas City and Jacksonville) LYNN HEIDER is retiring after 14 years in a public affairs and communication role at the Go West Credit Union. She talked about it on her Linkedin page.

Speaking of retirement, longtime Grand Rapids/Kalamazoo newsman JON McCRARY is hanging it up after 48 years in our business. This link to his retirement post also includes a link to a video (produced for his Silver Circle induction) that is worth a few minutes. Jon is retiring as Assistant ND for WWMT-TV (CBS) in Kalamazoo where he spent the bulk of his career, though he did spend some time at WOOD-TV where I hired him as assignment editor.

General Manager News and Notes:

JERRY BREHM is retiring after six years as GM for WTEN-TV in Albany, NY. That’s an ABC affiliate which is owned by Nexstar.
