June 10, 2018
Greetings:
I hope to see many of you at this year’s IRE conference in Orlando.
If we connect there, we could discuss this week’s TWO new news directors. But why would we?
Or we could talk about this week’s TWO new openings…but, again, why?
Or we could talk about the list of openings, which stands at 31. But I’d like to think there are other weighty issues to consider.
Like our FIVE paid help wanted ads this week. THREE of those ads are for news director openings.
And there’s good stuff in Names in the News…including a handful of news managers on the move and some items about former NDs, one a well-known network correspondent.
TWO GM moves this week…both involve former NDs.
Read on and I’ll see you in Orlando.
Newly Named News Directors:

Fries
WLOS-TV, Asheville, NC…there’s a new news director here as the current ND, JULIE FRIES, gets a promotion. We’ll tell you about Julie first. She’s headed to WLOS owner Sinclair Broadcasting as a group news director. Julie has been a regional ND for Sinclair for the past few years, in addition to her duties at WLOS, where she’s been the ND for 11 years, and the Assistant ND and EP before that. She’s also worked in Greenville, SC, Columbia, SC, and Washington, DC.

Nemitz
Julie will be replaced by her assistant news director, BRIAN NEMITZ. He’s held that role for the past 3 1/2 years, and earlier worked as an executive producer for stations in Miami, and Pensacola, FL. Brian’s also produced in Grand Rapids and Eau Claire, WI. The station sent out this news release covering both moves. Congrats to both Julie and Brian.

Buehler
KOTA/KEVN-TV, Rapid City, SD…PHIL BUEHLER is the new ND for this Gray Television ABC/FOX operation. He’s been in the job since April and replaces JOHN PETERSEN who retired in April after 24 years as ND. Phil’s background is a little more circuitous, beginning as a sports anchor, transition to news anchor, and then departing the TV business completely for seven years. His Linkedin page fills in that story.
New News Director Openings:
KUSA-TV, Denver, CO…we told you in a mid-week update that CHRISTY MORENO was being promoted to GM of sister-Tegna station WHAS-TV in Louisville. Much more on her move in our GM News section below.

Galloway
WTOC-TV, Savannah, GA…SCOTT GALLOWAY is leaving this Raycom Media owned CBS affiliate at the end of the month. He’s spent three years as news director there and 32 years with the company, most of them at sister station WFIE-TV in Evansville, IN. WTOC GM LARRY SILBERMANN sent this note to the staff:
“For the past three years, he (Scott) has lead our team through some dramatic changes and certainly leaves our news department in much better condition than when he found it.”
No word on Scott’s future plans.
