April 26, 2026

Greetings:

There’s ONE new ND to tell you about with TWO new openings, bringing our list of open stations to 31.

We have ONE paid ad for one of those new openings in the Pacific Northwest.

There’s ONE new GM in New York state.

And we have lots of news items.

  • Nexstar’s PERRY SOOK says eventually ‘two or three companies’ will own all America’s stations.
  • We have the latest update in the court case on the Nexstar-Tegna deal.
  • Magid says TV newsrooms need to change the way they do business ASAP. (Wanna bet they’ll suggest a consultant to help you with that?)
  • We have a long profile of TONY DOKOUPIL, the latest ratings for his Evening News, another look at how CBS affiliates view the late night programming move, and a new job for a former CBS Mornings EP.
  • Two local stations won Peabody Awards this week.
  • And a new garden at the Missouri J-School honoring identical twin brothers who had great careers in journalism.

That and more below!

Newly Named News Director:

   Carl

KWTV, Oklahoma City, OK…AL CARL will be the next Director of Content for this Griffin Media CBS affiliate, reporting to Griffin’s Director of Content ANDY MILLER. Andy sent this note, and Al sent one to friends. He replaces NATHAN ELLIOTT who will coordinate statewide coverage for Griffin’s stations in OKC and Tulsa. Al left his job as VP/News for WISH-TV (CW) in Indianapolis last fall when it was eliminated. His complete career history can be found here.

New News Director Openings:

Kane

KREM-TV, Spokane, WA…JESSIE KANE is stepping away from local news and leaving this Tegna owned CBS affiliate after more than six years as ND. Details in this memo from GM RJ MERRITT. This is Jessie’s second tour with KREM, having worked as a producer earlier in her career. She followed that up with a national tour of Tegna stations, working in Charlotte, Seattle and Sacramento before returning to KREM.

Randal

KIFI-TV, Idaho Falls, ID…SETH RANDAL will leave this News Press & Gazette station in mid May. In this Linkedin post, Seth says the job was one of the great honors of his life and that he is looking forward to great possibilities ahead. He’s been the ND there for two years, and held many other jobs, though few in local news. KIFI is looking for this replacement: Check out the paid help wanted ad just below.

Names in the News (and other stuff):

Nexstar’s CEO PERRY SOOK told an NAB audience that only ‘two or three companies’ will eventually own all of America’s local TV stations. And in the same appearance, he ripped into Direct TV, which is fighting Nexstar’s attempt to buy Tegna.

Meanwhile, the federal judge handling that case set deadlines for each litigants to submit briefs in the legal attempt to block the purchase.

Speaking of NAB, the Magid consulting firm says stations need to dramatically change they way they do news. Here’s the story from Variety.

Vanity Fair takes a long look at CBS Evening News anchor TONY DOKOUPIL and wonders if he will survive the BARI WEISS era at CBS.

The latest ratings for his program are not good.

And BILL CARTER, who has long covered the late night TV scene, takes a look at how CBS affiliates view the network’s latest programming move after your late local news.

Former CBS Morning EP SHAWNA THOMAS is now working at MS NOW, where she will be political director.

Congratulations to KABC-TV in Los Angeles and KMBC-TV in Kansas City who both won Peabody Awards this week. KABC was honored (along with ABC News) for its coverage of the wildfires, while KMBC for an investigative series looking at abuses in prisons. Here’s the complete list of winners.

The University of Missouri dedicated the LANCE and VANCE HEFLIN Memorial Garden on Friday. Lance and Vance were identical twins who both died too young.  And they explored different paths in journalism.  Vance went the photojournalist route, while Lance was twice a DuPont Award winner while working for WPLG-TV in Miami. He later worked for CBS News and was the founding executive producer for America’s Most Wanted.

General Manager News and Notes:

Just one GM move this week.

Hubbard Broadcasting named ANTHONY KAHL to be President and GM of its Rochester, NY, NBC affiliate, WHEC-TV. Here’s the news release. He most recently has been GM for Rincon’s KOKI-TV in Tulsa, OK.

Anthony replaces DICK REINGOLD who retired. We told you last February that Dick was retiring after almost eight years at WHEC, and a long career in our industry. Old friends can send him a note by clicking here.

April 20, 2026

Wednesday, April 22, 2026 UPDATE:

Greetings:

Talk about falling up.

   Carl

I speak of AL CARL, who today was announced as the new Director of Content for Griffin Media’s KWTV (CBS) in Oklahoma City. He’ll report to Griffin’s Vice President of Content, ANDY MILLER, who sent this note to the staff. And here’s the note Al sent friends, looking forward to his future job and reminiscing about his last job as VP/News of WISH-TV (CW) in Indianapolis. That job was eliminated last fall.

It’s been a busy month for Al. We told you two weeks ago that he married TERESA PAXTON HAZEL.

Al’s a former news director in New Haven, Omaha, and Huntsville with some other stops as outlined on his Linkedin page.

Two other notes. Due to an editing error (I really should not have been writing last weekend’s newsletter at 2:00 AM in Las Vegas), I failed to include a link to an article about CBS affiliates and their unhappiness over the network’s new late night programming schedule.

Here’s that link.

And speaking of Las Vegas…and NAB…the organization reported attendance at ‘about” 59,000. Several vendors with whom I spoke doubted the actual number was anywhere near that given the number of free exhibit passes that went unused.

Quite a change from years ago when attendance soared over 100,000. Certainly a sign of the times.

We’ll be back Sunday with our full report, ideally NOT written at 2:00 AM.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Greetings:

Our attendance at NAB in Las Vegas is to blame for our late delivery this week, but lots of interesting stories…and a few news director changes.

There’s ONE new ND at a Spanish language station in a top 35 market station, while there are TWO new openings, bringing our list of open stations to 30.

We have ONE paid ad for one of those openings at a network duopoly in a top FIVE market. We also have an ad for a GM job overseeing student media at the University of Oklahoma.

Weather guru TIM HELLER returns to these pages with a new ad. Click on it just below to learn more about an AI weather tool designed to help stations produce more compelling weather content.

Sciline is offering a webinar on a crash course on beyond the basics of science reporter.

And if you are at NAB, check out the Octopus newsroom add and visit its booth in the North Hall.

Also this week, TWO new GM moves, both involving Pittsburgh GMs who will now oversee TWO stations in different states.

But wait, there’s more!

  • A federal judge modifies a restraining order blocking Nexstar’s Tegna purchase. We have Nexstar’s response.
  • The new owner of an Indianapolis station adds more local programming, except it just a repeat of programs that air on its other station.
  • CBS affiliates are not happy about the changes to the networks’ late night programming.
  • A former ND and cable exec turned consultant does nice things for his alma mater.
  • And we have another taker on our free Situations Wanted item.

There’s much more as you read on!

Newly Named News Director:

Salas

KWEX-TV, San Antonio, TX…MYRNA SALAS has been promoted to news director for this Univision station. She’s been the assistant news director here since 2022 and is a former reporter. She replaces MOANA RAMIREZ who left earlier this year (after 12+ years as ND ) to become VP/News for Univision.

New News Director Openings:

Maggie G.

WCIA-TV, Champaign, IL…MAGGIE GRINESTAFF is leaving this Nexstar owned CBS affiliate. She’s a new mom and has decided to stay her with her two children. She’s been the news director here for almost three years, and has been at the station for almost 12 years. She began as a reporter, became the noon anchor. and then moved to the assignment desk, assistant news director and then ND.

Breazeale

KRIS-TV, Corpus Christi, TX…JIM BOB BREAZELE has left this Scripps owned NBC affiliate after 4+ years as Senior Director of Local Content. He’s a longtime Texas newsman as detailed in his Linkedin page. Jim Bob is a former sports talk radio host and is a cancer survivor as well.

Names in the News (and other stuff):

A federal judge updated a temporary restraining order to a preliminary restraining order, blocking Nexstar from moving forward with its purchase of Tegna. New this edition: The New York Times story on the order, and here is Nexstar’s press release in response to the judge’s order.

Circle City Broadcasting, the new owner of WRTV (ABC) posted this news release touting the addition of ‘three new locally focused shows’ and bragging about how it’s adding even more local content to its programming schedule.

Sounds great, right?

Except those shows already run on CCB’s WISH-TV (CW) in Indianapolis. Net new programming hours for the market? ZERO.

TVREV looks at CBS’s move to sell the post-late news time slot to BYRON ALLEN. While CBS owned stations will benefit (a little) from the move as the parent company will make money, none of that revenue will hit your friendly local non-CBS owned affiliate. One large market CBS GM told me he would NEVER choose to take the Allen programs.

And TVREV also looks at what it calls “Managing the End Game of Local TV.” The article is unlikely to fill you with optimism about the future.

Former FCC Chief Counsel ROBERT CORN-REVERE posted a lengthy, sharply worded letter to current FCC Chair BRENDAN CARR. He’s not a fan but did suggest to Carr that he not go for a car ride with the President anytime soon, since that apparently is how PAM BONDI learned she was out of a job.

LINDSAY KING joins Hubbard’s KSTP-TV (ABC) in Minneapolis as Assistant News Director, coming from WBTV (Gray/CBS) in Charlotte where she was managing editor. Her KSTP bio has more on her background.

Let’s close with some good news.

Mason

Congratulations to former news director and longtime consultant ALAN MASON and his wife PRISCILLA. They’ve endowed a professorship at Alan’s alma mater, Clemson University. This University news release has much more about the impact Alan believes Clemson had on his career and also covers his career history.

General Manager News and Notes:

Two GM moves to report and both involve managers overseeing two stations. (A wag suggested this proves GMs don’t have much to do if they can oversee two stations far apart.)

For the record, it was not me.

KEVIN HAYES will continue to oversee Cox Media Group’s WPXI-TV (NBC) in Pittsburgh and will also run the company’s WHIO-TV in Dayton. With that move, he gets a new title: Regional Vice President. DARREN MOORE, who’d been the GM for WHIO, moves to Orlando as Senior VP and Chief Sales Officer.

And I’m not sure if this is a copycat situation, but another Pittsburgh GM will oversee two stations. Sinclair named TIM McCOY GM for WPGH/WPNT-TV. He’s been the GM for Sinclair’s WTOV-TV in Steubenville and will continue in the that role. This article reports that Tim replaces longtime WPGH GM RICH COOK whose position was eliminated.

Saturday, April 18, 2026 UPDATE:

Greetings:

If you see any executives from Nexstar at NAB this week, you might offer to buy them a drink.

That’s because a federal judge turned his temporary restraining order blocking the company’s purchase of Tegna into a preliminary restraining order. What does it mean? MANY billable hours will ensure as appeals are guaranteed to follow.

Here are two articles, one from The Wall Street Journal and the other from Deadline.com.

It will be interesting to see how Nexstar stock fares when the markets open Monday morning.

Speaking of NAB, I’ll be at the convention until Tuesday morning and hope to see you there.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Greetings:

A busier week of ND changes with THREE openings but NO new hires as far as I know. There are now 29 stations on our list of open ND jobs.

We have ONE paid ad for one of those openings at a network duopoly in a top FIVE market. We also have an ad for a GM job overseeing student media at the University of Oklahoma.

BARRY NASH returns with a new ad and column and a reminder that if you’re headed to NAB, check out the ad for Octopus Newsrooms and visit their booth in Las Vegas.

TWO new GMs to report, both promoted within their current companies.

But wait, there’s more!

  • A federal judge extends a TRO blocking Nexstar’s Tegna acquistion.
  • Nexstar has cancelled its deal with NBC NewsChannel and plans to do the same with CBS and ABC.
  • An Indianapolis station adds five hours of news a week in a time period where the HUTs are SEVEN. And there are three other stations already in the time period.
  • The head of Circle City Broadcasting defends the massive layoffs when his company acquired WRTV in Indianapolis.
  • Charges of discrimination against a CBS o-and-o.
  • And a former ND who’s worked for CNN NewsSource for 15 years is leaving…we’ll tell you why.
  • And we’ll tell you about the multi-time news director who just got married.
  • And our free Situations Wanted item returns after a long hiatus.

Have a great week!

Newly Named News Directors:

No changes that I’m aware of. Please let me know if I’ve missed something.

New News Director Openings:

WCAU/WWSI-TV, Philadelphia, PA…this NBC owned duopoly (NBC/Telemundo) is looking for a duopoly news director who will report to the staton’s VP of News. We told you two weeks ago that ANA HERNANDEZ was leaving her job as ND for WWSI to go to sister NBC o-and-o WNBC-WNJU-TV in New York as ND for that duopoly. You can learn more about this opportunity and apply by checking out the Paid Help Wanted ad just below.

O’Connor

This week, meet JOHN KENNEDY O’CONNOR:

Experienced broadcast professional in top 120 markets, seeking new challenge following station ownership transfer leading to newsroom merger. Established News Anchor with multiple CBS & NBC affiliates, with live presentation and reporting experience across multiple international networks and online platforms.

News Director & Executive Producer, leading large teams of reporters, digital content providers and technical crews. Demonstrable success in building live TV audiences and online digital platforms, launching stand alone programming for digital audiences, cross promoted on broadcast channels.

Increased viewership across all previous stations as Anchor and News Director, expanding audience as market leading channel. Respected community outreach success, involved in multiple local projects spearheading station representation and audience development. Additionally, experienced published author, with previous roles in Text To Speech direction with a leading social media network

Here’s his resume with contact information and a link to a recent newscast.

Names in the News (and other stuff):

A federal judge has extended his temporary restraining order preventing Nexstar from moving forward with its purchase of Tegna. Key word here: temporary

In other Nexstar news, the company has ended its deal with NBC to use NBC NewsChannel material, and plans to do the same with affiliate feeds from ABC and CBS. This Reuters story says Nexstar stations are being told to use material from Nexstar’s NewsNation cable network. That would seem to be a big financial hit for NewsChannel, CBS’s Newspath, and ABC’s NewsOne.

True to its word, Circle City Broadcasting has increased the amount of local news produced by its newly acquired WRTV (ABC) in Indianapolis. The starting time for WRTV’s morning news has moved to 4:00 AM, making it the FOURTH local station beginning news at that early hour, where they will battle for a whopping seven rating points. One of those four stations is co-owned WISH-TV.

Meanwhile, CCB President and CEO DeJUAN McCOY participated in what was billed as exclusive interview with a podcast produced by his company. (Quite the journalistic coup to do a podcast with the boss, eh?) The Indianapolis Star. reported on the interview.

A Baltimore newspaper that covers the Black community, The Baltimore Beat, is reporting that employees of CBS’s WJZ-TV are speaking out against retaliation and discrimination by the station. A CBS spokesman called the charges “unfounded, unsubstantiated, and flat out false,”

Old friend Friend of long-standing VICKI MONTET reached out to let me (and you!) know that she’s leaving CNN, where she’s worked for 15 years as a NewsSource Sales and Affiliation Representative. This note explains why she is leaving, what her future plans are, and includes contact information for friends who might want to reach out. She’s a former ND in Charlotte and Nashville, and held other news management jobs. More on her Linkedin page.

Finally, congratulations to longtime news director AL CARL who tied the knot last weekend with TERESA PAXTON HAZEL. Al most recently was VP/News and News Director for WISH-TV (CW) here in Indianapolis, a job he left last September when the station eliminated the position. He’s been an ND in multiple other markets. Friends who’d like to wish (pun intended) Al and Teresa well can do so via an email here.

General Manager News and Notes:

Two GM moves to report:

Rincon Broadcasting Group named ROBERT P. RICHARDSON GM of its Memphis Fox affiliate, WHBQ-TV. It’s a transfer with Rincon for Robert, who’d been running the company’s WICS/WICD-TV in Champaign-Springfield, IL.

And in another transfer, Gray Media is sending JIM HAYS to run WTHI-TV (CBS) in Terre Haute, IN. He’s been the marketing director for Gray’s WOIO-TV (CBS) in Cleveland.

April 5, 2026

Monday, April 6, 2026 UPDATE:

Greetings:

There’s a news director change in a top 15 market today, and we have two updates from items from last night’s newsletter.

 Evans

LAURA EVANS, who’s been the news director for Cox Media’s KIRO-TV (CBS) in Seattle, left the station today. She’s been the news director there for almost three years, following 1 1/2 years as ND for sister Cox station WHIO-TV (CBS) in Dayton, OH. Before moving to Dayton, Laura spent 4+ years at KING-TV in Seattle, including four months as the interim news director. Her complete work history is on her Linkedin page.

Two updates from last night.

Due to an editing error on my part, I used an incorrect link for an ironic opinion piece from The Indianapolis Star regarding the mass layoffs at WRTV (ABC) here in Indianapolis after an ownership change. Here’s the correct link.

And the link to the ad for Octopus Newsroom was faulty. Here’s a better one.

Barring other big news, we’ll see you next weekend with our full report.

regards,

Rick Gevers

  • Nexstar appeals the TRO blocking its Tegna deal with an unusual argument.
  • Check out KIRK VARNER‘s thoughts on some of this week’s news.

Obituary:

Plyler

Long ago WXII-TV (Winston-Salem, NC) News Director DAVE PLYLER died March 31. He was 87 years old. After leaving broadcasting in the mid 1980s, Dave continued in public service, serving as a commissioner for Forsyth County for about 30 years, including ten years as commission chair. Check out this obituary to learn much more on his life and career.

Names in the News (and other stuff):

Lots of this week’s industry news came from here in Indianapolis, where Circle City Broadcasting, owner of WISH-TV (CW) and WNDY-TV (independent) closed on its purchase of Indy’s ABC affiliate, WRTV from Scripps…and promptly fired almost all of the WRTV staff. This story from The Indianapolis Business Journal suggests as few as FIVE people survived the ownership change.

DEJUAN McCOY, the owner and President of CCB. pledged to increase local coverage by seven hours as week (aka one whole hour a day) that he says will be ‘separate and distinct’ from WISH-TV’s programming.

We’ll see. Tough to do with most of the staff gone, though you wouldn’t know that by checking out the WRTV staff page which has not been updated (as of this writing) but may well be by the time you check it out.

And a certain irony came in this opinion piece from the local daily, the Gannett owned Indianapolis Star in which the author bemoans the cuts. The irony: its from a newspaper which is a shadow of its former self and is currently printed 200+ miles away in Peoria, IL, resulting in a deadline of mid-afternoon the day before publication.

In a column worth your time called “Why the F Are We Surprised Anymore?” old friend KIRK VARNER weighed in on the changes here in Indianapolis, in Tulsa (which we discussed last week) and Nexstar’s ‘novel’ legal argument in fighting the TRO mentioned just above. Important to note: Unlike the President, Kirk avoided using the full obscenity although he did hint at it.

   Cole

JOE COLE, the former news director and anchor for Nexstar’s KXRM-TV (FOX) in Colorado Springs, has made a career change. He and his wife, SARAH GIBEAU-COLE are the new owners of what this article describes as a Colorado Springs legend, POOR RICHARD’s, which is…a bookstore…and a toy store…and a restaurant. Joe left KXRM last November, just one month shy of his 25th anniversary.

General Manager News and Notes:

Jahelka

Longtime broadcaster CRAIG JAHELKA is retiring at the end of the month. He’s currently President of Draper Media and first joined the company as General Manager of its station WBOC-TV in Salisbury, MD. He’d earlier been a GM in Bakersfield, a Vice President and station manager in Scranton, PA, and spent eight years as a news director in Memphis and Huntsville.
