Greetings:

Two items today. I believe we are the first to report both of them.

A reorganization at Tegna means two veteran newspeople are leaving the company, and a longtime Wisconsin news director is stepping down.

Tegna is eliminating the jobs of TWO of the company’s FIVE Regional VPs of Content with the duties spread among the remaining three VPs.

Valentine

MICHAEL VALENTINE is one of the two people who is out of a job. He’s been in his current role at Tegna for a little more than a year, and spent eight years before that as a VP/Station Manager for the company’s Washington, DC, station, WUSA-TV (CBS). He’s a former news director in Dallas (WFAA-TV), Norfolk (WVEC-TV), and Evansville, IN (WEHT-TV). Michael’s complete career history is contained in his LinkedIn profile.

Wolfe

JULIE WOLFE is the other Regional VP of Content who is out in this shuffle. She’s been in the role, like Michael, for little more than a year. Before that she was the ND for Tegna’s KING-TV (NBC) in Seattle and WHAS-TV (ABC) in Louisville. She also spent 12 years at Tegna’s WXIA-TV (NBC) in Atlanta. Julie began with the company as an MMJ at WGRZ-TV in Buffalo. More on her Linkedin page.

Their duties will be shared by CAROL FOWLER, CHRIS PENA, and JAVI MORGADO. As part of the reorganization, news directors now will report to their local GM as opposed to the regional content VP.

In Wisconsin, TIM VETSCHER is stepping down after 5+ years as news director for Scripps’ WTMJ-TV (NBC) in Milwaukee (and almost seven years at the station). When you’ll ready Tim’s note to the staff, you’ll learn that the recent loss of a family member helped drive his decision. (That link also includes the staff memo from GM JOE POSS.) KTAZ/KHRR-TV, Phoenix, AZ…CHRISTIAN VILLEGAS has been promoted to news director for these Telemundo stations. He’s been the executive producer there and succeeds NOE GONZALEZ who was promoted to News Director for WCAU/WWSI-TV (NBC/Telemundo) in Philadelphia. Noe will report to ELIZABETH FLORES who is the VP/News for that duopoly.

WMAR-TV, Baltimore, MD…JEFF HERMAN will become the next news director for this Scripps owned ABC affiliate on September 10th. He’s currently the Assistant News Director there and has held a variety of other management positions during his 23 years there. He started his career in Pennsylvania.

Groft

Jeff replaces KELLY GROFT who’s been the news director for WMAR since 2009 and has worked at the station for 27 years. In this Linkedin post, Kelly refers to her departure as a ‘pause’ in her career to recover after the loss of several family members during the past few months.

WJBK-TV, Detroit, MI…BROOKS BLANTON is leaving this FOX o-and-o after just ten months as news director. I reached out to Brooks for comment and he referred me to FOX corporate which sent this statement. Brooks has been a news director at two different stations (WZZM-TV and WXMI-TV)in Grand Rapids, MI, and spent less than a year as ND for WCCB-TV in Charlotte.

KOLD-TV, Tucson, AZ…JESSICA BOBULA has left this Gray Media owned CBS affiliate after more than four years as news director. Earlier in her career she was a producer there. Jessica’s also been an ND in Greenville, NC, and has worked in markets large and small as her Linkedin page explains. KLKN/KBSI-TV, Lincoln, NE/Cape Girardeau, MO…Rincon Broadcasting Group is looking for a news director to oversee the news departments for these two stations, which, according to Apple Maps, are 543 miles apart. Obituary:

Capener

TED CAPENER, a long ago news director for KSL-TV in Salt Lake City, died August 17th at the age of 94. In addition to his stint as ND for KSL, he also launched Bonneville’s DC Bureau. There’s much more about his life and career in this obituary.

The New York Post reports an ‘earthquake’ hit the News 12 newsrooms in New York with dozens of layoffs. Among those was veteran news manager SHANE MORELAND who is moving back to Florida, where he worked earlier in his career. Shane’s joining CNTV, a group which produces programming for conventions, as a content manager.

Kiernan

A veteran newsman who held several news director jobs, including four in top 20 markets, is retiring. JEFF KIERNAN will step down in October after 40 plus years in our business. He explained why in this note to me, which also covers some of his jobs along the way.

Nexstar has picked a new board of directors for Tegna. That after a court ordered that its first board violated a court order.

NABJ gave several people or organizations a ‘thumbs down’ award at its convention earlier this month. I could find only a passing mention of the ‘award’ on the group’s website but did find more details here.

One of those selected was DuJUAN McCOY, owner of WRTV and WISH-TV here in Indianapolis, who fired back.

I saw several articles of interest over the past week or two and thought you might like them.

There have been lots of stories about Scripps’s move to eliminate anchors for many newscasts. This story tonight from the Status newsletter was good, but it may be behind a paywall.

While Scripps moves forward without anchors in many situations, longtime news director and educator STACEY WOELFEL thinks that’s a mistake.

There are obviously a lot of changes in the business these days. Executive recruiter TY CARVER thinks his job gives him an advance look at those trends.

Two veteran Nexstar General Managers are retiring after long service with their stations.

DAVID COY is retiring after 23+ years as GM for WKBN-TV (CBS) in Youngstown, OH. He first joined the station in 1982!

THOMAS ANTISDEL is stepping away from WANE-TV in Ft. Wayne, OH after 35 years at the station, the last ten as GM.

And longtime Gray GM MATT PUMO is retiring after 41 years in the business and ten as GM for WDBJ-TV in Roanoke. He explained on social media.

KOSA/KTLE-TV, Odessa/Midland, TX…when JAKOB BRANDENBURG returns to this CBS/Telemundo operation from paternity leave, he will assume the news director’s role. Jakob’s worked here for eight years in a variety of positions, including sports director, morning anchor, and, most recently, afternoon anchor. Jakob succeeds CRAIG HUME who left in late June after less than a year as ND.

WOI-TV, Des Moines/Ames, IA…MATT KALISH is leaving this Tegna owned ABC affiliate to move to another Tegna station, WXIA-TV (NBC) in Atlanta where he will be the Assistant ND. Here’s the note to the WOI staff. The move reunites him with WXIA’s Director of Content, TODD SPESSARD. They worked together at Griffin Media in Oklahoma. Matt’s also worked in Wichita and Columbia, MO.

Suarez

Our Wednesday UPDATE brought you first news of the death of longtime broadcaster JOSE SUAREZ. New: This story from Variety with details on the helicopter crash in Kenya that killed Jose and six others, including four Americans. Jose’s been GM for THREE Telemundo stations in Florida. He’s been a GM and ND in several other markets as his Linkedin page explains.

Bill R.

BILL RASMUSSEN, a former sports director turned news director for WWLP-TV in Springfield, MA, died this week at the age of 93. But you likely know him for being the founder of ESPN. Variety’s story says the idea came to him while stuck in a traffic jam. ESPN launched in 1979 with 80 employees. He was forced out of the company just two years later by investors. Eventually ABC bought the company in 1984.

Comings

A celebration of life for RON COMINGS will be held in October in Las Vegas. Ron, a multi-time news director most recently at KLAS-TV in Las Vegas, lost his fight with cancer in late June, shortly before his 78th birthday. Ron’s wife, KERRI, sent me this link to a site that allows you to post a video celebrating Ron’s life. That celebration will be held Saturday, October 24th, from 5:30-8:30 at 387 Rushing Creek Ct, Las Vegas, 89014.

Greetings:

A helicopter crash in a remote area of Kenya has claimed the life of a longtime General Manager and News Director.

Suarez

JOSE SUAREZ was one of seven people and four Americans killed in the crash. Most recently, Jose has been the GM for three Telemundo stations in Tampa, Orlando, and Ft, Myers. He was just 55 years old.

She’s been the Director of News Coverage and Digital Content for Rincon since February, when she left her job as ND for KOKI-TV in Tulsa. Amy’s held a number of ND jobs as you’ll learn from her Linkedin profile. She replaces RANDY WARDELL who departed to become the ND for Nexstar’s WKRN-TV (ABC) in Nashville.

KATC/KADN/KLAF-TV, Lafayette, LA…a series of station ownership changes has resulted in Gray Media owning all three of these stations. JIM PARKER (who’d been GM and ND for KADN & KALF, which had been owned by Allen Media) will be Director of News for the triopoly. Jim sent me this note with more on the ownership history, and what he says will be an increase in live programming and that jobs will be maintained.

KCRA-TV, Sacramento, CA…DEREK SCHNELL‘s been promoted to VP/News for station owner Hearst. (He’s been a Regional ND.) Derek’s been ND for this NBC affiliate since December, 2018, when he was promoted from Assistant ND. He’s a Hearst lifer: in 20 years with Hearst, he’s worked in Oklahoma City and Kansas City. He’s also worked in Columbia, MO. His replacement will be announced soon: Hearst typically does a great job of promoting from within.

At WOFL, Rachel replaces the woman to whom she will now report, MELLISA MEDALIE, who was promoted to Senior VP/GM for the FOX stations in Florida.

It’s an inter-company move for Kellen, who’s been the Assistant ND for WLWT-TV (NBC) in Cincinnati for the past three years. He’s also worked for Hearst stations in Boston and Winston-Salem. In Louisville, Kellen replaces his new boss, ANDREA STAHLMAN who was promoted to GM earlier this summer after 14 years as ND.

KAKE-TV, Wichita, KS…WADE PARSONS will be the next news director for this Lockwood Broadcasting ABC affiliate. Here’s the news release from the station. For the last five years, Wade’s been the news director for Sinclair’s WCHS-TV (CBS/FOX) in Charleston, WV. He’s also worked in Las Vegas, Providence, Orlando, and Greenville, SC. At KAKE, he replaces DAVID WILLIAMS who left earlier this summer for family reasons after five years.

WCHS-TV, Charleston, WV…you learned above that WADE PARSONS is leaving to become the ND for KAKE-TV (ABC) in Wichita.

KCAU-TV, Sioux City, IA…ANDY BOTTGER has left this Nexstar owned ABC affiliate. He’s been the ND here since the summer of 2022, and has been at the station for 13+ years.

There was a TON of news this week about the industry and we’ll get to that in a moment. But here’s a story that caught my eye.

If you’ve worked at Raycom or Hearst, you may have worked with a programming executive who has a certain claim to fame.

MARY CLAIRE McDONNELL is on the FBI’s 10 Most Wanted list.

Here’s the story from Business Insider.

You almost certainly know by know that the FCC voted to repeal the congressionally approved 39% cap on broadcast ownership.

The President of the Multicultural Media, Telecom and Internet Council doesn’t think the FCC can do that.
